We derive a sharp bound on the location of non-positive eigenvalues of Schroedinger operators on the halfline with complex-valued potentials.
We show that the absolute values of non-positive eigenvalues of Schrödinger operators with complex potentials can be bounded in terms of L_p-norms of the potential. This extends an inequality of Abramov, Aslanyan, and Davies to higher dimensions and proves a conjecture by Laptev and Safronov. Our main ingredient are the uniform Sobolev inequalities of Kenig, Ruiz, and Sogge.
We resolve several longstanding problems concerning the stability and the absence of multi-particle binding for N\geq 2 polarons. Fröhlich's 1937 polaron model describes non-relativistic particles interacting with a scalar quantized field with coupling \sqrtα, and with each other by Coulomb repulsion of strength U. We prove the following: (i) While there is a known thermodynamic instability for U<2α, stability of matter does hold for U>2α, that is, the ground state energy per particle has a finite limit as N\to\infty. (ii) There is no binding of any kind if U exceeds a critical value that depends on αbut not on N. The same results are shown to hold for the Pekar-Tomasevich model.
The binding of polarons, or its absence, is an old and subtle topic. Here we prove two things rigorously. First, the transition from many-body collapse to the existence of a thermodynamic limit for N polarons occurs precisely at U=2α, where U is the electronic Coulomb repulsion and αis the polaron coupling constant. Second, if U is large enough, there is no multi-polaron binding of any kind. Considering the known fact that there is binding for some U>2α, these conclusions are not obvious and their proof has been an open problem for some time.
We introduce the concept of spherical (as distinguished from planar) reflection positivity and use it to obtain a new proof of the sharp constants in certain cases of the HLS and the logarithmic HLS inequality. Our proofs relies on an extension of a work by Li and Zhu which characterizes the minimizing functions of the type $(1+|x|^2)^{-p}$.
We give a new proof of certain cases of the sharp HLS inequality. Instead of symmetric decreasing rearrangement it uses the reflection positivity of inversions in spheres. In doing this we extend a characterization of the minimizing functions due to Li and Zhu.
The increasing interest in the Mueller density-matrix-functional theory has led us to a systematic mathematical investigation of its properties. This functional is similar to the Hartree-Fock functional, but with a modified exchange term in which the square of the density matrix γ(X, X') is replaced by the square of γ^{1/2}(X, X'). After an extensive introductory discussion of density-matrix-functional theory we show, among other things, that this functional is convex (unlike the HF functional) and that energy minimizing γ's have unique densities ρ(x), which is a physically desirable property often absent in HF theory. We show that minimizers exist if N \leq Z, and derive various properties of the minimal energy and the corresponding minimizers. We also give a precise statement about the equation for the orbitals of γ, which is more complex than for HF theory. We state some open mathematical questions about the theory together with conjectured solutions.
We show that, under very general definitions of a kinetic energy operator $T$, the Lieb-Thirring inequalities for sums of eigenvalues of $T-V$ can be derived from the Sobolev inequality appropriate to that choice of $T$.
We prove that for any domain in the Heisenberg group the (k+1)'th Neumann eigenvalue of the sub-Laplacian is strictly less than the k'th Dirichlet eigenvalue. As a byproduct we obtain similar inequalities for the Euclidean Laplacian with a homogeneous magnetic field.
We determine the sharp constant in the Hardy inequality for fractional Sobolev spaces on half-spaces. Our proof relies on a non-linear and non-local version of the ground state representation.
We establish uniqueness of ground states $u(x) \geq 0$ for the $L^2$-critical boson star equation $\sqrt{-Δ} u - (|x|^{-1} \ast |u|^2) u = -u$ in $\R^3$. The proof blends variational arguments with the harmonic extension to the halfspace $\R^4_+$. Apart from uniqueness, we also show radiality of ground states (up to translations) and the nondegeneracy of the linearization. Our results provide an indispensable basis for the blowup analysis of the time-dependent $L^2$-critical boson star equation. The uniqueness proof can be generalized to different fractional Laplacians $(-Δ)^s$ and space dimensions.
We consider the two-dimensional Pauli operator perturbed by a weakly coupled, attractive potential. We show that besides the eigenvalues arising from the Aharonov-Casher zero modes there are two or one (depending on whether the flux of the magnetic field is integer or not) additional eigenvalues for arbitrarily small coupling and we calculate their asymptotics in the weak coupling limit.
We present an overview over recent results concerning semi-classical spectral estimates for magnetic Schroedinger operators. We discuss how the constants in magnetic and non-magnetic eigenvalue bounds are related and we prove, in an abstract setting, that any non-magnetic Lieb-Thirring-type inequality implies a magnetic Lieb-Thirring-type inequality with possibly a larger constant.
We explicitly calculate the scattering matrix at energy zero for attractive, radial and homogeneous long-range potentials. This proves a conjecture by Derezinski and Skibsted.
We determine the sharp constant in the Hardy inequality for fractional Sobolev spaces. To do so, we develop a non-linear and non-local version of the ground state representation, which even yields a remainder term. From the sharp Hardy inequality we deduce the sharp constant in a Sobolev embedding which is optimal in the Lorentz scale. In the appendix, we characterize the cases of equality in the rearrangement inequality in fractional Sobolev spaces.
We give a short and unified proof of Hardy-Lieb-Thirring inequalities for moments of eigenvalues of fractional Schroedinger operators. The proof covers the optimal parameter range. It is based on a recent inequality by Solovej, Soerensen, and Spitzer. Moreover, we prove that any non-magnetic Lieb-Thirring inequality implies a magnetic Lieb-Thirring inequality (with possibly a larger constant).
We consider relativistic many-particle operators which - according to Brown and Ravenhall - describe the electronic states of heavy atoms. Their ground state energy is investigated in the limit of large nuclear charge and velocity of light. We show that the leading quasi-classical behavior given by the Thomas-Fermi theory is raised by a subleading correction, the Scott correction. Our result is valid for the maximal range of coupling constants, including the critical one. As a technical tool, a Sobolev-Gagliardo-Nirenberg-type inequality is established for the critical atomic Brown-Ravenhall operator. Moreover, we prove sharp upper and lower bound on the eigenvalues of the hydrogenic Brown-Ravenhall operator up to and including the critical coupling constant.
We prove several results showing that absolutely continuous spectrum for the Laplacian on radial trees is a rare event. In particular, we show that metric trees with unbounded edges have purely singular spectrum and that generically (in the sense of Baire) radial trees have purely singular continuous spectrum.
