Lieb-Thirring inequalities and other functional inequalities for orthonormal systems

We review recent results on functional inequalities for systems of orthonormal functions. The key finding is that for various operators the orthonormality leads to a gain over a simple application of the triangle inequality. The operators under consideration are either related to Sobolev type inequalities or to Fourier restriction type inequalities.

Minimizers for a one-dimensional interaction energy

We solve explicitly a certain minimization problem for probability measures in one dimension involving an interaction energy that arises in the modelling of aggregation phenomena. We show that in a certain regime minimizers are absolutely continuous with an unbounded density, thereby settling a question that was left open in previous works.

Some minimization problems for mean field models with competing forces

We review recent results on three families of minimization problems, defined on subsets of nonnegative functions with fixed integral. The competition between attractive and repulsive forces leads to transitions between parameter regimes, where minimizers exist and where they do not. The problems considered are generalized liquid drop models, swarming models and generalized Keller-Segel models.

Logarithmic estimates for mean-field models in dimension two and the Schrödinger-Poisson system

In dimension two, we investigate a free energy and the ground state energy of the Schrödinger-Poisson system coupled with a logarithmic nonlinearity in terms of underlying functional inequalities which take into account the scaling invariances of the problem. Such a system can be considered as a nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a cubic but nonlocal Poisson nonlinearity, and a local logarithmic nonlinearity. Both cases of repulsive and attractive forces are considered. We also assume that there is an external potential with minimal growth at infinity, which turns out to have a logarithmic growth. Our estimates rely on new logarithmic interpolation inequalities which combine logarithmic Hardy-Littlewood-Sobolev and logarithmic Sobolev inequalities. The two-dimensional model appears as a limit case of more classical problems in higher dimensions.

Existence and nonexistence in the liquid drop model

We revisit the liquid drop model with a general Riesz potential. Our new result is the existence of minimizers for the conjectured optimal range of parameters. We also prove a conditional uniqueness of minimizers and a nonexistence result for heavy nuclei.

The periodic Lieb-Thirring inequality

We discuss the Lieb-Thirring inequality for periodic systems, which has the same optimal constant as the original inequality for finite systems. This allows us to formulate a new conjecture about the value of its best constant. To demonstrate the importance of periodic states, we prove that the 1D Lieb-Thirring inequality at the special exponent $γ=3/2$ admits a one-parameter family of periodic optimizers, interpolating between the one-bound state and the uniform potential. Finally, we provide numerical simulations in 2D which support our conjecture that optimizers could be periodic.

Semiclassical asymptotics for a class of singular Schrödinger operators

Let $Ω\subset \mathbb{R}^d$ be bounded with $C^1$ boundary. In this paper we consider Schrödinger operators $-Δ+ W$ on $Ω$ with $W(x)\approx\mathrm{dist}(x, \partialΩ)^{-2}$ as $\mathrm{dist}(x, \partialΩ)\to 0$. Under weak assumptions on $W$ we derive a two-term asymptotic formula for the sum of the eigenvalues of such operators.

Relativistic Strong Scott Conjecture: A Short Proof

We consider heavy neutral atoms of atomic number $Z$ modeled with kinetic energy $(c^2p^2+c^4)^{1/2}-c^2$ used already by Chandrasekhar. We study the behavior of the one-particle ground state density on the length scale $Z^{-1}$ in the limit $Z,c\to\infty$ keeping $Z/c$ fixed. We give a short proof of a recent result by the authors and Barry Simon showing the convergence of the density to the relativistic hydrogenic density on this scale.

The nonlinear Schrödinger equation for orthonormal functions: II. Application to Lieb-Thirring inequalities

In this paper we disprove part of a conjecture of Lieb and Thirring concerning the best constant in their eponymous inequality. We prove that the best Lieb-Thirring constant when the eigenvalues of a Schrödinger operator $-Δ+V(x)$ are raised to the power $κ$ is never given by the one-bound state case when $κ>\max(0,2-d/2)$ in space dimension $d\geq1$. When in addition $κ\geq1$ we prove that this best constant is never attained for a potential having finitely many eigenvalues. The method to obtain the first result is to carefully compute the exponentially small interaction between two Gagliardo-Nirenberg optimisers placed far away. For the second result, we study the dual version of the Lieb-Thirring inequality, in the same spirit as in Part I of this work (D. Gontier, M. Lewin & F.Q. Nazar, arXiv:2002.04963). In a different but related direction, we also show that the cubic nonlinear Schrödinger equation admits no orthonormal ground state in 1D, for more than one function.

Sharp Weyl laws with singular potentials

We consider the Laplace--Beltrami operator on a three-dimensional Riemannian manifold perturbed by a potential from the Kato class and study whether various forms of Weyl's law remain valid under this perturbation. We show that a pointwise Weyl law holds, modified by an additional term, for any Kato class potential with the standard sharp remainder term. The additional term is always of lower order than the leading term, but it may or may not be of lower order than the sharp remainder term. In particular, we provide examples of singular potentials for which this additional term violates the sharp pointwise Weyl law of the standard Laplace-Beltrami operator. For the proof we extend the method of Avakumović to the case of Schrödinger operators with singular potentials.

Quantum corrections to the Pekar asymptotics of a strongly coupled polaron

We consider the Fröhlich polaron model in the strong coupling limit. It is well known that to leading order the ground state energy is given by the (classical) Pekar energy. In this work, we establish the subleading correction, describing quantum fluctuation about the classical limit. Our proof applies to a model of a confined polaron, where both the electron and the polarization field are restricted to a set of finite volume, with linear size determined by the natural length scale of the Pekar problem.

Classification of solutions of an equation related to a conformal log Sobolev inequality

We classify all finite energy solutions of an equation which arises as the Euler--Lagrange equation of a conformally invariant logarithmic Sobolev inequality on the sphere due to Beckner. Our proof uses an extension of the method of moving spheres from $\mathbb R^n$ to $\mathbb S^n$ and a classification result of Li and Zhu. Along the way we prove a small volume maximum principle and a strong maximum principle for the underlying operator which is closely related to the logarithmic Laplacian.

On the error in the two-term Weyl formula for the Dirichlet Laplacian

We study the optimality of the remainder term in the two-term Weyl law for the Dirichlet Laplacian within the class of Lipschitz regular subsets of $\mathbb{R}^d$. In particular, for the short-time asymptotics of the trace of the heat kernel we prove that the error term cannot be made quantitatively better than little-$o$ of the second term.

Sharp decay estimates for critical Dirac equations

We prove sharp pointwise decay estimates for critical Dirac equations on $\mathbb{R}^n$ with $n\geq 2$. They appear for instance in the study of critical Dirac equations on compact spin manifolds, describing blow-up profiles, and as effective equations in honeycomb structures. For the latter case, we find excited states with an explicit asymptotic behavior. Moreover, we provide some classification results both for ground states and for excited states.

Proof of the Strong Scott Conjecture for Chandrasekhar Atoms

We consider a large neutral atom of atomic number $Z$, taking relativistic effects into account by assuming the dispersion relation $\sqrt{c^2p^2+c^4}$. We study the behavior of the one-particle ground state density on the length scale $Z^{-1}$ in the limit $Z,c\to\infty$ keeping $Z/c$ fixed and find that the spherically averaged density as well as all individual angular momentum densities separately converge to the relativistic hydrogenic ones. This proves the generalization of the strong Scott conjecture for relativistic atoms and shows, in particular, that relativistic effects occur close to the nucleus. Along the way we prove upper bounds on the relativistic hydrogenic density.
