Cohomological dimensions of specialization-closed subsets and subcategories of modules

Let R be a commutative noetherian ring. In this paper, we study specialization-closed subsets of Spec R. More precisely, we first characterize the specialization-closed subsets in terms of various closure properties of subcategories of modules. Then, for each nonnegative integer n we introduce the notion of n-wide subcategories of R-modules to consider the question asking when a given specialization-closed subset has cohomological dimension at most n.

Filtrations in module categories, derived categories and prime spectra

Let R be a commutative noetherian ring. The notion of n-wide subcategories of Mod R is introduced and studied in Matsui-Nam-Takahashi-Tri-Yen in relation to the cohomological dimension of a specialization-closed subset of Spec R. In this paper, we introduce the notions of n-coherent subsets of Spec R and n-uniform subcategories of D(Mod R), and explore their interactions with n-wide subcategories of Mod R. We obtain a commutative diagram which yields filtrations of subcategories of Mod R, D(Mod R) and subsets of Spec R and complements classification theorems of subcategories due to Gabriel, Krause, Neeman, Takahashi and Angeleri Hugel-Marks-Stovicek-Takahashi-Vitoria.

Higher-Order Topological Crystalline Insulating Phase and Quantized Hinge Charge in Topological Electride Apatite

In higher-order topological insulators, bulk and surface electronic states are gapped, while there appear gapless hinge states protected by spatial symmetry. Here we show by ab initio calculations that the La apatite electride is a higher-order topological crystalline insulator. It is a one-dimensional electride, in which the one-dimensional interstitial hollows along the $c$ axis support anionic electrons, and the electronic states in these one-dimensional channels are well approximated by the one-dimensional Su-Schrieffer-Heeger model. When the crystal is cleaved into a hexagonal prism, the 120$^\circ$ hinges support gapless hinge states, with their filling quantized to be 2/3. This quantization of the filling comes from a topological origin. We find that the quantized value of the filling depends on the fundamental blocks that constitute the crystal. The apatite consists of the triangular blocks, which is crucial for giving nontrivial fractional charge at the hinge.

Twofold quadruple Weyl nodes in chiral cubic crystals

Conventional Weyl nodes are twofold band crossings that carry a unit monopole charge, which can exist in condensed matter systems with the protection of translation symmetry. Unconventional Weyl nodes are twofold/multifold band crossings carrying a quantized monopole charge larger than one, and their existence needs the protection of additional crystalline symmetries. Studies on unconventional Weyl nodes are already very comprehensive, such as twofold Weyl nodes with Chern number of C=2/C=3 and fourfold/sixfoldWeyl nodes with C=4. Yet in this paper, we propose a newfound twofold unconventional Weyl node with C=4, which can exist in any chiral cubic systems with integer spin. Such kind of twofold quadruple Weyl node has a cubic band dispersion along [111] direction and will evolve into a fourfold quadruple Weyl node after considering spin-orbit coupling. In this paper, we exhaust all the possible chiral cubic space groups and corresponding k-points, which can have twofold quadruple Weyl nodes. We also propose a series of LaIrSi-type materials that both have twofold quadruple Weyl nodes in electronic systems and the phonon spectra.

Appearance of hinge states in second-order topological insulators via the cutting procedure

In recent years, second-order topological insulators have been proposed as a new class of topological insulators. Second-order topological insulators are materials with gapped bulk and surfaces, but with topologically protected gapless states at the intersection of two surfaces. These gapless states are called hinge states. In this paper, we give a general proof that any insulators with inversion symmetry and gapped surface in class A always have hinge states when the $\mathbb{Z}_{4}$ topological index $μ_{1}$ is $μ_{1}=2$. We consider a three-dimensional insulator whose boundary conditions along two directions change by changing the hopping amplitudes across the boundaries. We study behaviors of gapless states through continuously changing boundary conditions along the two directions, and reveal that the behaviors of gapless states result from the $\mathbb{Z}_{4}$ strong topological index. From this discussion, we show that gapless states inevitably appear at the hinge of a three-dimensional insulator with gapped surfaces when the strong topological index is $\mathbb{Z}_{4}=2$ and the weak topological indices are $ν_{1}=ν_{2}=ν_{3}=0$.

Pressure-Induced Restoration of the Reversed Crystal-Field Splitting in $α$-Sr$_2$CrO$_4$

Motivated by an experimental finding that the successive phase transitions in $α$-Sr$_2$CrO$_4$ observed at ambient pressure ceases to exist under high pressures, we carry out the density-functional-theory-based electronic structure calculations and demonstrate that the reversal of the crystal-field splitting reported previously is restored under high pressures, so that the orbital degrees of freedom disappears, resulting in the single phase transition that divides the system into high-temperature Mott insulating and low-temperature antiferromagnetic insulating phases.

Maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules that are not locally free on the punctured spectrum

We say that a Cohen-Macaulay local ring has finite $\operatorname{\mathsf{CM}}_+$-representation type if there exist only finitely many isomorphism classes of indecomposable maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules that are not locally free on the punctured spectrum. In this paper, we consider finite $\operatorname{\mathsf{CM}}_+$-representation type from various points of view, relating it with several conjectures on finite/countable Cohen-Macaulay representation type. We prove in dimension one that the Gorenstein local rings of finite $\operatorname{\mathsf{CM}}_+$-representation type are exactly the local hypersurfaces of countable $\mathsf{CM}$-representation type, that is, the hypersurfaces of type $(\mathrm{A}_\infty)$ and $(\mathrm{D}_\infty)$. We also discuss the closedness and dimension of the singular locus of a Cohen-Macaulay local ring of finite $\operatorname{\mathsf{CM}}_+$-representation type.

Bulk-edge and bulk-hinge correspondence in inversion-symmetric insulators

We show that a slab of a three-dimensional inversion-symmetric higher-order topological insulator (HOTI) in class A is a 2D Chern insulator, and that in class AII is a 2D $Z_2$ topological insulator. We prove it by considering a process of cutting the three-dimensional inversion-symmetric HOTI along a plane, and study the spectral flow in the cutting process. We show that the $Z_4$ indicators, which characterize three-dimensional inversion-symmetric HOTIs in classes A and AII, are directly related to the $Z_2$ indicators for the corresponding two-dimensional slabs with inversion symmetry, i.e. the Chern number parity and the $Z_2$ topological invariant, for classes A and AII respectively. The existence of the gapless hinge states is understood from the conventional bulk-edge correspondence between the slab system and its edge states. Moreover, we also show that the spectral-flow analysis leads to another proof of the bulk-edge correspondence in one- and two-dimensional inversion-symmetric insulators.

Data Augmentation using Random Image Cropping and Patching for Deep CNNs

Deep convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have achieved remarkable results in image processing tasks. However, their high expression ability risks overfitting. Consequently, data augmentation techniques have been proposed to prevent overfitting while enriching datasets. Recent CNN architectures with more parameters are rendering traditional data augmentation techniques insufficient. In this study, we propose a new data augmentation technique called random image cropping and patching (RICAP) which randomly crops four images and patches them to create a new training image. Moreover, RICAP mixes the class labels of the four images, resulting in an advantage similar to label smoothing. We evaluated RICAP with current state-of-the-art CNNs (e.g., the shake-shake regularization model) by comparison with competitive data augmentation techniques such as cutout and mixup. RICAP achieves a new state-of-the-art test error of $2.19\%$ on CIFAR-10. We also confirmed that deep CNNs with RICAP achieve better results on classification tasks using CIFAR-100 and ImageNet and an image-caption retrieval task using Microsoft COCO.

Generation in singularity categories of hypersurfaces of countable representation type

The Orlov spectrum and Rouquier dimension are invariants of a triangulated category to measure how big the category is, and they have been studied actively. In this paper, we investigate the singularity category $\mathsf{D_{sg}}(R)$ of a hypersurface $R$ of countable representation type. For a thick subcategory $\mathcal{T}$ of $\mathsf{D_{sg}}(R)$ and a full subcategory $\mathcal{X}$ of $\mathcal{T}$, we calculate the Rouquier dimension of $\mathcal{T}$ with respect to $\mathcal{X}$. Furthermore, we prove that the level in $\mathsf{D_{sg}}(R)$ of the residue field of $R$ with respect to each nonzero object is at most one.

On the radius of the category of extensions of matrix factorizations

Let $S$ be a commutative noetherian ring. The extensions of matrix factorizations of non-zerodivisors $x_1,\dots,x_n$ of $S$ form a full subcategory of finitely generated modules over the quotient ring $S/(x_1\cdots x_n)$. In this paper, we investigate the radius (in the sense of Dao and Takahashi) of this full subcategory. As an application, we obtain an upper bound of the dimension (in the sense of Rouquier) of the singularity category of a local hypersurface of dimension one, which refines a recent result of Kawasaki, Nakamura and Shimada.

Burch ideals and Burch rings

We introduce the notion of Burch ideals and Burch rings. They are easy to define, and can be viewed as generalization of many well-known concepts, for example integrally closed ideals of finite colength and Cohen--Macaulay rings of minimal multiplicity. We give several characterizations of these objects. We show that they satisfy many interesting and desirable properties: ideal-theoretic, homological, categorical. We relate them to other classes of ideals and rings in the literature.

A topology on the set of isomorphism classes of maximal Cohen--Macaulay modules

In this paper, we introduce a topology on the set of isomorphism classes of finitely generated modules over an associative algebra. Then we focus on the relative topology on the set of isomorphism classes of maximal Cohen--Macaulay modules over a Cohen--Macaulay local ring. We discuss the irreducible components over certain hypersurfaces.

A Novel Weight-Shared Multi-Stage CNN for Scale Robustness

Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have demonstrated remarkable results in image classification for benchmark tasks and practical applications. The CNNs with deeper architectures have achieved even higher performance recently thanks to their robustness to the parallel shift of objects in images as well as their numerous parameters and the resulting high expression ability. However, CNNs have a limited robustness to other geometric transformations such as scaling and rotation. This limits the performance improvement of the deep CNNs, but there is no established solution. This study focuses on scale transformation and proposes a network architecture called the weight-shared multi-stage network (WSMS-Net), which consists of multiple stages of CNNs. The proposed WSMS-Net is easily combined with existing deep CNNs such as ResNet and DenseNet and enables them to acquire robustness to object scaling. Experimental results on the CIFAR-10, CIFAR-100, and ImageNet datasets demonstrate that existing deep CNNs combined with the proposed WSMS-Net achieve higher accuracies for image classification tasks with only a minor increase in the number of parameters and computation time.

Powers of the maximal ideal and vanishing of (co)homology

We prove that each positive power of the maximal ideal of a commutative Noetherian local ring is Tor-rigid, and strongly-rigid. This gives new characterizations of regularity and, in particular, shows that such ideals satisfy the torsion condition of a long-standing conjecture of Huneke and Wiegand.

Flat ring epimorphisms and universal localisations of commutative rings

We study different types of localisations of a commutative noetherian ring. More precisely, we provide criteria to decide: (a) if a given flat ring epimorphism is a universal localisation in the sense of Cohn and Schofield; and (b) when such universal localisations are classical rings of fractions. In order to find such criteria, we use the theory of support and we analyse the specialisation closed subset associated to a flat ring epimorphism. In case the underlying ring is locally factorial or of Krull dimension one, we show that all flat ring epimorphisms are universal localisations. Moreover, it turns out that an answer to the question of when universal localisations are classical depends on the structure of the Picard group. We furthermore discuss the case of normal rings, for which the divisor class group plays an essential role to decide if a given flat ring epimorphism is a universal localisation. Finally, we explore several (counter)examples which highlight the necessity of our assumptions.

Totally Reflexive Modules and Poincaré Series

We study Cohen-Macaulay non-Gorenstein local rings $(R,\mathfrak{m},k)$ admitting certain totally reflexive modules. More precisely, we give a description of the Poincaré series of $k$ by using the Poincaré series of a non-zero totally reflexive module with minimal multiplicity. Our results generalize a result of Yoshino to higher-dimensional Cohen-Macaulay local rings. Moreover, from a quasi-Gorenstein ideal satisfying some conditions, we construct a family of non-isomorphic indecomposable totally reflexive modules having an arbitrarily large minimal number of generators.
