Effect of self-affine fractal characteristics of surfaces on wetting

The relation between the contact angle of a liquid drop and the morphological parameters of self-affine solid surfaces have been investigated. We show experimentally that the wetting property of a solid surface crucially depends on the surface morphological parameters such as: (1) root mean square (rms) roughness $σ$, (2) in-plane roughness correlation length $ξ$ and (3) roughness exponent $α$ of the self-affine surface. We have shown that the contact angle monotonically decreases with the increase in the rms local surface slope $ρ$ ($\propto σ/ξ^α$) for the cases where the liquid wets the crevices of the surface upon contact. We have shown that the same solid surface can be made hydrophobic or hydrophilic by merely tuning these self-affine surface morphological parameters.

Magnetocaloric properties of nanocrystalline La$_{0.125}$Ca$_{0.875}$MnO$_{3}$

Some recent experimental studies show the invisibility of antiferromagnetic transition in the cases of manganites when their particle size is reduced to nanometer scale. In complete contrast to these cases, we have observed the signature of antiferromagnetic transition in the magnetocaloric properties of nanocrystalline La$_{0.125}$Ca$_{0.875}$MnO$_{3}$ of average particle size 70 and 60 nm similar to its polycrystalline bulk form. The system exhibit inverse magnetocaloric effect in its polycrystalline and nanocrystalline form. An extra ferromagnetic phase is stabilized at low temperature for the sample with particle size $\sim 60$ nm.

Tight-binding modeling and low-energy behavior of the semi-Dirac point

We develop a tight-binding model description of semi-Dirac electronic spectra, with highly anisotropic dispersion around point Fermi surfaces, recently discovered in electronic structure calculations of VO$_2$/TiO$_2$ nano-heterostructures. We contrast their spectral properties with the well known Dirac points on the honeycomb lattice relevant to graphene layers and the spectra of bands touching each other in zero-gap semiconductors. We also consider the lowest order dispersion around one of the semi-Dirac points and calculate the resulting electronic energy levels in an external magnetic field. We find that these systems support apparently similar electronic structures but diverse low-energy physics.

Status of the Hadronic tau Decay Determination of |V_{us}|

We update the hadronic tau determination of |V_{us}|, showing that current strange branching fractions produce results 2-3 sigma lower than 3-family unitarity expectations. Issues related to the size of theoretical uncertainties and results from an alternate, mixed tau-electroproduction sum rule determination (which, by construction, produces a much smaller theoretical uncertainty), are also considered.

Proceedings of SuperB Workshop VI: New Physics at the Super Flavor Factory

The sixth SuperB Workshop was convened in response to questions posed by the INFN Review Committee, evaluating the SuperB project at the request of INFN. The working groups addressed the capability of a high-luminosity flavor factory that can gather a data sample of 50 to 75 /ab in five years to elucidate New Physics phenomena unearthed at the LHC. This report summarizes the results of the Workshop.

Simple derivation of Young, Wenzel and Cassie-Baxter equations and its interpretations

In this paper we have derived Young's, Wenzel's and Cassie-Baxter's equations using conceptual model rather than showing rigorous derivation to help the new-comers in this field. We then pointed out that if the substrate is initially hydorphilic then one can modify the surface morphology and make the substrate to become hydrophobic or superhydrophobic. But, if the substrate is initially hydrophobic then one can only make it superhydrophobic but not hydrophilic by modifying the surface morphology using the formalisms mentioned in this paper

Status of the Hadronic Tau Determination of V_us

We update the extraction of |V_{us}| from hadronic tau decay data in light of recent BaBar and Belle results on the branching fractions of a number of important strange decay modes. A range of sum rule analyses is performed, particular attention being paid to those based on "non-spectral weights", developed previously to bring the slow convergence of the relevant integrated D=2 OPE series under improved control. Results from the various sum rules are shown to be in good agreement with one another, but ~3 sigma below expectations based on 3-family unitarity. Important avenues for future study are briefly discussed.

Change in the room temperature magnetic property of ZnO upon Mn doping

We present in this paper the changes in the room temperature magnetic property of ZnO on Mn doping prepared using solvo-thermal process. The zero field cooled (ZFC) and field cooled (FC) magnetisation of undoped ZnO showed bifurcation and magnetic hysteresis at room temperature. Upon Mn doping the magnetic hysteresis at room temperature and the bifurcation in ZFC-FC magnetization vanishes. The results seem to indicate that undoped ZnO is ferromagnetic while on the other hand the Mn doped ZnO is not a ferromagnetic system. We observe that on addition of Mn atoms the system shows antiferromagnetism with very giant magnetic moments.

Flavour physics of leptons and dipole moments

This chapter of the report of the ``Flavour in the era of the LHC'' Workshop discusses the theoretical, phenomenological and experimental issues related to flavour phenomena in the charged lepton sector and in flavour-conserving CP-violating processes. We review the current experimental limits and the main theoretical models for the flavour structure of fundamental particles. We analyze the phenomenological consequences of the available data, setting constraints on explicit models beyond the Standard Model, presenting benchmarks for the discovery potential of forthcoming measurements both at the LHC and at low energy, and exploring options for possible future experiments.

Influence of Mn doping on the microstructure and optical property of ZnO

Undoped and Mn doped ZnO samples with different percentage of Mn content (1 mol%, 2 mol% and 3mol%) were synthesized by a simple solvo-thermal method. We have studied the structural, chemical and optical properties of the samples by using x-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive x-ray (EDX) analysis, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and UV-VIS spectroscopy. The XRD spectra show that all the samples are hexagonal wurtzite structures. The lattice parameters calculated for the Mn doped ZnO from the XRD pattern were found to be slightly larger than those of the undoped ZnO, which indicates substitution of Mn in ZnO lattice. SEM photograph shows the grain size of undoped ZnO is bigger than the Mn doped ZnO indicating hindrance of grain growth upon Mn doping. As the Mn doping increases the optical band gap decreases for the range of Mn doping reported here.

Enhancement of ferromagnetism upon thermal annealing in pure ZnO

We report here enhancement of ferromagnetism in pure ZnO upon thermal annealing with the ferromagnetic transition temperature Tc above room temperature. We observe a finite coercive field upto 300K and a finite thermoremanent magnetization upto 340K for the annealed sample. We propose that magnetic moments can form at anionic vacancy clusters. Ferromagnetism can occur due to either superexchange between vacancy clusters via isolated F+ centers, or through a limited electron delocalization between vacancy clusters. Isolated vacancy clusters or isolated F+ centers give rise to a strong paramagnetic like behaviour below 10K.

Collisional Hardening of Compact Binaries in Globular Clusters

We consider essential mechanisms for orbit-shrinkage or "hardening" of compact binaries in globular clusters to the point of Roche-lobe contact and X-ray emission phase, focussing on the process of collisional hardening due to encounters between binaries and single stars in the cluster core. The interplay between this kind of hardening and that due to emission of gravitational radiation produces a characteristic scaling of the orbit-shrinkage time with the single-star binary encounter rate $γ$ in the cluster which we introduce, clarify, and explore. We investigate possible effects of this scaling on populations of X-ray binaries in globular clusters within the framework of a simple "toy" scheme for describing the evolution of pre-X-ray binaries in globular clusters. We find the expected qualitative trends sufficiently supported by data on X-ray binaries in galactic globular clusters to encourage us toward a more quantitative study.

Properties of proton in diquark model

The properties of the proton has been investigated considering a proton as diquark-quark system. A model for diquark has been suggested in an analogy with the quasi-particle in a crystal lattice. The mass of the diquark obtained in the present model has been found to be in good agreement with other theoretical predictions. The binding energy of proton, compressibility and excitation energy for the Roper Resonance have also been estimated in the present model and are found to be in agreement with the existing theoretical and experimental findings.

A Study on the structure of proton

The structure function of the proton has been investigated and has been found to possess the power law behaviour in conformity with the empirical fits to the experimental findings. We have estimated F$_{2}$(x, Q$^{2}$)/F$_{2}$(x, Q$_{0}$$^{2}$) with the anomalous dimension D$_{A}$ predicted from the statistical model as an input and the result is found to be in good agreement with the recent data available in the deep inelastic region.

Detecting onset of chain scission and crosslinking of gamma-ray irradiated elastomer surfaces using frictional force microscopy

We report here that atomic force microscope (AFM) in frictional force mode can be used to detect onset of chain scission and crosslinking in polymeric and macromolecular samples upon irradiation. A systematic investigation to detect chain scission and crosslinking of two elastomers: (1) Ethylene-propylene-diene monomer rubber (EPDM) and (2) Fluorocarbon rubber (FKM) upon gamma-ray irradiation has been carried out using frictional force microscopy (FFM). From the AFM results we observed that both the elastomers show a systematic smoothening of its surfaces, as the gamma-ray dose rate increases. However, the frictional property studied using FFM of the sample surfaces show an initial increase and then a decrease as a function of dose rate. This behavior of increase in its frictional property has been attributed to the onset of chain scission and the subsequent decrease in friction has been attributed to the onset of crosslinking of the polymer chains. The evaluated qualitative and semi-quantitative changes observed in the overall frictional property as a function of gamma-ray dose rate for the two elastomers are presented in this paper.

Conductivity landscape of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite surface containing ribbons and edges

We present an extensive study on electrical spectroscopy of graphene ribbons and edges of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) using atomic force microscope (AFM). We have addressed in the present study two main issues, (1) How does the electrical property of the graphite (graphene) sheet change when the graphite layer is displaced by shear forces? and (2) How does the electrical property of the graphite sheet change across a step edge? While addressing these two issues we observed, (1) variation of conductance among the graphite ribbons on the surface of HOPG. The top layer always exhibits more conductance than the lower layers, (2) two different monolayer ribbons on the same sheet of graphite shows different conductance, (3) certain ribbon/sheet edges show sharp rise in current, (4) certain ribbons/sheets on the same edge shows both presence and absense of the sharp rise in the current, (5) some lower layers at the interface near a step edge shows a strange dip in the current/conductance (depletion of charge). We discuss possible reasons for such rich conducting landscape on the surface of graphite.

Bias voltage controlled magnetization switch in ferromagnetic semiconductor resonant tunneling diodes

We predict that the Curie temperature of a ferromagnetic resonant tunneling diode will decrease abruptly, by approximately a factor of two, when the downstream chemical potential falls below the quantum well resonance energy. This property follows from elementary quantum transport theory notions combined with a mean field description of diluted magnetic semiconductor ferromagnetism. We illustrate this effect by solving coupled non-equilibrium Green's function, magnetic mean-field, and electrostatic Poisson equations self-consistently to predict the bias voltage and temperature dependence of the magnetization of a model system.
