Remarks about Hardy inequalities on metric trees

We find sharp conditions on the growth of a rooted regular metric tree such that the Neumann Laplacian on the tree satisfies a Hardy inequality. In particular, we consider homogeneous metric trees. Moreover, we show that a non-trivial Aharonov-Bohm magnetic field leads to a Hardy inequality on a loop graph.

Eigenvalue estimates for Schroedinger operators on metric trees

We consider Schroedinger operators on regular metric trees and prove Lieb-Thirring and Cwikel-Lieb-Rozenblum inequalities for their negative eigenvalues. The validity of these inequalities depends on the volume growth of the tree. We show that the bounds are valid in the endpoint case and reflect the correct order in the weak or strong coupling limit.

The critical temperature for the BCS equation at weak coupling

For the BCS equation with local two-body interaction $λV(x)$, we give a rigorous analysis of the asymptotic behavior of the critical temperature as $λ\to 0$. We derive necessary and sufficient conditions on $V(x)$ for the existence of a non-trivial solution for all values of $λ>0$.

Polya's conjecture in the presence of a constant magnetic field

We consider the Dirichlet Laplacian with a constant magnetic field in a two-dimensional domain of finite measure. We determine the sharp constants in semi-classical eigenvalue estimates and show, in particular, that Polya's conjecture is not true in the presence of a magnetic field.

Eigenvalue estimates for the Aharonov-Bohm operator in a domain

We prove semi-classical estimates on moments of eigenvalues of the Aharonov-Bohm operator in bounded two-dimensional domains. Moreover, we present a counterexample to the generalized diamagnetic inequality which was proposed by Erdos, Loss and Vougalter. Numerical studies complement these results.

The Ground State Energy of Heavy Atoms: Relativistic Lowering of the Leading Energy Correction

We describe atoms by a pseudo-relativistic model that has its origin in the work of Chandrasekhar. We prove that the leading energy correction for heavy atoms, the Scott correction, exists. It turns out to be lower than in the non-relativistic description of atoms. Our proof is valid up to and including the critical coupling constant. It is based on a renormalization of the energy whose zero level we adjust to be the ground-state energy of the corresponding non-relativistic problem. This allows us to roll the proof back -- by relatively simple technical means -- to results for the Schrödinger operator.

Lieb-Thirring inequalities on the half-line with critical exponent

We consider a Schrödinger operator on the half-line with a Dirichlet boundary condition at the origin and show that moments of its negative eigenvalues can be estimated by the part of the potential that is larger than the critical Hardy weight. The estimate is valid for the critical value of the moment parameter.

Hardy-Lieb-Thirring inequalities for fractional Schroedinger operators

We show that the Lieb-Thirring inequalities on moments of negative eigenvalues of Schroedinger-like operators remain true, with possibly different constants, when the critical Hardy-weight $C|x|^{-2}$ is subtracted from the Laplace operator. We do so by first establishing a Sobolev inequality for such operators. Similar results are true for fractional powers of the Laplacian and the Hardy-weight and, in particular, for relativistic Schroedinger operators. We also allow for the inclusion of magnetic vector potentials. As an application, we extend, for the first time, the proof of stability of relativistic matter with magnetic fields all the way up to the critical value of the nuclear charge $Zα=2/π$.

On the asymptotic number of edge states for magnetic Schrödinger operators

We consider a Schrödinger operator $(h\mathbf D -\mathbf A)^2$ with a positive magnetic field $B=\curl\mathbf A$ in a domain $Ω\subset\R^2$. The imposing of Neumann boundary conditions leads to spectrum below $h\inf B$. This is a boundary effect and it is related to the existence of edge states of the system. We show that the number of these eigenvalues, in the semi-classical limit $h\to 0$, is governed by a Weyl-type law and that it involves a symbol on $\partialΩ$. In the particular case of a constant magnetic field, the curvature plays a major role.

Absolute continuity of the spectrum for periodically modulated leaky wires in $\mathbb{R}^3$

We consider a model of leaky quantum wire in three dimensions. The Hamiltonian is a singular perturbation of the Laplacian supported by a line with the coupling which is bounded and periodically modulated along the line. We demonstrate that such a system has a purely absolutely continuous spectrum and its negative part has band structure with an at most finite number of gaps. This result is extended also to the situation when there is an infinite number of the lines supporting the perturbations arranged periodically in one direction.
