Symmetric Morse potential is exactly solvable

Morse potential $V_M(x)= g^2\exp (2x)-g(2h+1)\exp(x)$ is defined on the full line, $-\infty<x<\infty$ and it defines an exactly solvable 1-d quantum mechanical system with finitely many discrete eigenstates. By taking its right half $0\le x<\infty$ and glueing it with the left half of its mirror image $V_M(-x)$, $-\infty<x\le0$, the symmetric Morse potential $V(x)= g^2\exp (2|x|)-g(2h+1)\exp(|x|)$ is obtained. The quantum mechanical system of this piecewise analytic potential has infinitely many discrete eigenstates with the corresponding eigenfunctions given by the Whittaker W function. The eigenvalues are the square of the zeros of the Whittaker function $W_{k,ν}(x)$ and its linear combination with $W'_{k,ν}(x)$ as a function of $ν$ with fixed $k$ and $x$. This quantum mechanical system seems to offer an interesting example for discussing the Hilbert-Pólya conjecture on the pure imaginary zeros of Riemann zeta function on Re$(s)=\tfrac12$.

Confining non-analytic exponential potential $V(x)= g^2\exp\,(2|x|)$ and its exact Bessel-function solvability

In a previous paper we have shown that Schrödinger equation with the non-analytic attractive exponential potential $V(x)= -g^2\exp (-|x|)$ is exactly solvable. It has finitely many discrete eigenstates described by the Bessel function of the first kind $J_ν(z)$ and the eigenvalues are specified by the positive zeros of $J_ν(g)$ and $J'_ν(g)$ as a function of the order $ν$ with fixed $g>0$. Now we show the corresponding results for the {\em confining\/} non-analytic exponential potential $V(x)= g^2\exp (2|x|)$. This has infinitely many discrete eigenstates described by the modified Bessel function of the second kind $K_{iν}(z)$. The eigenvalues are specified by the {\em pure imaginary zeros\/} of $K_{iν}(g)$ and $K'_{iν}(g)$ as a function of the order with fixed $g>0$.

One-dimensional Schrödinger equation with non-analytic potential $V(x)= -g^2\exp (-|x|)$ and its exact Bessel-function solvability

Exact solvability (ES) of one-dimensional quantum potentials $V(x)$ is a vague concept. We propose that beyond its most conventional range the ES status should be attributed also to many less common interaction models for which the wave functions remain piecewise proportional to special functions. The claim is supported by constructive analysis of a toy model $V(x)= -g^2\exp (-|x|)$. The detailed description of the related bound-state and scattering solutions of Schrödinger equation is provided in terms of Bessel functions which are properly matched in the origin.

Solvable Discrete Quantum Mechanics: q-Orthogonal Polynomials with |q|=1 and Quantum Dilogarithm

Several kinds of q-orthogonal polynomials with |q|=1 are constructed as the main parts of the eigenfunctions of new solvable discrete quantum mechanical systems. Their orthogonality weight functions consist of quantum dilogarithm functions, which are a natural extension of the Euler gamma functions and the q-gamma functions (q-shifted factorials). The dimensions of the orthogonal spaces are finite. These q-orthogonal polynomials are expressed in terms of the Askey-Wilson polynomials and their certain limit forms.

Reflectionless Potentials for Difference Schrödinger Equations

As a part of the program `discrete quantum mechanics,' we present general reflectionless potentials for difference Schrödinger equations with pure imaginary shifts. By combining contiguous integer wave number reflectionless potentials, we construct the discrete analogues of the $h(h+1)/\cosh^2x$ potential with the integer $h$, which belong to the recently constructed families of solvable dynamics having the $q$-ultraspherical polynomials with $|q|=1$ as the main part of the eigenfunctions. For the general ($h\in\mathbb{R}_{>0}$) scattering theory for these potentials, we need the connection formulas for the basic hypergeometric function ${}_2ϕ_1(\genfrac{}{}{0pt}{}{a,b}{c}|q;z)$ with $|q|=1$, which is not known. The connection formulas are expected to contain the quantum dilogarithm functions as the $|q|=1$ counterparts of the $q$-gamma functions. We propose a conjecture of the connection formula of the ${}_2ϕ_1$ function with $|q|=1$. Based on the conjecture, we derive the transmission and reflection amplitudes, which have all the desirable properties. They provide a strong support to the conjectured connection formula.

Perturbations around the zeros of classical orthogonal polynomials

Starting from degree N solutions of a time dependent Schroedinger-like equation for classical orthogonal polynomials, a linear matrix equation describing perturbations around the N zeros of the polynomial is derived. The matrix has remarkable Diophantine properties. Its eigenvalues are independent of the zeros. The corresponding eigenvectors provide the representations of the lower degree (0,1,...,N-1) polynomials in terms of the zeros of the degree N polynomial. The results are valid universally for all the classical orthogonal polynomials, including the Askey scheme of hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials and its q-analogues.

Exactly Solvable Quantum Mechanics

A comprehensive review of exactly solvable quantum mechanics is presented with the emphasis of the recently discovered multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials. The main subjects to be discussed are the factorised Hamiltonians, the general structure of the solution spaces of the Schroedinger equation (Crum's theorem and its modifications), the shape invariance, the exact solvability in the Schroedinger picture as well as in the Heisenberg picture, the creation/annihilation operators and the dynamical symmetry algebras, coherent states, various deformation schemes (multiple Darboux transformations) and the infinite families of multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials, the exceptional orthogonal polynomials, and deformed exactly solvable scattering problems.

Casoratian Identities for the Wilson and Askey-Wilson Polynomials

Infinitely many Casoratian identities are derived for the Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials in parallel to the Wronskian identities for the Hermite, Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials, which were reported recently by the present authors. These identities form the basis of the equivalence between eigenstate adding and deleting Darboux transformations for solvable (discrete) quantum mechanical systems. Similar identities hold for various reduced form polynomials of the Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials, e.g. the continuous q-Jacobi, continuous (dual) (q-)Hahn, Meixner-Pollaczek, Al-Salam-Chihara, continuous (big) q-Hermite, etc.

Composition of Two Potentials

Given two potentials V0 and V1 together with a certain nodeless solution ϕ0 of V0, we form a composition of these two potentials. If V1 is exactly solvable, the composition is exactly solvable, too. By combining various solvable potentials in one-dimensional quantum mechanics, a huge variety of solvable compositions can be made.

Exactly solvable potentials with finitely many discrete eigenvalues of arbitrary choice

We address the problem of possible deformations of exactly solvable potentials having finitely many discrete eigenvalues of arbitrary choice. As Kay and Moses showed in 1956, reflectionless potentials in one dimensional quantum mechanics are exactly solvable. With an additional time dependence these potentials are identified as the soliton solutions of the KdV hierarchy. An $N$-soliton potential has the time $t$ and $2N$ positive parameters, $k_1<...<k_N$ and $c_j$, $j=1,...,N$, corresponding to $N$ discrete eigenvalues $-k_j^2$. The eigenfunctions are elementary functions expressed by the ratio of determinants. The Darboux-Crum-Krein-Adler transformation or the Abraham-Moses transformations based on eigenfunctions deletions produce lower soliton number potentials with modified parameters $c'_j$. We explore various identities satisfied by the eigenfunctions of the soliton potentials, which reflect the uniqueness theorem of Gel'fand-Levitan-Marchenko equations for separable (degenerate) kernels.

Inversion of a mapping associated with the Aomoto-Forrester system

This article is devoted to the study of a general class of Hamiltonian systems which extends the Calogero systems with external quadratic potential associated to any root system. The interest for such a class comes from a previous article of Aomoto and Forrester. We consider first the one-degree of freedom case and compute the Birkhoff series defined near each of its stationary points. In general, the analysis of the system motivates finding some expression for the inverses of a rational map introduced by Aomoto and Forrester. We derive here some diagrammatic expansion series for these inverses.

Non-polynomial extensions of solvable potentials a la Abraham-Moses

Abraham-Moses transformations, besides Darboux transformations, are well-known procedures to generate extensions of solvable potentials in one-dimensional quantum mechanics. Here we present the explicit forms of infinitely many seed solutions for adding eigenstates at arbitrary real energy through the Abraham-Moses transformations for typical solvable potentials, e.g. the radial oscillator, the Darboux-Pöschl-Teller and some others. These seed solutions are simple generalisations of the virtual state wavefunctions, which are obtained from the eigenfunctions by discrete symmetries of the potentials. The virtual state wavefunctions have been an essential ingredient for constructing multi-indexed Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials through multiple Darboux-Crum transformations. In contrast to the Darboux transformations, the virtual state wavefunctions generate non-polynomial extensions of solvable potentials through the Abraham-Moses transformations.

Krein-Adler transformations for shape-invariant potentials and pseudo virtual states

For eleven examples of one-dimensional quantum mechanics with shape-invariant potentials, the Darboux-Crum transformations in terms of multiple pseudo virtual state wavefunctions are shown to be equivalent to Krein-Adler transformations deleting multiple eigenstates with shifted parameters. These are based upon infinitely many polynomial Wronskian identities of classical orthogonal polynomials, i.e. the Hermite, Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials, which constitute the main part of the eigenfunctions of various quantum mechanical systems with shape-invariant potentials.

Extensions of solvable potentials with finitely many discrete eigenstates

We address the problem of rational extensions of six examples of shape-invariant potentials having finitely many discrete eigenstates. The overshoot eigenfunctions are proposed as candidates unique in this group for the virtual state wavefunctions, which are an essential ingredient for multi-indexed and iso-spectral extensions of these potentials. They have exactly the same form as the eigenfunctions but their degrees are much higher than n_{max} so that their energies are lower than the groundstate energy.

Multi-indexed Wilson and Askey-Wilson Polynomials

As the third stage of the project multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials, we present, in the framework of 'discrete quantum mechanics' with pure imaginary shifts in one dimension, the multi-indexed Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials. They are obtained from the original Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials by multiple application of the discrete analogue of the Darboux transformations or the Crum-Krein-Adler deletion of 'virtual state solutions' of type I and II, in a similar way to the multi-indexed Laguerre, Jacobi and (q-)Racah polynomials reported earlier.

Multi-indexed (q-)Racah Polynomials

As the second stage of the project multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials, we present, in the framework of `discrete quantum mechanics' with real shifts in one dimension, the multi-indexed (q-)Racah polynomials. They are obtained from the (q-)Racah polynomials by multiple application of the discrete analogue of the Darboux transformations or the Crum-Krein-Adler deletion of `virtual state' vectors, in a similar way to the multi-indexed Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials reported earlier. The virtual state vectors are the `solutions' of the matrix Schrödinger equation with negative `eigenvalues', except for one of the two boundary points.

Properties of the Exceptional ($X_{\ell}$) Laguerre and Jacobi Polynomials

We present various results on the properties of the four infinite sets of the exceptional $X_{\ell}$ polynomials discovered recently by Odake and Sasaki [{\it Phys. Lett. B} {\bf 679} (2009), 414-417; {\it Phys. Lett. B} {\bf 684} (2010), 173-176]. These $X_{\ell}$ polynomials are global solutions of second order Fuchsian differential equations with $\ell+3$ regular singularities and their confluent limits. We derive equivalent but much simpler looking forms of the $X_{\ell}$ polynomials. The other subjects discussed in detail are: factorisation of the Fuchsian differential operators, shape invariance, the forward and backward shift operations, invariant polynomial subspaces under the Fuchsian differential operators, the Gram-Schmidt orthonormalisation procedure, three term recurrence relations and the generating functions for the $X_{\ell}$ polynomials.
