Structure of the flux lines lattice in NbSe2: Equilibrium state and influence of the magnetic history

We have performed small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) of the flux line lattice (FLL) in a Fe doped NbSe_2 sample which presents a large peak effect in the critical current. The scattered intensity and the width of the Bragg peaks of the equilibrium FLL indicate an ordered structure in the peak effect zone. The history dependence in the FLL structure has been studied using field cooled and zero field cooled procedures, and each state shows the same intensity of Bragg scattering and good orientational order. These results strongly suggest that the peak effect is unrelated to a bulk disordering transition, and confirm the role of a heterogeneous distribution of screening current.

Forced-induced desorption of a polymer chain adsorbed on an attractive surface - Theory and Computer Experiment

We consider the properties of a self-avoiding polymer chain, adsorbed on a solid attractive substrate which is attached with one end to a pulling force. The conformational properties of such chain and its phase behavior are treated within a Grand Canonical Ensemble (GCE) approach. We derive theoretical expressions for the mean size of loops, trains, and tails of an adsorbed chain under pulling as well as values for the universal exponents which describe their probability distribution functions. A central result of the theoretical analysis is the derivation of an expression for the crossover exponent $ϕ$, characterizing polymer adsorption at criticality, $ϕ= α-1$, which relates the precise value of $ϕ$ to the exponent $α$, describing polymer loop statistics. We demonstrate that $1-γ_{11} < α< 1 + ν$, depending on the possibility of a single loop to interact with neighboring loops in the adsorbed polymer. The universal surface loop exponent $γ_{11} \approx -0.39$ and the Flory exponent $ν\approx 0.59$. We present the adsorption-desorption phase diagram of a polymer chain under pulling and demonstrate that the relevant phase transformation becomes first order whereas in the absence of external force it is known to be a continuous one. The nature of this transformation turns to be dichotomic, i.e., coexistence of different phase states is not possible. These novel theoretical predictions are verified by means of extensive Monte Carlo simulations.

Polymer desorption under pulling: a novel dichotomic phase transition

We show that the structural properties and phase behavior of a self-avoiding polymer chain on adhesive substrate, subject to pulling at the chain end, can be obtained by means of a Grand Canonical Ensemble (GCE) approach. We derive analytical expressions for the mean length of the basic structural units of adsorbed polymer, such as loops and tails, in terms of the adhesive potential and detachment force, and determine values of the universal exponents which govern their probability distributions. Most notably, the hitherto controversial value of the critical adsorption exponent $ϕ$ is found to depend essentially on the interaction between different loops. The chain detachment transition turns out to be of the first order, albeit dichotomic, i.e., no coexistence of different phase states exists. These novel theoretical predictions and the suggested phase diagram of the adsorption-desorption transformation under external pulling force are verified by means of extensive Monte Carlo simulations.

Light charged particle emission from hot $^{32}$S$^{*}$ formed in $^{20}$Ne + $^{12}$C reaction

Inclusive energy distributions for light charged particles ($p, d, t$ and $α$) have been measured in the $^{20}$Ne (158, 170, 180, 200 MeV) + $^{12}$C reactions in the angular range 10$^{o}$ -- 50$^{o}$. Exclusive light charged particle energy distribution measurements were also done for the same system at 158 MeV bombarding energy by in-plane light charged particle -- fragment coincidence. Pre-equilibrium components have been separated out from proton energy spectra using moving source model considering two sources. The data have been compared with the predictions of the statistical model code CASCADE. It has been observed that significant deformation effects were needed to be introduced in the compound nucleus in order to explain the shape of the evaporated $d, t$ energy spectra. For protons, evaporated energy spectra were rather insensitive to nuclear deformation, though angular distributions could not be explained without deformation. Decay sequence of the hot $^{32}$S nucleus has been investigated through exclusive light charged particle measurements using the $^{20}$Ne (158 MeV) + $^{12}$C reaction. Information on the sequential decay chain has been extracted through comparison of the experimental data with the predictions of the statistical model. It is observed from the present analysis that exclusive light charged particle data may be used as a powerful tool to probe the decay sequence of hot light compound systems.

Sharp change over from compound nuclear fission to shape dependent quasi fission

Fission fragment mass distribution has been measured from the decay of $^{246}$Bk nucleus populating via two entrance channels with slight difference in mass asymmetries but belonging on either side of the Businaro Gallone mass asymmetry parameter. Both the target nuclei were deformed. Near the Coulomb barrier, at similar excitation energies the width of the fission fragment mass distribution was found to be drastically different for the $^{14}$N + $^{232}$Th reaction compared to the $^{11}$B + $^{235}$U reaction. The entrance channel mass asymmetry was found to affect the fusion process sharply.

Adsorption Kinetics of a Single Polymer on a Solid Plane

We study analytically and by means of an off-lattice bead-spring dynamic Monte Carlo simulation model the adsorption kinetics of a single macromolecule on a structureless flat substrate in the regime of strong physisorption. The underlying notion of a ``stem-flower'' polymer conformation, and the related mechanism of ``zipping'' during the adsorption process are shown to lead to a Fokker-Planck equation with reflecting boundary conditions for the time-dependent probability distribution function (PDF) of the number of adsorbed monomers. The theoretical treatment predicts that the mean fraction of adsorbed segments grows with time as a power law with a power of $(1+ν)^{-1}$ where $ν\approx 3/5$ is the Flory exponent. The instantaneous distribution of train lengths is predicted to follow an exponential relationship. The corresponding PDFs for loops and tails are also derived. The complete solution for the time-dependent PDF of the number of adsorbed monomers is obtained numerically from the set of discrete coupled differential equations and shown to be in perfect agreement with the Monte Carlo simulation results. In addition to homopolymer adsorption, we study also regular multiblock copolymers and random copolymers, and demonstrate that their adsorption kinetics may be considered within the same theoretical model.

Development of bakelite based Resistive Plate Chambers

A Comparative study has been performed on Resistive Plate Chambers made of different grades of bakelite paper laminates, produced and commercially available in India. The chambers, operated in the streamer mode using argon : tetrafluroethane : isobutane in 34:59:7 mixing ratio, are tested with cosmic rays for the efficiency and the stability with cosmic rays. A particular grade of bakelite (P-120, NEMA LI-1989 Grade XXX), used for high voltage insulation in humid conditions, was found to give satisfactory performance with stable efficiency of > 96% continuously for more than 110 days. A silicone treatment of the inner surfaces of the bakelite RPC is found to be necessary for operation of the detector.

Effect of small particles on the near-wall dynamics of a large particle in a highly bidisperse colloidal solution

We consider the hydrodynamic effect of small particles on the dynamics of a much larger particle moving normal to a planar wall in a highly bidisperse dilute colloidal suspension of spheres. The gap $h_0$ between the large particle and the wall is assumed to be comparable to the diameter $2a$ of the smaller particles so there is a length-scale separation between the gap width $h_0$ and the radius of the large particle $b<<h_0$. We use this length-scale separation to develop a new lubrication theory which takes into account the presence of the smaller particles in the space between the larger particle and the wall. The hydrodynamic effect of the small particles on the motion of the large particle is characterized by the short time (or high frequency) resistance coefficient. We find that for small particle-wall separations $h_0$, the resistance coefficient tends to the asymptotic value corresponding to the large particle moving in a clear suspending fluid. For $h_0<<a$, the resistance coefficient approaches the lubrication value corresponding to a particle moving in a fluid with the effective viscosity given by the Einstein formula.

Giant Dipole Resonance Width in near-Sn Nuclei at Low Temperature and High Angular Momentum

High energy gamma-rays in coincidence with low energy yrast gamma-rays have been measured from 113Sb, at excitation energies of 109 and 122 MeV, formed by bombarding 20Ne on 93Nb at projectile energies of 145 and 160 MeV respectively to study the role of angular momentum (J) and temperature (T) over Giant Dipole Resonance (GDR) width. The maximum populated angular momenta for fusion were 67hbar and 73hbar respectively for the above-mentioned beam energies. The high energy photons were detected using a Large Area Modular BaF2 Detector Array (LAMBDA) along with a 24-element multiplicity filter. After pre-equilibrium corrections, the excitation energy E* was averaged over the decay steps of the compound nucleus (CN). The average values of temperature, angular momentum, CN mass etc. have been calculated by the statistical model code CASCADE. Using those average values, results show the systematic increase of GDR width with T which is consistent with Kusnezov parametrization and the Thermal Shape Fluctuation Model. The rise of GDR width with temperature also supports the assumptions of adiabatic coupling in the Thermal Shape Fluctuation Model. But the GDR widths and corresponding reduced plots with J are not consistent with the theoretical model at high spins.

Study of Direct Photon plus Jet production in CMS Experiment at \sqrt{s}=14 TeV

We present simulation results of $γ$ + Jet analysis using CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) Object-Oriented software at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) center of mass energy $\sqrt{s}$=14 TeV. The study of direct photon production helps in validating the perturbative Quantum Chromodynamics (pQCD) and providing information on the gluon distribution in the nucleons. Direct photon processes also constitute a major background to several other Standard Model (SM) processes and signals of new physics. Thus these processes need to be understood precisely in the new energy regime. In this work, we have done a detailed study of the GEANT4 simulated $γ$ + jet events generated with Pythia, and the related background processes. Isolation cuts have been optimized for direct photon which improves the signal over background ratio by $\sim25%$ as compared to previous studies done in CMS. The inclusion of a large $Δϕ$ cut between the photon and the leading jet at $40^0$ in the analysis leads to a further increase of $\sim15%$ in S/B, thus giving an overall gain of $\sim42%$ in S/B ratio.

LAMBDA: Large Area Modular BaF2 Detector Array for the measurement of high energy gamma rays

A large BaF2 detector array along with its dedicated CAMAC electronics and VME based data acquisition system has been designed, constructed and installed successfully at VECC, Kolkata for studying high energy gamma rays (E>8 MeV). The array consists of 162 detector elements. The detectors were fabricated from bare barium fluoride crystals (each measuring 35 cm in length and having cross-sectional area of 3.5 cm X 3.5 cm X 35.0 cm). The basic properties of the detectors (energy resolution, time resolution, efficiency, uniformity, fast to slow ratio etc.) were studied exhaustively. Complete GEANT3 monte carlo simulations were performed to optimize the detector design and also to generate the response function. The detector system has been used successfully to measure high energy photons from 113Sb, formed by bombarding 145 and 160 MeV 20Ne beams on a 93Nb target. The measured experimental spectra are in good agreement with those from a modified version of the statistical model code CASCADE. In this paper, we present the complete description of this detector array along with its in-beam performance.

Characterization of fragment emission in ^{20}Ne (7 - 10 MeV/nucleon) + ^{12}C reactions

The inclusive energy distributions of the complex fragments (3 $\leq$ Z $\leq$ 7) emitted from the bombardment of ^{12}C by ^{20}Ne beams with incident energies between 145 and 200 MeV have been measured in the angular range 10$^{o} \leq θ_{lab} \leq$ 50^{o}. Damped fragment yields in all the cases have been found to be the characteristic of emission from fully energy equilibrated composites. The binary fragment yields are compared with the standard statistical model predictions. Enhanced yields of entrance channel fragments (5 $\leq$ Z $\leq$ 7) indicate the survival of orbiting-like process in ^{20}Ne + ^{12}C system at these energies.

Scanning probe imaging of coexistent ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity at room temperature

Room temperature coexistence of ferromagnetism and ferroelectricity in a thin film of a novel material of nominal composition PbTi0.5Fe0.5O3-d is probed by standard ferroelectric and ferromagnetic hysteresis loop measurements and by scanning probe microscopy of various kinds. Both magnetic domains and ferroelectric domains are observed in the same spatial region of the material, implying phase coexistence in this system. For both order parameters, sample morphology strongly affects roughness of the domain walls.

Study of Dissipative Collisions of $^{20}$Ne ($\sim$7-11 MeV/nucleon) + $^{27}$Al

The inclusive energy distributions of complex fragments (3 $\leq$Z $\leq$ 9) emitted in the reactions $^{20}$Ne (145, 158, 200, 218 MeV) + $^{27}$Al have been measured in the angular range 10$^{o}$ - 50$^{o}$. The fusion-fission and the deep-inelastic components of the fragment yield have been extracted using multiple Gaussian functions from the experimental fragment energy spectra. The elemental yields of the fusion-fission component have been found to be fairly well exlained in the framework of standard statistical model. It is found that there is strong competition between the fusion-fission and the deep-inelastic processes at these energies. The time scale of the deep-inelastic process was estimated to be typically in the range of $\sim$ 10$^{-21}$ - 10$^{-22}$ sec., and it was found to decrease with increasing fragment mass. The angular momentum dissipations in fully energy damped deep-inelastic process have been estimated from the average energies of the deep-inelastic components of the fragment energy spectra. It has been found that, the estimated angular momentum dissipations, for lighter fragments in particular, are more than those predicted by the empirical sticking limit.

Evidence of large nuclear deformation of $^{32}$S$^{*}$ formed in $^{20}$Ne + $^{12}$C reaction

Deformations of hot composite $^{32}$S$^{*}$ formed in the reaction $^{20}$Ne ($\sim$ 7 -- 10 MeV/nucleon) + $^{12}$C have been estimated from the respective inclusive $α$-particle evaporation spectra. The estimated deformations for $^{32}$S$^{*}$ have been found to be much larger than the `normal' deformations of hot, rotating composites at similar excitations. This further confirms the formation of highly deformed long-lived configuration of $^{20}$Ne + $^{12}$C at high excitations ($\sim$ 70 -- 100 MeV) -- which was recently indicated from the analysis of the complex fragment emission data for the same system. Exclusive $α$-particle evaporation spectra from the decay of hot composite $^{32}$S$^{*}$ also show similar behaviour.

Motion of a sphere in an oscillatory boundary layer: an optical tweezer based study

The drag forces acting on a single polystyrene sphere in the vicinity of an oscillating glass plate have been measured using an optical tweezer. The phase of the sphere is found to be a sensitive probe of the dynamics of the sphere. The evolution of the phase from an inertially-coupled regime to a purely velocity-coupled regime is explored. Moreover, the frequency dependent response is found to be characteristic of a damped oscillator with an effective inertia which is several orders of magnitude greater than that of the particle.

Influence of projectile - breakup threshold on complete fusion

Complete fusion excitations for 11,10B+159Tb have been measured at energies around the respective Coulomb barriers, and the existing complete fusion measurements for 7Li+159Tb have been extended to higher energies. The measurements show significant reduction of complete fusion cross sections at above-barrier energies for both the reactions, 10B+159Tb and 7Li+159Tb, when compared to those for 11B+159Tb. The comparison shows that the extent of suppression of complete fusion cross sections is correlated with the -separation energies of the projectiles. Also, the two reactions, 10B+159Tb and 7Li+159Tb were found to produce incomplete fusion products at energies near the respective Coulomb barriers, with the - particle emitting channel being the favoured incomplete fusion process in both the cases.
