Mapping of surface local elastic constant using Atomic Force Acoustic Microscopy

We report a systematic study to determine local elastic properties of surfaces combining atomic force microscope (AFM) with acoustic waves which is known as atomic force acoustic microscopy - AFAM. We describe the methodology of AFAM in detail and interpret the measurement using simple arguments and other complementary measurements using AFM.We have used a few selected samples to elucidate the capability of the AFAM technique to map the local elastic constant of the sample surface. Using the force-distance measurement and the change in the frequency of resonance peak at various regions we quantitatively determine the change in the local stiffness (elastic constant) of the sample surface. We have also shown that AFAM technique can be used to get a better surface image contrast where contact mode AFM fails.

Role of surface roughness in hard x-ray emission from femtosecond laser produced copper plasmas

The hard x-ray emission in the energy range of 30-300 keV from copper plasmas produced by 100 fs, 806 nm laser pulses at intensities in the range of 10$^{15}-10^{16}$ W cm$^{-2}$ is investigated. We demonstrate that surface roughness of the targets overrides the role of polarization state in the coupling of light to the plasma. We further show that surface roughness has a significant role in enhancing the x-ray emission in the above mentioned energy range.

Growth kinetic study of sputter deposition: Ag on Si/SiO$_2$

We have presented the kinetic study of the very initial growth stages of an ultra thin film (40 $Å$- 150$Å$) of Ag sputter-deposited on Si(001) substrate containing native oxide using grazing incidence x-ray reflectivity (GIXR) technique and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). We observe that the film consists of mounds with the presence of voids. The thickness `d_{xray}' and the packing fraction `η' of the film as a function of time `t' follow a simple power law, d_{xray} $\thicksim t^{m} and η\thicksim $t^{n}$ with the exponent m = 0.58 and n = 0.37 respectively. We have quantitatively determined that the voids between the mounds decrease at the initial growth stages with the increase in mound size using GIXR measurement. The mound size increases mainly by the coalescence process on the substrate. We have observed that as a function of time the mound size R(t) increases radially as $\thicksim $t^{z}. The radial growth exponent z crosses over from z > 0.5 to z $\thicksim $ 0.25 indicating two growth regimes. The GIXR measurement reveals sublinear dependence of ηon d and the AFM measurement shows a cross over of the radial growth exponent, both these indicates that the lateral growth of the mound is enhanced initially reducing the voids.

Shapes and textures of ferromagnetic liquid droplets

Theoretical calculations, computer simulations and experiments indicate the possible existence of a ferromagnetic liquid state. Should such a state exist, demagnetization effects would force a nontrivial magnetization texture governed by the shape of the liquid droplet. Since liquid droplets are deformable, the droplet shape couples to the magnetization texture. This paper solves the joint shape/texture problem subject to the assumption of cylindrical droplet symmetry. The shape undergoes a change in topology from spherical to toroidal as exchange energy grows or surface tension decreases.

Some Comments On Bound State Eigenvalues of PT-Symmetric Potentials

Using purely physical arguments it is claimed that for ID Schrodinger operators with complex PT- Symmatric potentials having a purely real attractive potential well and a purely imaginary repulsive part, bound state eigenvalues will be discrete and real. This has been illustrated with several potentials possessing similar properties.

Thermodynamic Limit for Polydisperse Fluids

We examine the thermodynamic limit of fluids of hard core particles that are polydisperse in size and shape. In addition, particles may interact magnetically. Free energy of such systems is a random variable because it depends on the choice of particles. We prove that the thermodynamic limit exists with probability 1, and is independent of the choice of particles. Our proof applies to polydisperse hard-sphere fluids, colloids and ferrofluids. The existence of a thermodynamic limit implies system shape and size independence of thermodynamic properties of a system.

Thermodynamic Limit for Dipolar Media

We prove existence of a shape and boundary condition independent thermodynamic limit for fluids and solids of identical particles with electric or magnetic dipole moments. Our result applies to fluids of hard core particles, to dipolar soft spheres and Stockmayer fluids, to disordered solid composites, and to regular crystal lattices. In addition to their permanent dipole moments, particles may further polarize each other. Classical and quantum models are treated. Shape independence depends on the reduction in free energy accomplished by domain formation, so our proof applies only in the case of zero applied field. Existence of a thermodynamic limit implies texture formation in spontaneously magnetized liquids and disordered solids analogous to domain formation in crystalline solids.

Studies of the Response of the Prototype CMS Hadron Calorimeter, Including Magnetic Field Effects, to Pion, Electron, and Muon Beams

We report on the response of a prototype CMS hadron calorimeter module to charged particle beams of pions, muons, and electrons with momenta up to 375 GeV/c. The data were taken at the H2 and H4 beamlines at CERN in 1995 and 1996. The prototype sampling calorimeter used copper absorber plates and scintillator tiles with wavelength shifting fibers for readout. The effects of a magnetic field of up to 3 Tesla on the response of the calorimeter to muons, electrons, and pions are presented, and the effects of an upstream lead tungstate crystal electromagnetic calorimeter on the linearity and energy resolution of the combined calorimetric system to hadrons are evaluated. The results are compared with Monte Carlo simulations and are used to optimize the choice of total absorber depth, sampling frequency, and longitudinal readout segmentation.

The propensity of molecules to spatially align in intense light fields

The propensity of molecules to spatially align along the polarization vector of intense, pulsed light fields is related to readily-accessible parameters (molecular polarizabilities, moment of inertia, peak intensity of the light and its pulse duration). Predictions can now be made of which molecules can be spatially aligned, and under what circumstances, upon irradiation by intense light. Accounting for both enhanced ionization and hyperpolarizability, it is shown that {\it all} molecules can be aligned, even those with the smallest static polarizability, when subjected to the shortest available laser pulses (of sufficient intensity).

Searching for R-Parity Violation at Run-II of the Tevatron

We present an outlook for possible discovery of supersymmetry with broken R-parity at Run II of the Tevatron. We first present a review of the literature and an update of the experimental bounds. In turn we then discuss the following processes: 1. Resonant slepton production followed by R-parity violating decay, (a) via $LQD^c$ and (b) via $LLE^c$. 2. How to distinguish resonant slepton production from $Z'$ or $W'$ production. 3. Resonant slepton production followed by the decay to neutralino LSP, which decays via $LQD^c$. 4. Resonant stop production followed by the decay to a chargino, which cascades to the neutralino LSP. 5. Gluino pair production followed by the cascade decay to charm squarks which decay directly via $L_1Q_2D^c_1$. 6. Squark pair production followed by the cascade decay to the neutralino LSP which decays via $L_1Q_2D^c_1$. 7. MSSM pair production followed by the cascade decay to the LSP which decays (a) via $LLE^c$, (b) via $LQD^c$, and (c) via $U^cD^cD^c$, respectively. 8. Top quark and top squark decays in spontaneous R-parity violation.

Ferromagnetic Liquid Thin Films Under Applied Field

Theoretical calculations, computer simulations and experiments indicate the possible existence of a ferromagnetic liquid state, although definitive experimental evidence is lacking. Should such a state exist, demagnetization effects would force a nontrivial magnetization texture. Since liquid droplets are deformable, the droplet shape is coupled with the magnetization texture. In a thin-film geometry in zero applied field, the droplet has a circular shape and a rotating magnetization texture with a point vortex at the center. We calculate the elongation and magnetization texture of such ferromagnetic thin film liquid droplet confined between two parallel plates under a weak applied magnetic field. The vortex stretches into a domain wall and exchange forces break the reflection symmetry. This behavior contrasts qualitatively and quantitatively with the elongation of paramagnetic thin films.

Dynamic and geometric alignment of CS_2 in intense laser fields of picosecond and femtosecond duration

CS$_2$ is identified as a molecule for which distinction can be made between dynamic and geometric alignment induced by intense laser fields. Measured anisotropic angular distributions of fragment ions arise from (i) dynamic alignment of the S-C-S axes along the laser polarization vector for 35-ps laser pulses and (ii) geometric alignment due to an angle-dependent ionization rate in the case of 100-fs pulses. Results of classical calculations of the alignment dynamics support our observations. By comparing mass spectra obtained with linearly- and circularly-polarized light it is not possible to distinguish between dynamic and geometric alignment. 33.80.Rv, 33.90.+h, 42.50.Vk

Search for R-parity Violating SUSY in Run 2 at D0

We present a study of sensitivity of the R-parity violating SUSY searches with the upgraded D0 detector in Run II of the Fermilab Tevatron, within a SUGRA framework. We considered the lightest neutralino as an LSP that decays into a lepton and slepton (R-parity violating decay), resulting in 2e + \ge 4 jets or 2μ+ \ge 4 jets final state. The analysis, based on scaling of the Run I results, shows that squarks and gluinos with masses up to about 0.6 TeV could be probed with 2 fb^-1 of Run II data. This work has been done in the context of the BTMSSM Working Group of the Run II SUSY/Higgs Workshop at Fermilab.

Elongation of confined ferrofluid droplets under applied fields

Ferrofluids are strongly paramagnetic liquids. We study the behavior of ferrofluid droplets confined between two parallel plates with a weak applied field parallel to the plates. The droplets elongate under the applied field to reduce their demagnetizing energy and reach an equilibrium shape where the magnetic forces balance against the surface tension. This elongation varies logarithmically with aspect ratio of droplet thickness to its original radius, in contrast to the behavior of unconfined droplets. Experimental studies of a ferrofluid/water/surfactant emulsion confirm this prediction.

Determination of the mass of the W boson

Previous studies of the physics potential of LEP2 indicated that with the design luminosity of 500 inverse picobarn one may get a direct measurement of the mass of the W-boson with a precision in the range 30 - 50 MeV. This report presents an updated evaluation of the estimated error on the mass of the W-boson based on recent simulation work and improved theoretical input. The most efficient experimental methods which will be used are also described.

Asymmetries between the production of D+ and D- mesons from 500 GeV/c pi- nucleon interactions as a function of xF and pt**2

We present asymmetries between the production of D+ and D- mesons in Fermilab experiment E791 as a function of xF and pt**2. The data used here consist of 74,000 fully-reconstructed charmed mesons produced by a 500 GeV/c pi- beam on C and Pt foils. The measurements are compared to results of models which predict differences between the production of heavy-quark mesons that have a light quark in common with the beam (leading particles) and those that do not (non-leading particles). While the default models do not agree with our data, we can reach agreement with one of them, PYTHIA, by making a limited number of changes to parameters used.
