Discrete Schrödinger operators with decaying and oscillating potentials

We study a family of discrete one-dimensional Schrödinger operators with power-like decaying potentials with rapid oscillations. In particular, for the potential $V(n)=λn^{-α}\cos(πωn^β)$, with $1<β<2α$, we prove that the spectrum is purely absolutely continuous on the spectrum of the Laplacian.

Sharp inequalities for coherent states and their optimizers

We are interested in sharp functional inequalities for the coherent state transform related to the Wehrl conjecture and its generalizations. This conjecture was settled by Lieb in the case of the Heisenberg group and then by Lieb and Solovej for SU(2) and by Kulikov for SU(1,1) and the affine group. In this paper, we give alternative proofs and characterize, for the first time, the optimizers in the general case. We also extend the recent Faber--Krahn-type inequality for Heisenberg coherent states, due to Nicola and Tilli, to the SU(2) and SU(1,1) cases. Finally, we prove a family of reverse Hölder inequalities for polynomials, conjectured by Bodmann.

Blow-up of solutions of critical elliptic equations in three dimensions

We describe the asymptotic behavior of positive solutions $u_ε$ of the equation $-Δu + au = 3\,u^{5-ε}$ in $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^3$ with a homogeneous Dirichlet boundary condition. The function $a$ is assumed to be critical in the sense of Hebey and Vaugon and the functions $u_ε$ are assumed to be an optimizing sequence for the Sobolev inequality. Under a natural nondegeneracy assumption we derive the exact rate of the blow-up and the location of the concentration point, thereby proving a conjecture of Brézis and Peletier (1989). Similar results are also obtained for solutions of the equation $-Δu + (a+εV) u = 3\,u^5$ in $Ω$.

Asymptotics of singular values for quantum derivatives

We obtain Weyl type asymptotics for the quantised derivative $\dbar f$ of a function $f$ from the homgeneous Sobolev space $\dot{W}^1_d(\mathbb{R}^d)$ on $\mathbb{R}^d.$ The asymptotic coefficient $\|\nabla f\|_{L_d(\mathbb R^d)}$ is equivalent to the norm of $\dbar f$ in the principal ideal $\mathcal{L}_{d,\infty},$ thus, providing a non-asymptotic, uniform bound on the spectrum of $\dbar f.$ Our methods are based on the $C^{\ast}$-algebraic notion of the principal symbol mapping on $\mathbb{R}^d$, as developed recently by the last two authors and collaborators.

An inequality for the normal derivative of the Lane-Emden ground state

We consider Lane-Emden ground states with polytropic index $0\leq q-1\leq 1$, that is, minimizers of the Dirichlet integral among $L^q$-normalized functions. Our main result is a sharp lower bound on the $L^2$-norm of the normal derivative in terms of the energy, which implies a corresponding isoperimetric inequality. Our bound holds for arbitrary bounded open Lipschitz sets $Ω\subset\mathbb{R}^d$, without assuming convexity.

The work of Elliott Lieb

On the occasion of Elliott Lieb being awarded the Gauss Prize 2022, we give a non-technical overview over some of his seminal works in mathematical physics. We emphasize, in particular, his work on Coulomb many-body systems and functional inequalities.

Rearrangement methods in the work of Elliott Lieb

We review some topics in the theory of symmetric decreasing rearrangements with a particular focus on Lieb's fundamental contributions. Topics covered include the Brascamp--Lieb--Luttinger theorem, the sharp Young and Hardy--Littlewood--Sobolev inequalities, as well as the continuity of the rearrangement map on Sobolev spaces.

A characterization of $\dot W^{1,p}(\mathbb R^d)$

For $1<p<\infty$ we give a characterization of the Sobolev space $\dot W^{1,p}(\mathbb R^d)$ in terms of the oscillations of a function on balls of varying centers and radii. Our work is motivated both by the study of trace ideal properties of commutators with singular integral operators and by work of Nguyen and by Brezis, Van Schaftingen and Yung on derivative-free characterizations of Sobolev spaces.

Degenerate stability of some Sobolev inequalities

We show that on $\mathbb S^1(1/\sqrt{d-2})\times\mathbb S^{d-1}(1)$ the conformally invariant Sobolev inequality holds with a remainder term that is the fourth power of the distance to the optimizers. The fourth power is best possible. This is in contrast to the more usual vanishing to second order and is motivated by work of Engelstein, Neumayer and Spolaor. A similar phenomenon arises for subcritical Sobolev inequalities on $\mathbb S^d$. Our proof proceeds by an iterated Bianchi-Egnell strategy.

On the spectrum of the Kronig-Penney model in a constant electric field

We are interested in the nature of the spectrum of the one-dimensional Schrödinger operator $$ - \frac{d^2}{dx^2}-Fx + \sum_{n \in \mathbb{Z}}g_n δ(x-n) \qquad\text{in } L^2(\mathbb{R}) $$ with $F>0$ and two different choices of the coupling constants $\{g_n\}_{n\in \mathbb{Z}}$. In the first model $g_n \equiv λ$ and we prove that if $F\in π^2 \mathbb{Q}$ then the spectrum is $\mathbb{R}$ and is furthermore absolutely continuous away from an explicit discrete set of points. In the second model the $g_n$ are independent random variables with mean zero and variance $λ^2$. Under certain assumptions on the distribution of these random variables we prove that almost surely the spectrum is $\mathbb{R}$ and it is dense pure point if $F < λ^2/2$ and purely singular continuous if $F> λ^2/2$.

The Scott conjecture for large Coulomb systems: a review

We review some older and more recent results concerning the energy and particle distribution in ground states of heavy Coulomb systems. The reviewed results are asymptotic in nature: they describe properties of many-particle systems in the limit of a large number of particles. Particular emphasis is put on models that take relativistic kinematics into account. While non-relativistic models are typically rather well understood, this is generally not the case for relativistic ones and leads to a variety of open questions.

An improved one-dimensional Hardy inequality

We prove a one-dimensional Hardy inequality on the halfline with sharp constant, which improves the classical form of this inequality. As a consequence of this new inequality we can rederive known doubly weighted Hardy inequalities. Our motivation comes from the theory of Schrödinger operators and we explain the use of Hardy inequalities in that context.

Existence of optimizers in a Sobolev inequality for vector fields

We consider the minimization problem corresponding to a Sobolev inequality for vector fields and show that minimizing sequences are relatively compact up to the symmetries of the problem. In particular, there is a minimizer. An ingredient in our proof is a version of the Rellich--Kondrachov compactness theorem for sequences satisfying a nonlinear constraint.

Weyl's law under minimal assumptions

We show that Weyl's law for the number and the Riesz means of negative eigenvalues of Schrödinger operators remains valid under minimal assumptions on the potential, the vector potential and the underlying domain.

Which magnetic fields support a zero mode?

This paper presents some results concerning the size of magnetic fields that support zero modes for the three dimensional Dirac equation and related problems for spinor equations. It is a well known fact that for the Schrödinger in three dimensions to have a negative energy bound state, the 3/2- norm of the potential has to be greater than the Sobolev constant. We prove an analogous result for the existence of zero modes, namely that the 3/2 - norm of the magnetic field has to greater than twice the Sobolev constant. The novel point here is that the spinorial nature of the wave function is crucial. It leads to an improved diamagnetic inequality from which the bound is derived. While the results are probably not sharp, other equations are analyzed where the results are indeed optimal.

A sharp criterion for zero modes of the Dirac equation

It is shown that $\Vert A \Vert_{L^d}^2 \ge \frac{d}{d-2}\, S_d$ is a necessary condition for the existence of a nontrivial solution of the Dirac equation $γ\cdot (-i\nabla -A)ψ= 0$ in $d$ dimensions. Here, $S_d$ is the sharp Sobolev constant. If $d$ is odd and $\Vert A \Vert_{L^d}^2= \frac{d}{d-2}\, S_d$, then there exist vector potentials that allow for zero modes. A complete classification of these vector potentials and their corresponding zero modes is given.

Reverse conformally invariant Sobolev inequalities on the sphere

We consider the optimization problem corresponding to the sharp constant in a conformally invariant Sobolev inequality on the $n$-sphere involving an operator of order $2s> n$. In this case the Sobolev exponent is negative. Our results extend existing ones to noninteger values of $s$ and settle the question of validity of a corresponding inequality in all dimensions $n\geq 2$.
