Fusion of light exotic nuclei at near-barrier energies : effect of inelastic excitation

The effect of inelastic excitation of exotic light projectiles (proton- as well as neutron-rich) $^{17}$F and $^{11}$Be on fusion with heavy target has been studied at near-barrier energies. The calculations have been performed in the coupled channels approach where, in addition to the normal coupling of the ground state of the projectile to the continuum, inelastic excitation of the projectile to the bound excited state and its coupling to the continuum have also been taken into consideration. The inclusion of these additional couplings has been found to have significant effect on the fusion excitation function of neutron-rich $^{11}$Be on $^{208}$Pb whereas the effect has been observed to be nominal for the case of proton-rich $^{17}$F on the same target. The pronounced effect of the channel coupling on the fusion process in case of $^{11}$Be is attributed to its well-developed halo structure.

Fusion of light proton-rich exotic nuclei at near-barrier energies

We study theoretically fusion of the light proton-rich exotic nuclei $^{17}$F and $^8$B at near-barrier energies in order to investigate the possible role of breakup processes on their fusion cross sections. To this end, coupled channel calculations are performed considering the couplings to the breakup channels of these projectiles. In case of $^{17}$F, the coupling arising out of the inelastic excitation from the ground state to the bound excited state and its couplings to the continuum have also been taken into consideration. It is found that the inelastic excitation/breakup of $^{17}$F affect the fusion cross sections very nominally even for a heavy target like Pb. On the other hand, calculations for fusion of the one-proton halo nucleus $^8$B on a Pb target show a significant suppression of the complete fusion cross section above the Coulomb barrier. This is due to the larger breakup probability of $^8$B as compared to that of $^{17}$F. However, even for $^8$B, there is little change in the complete fusion cross sections as compared to the no-coupling case at sub-barrier energies.

Exclusive light particle measurements for the system $^{19}$F + $^{12}$C at 96 MeV

Decay sequence of hot ${31}^$P nucleus has been investigated through exclusive light charged particle measurements in coincidence with individual evaporation residues using the reaction ${19}^$F (96 MeV) + ${12}^$C. Information on the sequential decay chain have been extracted by confronting the data with the predictions of the statistical model. It is observed from the present analysis that such exclusive light charged particle data may be used as a powerful tool to probe the decay sequence of the hot light compound systems.

Critical depinning force and vortex lattice order in disordered superconductors

We simulate the ordering of vortices and its effects on the critical current in superconductors with varied vortex-vortex interaction strength and varied pinning strengths for a two-dimensional system. For strong pinning the vortex lattice is always disordered and the critical depinning force only weakly increases with decreasing vortex-vortex interactions. For weak pinning the vortex lattice is defect free until the vortex-vortex interactions have been reduced to a low value, when defects begin to appear with a simultaneous rapid increase in the critical depinning force. In each case the depinning force shows a maximum for non-interacting vortices. The relative height of the peak increases and the peak width decreases for decreasing pinning strength in excellent agreement with experimental trends associated with the peak effect. We show that scaling relations exist between the distance between defects in the vortex lattice and the critical depinning force.

Instabilities and disorder-driven first-order transition of the vortex lattice

Transport studies in a Corbino disk geometry suggest that the Bragg glass phase undergoes a first-order transition into a disordered solid. This transition shows a sharp reentrant behavior at low fields. In contrast, in the conventional strip configuration, the phase transition is obscured by the injection of the disordered vortices through the sample edges, which results in the commonly observed vortex instabilities and smearing of the peak effect in NbSe2 crystals. These features are found to be absent in the Corbino geometry, in which the circulating vortices do not cross the sample edges.

Stable and Metastable vortex states and the first order transition across the peak effect region in weakly pinned 2H-NbSe_2

The peak effect in weakly pinned superconductors is accompanied by metastable vortex states. Each metastable vortex configuration is characterized by a different critical current density J_c, which mainly depends on the past thermomagnetic history of the superconductor. A recent model [G. Ravikumar, et al, Phys. Rev. B 61, R6479 (2000)] proposed to explain the history dependent J_c postulates a stable state of vortex lattice with a critical current density J_c^{st}, determined uniquely by the field and temperature. In this paper, we present evidence for the existence of the stable state of the vortex lattice in the peak effect region of 2H-NbSe_2. It is shown that this stable state can be reached from any metastable vortex state by cycling the applied field by a small amplitude. The minor magnetization loops obtained by repeated field cycling allow us to determine the pinning and "equilibrium" properties of the stable state of the vortex lattice at a given field and temperature unambiguously. The data imply the occurence of a first order phase transition from an ordered phase to a disordered vortex phase across the peak effect.

Amorphization of Vortex Matter and Reentrant Peak Effect in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$

The peak effect (PE) has been observed in a twinned crystal of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ for H$\parallel$c in the low field range, close to the zero field superconducting transition temperature (T$_c$(0)) . A sharp depinning transition succeeds the peak temperature T$_p$ of the PE. The PE phenomenon broadens and its internal structure smoothens out as the field is increased or decreased beyond the interval between 250 Oe and 1000 Oe. Moreover, the PE could not be observed above 10 kOe and below 20 Oe. The locus of the T$_p$(H) values shows a reentrant characteristic with a nose like feature located at T$_p$(H)/T$_c$(0)$\approx$0.99 and H$\approx$100 Oe (where the FLL constant a$_0$$\approx$penetration depth $λ$). The upper part of the PE curve (0.5 kOe$<$H$<$10 kOe) can be fitted to a melting scenario with the Lindemann number c$_L$$\approx$0.25. The vortex phase diagram near T$_c$(0) determined from the characteristic features of the PE in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$(H$\parallel$c) bears close resemblance to that in the 2H-NbSe$_2$ system, in which a reentrant PE had been observed earlier.

Dynamic instabilities and memory effects in vortex matter

Recent studies have shown a number of surprising vortex dynamics phenomena both in low and high temperature superconductors, which include: low frequency noise, slow voltage oscillations, history dependent dynamic response, memory of the direction, amplitude, duration, and frequency of the previously applied current, suppression of a large ac vortex response by a very small dc bias, and a strong frequency dependence. Taken together, these phenomena are incompatible with the current understanding of bulk vortex dynamics. We propose a generic mechanism to account for these observations in terms of the competition between the injection of a disordered vortex phase through the surface barriers at the sample edges, and the annealing of this metastable disorder by the transport current. The model is confirmed by investigating the current distribution across NbSe2 single crystals using arrays of Hall sensors. For an ac current only narrow regions near the edges are in the pinned disordered phase resulting in a large response. In the presence of a dc bias a wide region of the sample is filled by the disordered phase preventing vortex motion. The resulting spatial variation of the disorder across the sample acts as an active memory of the previously applied current sequence.

Peak Effect in Ca$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ : Vortex Phase Diagram and Evidences for Stepwise Amorphization of Flux Line Lattice

The Peak Effect (PE) regime in a single crystal of Ca$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ has been investigated in detail via ac susceptibility as well as dc magnetization measurements. The PE region comprises two discontinuous first order like transitions, located near its onset and peak positions and reflects a stepwise fracturing of the flux line lattice (FLL). This scenario can be construed as an alternative to a scheme involving the appearance of Generalized Fulde-Ferrel-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (GFFLO) state as considered in the case of PE phenomenon in isostructural Yb$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ system. The procedure of thermal cycling across the onset position of PE produces an open hysteresis loop, which is consistent with the notion of the fracturing of the FLL. A study of thermomagnetic history dependence of different metastable vortex states shows the path dependence in the critical current density J_c(H,T) over a large part of the (H,T) parameter space. The path dependence in J_c ceases above the peak position of the PE, suggesting a complete amorphization and the loss of long range correlations of the FLL at (T_p, H_p) line. A plausible vortex phase diagram has been illustrated for Ca$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$n and phases like an elastic solid, a plastic solid, a pinned amorphous and an unpinned amorphous states have been identified.

Evaporation of alpha particles from $^31$P nucleus

The energy spectra of alpha particles have been measured in coincidence with the evaporation residues for the decay of the compound nucleus $^31$P produced in the reaction $^19$F (96 MeV) + $^12$C. The data have been compared with the predictions of the statistical model code CASCADE. It has been observed that significant deformation effect in the compound nucleus need to be considered in order to explain the shape of the evaporated alpha particle energy spectra.

AC Dynamics and Metastability of a Flux-Line Lattice

We have measured the complex surface impedance of 2H-NbSe_2 in the mixed state over a wide range of magnetic field(0-2T) and frequency(10-3000MHz). A crossover between pinned and viscous dynamics of flux-lines is observed at a pinning frequency, $ω_p$. The measured $ω_p$ is compared to that predicted by a single-particle "washboard potential" model for the pinning interaction. When the flux lattice is prepared in an ordered state by zero-field cooling or by driving it with a large current, $ω_p$ is in good agreement with the predicted value. However, when it is prepared in a metastable disordered state by field cooling, $ω_p$ is nearly two orders of magnitude higher than expected indicating a complete break-down of the single-particle model.

Metastability and Glassy Behavior of a Driven Flux-Line Lattice

Strong metastability and history dependence are observed in DC and pulsed transport studies of flux-line lattices in 2H-$NbSe_{2}$, leading to the identification of two distinct states of the lattice with different spatial ordering. The metastability is most pronounced upon crossing a transition line marked by a large jump in the critical current (the peak effect). Current induced annealing of the metastable state towards the stable state is observed with a strongly current dependent annealing time, which diverges as a threshold current is approached from above.

Nature of Phase Transitions of Superconducting Wire Networks in a Magnetic Field

We study $I$-$V$ characteristics of periodic square Nb wire networks as a function of temperature in a transverse magnetic field, with a focus on three fillings 2/5, 1/2, and 0.618 that represent very different levels of incommensurability. For all three fillings, a scaling behavior of $I$-$V$ characteristics is found, suggesting a finite temperature continuous superconducting phase transition. The low-temperature $I$-$V$ characteristics are found to have an exponential form, indicative of the domain-wall excitations.

Peak Effect in Superconductors: Melting of Larkin Domains

Motivated by the recent observations of the peak effect in high-$T_c$ YBCO superconductors, we reexamine the origin of this unusual phenomenon. We show that the mechanism based on the $k$-dependence (nonlocality) of the vortex-lattice tilt modulus $C_{44}({\bf k})$ cannot account for the essential feature of the peak effect. We propose a scenario in which the peak effect is related to the melting of Larkin domains. In our model, the rise of critical current with increasing temperature is a result of a crossover from the Larkin pinning length to the length scale set by thermally excited free dislocations.
