Study of chargino-neutralino production at hadron colliders in a long-lived slepton scenario

The differential cross section of the chargino-neutralino production, q qbar --> chi+- chi0, followed by their decays into scalar tau leptons, chi+- chi0 --> (stau+- nu)(stau-+ tau+-) --> (stau+- nu)(stau-+ l+- nu nubar), is calculated including the effect of spin correlations. In the case where stau is long-lived, this final state can be fully reconstructed in a hadron-collider experiment up to a discrete two-fold ambiguity. Distributions of various kinematic variables can thus be observable and tell us about masses and spins of superparticles and also parity/CP violation in interactions by comparing with the cross-section formula. Observing non-trivial distributions derived in this paper will be a good test of supersymmetry.

Unified origin of baryons and dark matter

We investigate the possibility that both the baryon asymmetry of the universe and the observed cold dark matter density are generated by decays of a heavy scalar field which dominates the universe before nucleosynthesis. Since baryons and cold dark matter have common origin, this mechanism yields a natural explanation of the similarity of the corresponding energy densities. The cosmological moduli and gravitino problems are avoided.

A Clean Slepton Mixing Signal at the LHC

In supersymmetric scenarios where the scalar tau lepton is stable or long-lived, a search for a decay mode chi0 --> stau + mu at the LHC has a good sensitivity to the flavor mixing in the scalar lepton sector. We demonstrate that the sensitivities to the mixing angle at the level of sin(theta)=0.15 are possible with an integrated luminosity of 100fb^{-1} if the total production cross section of supersymmetric particles is of the order of 1pb. The sensitivity to the mixing parameter can be better than the experimental bound from the tau --> mu + gamma decay depending on model parameters.

Supersymmetric Model Building (and Sweet Spot Supersymmetry)

It has been more than twenty years since theorists started discussing supersymmetric model building/phenomenology. We review mechanisms of supersymmetry breaking/mediation and problems in each scenario. We propose a simple model to address those problems and discuss its phenomenology.

Sweet Spot Supersymmetry and Composite Messengers

Sweet spot supersymmetry is a phenomenologically and cosmologically perfect framework to realize a supersymmetric world at short distance. We discuss a class of dynamical models of supersymmetry breaking and its mediation whose low-energy effective description falls into this framework. Hadron fields in the dynamical models play a role of the messengers of the supersymmetry breaking. As is always true in the models of the sweet spot supersymmetry, the messenger scale is predicted to be 10^5 GeV < M_mess < 10^{10} GeV. Various values of the effective number of messenger fields N_mess are possible depending on the choice of the gauge group.

Sweet Spot Supersymmetry

We find that there is no supersymmetric flavor/CP problem, mu-problem, cosmological moduli/gravitino problem or dimension four/five proton decay problem in a class of supersymmetric theories with O(1) GeV gravitino mass. The cosmic abundance of the non-thermally produced gravitinos naturally explains the dark matter component of the universe. A mild hierarchy between the mass scale of supersymmetric particles and electroweak scale is predicted, consistent with the null result of a search for the Higgs boson at the LEP-II experiments. A relation to the strong CP problem is addressed. We propose a parametrization of the model for the purpose of collider studies. The scalar tau lepton is the next to lightest supersymmetric particle in a theoretically favored region of the parameter space. The lifetime of the scalar tau is of O(1000) seconds with which it is regarded as a charged stable particle in collider experiments. We discuss characteristic signatures and a strategy for confirmation of this class of theories at the LHC experiments.

Gauge mediation in supergravity and gravitino dark matter

Gravitinos and hidden sector fields often cause a cosmological disaster in supersymmetric models. We find that a model with gravitational gauge mediation solves such a problem quite naturally. The mu-problem is also absent in the model. Moreover, the abundance of gravitinos explains correct amount of dark matter of the universe. The dark matter abundance can be calculated without detailed information on the thermal history of the universe such as the reheating temperature after inflation.

Direct Mediation of Meta-Stable Supersymmetry Breaking

The supersymmetric SU(Nc) Yang-Mills theory coupled to Nf matter fields in the fundamental representation has meta-stable vacua with broken supersymmetry when Nc < Nf < 3/2 Nc. By gauging the flavor symmetry, this model can be coupled directly to the standard model. We show that it is possible to make a slight deformation to the model so that gaugino masses are generated and the Landau pole problem can be avoided. The deformed model has simple realizations on intersecting branes in string theory, where various features of the meta-stable vacua are encoded geometrically as brane configurations.

Dynamical GUT breaking and mu-term driven supersymmetry breaking

Models for dynamical breaking of supersymmetric grand unified theories are presented. The doublet-triplet splitting problem is absent since the Higgs doublet superfields can be identified with the massless mesons of the strong gauge group whereas there are no massless states corresponding to the colored Higgs fields. Various strong gauge groups SU(Nc), Sp(Nc) and SO(Nc) are examined. In a model with SO(9) strong gauge group, adding the mu-term for the Higgs fields triggers to break supersymmetry in a meta-stable vacuum. The pattern of the supersymmetry breaking parameters is predicted to be the gauge-mediation type with modifications in the Higgs sector.

Gravitational Gauge Mediation

It is often the case that the naive introduction of the messenger sector to supersymmetry breaking models causes restoration of supersymmetry. We discuss a possibility of stabilizing the supersymmetry breaking vacuum by gravitational interaction.

Supersymmetry with Small mu: Connections between Naturalness, Dark Matter, and (Possibly) Flavor

Weak scale supersymmetric theories often suffer from several naturalness problems: the problems of reproducing the correct scale for electroweak symmetry breaking, the correct abundance for dark matter, and small rates for flavor violating processes. We argue that the first two problems point to particular regions of parameter space in models with weak scale supersymmetry: those with a small mu term. This has an interesting implication on direct dark matter detection experiments. We find that, if the signs of the three gaugino mass parameters are all equal, we can obtain a solid lower bound on the spin-independent neutralino-nucleon cross section, σ. In the case that the gaugino masses satisfy the unified mass relations, we obtain σ> 4 x 10^{-46} cm^2 (1 x 10^{-46} cm^2) for fine-tuning in electroweak symmetry breaking no worse than 10% (5%). We also discuss a possibility that the three problems listed above are all connected to the hierarchy of fermion masses. This occurs if supersymmetry breaking and electroweak symmetry breaking (the Higgs fields) are coupled to matter fields with similar hierarchical structures. The discovery of mu -> e transition processes in near future experiments is predicted in such a framework.

Moduli Decays and Gravitinos

One proposed solution of the moduli problem of string cosmology requires that the moduli are quite heavy, their decays reheating the universe to temperatures above the scale of nucleosynthesis. In many of these scenarios, the moduli are approximately supersymmetric; it is then crucial that the decays to gravitinos are helicity suppressed. In this paper, we discuss situations where these decays are, and are not, suppressed. We also comment on a possible gravitino problem from inflaton decay.

Supersymmetry, Naturalness, and Signatures at the LHC

Weak scale supersymmetry is often said to be fine-tuned, especially if the matter content is minimal. This is not true if there is a large A term for the top squarks. We present a systematic study on fine-tuning in minimal supersymmetric theories and identify low energy spectra that do not lead to severe fine-tuning. Characteristic features of these spectra are: a large A term for the top squarks, small top squark masses, moderately large tanβ, and a small μparameter. There are classes of theories leading to these features, which are discussed. In one class, which allows a complete elimination of fine-tuning, the Higgsinos are the lightest among all the superpartners of the standard model particles, leading to three nearly degenerate neutralino/chargino states. This gives interesting signals at the LHC -- the dilepton invariant mass distribution has a very small endpoint and shows a particular shape determined by the Higgsino nature of the two lightest neutralinos. We demonstrate that these signals are indeed useful in realistic analyses by performing Monte Carlo simulations, including detector simulations and background estimations. We also present a method that allows the determination of all the relevant superparticle masses without using input from particular models, despite the limited kinematical information due to short cascades. This allows us to test various possible models, which is demonstrated in the case of a model with mixed moduli-anomaly mediation. We also give a simple derivation of special renormalization group properties associated with moduli mediated supersymmetry breaking, which are relevant in a model without fine-tuning.

Dark Matter before the LHC in a Natural Supersymmetric Standard Model

We show that the solid lower bound of about 10^{-44} cm^2 is obtained for the cross section between the supersymmetric dark matter and nucleon in a theory in which the supersymmetric fine-tuning problem is solved without extending the Higgs sector at the weak scale. This bound arises because of relatively small superparticle masses and a fortunate correlation that the two dominant diagrams for the dark matter detection always interfere constructively if the constraint from the b -> s γmeasurements is obeyed. It is, therefore, quite promising in the present scenario that the supersymmetric dark matter is discovered before the LHC, assuming that the dark matter is the lightest supersymmetric particle.

A Solution to the Supersymmetric Fine-Tuning Problem within the MSSM

Weak scale supersymmetry has a generic problem of fine-tuning in reproducing the correct scale for electroweak symmetry breaking. The problem is particularly severe in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the standard model (MSSM). We present a solution to this problem that does not require an extension of the MSSM at the weak scale. Superparticle masses are generated by a comparable mixture of moduli and anomaly mediated contributions, and the messenger scale of supersymmetry breaking is effectively lowered to the TeV region. Crucial elements for the solution are a large A term for the top squarks and a small B term for the Higgs doublets. Requiring no fine-tuning worse than 20%, we obtain rather sharp predictions on the spectrum. The gaugino masses are almost universal at the weak scale with the mass between 450 and 900 GeV. The squark and slepton masses are also nearly universal at the weak scale with the mass a factor of \sqrt{2} smaller than that of the gauginos. The only exception is the top squarks whose masses split from the other squark masses by about m_t/\sqrt{2}. The lightest Higgs boson mass is smaller than 120 GeV, while the ratio of the vacuum expectation values for the two Higgs doublets, tanβ, is larger than about 5. The lightest superparticle is the neutral Higgsino of the mass below 190 GeV, which can be dark matter of the universe. The mass of the lighter top squark can be smaller than 300 GeV, which may be relevant for Run II at the Tevatron.

Natural soft leptogenesis

Successful soft leptogenesis requires small B-terms for the right-handed sneutrinos and a large CP violating phase between the A- and B-terms. We show that this situation is realized naturally within the framework of gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking. The A-term is dominated by contribution from gauge mediation, while supergravity effects are more important for the B-term. The different origins naturally explain simultaneously the smallness of the B-term and the large CP violating phase. The most stringent bounds on the model come from the cosmological gravitino problem. We find a viable parameter region with very light gravitino $m_{3/2} \lesssim 16 eV$, providing a consistent framework for supersymmetry phenomenology, soft leptogenesis and cosmology.

Grand Unification, Dark Matter, Baryon Asymmetry, and the Small Scale Structure of the Universe

We consider a minimal grand unified model where the dark matter arises from non-thermal decays of a messenger particle in the TeV range. The messenger particle compensates for the baryon asymmetry in the standard model and gives similar number densities to both the baryon and the dark matter. The non-thermal dark matter, if massive in the GeV range, could have a free-streaming scale in the order of 0.1 Mpc and potentially resolve the discrepancies between observations and the LCDM model on the small scale structure of the Universe. Moreover, a GeV scale dark matter naturally leads to the observed puzzling proximity of baryonic and dark matter densities. Unification of gauge couplings is achieved by choosing a "Higgsino" messenger.
