On the existence of embeddings into modules of finite homological dimensions

Let R be a commutative Noetherian local ring. We show that R is Gorenstein if and only if every finitely generated R-module can be embedded in a finitely generated R-module of finite projective dimension. This extends a result of Auslander and Bridger to rings of higher Krull dimension, and it also improves a result due to Foxby where the ring is assumed to be Cohen-Macaulay.

Nonlinearly Realized Extended Supergravity

We provide nonlinear realization of supergravity with an arbitrary number of supersymmetries by means of coset construction. The number of gravitino degrees of freedom counts the number of supersymmetries, which will be possibly probed in future experiments. We also consider goldstino embedding in the construction to discuss the relation to nonlinear realization with rigid supersymmetries.

Contravariantly finite resolving subcategories over commutative rings

Contravariantly finite resolving subcategories of the category of finitely generated modules have been playing an important role in the representation theory of algebras. In this paper we study contravariantly finite resolving subcategories over commutative rings. The main purpose of this paper is to classify contravariantly finite resolving subcategories over a henselian Gorenstein local ring; in fact there exist only three ones. Our method to obtain this classification also recovers as a by-product the theorem of Christensen, Piepmeyer, Striuli and Takahashi concerning the relationship between the contravariant finiteness of the full subcategory of totally reflexive modules and the Gorenstein property of the base ring.

Fine Tuning in General Gauge Mediation

We study the fine-tuning problem in the context of general gauge mediation. Numerical analyses toward for relaxing fine-tuning are presented. We analyse the problem in typical three cases of the messenger scale, that is, GUT ($2\times10^{16}$ GeV), intermediate ($10^{10}$ GeV), and relatively low energy ($10^6$ GeV) scales. In each messenger scale, the parameter space reducing the degree of tuning as around 10% is found. Certain ratios among gluino mass, wino mass and soft scalar masses are favorable. It is shown that the favorable region becomes narrow as the messenger scale becomes lower, and tachyonic initial conditions of stop masses at the messenger scale are favored to relax the fine-tuning problem for the relatively low energy messenger scale. Our spectra would also be important from the viewpoint of the $μ-B$ problem.

Top Yukawa Deviation in Extra Dimension

We suggest a simple one-Higgs-doublet model living in the bulk of five-dimensional spacetime compactified on $S^1/Z_2$, in which the top Yukawa coupling can be smaller than the naive standard-model expectation, i.e. the top quark mass divided by the Higgs vacuum expectation value. If we find only single Higgs particle at the LHC and also observe the top Yukawa deviation, our scenario becomes a realistic candidate beyond the standard model. The Yukawa deviation comes from the fact that the wave function profile of the free physical Higgs field can become different from that of the vacuum expectation value, due to the presence of the brane-localized Higgs potentials. In the Brane-Localized Fermion scenario, we find sizable top Yukawa deviation, which could be checked at the LHC experiment, with a dominant Higgs production channel being the $WW$ fusion. We also study the Bulk Fermion scenario with brane-localized Higgs potential, which resembles the Universal Extra Dimension model with a stable dark matter candidate. We show that both scenarios are consistent with the current electroweak precision measurements.

Tri-Bimaximal Mixing from Twisted Friedberg-Lee Symmetry

We investigate the Friedberg-Lee (FL) symmetry and its promotion to include the $μ- τ$ symmetry, and call that the twisted FL symmetry.Based on the twisted FL symmetry, two possible schemes are presented toward the realistic neutrino mass spectrum and the tri-bimaximal mixing. In the first scheme, we suggest the semi-uniform translation of the FL symmetry. The second one is based on the $S_3$ permutation family symmetry. The breaking terms, which are twisted FL symmetric, are introduced. Some viable models in each scheme are also presented.

On localizing subcategories of derived categories

Let A be a commutative noetherian ring. In this paper, we interpret localizing subcategories of the derived category of A by using subsets of Spec A and subcategories of the category of A-modules. We unify theorems of Gabriel, Neeman and Krause.

A generalization of a theorem of Foxby

In this paper, it is proved that a commutative noetherian local ring admitting a finitely generated module of finite projective and injective dimensions with respect to a semidualizing module is Gorenstein. This result recovers a celebrated theorem of Foxby.

Modules in resolving subcategories which are free on the punctured spectrum

Let R be a commutative noetherian local ring, and let X be a resolving subcategory of the category of finitely generated R-modules. In this paper, we study modules in X by relating them to modules in X which are free on the punctured spectrum of R. We do this by investigating nonfree loci and establishing an analogue of the notion of a level in a triangulated category which has been introduced by Avramov, Buchweitz, Iyengar and Miller. As an application, we prove a result on the dimension of the nonfree locus of a resolving subcategory having only countably many nonisomorphic indecomposable modules in it, which is a generalization of a theorem of Huneke and Leuschke.

Tri-bimaximal Mixing from Cascades

We study fermion mass matrices of the cascade form which are compatible with the tri-bimaximal lepton mixing and generation mass hierarchy. The flat-cascade lepton matrices imply a parameter-independent relation among the mixing angles and mass eigenvalues. The relation has several indications that the atmospheric neutrino mixing angle is close to maximal and the other two angles have a correlation independently of neutrino mass eigenvalues. We also discuss phenomenological aspects of the cascade matrices; flavor-violating rare decays of charged leptons, thermal leptogenesis, and leptonic CP violation. Possible dynamical origins of the cascades are illustrated based on flavor symmetry and in higher-dimensional theory.

Homological aspects of semidualizing modules

We investigate the notion of the C-projective dimension of a module, where C is a semidualizing module. When C=R, this recovers the standard projective dimension. We show that three natural definitions of finite C-projective dimension agree, and investigate the relationship between relative cohomology modules and absolute cohomology modules in this setting. Finally, we prove several results that demonstrate the deep connections between modules of finite projective dimension and modules of finite C-projective dimension. In parallel, we develop the dual theory for injective dimension and C-injective dimension.

Local cohomology based on a nonclosed support defined by a pair of ideals

We introduce an idea for generalization of a local cohomology module, which we call a local cohomology module with respect to a pair of ideals (I,J), and study their various properties. Some vanishing and nonvanishing theorems are given for this generalized version of local cohomology. We also discuss its connection with the ordinary local cohomology.

Classifying subcategories of modules over a commutative noetherian ring

Let R be a quotient ring of a commutative coherent regular ring by a finitely generated ideal. Hovey gave a bijection between the set of coherent subcategories of the category of finitely presented R-modules and the set of thick subcategories of the derived category of perfect R-complexes. Using this isomorphism, he proved that every coherent subcategory of finitely presented R-modules is a Serre subcategory. In this paper, it is proved that this holds whenever R is a commutative noetherian ring. This paper also yields a module version of the bijection between the set of localizing subcategories of the derived category of R-modules and the set of subsets of Spec R which was given by Neeman.

On vanishing of certain Ext modules

Let R be a Noetherian local ring with the maximal ideal m and dim R=1. In this paper, we shall prove that the module Ext^1_R(R/Q,R) does not vanish for every parameter ideal Q in R, if the embedding dimension v(R) of R is at most 4 and the ideal m^2 kills the 0th local cohomology module H_m^0(R). The assertion is no longer true unless v(R) \leq 4. Counterexamples are given. We shall also discuss the relation between our counterexamples and a problem on modules of finite G-dimension.

Soft supersymmetry breaking terms from D4 x Z2 lepton flavor symmetry

We study the supersymmetric model with $D_4 \times Z_2$ lepton flavor symmetry. We evaluate soft supersymmetry breaking terms, i.e. soft slepton masses and A-terms, which are predicted in the $D_4$ flavor model. We consider constraints due to experiments of flavor changing neutral current processes.

Finite Gorenstein representation type implies simple singularity

Let R be a commutative noetherian local ring and consider the set of isomorphism classes of indecomposable totally reflexive R-modules. We prove that if this set is finite, then either it has exactly one element, represented by the rank 1 free module, or R is Gorenstein and an isolated singularity (if R is complete, then it is even a simple hypersurface singularity). The crux of our proof is to argue that if the residue field has a totally reflexive cover, then R is Gorenstein or every totally reflexive R-module is free.

D4 Flavor Symmetry for Neutrino Masses and Mixing

We present the $D_4\times Z_2$ flavor symmetry, which is different from the previous work by Grimus and Lavoura. Our model reduces to the standard model in the low energy and there is no FCNC at the tree level. Putting the experimental data, parameters are fixed, and then the implication of our model is discussed. The condition to realize the tri-bimaximal mixing is presented. The possibility for stringy realization of our model is also discussed.

D-modules over rings with finite F-representation type

Smith and Van den Bergh introduced the notion of finite F-representation type as a characteristic $p$ analogue of the notion of finite representation type. In this paper, we prove two finiteness properties of rings with finite F-representation type. The first property states that if $R=\bigoplus_{n \ge 0}R_n$ is a Noetherian graded ring with finite (graded) F-representation type, then for every non-zerodivisor $x \in R$, $R_x$ is generated by $1/x$ as a $D_{R}$-module. The second one states that if $R$ is a Gorenstein ring with finite F-representation type, then $H_I^n(R)$ has only finitely many associated primes for any ideal $I$ of $R$ and any integer $n$. We also include a result on the discreteness of F-jumping exponents of ideals of rings with finite (graded) F-representation type as an appendix.
