Discrete Quantum Mechanics

A comprehensive review of the discrete quantum mechanics with the pure imaginary shifts and the real shifts is presented in parallel with the corresponding results in the ordinary quantum mechanics. The main subjects to be covered are the factorised Hamiltonians, the general structure of the solution spaces of the Schroedinger equation (Crum's theorem and its modification), the shape invariance, the exact solvability in the Schroedinger picture as well as in the Heisenberg picture, the creation/annihilation operators and the dynamical symmetry algebras, the unified theory of exact and quasi-exact solvability based on the sinusoidal coordinates, the infinite families of new orthogonal (the exceptional) polynomials. Two new infinite families of orthogonal polynomials, the X_\ell Meixner-Pollaczek and the X_\ell Meixner polynomials are reported.

Exactly Solvable Quantum Mechanics and Infinite Families of Multi-indexed Orthogonal Polynomials

Infinite families of multi-indexed orthogonal polynomials are discovered as the solutions of exactly solvable one-dimensional quantum mechanical systems. The simplest examples, the one-indexed orthogonal polynomials, are the infinite families of the exceptional Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials of type I and II constructed by the present authors. The totality of the integer indices of the new polynomials are finite and they correspond to the degrees of the `virtual state wavefunctions' which are `deleted' by the generalisation of Crum-Adler theorem. Each polynomial has another integer n which counts the nodes.

Dual Christoffel transformations

Crum's theorem and its modification a la Krein-Adler are formulated for the discrete quantum mechanics with real shifts, whose eigenfunctions consist of orthogonal polynomials of a discrete variable. The modification produces the associated polynomials with a finite number of degrees deleted. This in turn provides the well known Christoffel transformation for the dual orthogonal polynomials with the corresponding positions deleted.

The Exceptional (X_{\ell}) (q)-Racah Polynomials

The exceptional Racah and q-Racah polynomials are constructed. Together with the exceptional Laguerre, Jacobi, Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials discovered by the present authors in 2009, they exhaust the generic exceptional orthogonal polynomials of a single variable.

A new family of shape invariantly deformed Darboux-Pöschl-Teller potentials with continuous \ell

We present a new family of shape invariant potentials which could be called a ``continuous \ell version" of the potentials corresponding to the exceptional (X_{\ell}) J1 Jacobi polynomials constructed recently by the present authors. In a certain limit, it reduces to a continuous \ell family of shape invariant potentials related to the exceptional (X_{\ell}) L1 Laguerre polynomials. The latter was known as one example of the `conditionally exactly solvable potentials' on a half line.

Exceptional Askey-Wilson type polynomials through Darboux-Crum transformations

An alternative derivation is presented of the infinitely many exceptional Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials, which were introduced by the present authors in 2009. Darboux-Crum transformations intertwining the discrete quantum mechanical systems of the original and the exceptional polynomials play an important role. Infinitely many continuous Hahn polynomials are derived in the same manner. The present method provides a simple proof of the shape invariance of these systems as in the corresponding cases of the exceptional Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials.

Modification of Crum's Theorem for `Discrete' Quantum Mechanics

Crum's theorem in one-dimensional quantum mechanics asserts the existence of an associated Hamiltonian system for any given Hamiltonian with the complete set of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions. The associated system is iso-spectral to the original one except for the lowest energy state, which is deleted. A modification due to Krein-Adler provides algebraic construction of a new complete Hamiltonian system by deleting a finite number of energy levels. Here we present a discrete version of the modification based on the Crum's theorem for the `discrete' quantum mechanics developed by two of the present authors.

Exceptional Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials and the corresponding potentials through Darboux-Crum Transformations

Simple derivation is presented of the four families of infinitely many shape invariant Hamiltonians corresponding to the exceptional Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials. Darboux-Crum transformations are applied to connect the well-known shape invariant Hamiltonians of the radial oscillator and the Darboux-Pöschl-Teller potential to the shape invariant potentials of Odake-Sasaki. Dutta and Roy derived the two lowest members of the exceptional Laguerre polynomials by this method. The method is expanded to its full generality and many other ramifications, including the aspects of generalised Bochner problem and the bispectral property of the exceptional orthogonal polynomials, are discussed.

Exactly and quasi-exactly solvable `discrete' quantum mechanics

Brief introduction to the discrete quantum mechanics is given together with the main results on various exactly solvable systems. Namely, the intertwining relations, shape invariance, Heisenberg operator solutions, annihilation/creation operators, dynamical symmetry algebras including the $q$-oscillator algebra and the Askey-Wilson algebra. A simple recipe to construct exactly and quasi-exactly solvable Hamiltonians in one-dimensional `discrete' quantum mechanics is presented. It reproduces all the known ones whose eigenfunctions consist of the Askey scheme of hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials of a continuous or a discrete variable. Several new exactly and quasi-exactly solvable ones are constructed. The sinusoidal coordinate plays an essential role.

Another set of infinitely many exceptional (X_{\ell}) Laguerre polynomials

We present a new set of infinitely many shape invariant potentials and the corresponding exceptional (X_{\ell}) Laguerre polynomials. They are to supplement the recently derived two sets of infinitely many shape invariant thus exactly solvable potentials in one dimensional quantum mechanics and the corresponding X_{\ell} Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials (Odake and Sasaki, Phys. Lett. B679 (2009) 414-417). The new X_{\ell} Laguerre polynomials and the potentials are obtained by a simple limiting procedure from the known X_{\ell} Jacobi polynomials and the potentials, whereas the known X_{\ell} Laguerre polynomials and the potentials are obtained in the same manner from the mirror image of the known X_{\ell} Jacobi polynomials and the potentials.

Bethe Ansatz Solutions to Quasi Exactly Solvable Difference Equations

Bethe ansatz formulation is presented for several explicit examples of quasi exactly solvable difference equations of one degree of freedom which are introduced recently by one of the present authors. These equations are deformation of the well-known exactly solvable difference equations of the Meixner-Pollaczek, continuous Hahn, continuous dual Hahn, Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials. Up to an overall factor of the so-called pseudo ground state wavefunction, the eigenfunctions within the exactly solvable subspace are given by polynomials whose roots are solutions of the associated Bethe ansatz equations. The corresponding eigenvalues are expressed in terms of these roots.

Infinitely many shape invariant discrete quantum mechanical systems and new exceptional orthogonal polynomials related to the Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials

Two sets of infinitely many exceptional orthogonal polynomials related to the Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials are presented. They are derived as the eigenfunctions of shape invariant and thus exactly solvable quantum mechanical Hamiltonians, which are deformations of those for the Wilson and Askey-Wilson polynomials in terms of a degree \ell (\ell=1,2,...) eigenpolynomial. These polynomials are exceptional in the sense that they start from degree \ell\ge1 and thus not constrained by any generalisation of Bochner's theorem.

Infinitely many shape invariant potentials and cubic identities of the Laguerre and Jacobi polynomials

We provide analytic proofs for the shape invariance of the recently discovered (Odake and Sasaki, Phys. Lett. B679 (2009) 414-417) two families of infinitely many exactly solvable one-dimensional quantum mechanical potentials. These potentials are obtained by deforming the well-known radial oscillator potential or the Darboux-Pöschl-Teller potential by a degree \ell (\ell=1,2,...) eigenpolynomial. The shape invariance conditions are attributed to new polynomial identities of degree 3\ell involving cubic products of the Laguerre or Jacobi polynomials. These identities are proved elementarily by combining simple identities.

Crum's Theorem for `Discrete' Quantum Mechanics

In one-dimensional quantum mechanics, or the Sturm-Liouville theory, Crum's theorem describes the relationship between the original and the associated Hamiltonian systems, which are iso-spectral except for the lowest energy state. Its counterpart in `discrete' quantum mechanics is formulated algebraically, elucidating the basic structure of the discrete quantum mechanics, whose Schrödinger equation is a difference equation.

Infinitely many shape invariant potentials and new orthogonal polynomials

Three sets of exactly solvable one-dimensional quantum mechanical potentials are presented. These are shape invariant potentials obtained by deforming the radial oscillator and the trigonometric/hyperbolic Pöschl-Teller potentials in terms of their degree \ell polynomial eigenfunctions. We present the entire eigenfunctions for these Hamiltonians (\ell=1,2,...) in terms of new orthogonal polynomials. Two recently reported shape invariant potentials of Quesne and Gómez-Ullate et al's are the first members of these infinitely many potentials.

Exactly Solvable Birth and Death Processes

Many examples of exactly solvable birth and death processes, a typical stationary Markov chain, are presented together with the explicit expressions of the transition probabilities. They are derived by similarity transforming exactly solvable `matrix' quantum mechanics, which is recently proposed by Odake and the author. The ($q$-)Askey-scheme of hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials of a discrete variable and their dual polynomials play a central role. The most generic solvable birth/death rates are rational functions of $q^x$ ($x$ being the population) corresponding to the $q$-Racah polynomial.

Unified theory of exactly and quasi-exactly solvable `Discrete' quantum mechanics: I. Formalism

We present a simple recipe to construct exactly and quasi-exactly solvable Hamiltonians in one-dimensional `discrete' quantum mechanics, in which the Schrödinger equation is a difference equation. It reproduces all the known ones whose eigenfunctions consist of the Askey scheme of hypergeometric orthogonal polynomials of a continuous or a discrete variable. The recipe also predicts several new ones. An essential role is played by the sinusoidal coordinate, which generates the closure relation and the Askey-Wilson algebra together with the Hamiltonian. The relationship between the closure relation and the Askey-Wilson algebra is clarified.

q-oscillator from the q-Hermite Polynomial

By factorization of the Hamiltonian describing the quantum mechanics of the continuous q-Hermite polynomial, the creation and annihilation operators of the q-oscillator are obtained. They satisfy a q-oscillator algebra as a consequence of the shape-invariance of the Hamiltonian. A second set of q-oscillator is derived from the exact Heisenberg operator solution. Now the q-oscillator stands on the equal footing to the ordinary harmonic oscillator.
