Kitaev Magnetism and Fractionalized Excitations in Double Perovskite Sm2ZnIrO6

The quest for Kitaev spin liquids in particular three dimensional solids is long sought goal in condensed matter physics, as these states may give rise to exotic new types of quasi-particle excitations carrying fractional quantum numbers namely Majorana Fermionic excitations. Here we report the experimental signature of this characteristic feature of the Kitaev spin liquid via Raman measurements. Sm2ZnIrO6 is a strongly spin orbit coupled Mott insulator, where Jeff = 1/2 controls the physics, which provide striking evidence for this characteristic feature of the Kitaev spin liquid. As the temperature is lowered, we find that the spin excitations form a continuum in contrast to the conventional sharp modes expected in ordered antiferromagnets. Our observation of a broad magnetic continuum and anomalous renormalization of the phonon self-energy parameters evidence the existence of Majorana fermions from spin fractionalization in double perovskites structure as theoretically conjectured in a Kitaev-Heisenberg geometrically frustrated double perovskite systems.

Complex magnetic properties in the mixed 4f -5d double perovskite iridates Ln2ZnIrO6 (Ln = Nd, Sm, Eu & Gd)

In this work, we report on the synthesis and magnetic properties of a series of double perovskites Ln$_2$ZnIrO$_6$ with Ln = Nd, Sm, Eu & Gd. These compounds present new examples of the rare case of double perovskites (general formula A$_2$BB'O$_6$) with a magnetic 4f -ion on the A-site in combination with the strongly spin-orbit coupled 5d-transition metal ion Ir$^{4+}$ on the B-sublattice. We discuss the impact of different rare earths on the macroscopic magnetic properties. Gd$_2$ZnIrO$_6$ and Eu$_2$ZnIrO$_6$ show weak canted antiferromagnetic order below T$_N$ = 23 K and T$_N$ = 12 K, respectively. Sm$_2$ZnIrO$_6$ orders antiferromagnetically at T$_N$ = 13 K. Nd$_2$ZnIrO$_6$ exhibits complex magnetic properties with strong field dependence ranging from a two-step behavior at H = 0.01 T to an antiferromagnetic ground state at intermediate external fields and a spin-flop phase at H$\geq$4 T, which suggests complex interplay between Nd$^{3+}$ and Ir$^{4+}$ . To further shed light on this magnetic interaction, the magnetic structure of Nd$_2$ZnIrO$_6$'s ground state is examined via neutron powder diffraction.

Disordered magnetism in the double perovskite LaCaScIrO6 with a distorted fcc lattice of Ir4+

The synthesis and characterization of the previously unknown material LaCaScIrO$_6$ is reported. LaCaScIrO$_6$ presents a new example of the rare case of a double perovskite with the strongly spin-orbit coupled 5\textit{d}-ion Ir$^{4+}$ as its only magnetic species, forming a monoclinically distorted version of the frustrated fcc lattice. Magnetization measurements show a weak anomaly at 8~K. The Curie-Weiss temperature Θ$_{CW}$ and effective magnetic moment μ$_{eff}$ of LaCaScIrO$_6$ are in close proximity to the related compound La$_2$MgIrO$_6$ but differ from La$_2$ZnIrO$_6$. This suggests that the nature of the non-magnetic \textit{B}-ion, namely its \textit{d}-orbital filling has a strong influence on the magnetic properties. The \textit{d}$^{0}$-ions Sc$^{3+}$ and Mg$^{2+}$ allow a different kind of exchange interactions within the Ir-sublattice than the \textit{d}$^{10}$-ion Zn$^{2+}$. In addition, ac-susceptibility data does not show signs of a spin-glass ground state. The nature of the magnetism in LaCaScIrO$_6$ has been further elucidated using muon spin relaxation measurements. The zero-field measurements reveal the absence of well defined oscillations down to 1.6\,K, while temperature dependent $μ$SR studies show an anomaly at 8\,K. Overall, our results suggest the presence of two different magnetic environments or domains in LaCaScIrO$_6$, which is likely related to its structural features.

Strong Spin Resonance Mode associated with suppression of soft magnetic ordering in Hole-doped Ba1-xNaxFe2As2

Spin-resonance modes (SRM) are taken as evidence for magnetically driven pairing in Fe-based superconductors, but their character remains poorly understood. The broadness, the splitting and the spin-space anisotropies of SRMs contrast with the mostly accepted interpretation as spin excitons. We study hole-doped Ba$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ that displays a spin reorientation transition. This reorientation has little impact on the overall appearance of the resonance excitations with a high-energy isotropic and a low-energy anisotropic mode. However, the strength of the anisotropic low-energy mode sharply peaks at the highest doping that still exhibits magnetic ordering resulting in the strongest SRM observed in any Fe-based superconductor so far. This remarkably strong SRM is accompanied by a loss of about half of the magnetic Bragg intensity upon entering the SC phase. Anisotropic SRMs thus can allow the system to compensate for the loss of exchange energy arising from the reduced antiferromagnetic correlations within the SC state.

Evidence of hot and cold spots on the Fermi surface of LiFeAs

Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is used to study the energy and momentum dependence of the inelastic scattering rates and the mass renormalization of charge carriers in LiFeAs at several high symmetry points in the Brillouin zone. A strong and linear-in-energy scattering rate is observed for sections of the Fermi surface having predominantly Fe $3d_{xy/yz}$ orbital character on the inner hole and on electron pockets. We assign them to hot spots with marginal Fermi liquid character inducing high antiferromagnetic and pairing susceptibilities. The outer hole pocket, with Fe $3d_{xy}$ orbital character, has a reduced but still linear in energy scattering rate. Finally, we assign sections on the middle hole pockets with Fe $3d_{xz,yz}$ orbital character and on the electron pockets with Fe $3d_{xy}$ orbital character to cold spots because there we observe a quadratic-in-energy scattering rate with Fermi-liquid behavior. These cold spots prevail the transport properties. Our results indicate a strong $\it{momentum}$ dependence of the scattering rates. We also have indications that the scattering rates in correlated systems are fundamentally different from those in non-correlated materials because in the former the Pauli principle is not operative. We compare our results for the scattering rates with combined density functional plus dynamical mean-field theory calculations. The work provides a generic microscopic understanding of macroscopic properties of multiorbital unconventional superconductors.

Magnetic anisotropy and spin-polarized two-dimensional electron gas in the van der Waals ferromagnet Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$

We report a comprehensive experimental investigation on the magnetic anisotropy in bulk single crystals of Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$, a quasi-two-dimensional ferromagnet belonging to the family of magnetic layered transition metal trichalcogenides that have attracted recently a big deal of interest with regard to the fundamental and applied aspects of two-dimensional magnetism. For this purpose electron spin resonance (ESR) and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) measurements have been carried out over a wide frequency and temperature range. A gradual change in the angular dependence of the ESR linewidth at temperatures above the ferromagnetic transition temperature $T_{\rm c}$ reveals the development of two-dimensional spin correlations in the vicinity of $T_{\rm c}$ thereby proving the intrinsically low-dimensional character of spin dynamics in Cr$_2$Ge$_2$Te$_6$. Angular and frequency dependent measurements in the ferromagnetic phase clearly show an easy-axis type anisotropy of this compound. Furthermore, these experiments are compared with simulations based on a phenomenological approach, which takes into account results of static magnetization measurements as well as high temperature $g$ factors obtained from ESR spectroscopy in the paramagnetic phase. As a result the determined magnetocrystalline anisotropy energy density (MAE) $K_U$ is $(0.48 \pm 0.02) \times10^6$ erg/cm$^3$. This analysis is complemented by density functional calculations which yield the experimental MAE value for a particular value of the electronic correlation strength $U$. The analysis of the electronic structure reveals that the low-lying conduction band carries almost completely spin-polarized, quasi-homogeneous, two-dimensional states.

Emerging superconductivity with broken time reversal symmetry inside a superconducting $s$-wave state

In general, magnetism and superconductivity are antagonistic to each other. However, there are several families of superconductors, in which superconductivity may coexist with magnetism, and only a few examples are known, when superconductivity itself induces spontaneous magnetism. The most known compounds are Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ and some noncentrosymmetric superconductors. Here, we report the finding of a narrow dome of a novel $s+is'$ superconducting (SC) phase with broken time-reversal symmetry (BTRS) inside the broad $s$-wave SC region of the centrosymmetric multiband superconductor Ba$_{\rm 1-x}$K$_{\rm x}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ ($0.7 \lesssim x \lesssim 0.85$). We observe spontaneous magnetic fields inside this dome using the muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) technique. Furthermore, our detailed specific heat study reveals that the BTRS dome appears very close to a change in the topology of the Fermi surface (Lifshitz transition). With this, we experimentally demonstrate the emergence of a novel quantum state due to topological changes of the electronic system.

Charge and nematic orders in AFe$_2$As$_2$ (A= Rb,Cs) superconductors

We discuss the results of $^{75}$As Nuclear Quadrupole Resonance (NQR) and muon spin relaxation measurements in AFe$_2$As$_2$ (A= Cs, Rb) iron-based superconductors. We demonstrate that the crossover detected in the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate $1/T_1$ (around 150 K in RbFe$_2$As$_2$ and around 75 K in CsFe$_2$As$_2$), from a high temperature nearly localized to a low temperature delocalized behaviour, is associated with the onset of an inhomogeneous local charge distribution causing the broadening or even the splitting of the NQR spectra as well as an increase in the muon spin relaxation rate. We argue that this crossover, occurring at temperatures well above the phase transition to the nematic long-range order, is associated with a charge disproportionation at the Fe sites induced by competing Hund's and Coulomb couplings. In RbFe$_2$As$_2$ around 35 K, far below that crossover temperature, we observe a peak in the NQR $1/T_1$ which is possibly associated with the critical slowing down of electronic nematic fluctuations on approaching the transition to the nematic long-range order.

Yanson point-contact spectroscopy of Weyl semimetal WTe2

We carried out point contact (PC) investigation of WTe2 single crystals. We measured Yanson d2V/dI2 PC spectra of the electron-phonon interaction (EPI) in WTe2. The spectra demonstrate a main phonon peak around 8 meV and a shallow second maximum near 16 meV. Their position is in line with the calculation of the EPI spectra of WTe2 in the literature, albeit phonons with higher energy are not resolved in our PC spectra. An additional contribution to the spectra is present above the phonon energy, what may be connected with the peculiar electronic band structure and need to be clarified. We detected tiny superconducting features in d2V/dI2 close to zero bias, which broadens by increasing temperature and blurs above 6K. Thus, (surface) superconductivity may exist in WTe2 with a topologically nontrivial state. We found a broad maximum in dV/dI at large voltages (>200 mV) indicating change of conductivity from metallic to semiconducting type. The latter might be induced by the high current density (~10^8 A/cm^2) in the PC and/or local heating, thus enabling the manipulation of the quantum electronic states at the interface in the PC core.

Superconductivity-induced nematicity

The role of nematic order for the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity is highly debated. In most iron-based superconductors (IBS) the tetragonal symmetry is broken already in the normal state, resulting in orthorhombic lattice distortions, static stripe magnetic order, or both. Superconductivity then emerges, at least at weak doping, already from the state with broken $C_4$ rotational symmetry. One of the few stoichiometric IBS, lithium iron arsenide, superconducts below 18 K and does not display either structural or magnetic transition in the normal state. Here we demonstrate, using angle-resolved photoemission, that even superconducting state in LiFeAs is also a nematic one. We observe spontaneous breaking of the rotational symmetry in the gap amplitude on all Fermi surfaces, as well as unidirectional distortion of the Fermi pockets. Remarkably, these deformations disappear above superconducting $T_c$. Our results demonstrate the realization of a novel phenomenon of superconductivity-induced nematicity in IBS, emphasizing the intimate relation between them. We suggest a theoretical explanation based on the emergence of a secondary instability inside the superconducting state, which leads to the nematic order and s-d mixing in the gap function.

Massive Dirac fermions in layered BaZnBi$_2$

Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory (DFT) we study the electronic structure of layered BaZnBi$_2$. Our experimental results show no evidence of Dirac states in BaZnBi$_2$ originated either from the bulk or the surface. The calculated band structure without spin-orbit interaction shows several linear dispersive band crossing points throughout the Brillouin zone. However, as soon as the spin-orbit interaction is turned on, the band crossing points are significantly gapped out. The experimental observations are in good agreement with our DFT calculations. These observations suggest that the Dirac fermions in BaZnBi$_2$ are trivial and massive. We also observe experimentally that the electronic structure of BaZnBi$_2$ comprises of several linear dispersive bands in the vicinity of Fermi level dispersing to a wider range of binding energy.

Mass enhancements and band shifts in strongly hole overdoped Fe-based pnictide superconductors: KFe$_2$As$_2$ and CsFe$_2$As$_2$

The interplay of high and low-energy mass renormalizations with band-shifts reflected by the positions of van Hove singularities (VHS) in the normal state spectra of the highest hole-overdoped and strongly correlated AFe$_2$As$_2$ (A122) with A = K, Cs is discussed phenomenologically based on ARPES data and GGA band-structure calculations with full spin-orbit coupling. The big increase of the Sommerfeld coefficient $γ$ from K122 to Cs122 is ascribed to an enhanced coupling to low-energy bosons in the vicinity of a quantum critical point to an unknown, yet incommensurate phase different from the commensurate Mott one. We find no sizeable increase in correlations for Cs122 in contrast to F. Eilers et al., PRL v. 116, 237003 (2016) [3]. The empirical (ARPES) VHS positions as compared with GGA-predictions point even to slightly weaker correlations in Cs122 in accord with low-$T$ magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$ data and a decreasing Wilson ratio $\propto χ(0)/γ$.

Surface superconductivity in the Weyl semimetal MoTe2 detected by point contact spectroscopy

MoTe2 is a Weyl semimetal, which exhibits unique non-saturating magnetoresistance and strongly reinforced superconductivity under pressure. Here, we demonstrate that a novel mesoscopic superconductivity at ambient pressure arises on the surface of MoTe2 with a critical temperature up to 5 K significantly exceeding the bulk Tc=0.1K. We measured the derivatives of I-V curves for metallic hetero-contacts of MoTe2 with Ag or Cu, homo-contacts of MoTe2 as well as "soft" point contacts (PCs). Large number of these hetero-contacts exhibit a dV/dI dependence, which is characteristic for Andreev reflection. It allows to determine the superconducting gap Δ. The average gap values are 2Δ=1.30+/-0.15 meV with a 2Δ/kBTc ratio of 3.7+/-0.4, which slightly exceeds the standard BCS value of 3.52. Furthermore, the temperature dependence of the gap follows a BCS-like behavior, which points to a nodeless superconducting order parameter with some strong-coupling renormalization. Remarkably, the observation of a "gapless-like" single minimum in the dV/dI of "soft" PCs may indicate a topological superconducting state of the MoTe2 surface as these contacts probe mainly the interface and avoid additional pressure effect. Therefore, MoTe2 might be a suitable material to study new forms of topological superconductivity.

Nematicity and magnetism in LaFeAsO single crystals probed by $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance

We report a $^{75}$As nuclear magnetic resonance study in LaFeAsO single crystals, which undergoes nematic and antiferromagnetic transitions at $T_\text{nem}\sim 156$ K and $T_N \sim 138$ K, respectively. Below $T_\text{nem}$, the $^{75}$As spectrum splits sharply into two for an external magnetic field parallel to the orthorhombic $a$ or $b$ axis in the FeAs planes. Our analysis of the data demonstrates that the NMR line splitting arises from an electronically driven rotational symmetry breaking. The $^{75}$As spin-lattice relaxation rate as a function of temperature shows that spin fluctuations are strongly enhanced just below $T_\text{nem}$. These NMR findings indicate that nematic order promotes spin fluctuations in magnetically ordered LaFeAsO, as observed in non-magnetic and superconducting FeSe. We conclude that the origin of nematicity is identical in both FeSe and LaFeAsO regardless of whether or not a long range magnetic order develops in the nematic state.

3D superconducting gap in FeSe from ARPES

We present a systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study of the superconducting gap in FeSe. The gap function is determined in a full Brillouin zone including all Fermi surfaces and kz-dependence. We find significant anisotropy of the superconducting gap in all momentum directions. While the in-plane anisotropy can be explained by both, nematicity-induced pairing anisotropy and orbital-selective pairing, the kz-anisotropy requires additional refinement of theoretical approaches.

Spectroscopic evidence of topological phase transition in 3D Dirac semimetal Cd$_3$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$

We study the low-energy electronic structure of three-dimensional Dirac semimetal, Cd$_3$(As$_{1-x}$P$_x$)$_2$ [$x$ = 0 and 0.34(3)], by employing the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). We observe that the bulk Dirac states in Cd$_3$(As$_{0.66}$P$_{0.34}$)$_2$ are gapped out with an energy of 0.23 eV, contrary to the parent Cd$_3$As$_2$ in which the gapless Dirac states have been observed. Thus, our results confirm the earlier predicted topological phase transition in Cd$_3$As$_2$ with perturbation. We further notice that the critical P substitution concentration, at which the two Dirac points that are spread along the $c$-axis in Cd$_3$As$_2$ form a single Dirac point at $Γ$, is much lower [x$_c$(P)$<$ 0.34(3)] than the predicted value of x$_c$(P)=0.9. Therefore, our results suggest that the nontrivial band topology of Cd$_3$As$_2$ is remarkably sensitive to the P substitution and can only survive over a narrow substitution range, i.e., 0 $\leq$ x (P) $<$ 0.34(3).

Observation of Dirac surface states in the hexagonal PtBi2, a possible origin of the linear magnetoresistance

The nonmagnetic compounds showing extremely large magnetoresistance are attracting a great deal of research interests due to their potential applications in the field of spintronics. PtBi$_2$ is one of such interesting compounds showing large linear magnetoresistance (MR) in its both the hexagonal and pyrite crystal structure. We use angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations to understand the mechanism of liner MR observed in the hexagonal PtBi$_2$. Our results uncover for the first time linear dispersive surface Dirac states at the $\barΓ$-point, crossing Fermi level with node at a binding energy of $\approx$ 900 meV, in addition to the previously reported Dirac states at the $\bar{M}$-point in the same compound. We further notice from our dichroic measurements that these surface states show an asymmetric spectral intensity when measured with left and right circularly polarized light, hinting at a substantial spin polarization of the bands. Following these observations, we suggest that the linear dispersive Dirac states at the $\barΓ$ and $\bar{M}$-points are likely to play a crucial role for the linear field dependent magnetoresistance recorded in this compound.

Ferro-lattice-distortions and charge fluctuations in superconducting LaO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$BiS$_{2}$

Competing ferroelectric and charge density wave phases have been proposed to be present in the electron-phonon coupled LaO$_{1-x}$F$_{x}$BiS$_{2}$ superconductor. The lattice instability arises from unstable phonon modes that can break the crystal symmetry. Upon examination of the crystal structure using single crystal diffraction, we find a superlattice pattern arising from coherent in-plane displacements of the sulfur atoms in the BiS$_{2}$ superconducting planes. The distortions morph into coordinated ferro-distortive patterns, challenging previous symmetry suggestions including the possible presence of unstable antiferro-distortive patterns. The ferro-distortive pattern remains in the superconducting state, but with the displacements diminished in magnitude. Moreover, the sulfur displacements can exist in several polytypes stacked along the c-axis. Charge carriers can get trapped in the lattice deformations reducing the effective number of carriers available for pairing.
