Hydrodynamic interactions of spherical particles in Poiseuille flow between two parallel walls

We study hydrodynamic interactions of spherical particles in incident Poiseuille flow in a channel with infinite planar walls. The particles are suspended in a Newtonian fluid, and creeping-flow conditions are assumed. Numerical results, obtained using our highly accurate Cartesian-representation algorithm [Physica A xxx, {\bf xx}, 2005], are presented for a single sphere, two spheres, and arrays of many spheres. We consider the motion of freely suspended particles as well as the forces and torques acting on particles adsorbed at a wall. We find that the pair hydrodynamic interactions in this wall-bounded system have a complex dependence on the lateral interparticle distance due to the combined effects of the dissipation in the gap between the particle surfaces and the backflow associated with the presence of the walls. For immobile particle pairs we have examined the crossover between several far-field asymptotic regimes corresponding to different relations between the particle separation and the distances of the particles from the walls. We have also shown that the cumulative effect of the far-field flow substantially influences the force distribution in arrays of immobile spheres. Therefore, the far-field contributions must be included in any reliable algorithm for evaluating many-particle hydrodynamic interactions in the parallel-wall geometry.

Survival of orbiting in $^{20}$Ne (7 - 10 MeV/nucleon) + $^{12}$C reactions

The inclusive energy distributions of fragments with Z $\geq$ 3 emitted from the bombardment of $^{12}$C by $^{20}$Ne beams with incident energies between 145 and 200 MeV have been measured in the angular range $θ_{lab} \sim$ 10$^\circ$ - 50$^\circ$. Damped fragment yields in all cases have been found to be characteristic of emission from fully energy equilibrated composites; for B, C fragments, average Q-values, $ $, were independent of the centre of mass emission angle ($θ_{c.m}$), and the angular distributions followed $\sim$1/sin$θ_{c.m}$ like variation, signifying long life times of the emitting di-nuclear systems. Total yields of these fragments have been found to be much larger compared to the standard statistical model predictions of the same. This may be indicative of the survival of orbiting like process in $^{12}$C + $^{20}$Ne system at these energies.

Absence of M2 Retardation in $^{35}Cl$: Evidence for Stronger Isospin-Mixing Effects in A=35 Mirror Nuclei

The lifetime of the 3163 keV, 7/2$^-$ isomeric state in $^{35}Cl$ that decays by a stretched M2 transition to the $3/2^+$ ground state, has been re-measured using the Doppler Shift Attenuation Method, by gating on the 1185 keV transition which directly feeds this state. This eliminates the uncertainties in the measurement arising from the direct feedings from the continuum. A mean life of 0.6$^{+0.5}_{-0.2}$ ps has been obtained from the present work. This is considerably smaller than the adopted value 45.3(6) ps. Implication of this major reduction in the lifetime has been pointed out.

Hydrodynamic interactions of spherical particles in suspensions confined between two planar walls

Hydrodynamic interactions in a suspension of spherical particles confined between two parallel planar walls are studied under creeping-flow conditions. The many-particle friction matrix in this system is evaluated using our novel numerical algorithm based on transformations between Cartesian and spherical representations of Stokes flow. The Cartesian representation is used to describe the interaction of the fluid with the walls and the spherical representation is used to describe the interaction with the particles. The transformations between these two representations are given in a closed form, which allows us to evaluate the coefficients in linear equations for the induced-force multipoles on particle surfaces. The friction matrix is obtained from these equations, supplemented with the superposition lubrication corrections. We have used our algorithm to evaluate the friction matrix for a single sphere, a pair of spheres, and for linear chains of spheres. The friction matrix exhibits a crossover from a quasi-two-dimensional behavior (for systems with small wall separation H) to the three-dimensional behavior (when the distance H is much larger than the interparticle distance L). The crossover is especially pronounced for a long chain moving in the direction normal to its orientation and parallel to the walls. In this configuration, a large pressure buildup occurs in front of the chain for small values of the gapwidth H, which results in a large hydrodynamic friction force. A standard wall superposition approximation does not capture this behavior.

Far-field approximation for hydrodynamic interactions in parallel-wall geometry

A complete analysis is presented for the far-field creeping flow produced by a multipolar force distribution in a fluid confined between two parallel planar walls. We show that at distances larger than several wall separations the flow field assumes the Hele-Shaw form, i.e., it is parallel to the walls and varies quadratically in the transverse direction. The associated pressure field is a two-dimensional harmonic function that is characterized by the same multipolar number m as the original force multipole. Using these results we derive asymptotic expressions for the Green's matrix that represents Stokes flow in the wall-bounded fluid in terms of a multipolar spherical basis. This Green's matrix plays a central role in our recently proposed algorithm [Physica A xx, {\bf xxx} (2005)] for evaluating many-body hydrodynamic interactions in a suspension of spherical particles in the parallel-wall geometry. Implementation of our asymptotic expressions in this algorithm increases its efficiency substantially because the numerically expensive evaluation of the exact matrix elements is needed only for the neighboring particles. Our asymptotic analysis will also be useful in developing hydrodynamic algorithms for wall-bounded periodic systems and implementing acceleration methods by using corresponding results for the two-dimensional scalar potential.

Many-particle hydrodynamic interactions in parallel-wall geometry: Cartesian-representation method

This paper describes the results of our theoretical and numerical studies of hydrodynamic interactions in a suspension of spherical particles confined between two parallel planar walls, under creeping-flow conditions. We propose a novel algorithm for accurate evaluation of the many-particle friction matrix in this system--no such algorithm has been available so far. Our approach involves expanding the fluid velocity field into spherical and Cartesian fundamental sets of Stokes flows. The interaction of the fluid with the particles is described using the spherical basis fields; the flow scattered with the walls is expressed in terms of the Cartesian fundamental solutions. At the core of our method are transformation relations between the spherical and Cartesian basis sets. These transformations allow us to describe the flow field in a system that involves both the walls and particles. We used our accurate numerical results to test the single-wall superposition approximation for the hydrodynamic friction matrix. The approximation yields fair results for quantities dominated by single particle contributions, but it fails to describe collective phenomena, such as a large transverse resistance coefficient for linear arrays of spheres.

Percolation Transition in the Heterogeneous Vortex State in NbSe2

A percolation transition in the vortex state of a superconducting 2H-NbSe2 crystal is observed in the regime where vortices form a heterogeneous phase consisting of ordered and disordered domains. The transition is signaled by a sharp increase in critical current that occurs when the volume fraction of disordered domains, obtained from pulsed measurements of the current-voltage characteristics, reaches the value Pc= 0.26. Measurements on different vortex states show that while the temperature of the transition depends on history and measurement speed, the value of Pc and the critical exponent characterizing the approach to it, r =1.97 $\pm$ 0.66, are universal.

Metastable states of a flux line lattice studied by transport and Small Angle Neutron Scattering

Flux Lines Lattice (FLL) states have been studied using transport measurements and Small Angle Neutron Scattering in low T$_c$ materials. In Pb-In, the bulk dislocations in the FLL do not influence the transport properties. In Fe doped NbSe$_{2}$, transport properties can differ after a Field Cooling (FC) or a Zero Field Cooling (ZFC) procedure, as previously reported. The ZFC FLL is found ordered with narrow Bragg Peaks and is linked to a linear V(I) curve and to a superficial critical current. The FC FLL pattern exhibits two Bragg peaks and the corresponding V(I) curve shows a S-shape. This can be explained by the coexistence of two ordered FLL slightly tilted from the applied field direction by different superficial currents. These currents are wiped out when the transport current is increased.

Magnetoelectric compounds with the general formula, Bi0.9-xRxLa0.1FeO3 (R =Gd, Tb, Dy, etc.), have been synthesized. These show the coexistence of ferroelectricity and magnetism, possess high dielectric constant and exhibit magnetoelectric coupling at room temperature. Such materials may be of great significance in basic as well as applied research.

Dissipation of angular momentum in light heavy ion collision

The inclusive energy distributions of fragments (4$\leq$Z$\leq$7) emitted in the reactions $^{16}$O (116 MeV) + $^{27}$Al, $^{28}$Si, $^{20}$Ne (145 MeV) + $^{27}$Al, $^{59}$Co have been measured in the angular range $θ_{lab} $= 10$^\circ$ - 65$^\circ$. Fusion-fission and deep inelastic components of the fragment emission have been extracted from the experimental data. The angular mometum dissipations in fully damped deep inelastic collisions have been estimated assming exit channel configuration similar to those for fusion-fission process. It has been found that, the angular momentum dissipations are more than those predicted by the empirical sticking limit in all cases. The deviation is found to increase with increasing charge transfer (lighter fragments). Qualitatively, this may be due to stronger friction in the exit channel. Moreover, for the heavier system $^{20}$Ne + $^{59}$Co, the overall magnitude of deviation is less as compared to those for the lighter systems, {\it i.e.}, $^{16}$O + $^{27}$Al, $^{28}$Si, $^{20}$Ne + $^{27}$Al. This may be due to lesser overlap in time scales of fusion and deep inelastic time scales for heavier systems.

The CMS Event Builder

The data acquisition system of the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider will employ an event builder which will combine data from about 500 data sources into full events at an aggregate throughput of 100 GByte/s. Several architectures and switch technologies have been evaluated for the DAQ Technical Design Report by measurements with test benches and by simulation. This paper describes studies of an EVB test-bench based on 64 PCs acting as data sources and data consumers and employing both Gigabit Ethernet and Myrinet technologies as the interconnect. In the case of Ethernet, protocols based on Layer-2 frames and on TCP/IP are evaluated. Results from ongoing studies, including measurements on throughput and scaling are presented. The architecture of the baseline CMS event builder will be outlined. The event builder is organised into two stages with intelligent buffers in between. The first stage contains 64 switches performing a first level of data concentration by building super-fragments from fragments of 8 data sources. The second stage combines the 64 super-fragments into full events. This architecture allows installation of the second stage of the event builder in steps, with the overall throughput scaling linearly with the number of switches in the second stage. Possible implementations of the components of the event builder are discussed and the expected performance of the full event builder is outlined.

Optimal Plant Layout Design for Process-focused Systems

In this paper we have proposed a semi-heuristic optimization algorithm for designing optimal plant layouts in process-focused manufacturing/service facilities. Being a semi-heuristic search, our algorithm is likely to be more efficient in terms of computer CPU engagement time as it tends to converge on the global optimum faster than the traditional CRAFT algorithm - a pure heuristic.

Finite entropy characterizes topological rigidity

Let X_1 and X_2 be mixing connected algebraic dynamical systems with the Descending Chain Condition. We show that every equivariant continuous map X_1 to X_2 is affine (that is, X_2 is topologically rigid) if and only if the system X_2 has finite topological entropy.

Dissipative collisions in $^{16}$O + $^{27}$Al at E$_{lab}$=116 MeV

The inclusive energy distributions of fragments (3$\leq$Z$\leq$7) emitted in the reaction $^{16}$O + $^{27}$Al at $E_{lab} = $116 MeV have been measured in the angular range $θ_{lab} $= 15$^\circ$ - 115$^\circ$. A non-linear optimisation procedure using multiple Gaussian distribution functions has been proposed to extract the fusion-fission and deep inelastic components of the fragment emission from the experimental data. The angular distributions of the fragments, thus obtained, from the deep inelastic component are found to fall off faster than those from the fusion-fission component, indicating shorter life times of the emitting di-nuclear systems. The life times of the intermediate di-nuclear configurations have been estimated using a diffractive Regge-pole model. The life times thus extracted ($\sim 1 - 5\times 10^{-22}$ Sec.) are found to decrease with the increase in the fragment charge. Optimum Q-values are also found to increase with increasing charge transfer i.e. with the decrease in fragment charge.

V-I characteristics in the vicinity of order-disorder transition in vortex matter

The shape of the V-I characteristics leading to a peak in the differential resistance r_d=dV/dI in the vicinity of the order-disorder transition in NbSe2 is investigated. r_d is large when measured by dc current. However, for a small Iac on a dc bias r_d decreases rapidly with frequency, even at a few Hz, and displays a large out-of-phase signal. In contrast, the ac response increases with frequency in the absence of dc bias. These surprisingly opposite phenomena and the peak in r_d are shown to result from a dynamic coexistence of two vortex matter phases rather than from the commonly assumed plastic depinning.

Dynamic Creation and Annihilation of Metastable Vortex Phase as a Source of Excess Noise

The large increase in voltage noise, commonly observed in the vicinity of the peak-effect in superconductors, is ascribed to a novel noise mechanism. A strongly pinned metastable disordered vortex phase, which is randomly generated at the edges and annealed into ordered phase in the bulk, causes large fluctuations in the integrated critical current of the sample. The excess noise due to this dynamic admixture of two distinct phases is found to display pronounced reentrant behavior. In the Corbino geometry the injection of the metastable phase is prevented and, accordingly, the excess noise disappears

Light charged particle evaporation from hot ${31}^$P nucleus at E$^*$ ~ 60 MeV

The energy spectra of evaporated light charged particles (LCP) $α$, p, d and t have been measured in $7^$Li(47 MeV) + ${24}^$Mg and ${19}^$F(96 MeV)+ ${12}^$C reactions. Both the systems populate the same compound nucleus ${31}^$F at excitation energy E$^*$ ~ 60 MeV. It has been observed that the light particle spectra obtained in Li + Mg reaction follow standard statistical model prediction, whereas a deformed configuration of the compound nucleus is needed to explain the LCP spectra for F + C reaction, which has been attributed to the effect of larger input angular momentum in the case of ${19}^$F(96 MeV)+ ${12}^$C system.
