On the ideal case of a conjecture of Huneke and Wiegand

A conjecture of Huneke and Wiegand claims that, over one-dimensional commutative Noetherian local domains, the tensor product of a finitely generated, non-free, torsion-free module with its algebraic dual always has torsion. Building on a beautiful result of Corso, Huneke, Katz and Vasconcelos, we prove that the conjecture is affirmative for a large class of ideals over arbitrary one-dimensional local domains. Furthermore we study a higher dimensional analog of the conjecture for integrally closed ideals over Noetherian rings that are not necessarily local. We also consider a related question on the conjecture and give an affirmative answer for first syzygies of maximal Cohen-Macaulay modules.

Openness of the regular locus and generators for module categories

This work clarifies the relationship between the openness of the regular locus of a commutative Noetherian ring R and the existence of generators for the category of finitely generated R-modules, the corresponding bounded derived category, and for the singularity category of R.

Local rings with quasi-decomposable maximal ideal

Let $(R,\frak m)$ be a commutative noetherian local ring. In this paper, we prove that if $\frak m$ is decomposable, then for any finitely generated $R$-module $M$ of infinite projective dimension $\frak m$ is a direct summand of (a direct sum of) syzygies of $M$. Applying this result to the case where $\frak m$ is quasi-decomposable, we obtain several classfications of subcategories, including a complete classification of the thick subcategories of the singularity category of $R$.

The Jacobian ideal of a commutative ring and annihilators of cohomology

It is proved that for a ring $R$ that is either an affine algebra over a field, or an equicharacteristic complete local ring, some power of the Jacobian ideal of $R$ annihilates $\mathrm{Ext}^{d+1}_{R}(-,-)$, where $d$ is the Krull dimension of $R$. Sufficient conditions are identified under which the Jacobian ideal itself annihilates these Ext-modules, and examples are provided that show that this is not always the case. A crucial new idea is to consider a derived version of the Noether different of an algebra.

Rings whose ideals are isomorphic to trace ideals

Let R be a commutative noetherian ring. Lindo and Pande have recently posed the question asking when every ideal of R is isomorphic to some trace ideal of R. This paper studies this question and gives several answers. In particular, a complete answer is given in the case where R is local: it is proved in this paper that every ideal of R is isomorphic to a trace ideal if and only if R is an artinian Gorenstein ring, or a 1-dimensional hypersurface with multiplicity at most 2, or a unique factorization domain.

Two generalizations of Auslander-Reiten duality and applications

This paper extends Auslander-Reiten duality in two directions. As an application, we obtain various criteria for freeness of modules over local rings in terms of vanishing of Ext modules, which recover a lot of known results on the Auslander-Reiten conjecture.

Applications and homological properties of local rings with decomposable maximal ideals

We construct a local Cohen-Macaulay ring $R$ with a prime ideal $\mathfrak{p}\in\spec(R)$ such that $R$ satisfies the uniform Auslander condition (UAC), but the localization $R_{\mathfrak{p}}$ does not satisfy Auslander's condition (AC). Given any positive integer $n$, we also construct a local Cohen-Macaulay ring $R$ with a prime ideal $\mathfrak{p}\in\spec(R)$ such that $R$ has exactly two non-isomorphic semidualizing modules, but the localization $R_{\mathfrak{p}}$ has $2^n$ non-isomorphic semidualizing modules. Each of these examples is constructed as a fiber product of two local rings over their common residue field. Additionally, we characterize the non-trivial Cohen-Macaulay fiber products of finite Cohen-Macaulay type.

Interpretable and Compositional Relation Learning by Joint Training with an Autoencoder

Embedding models for entities and relations are extremely useful for recovering missing facts in a knowledge base. Intuitively, a relation can be modeled by a matrix mapping entity vectors. However, relations reside on low dimension sub-manifolds in the parameter space of arbitrary matrices---for one reason, composition of two relations $\boldsymbol{M}_1,\boldsymbol{M}_2$ may match a third $\boldsymbol{M}_3$ (e.g. composition of relations currency_of_country and country_of_film usually matches currency_of_film_budget), which imposes compositional constraints to be satisfied by the parameters (i.e. $\boldsymbol{M}_1\cdot \boldsymbol{M}_2\approx \boldsymbol{M}_3$). In this paper we investigate a dimension reduction technique by training relations jointly with an autoencoder, which is expected to better capture compositional constraints. We achieve state-of-the-art on Knowledge Base Completion tasks with strongly improved Mean Rank, and show that joint training with an autoencoder leads to interpretable sparse codings of relations, helps discovering compositional constraints and benefits from compositional training. On the second rigidity theorem of Huneke and Wiegand

In 2007 Huneke and Wiegand announced in an erratum that one of the conclusions of their depth formula theorem is flawed due to an incorrect convention for the depth of the zero module. Since then, the deleted claim has remained unresolved. In this paper we give examples to prove that the deleted claim is false, in general. Moreover, we point out several places in the literature which relied upon this deleted claim or the initial argument from 2007.

Very low scale Coleman-Weinberg inflation with non-minimal coupling

We study viable small-field Coleman-Weinberg (CW) inflation models with the help of non-minimal coupling to gravity. The simplest small-field CW inflation model (with a low-scale potential minimum) is incompatible with the cosmological constraint on the scalar spectral index. However, there are possibilities to make the model realistic. First, we revisit the CW inflation model supplemented with a linear potential term. We next consider the CW inflation model with a logarithmic non-minimal coupling and illustrate that the model can open a new viable parameter space that includes the model with a linear potential term. We also show parameter spaces where the Hubble scale during the inflation can be as small as $10^{-4} $ GeV, $1$ GeV, $10^4 $ GeV, and $10^8$ GeV for the number of $e$-folds of $40,~45,~50$, and $55$, respectively, with other cosmological constraints being satisfied.

Comment on "Energy-time uncertainty relation for driven quantum systems" and "Quantum Speed Limit for Non-Markovian Dynamics"

Deffner and Lutz [J. Phys. A 46, 335302 (2013) and Phys. Rev. Lett. 111, 010402 (2013).] extended the Mandelstam-Tamm bound and the Margolus-Levitin bound to time-dependent and non-Markovian systems, respectively. Although the derivation of the Mandelstam-Tamm bound is correct, we point out that thier analysis of the Margolus-Levitin bound is incorrect. The Margolus-Levitin bound has not yet been established in time-dependent quantum systems, except for the adiabatic case.

On Gorenstein fiber products and applications

We show that a non-trivial fiber product $S\times_k T$ of commutative noetherian local rings $S,T$ with a common residue field $k$ is Gorenstein if and only if it is a hypersurface of dimension 1. In this case, both $S$ and $T$ are regular rings of dimension 1. We also give some applications of this result.

In this paper, we explore when a locally finite triangulated category has dimension zero or finite representation type. We also study generation of derived categories by orthogonal subcategories.

Ulrich modules over Cohen-Macaulay local rings with minimal multiplicity

Let R be a Cohen-Macaulay local ring. In this paper we study the structure of Ulrich $R$-modules mainly in the case where R has minimal multiplicity. We explore generation of Ulrich R-modules, and clarify when the Ulrich R-modules are precisely the syzygies of maximal Cohen-Macaulay R-modules. We also investigate the structure of Ulrich R-modules as an exact category.
