The first observation of the $χ_{c1}(3872)\rightarrow J\mskip -3mu/\mskip -2muψμ^+μ^-$ decay is reported using proton-proton collision data recorded with the LHCb detector corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9fb^{-1}$. The decay mode is observed for the first time, with a significance of $6.5σ$. Its branching fraction is measured relative to the $χ_{c1}(3872)\rightarrow J\mskip -3mu/\mskip -2muψπ^+π^-$ decay mode \begin{align*} \frac{\cal{BF}(χ_{c1}(3872)\rightarrow J\mskip -3mu/\mskip -2muψμ^+μ^-)}{\cal{BF}(χ_{c1}(3872)\rightarrow J\mskip -3mu/\mskip -2muψπ^+π^-)} = \left(1.68\pm 0.32\pm 0.05\right)\times10^{-3}, \end{align*} where the first uncertainty includes both statistical contributions and systematic contributions which are uncorrelated between data-taking periods, and the second represents the systematic contributions that are correlated between data-taking periods.

First evidence of the decay $B^+\toπ^+ e^+ e^-$

The first evidence for the decay $B^+\toπ^+ e^+ e^-$ is reported using proton-proton collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb$^{-1}$. A signal excess with a significance of 3.2$σ$ is observed and the branching fraction is measured to be $\cal{BR}(B^+\toπ^+ e^+ e^-) = (2.4\,{}^{+0.9}_{-0.8} \,{}^{+0.4}_{-0.2}) \times 10^{-8}$, where the first set of uncertainties is statistical and the second is systematic. The result is consistent with the Standard Model expectation.

First evidence of the $B_s^0\rightarrow K^-π^+γ$ decay

The first search for the $B_s^0\rightarrow K^-π^+γ$ decay in the range $796<m(K^-π^+)<1800\,\text{MeV/}c^2$ is performed using data from proton-proton collisions collected by the LHCb experiment at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8, and 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb$^{-1}$. The photons are reconstructed through their conversion into an electron-positron pair, which significantly improves the mass resolution of the reconstructed decays with respect to decays with an unconverted photon. A signal excess with a significance of 3.5 standard deviations is measured, constituting the first experimental evidence for this decay. In the range $796<m(K^-π^+)<996\,\text{MeV/}c^2$, the ratio ${\cal R}$ between the branching fractions of the signal decay and the favoured $\kern 0.18em\overline{\kern -0.18em B}{}^0\rightarrow K^- π^+γ$ decay is measured to be ${\cal R} = (3.7\pm1.2\pm0.4)\times10^{-2}$ where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second is systematic. This measurement is consistent with the value predicted in the Standard Model. In the range $996<m(K^-π^+)<1800\,\text{MeV/}c^2$, the ratio ${\cal R} = (0.2\pm2.7\pm1.3)\times10^{-2}$ is measured.

Observation of a new excited charm-strange meson $D_{s1}(2933)^+$ in $B^0\to D^+ D^- K^+ π^-$ decays

A new excited charm-strange meson is observed through an amplitude analysis of the full phase space of $B^0\to D^+ D^- K^+ π^-$ decays. The analysis is based on a proton-proton collision data sample collected by the \lhcb experiment at a center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 13\,\text{TeV}$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4\text{fb}^{-1}$. The statistical significance of the new state exceeds $10$ standard deviations. Its Breit--Wigner mass and width are measured to be $m_0 = {2933}^{+6}_{-5}(\text{stat})^{+4}_{-3}(\text{syst}) \,\text{MeV} $ and $Γ_0 = {72}^{+18}_{-12}(\text{stat})^{+\phantom{0}7}_{-10}(\text{syst}) \,\text{MeV} $, respectively, and its spin-parity quantum numbers are determined to be $J^P = 1^+$. This new meson, denoted as $D_{s1}(2933)^+$, is a candidate for a $D_s(2P^{(\prime)}_{1})^+$ state.

Precision measurement of CP violation and branching fractions in $B^{\pm} \to K^0_{\mathrm{S}} h^{\pm}$ $(h = π, K)$ decays and search for the rare decay $B_c^{\pm} \to K^0_{\mathrm{S}} K^{\pm}$

The decay $B^{\pm} \to K^0_{\mathrm{S}} π^{\pm}$, with a $CP$ asymmetry expected to be close to zero in the Standard Model, is theoretically clean and sensitive to potential new physics. An analysis of the decays $B^{\pm} \to K^0_{\mathrm{S}} π^{\pm}$ and $B^{\pm} \to K^0_{\mathrm{S}} K^{\pm}$ is performed using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy of $13\,\mathrm{TeV}$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$. The \CP asymmetries are determined to be ${\cal A}^{CP}(B^{\pm} \to K^0_{\mathrm{S}} π^{\pm})=-0.028\pm 0.009\pm 0.009$ and ${\cal A}^{CP}(B^{\pm} \to K^0_{\mathrm{S}} K^{\pm})=0.118\pm 0.062 \pm 0.031$, and the branching fraction ratio is measured to be ${\cal B}(B^{\pm} \to K^0_{\mathrm{S}} K^{\pm})/{\cal B}(B^{\pm} \to K^0_{\mathrm{S}} π^{\pm})=0.055\pm 0.004 \pm 0.002$, where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second are systematic. These results are the most precise measurements of these quantities to date. A search for the rare decay $B_c^{\pm} \to K^0_{\mathrm{S}} K^{\pm}$ is also performed. No significant signal is observed, and the upper limit on the product of the branching fraction ratio ${\cal B}(B_c^{\pm} \to K^0_{\mathrm{S}} K^{\pm})/{\cal B}(B^{\pm} \to K^0_{\mathrm{S}} π^{\pm})$ and the fragmentation-fraction ratio $f_c/f_u$ is set to be 0.015 (0.016) at the 90\% (95\%) confidence level.

Measurement of inclusive production of charmonium states in $b$-hadron decays via their decay into $ϕϕ$

The inclusive production of the $η_c(1S)$, $η_c(2S)$ and $χ_{c}$ charmonium states in $b$-hadron decays is studied with LHCb Run~2 data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.9~\text{fb}^{-1}$, using charmonia decays to $ϕϕ$ pairs. The production branching fractions of the $χ_{c}(1P)$ states in $b$-hadron decays are measured, using $b \to η_c(1S) (\to ϕϕ) X$ as a normalisation channel, with $X$ indicating any additional particles. The results are \begin{align*} &{\cal{B}} (b \to χ_{c0} X) = (1.34 \pm 0.13 \pm 0.06 \pm 0.37) \times 10^{-3}, &{\cal{B}} (b \to χ_{c1} X) = (1.58 \pm 0.12 \pm 0.09 \pm 0.44) \times 10^{-3}, &{\cal{B}} (b \to χ_{c2} X) = (0.55 \pm 0.08 \pm 0.05 \pm 0.15) \times 10^{-3}, \end{align*} where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the last is due to the limited knowledge of externally measured branching fractions. The production branching fraction of $η_c(2S)$ times the branching fraction of its decay into $ϕϕ$ is measured as ${\cal{B}} (b \to η_c(2S) X) \times {\cal{B}} (η_c(2S) \to ϕϕ) = (4.0 \pm 0.6 \pm 0.6 \pm 1.1) \times 10^{-7}$. Furthermore, the mass of the $η_c(1S)$ state is measured to be $M_{η_c(1S)} = 2984.1 \pm 0.5 \pm 0.5$ MeV with the best precision to date.

Search for the lepton-flavour violating decays $B^+ \to π^+ μ^\pm e^\mp$

The first search for the lepton-flavour violating decays $B^+ \to π^+ μ^{\pm} e^{\mp}$ in proton-proton collisions is presented, using data collected by the LHCb experiment between 2011 and 2018, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 9 fb$^{-1}$. No significant signal is observed and an upper limit on the branching fraction is set at $\mathcal{B}(B^+ \to π^+ μ^{\pm} e^{\mp}) < 1.8 \times 10^{-9}$ at the $90\%$ confidence level, two orders of magnitude more restrictive than the current world average. This is the first constraint on lepton-flavour violating $b \to d$ quark transitions at the LHC and also sets the most stringent upper limits to date on $b \to d μ^{\pm} e^{\mp}$ transitions. Limits on left-handed and scalar scenarios beyond the Standard Model are also reported.

Observation and investigation of the $T_{c\bar{c}1}(4430)^{+}$ structure in $B^{+} \to ψ(2S) K_{\text{S}}^{0} π^{+}$ decays

The first four-dimensional amplitude analysis of the $B^{+} \to ψ(2S) K_{\text{S}}^{0} π^{+}$ decay is performed with proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment at $\sqrt{s} = 13~\rm{TeV}$, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4~\rm{fb^{-1}}$. The data cannot be fully explained by $B^{+} \to ψ(2S) K^{*+}$ contributions alone. A significantly better description of the data is obtained by adding a $T_{c\bar{c}}^{+}$ contribution decaying to $ψ(2S)π^{+}$. The properties of the $T_{c\bar{c}}^{+}$ structure are consistent with the exotic state $T_{c\bar{c}1}(4430)^{+}$ reported in the isospin-related $\bar{B}^{0} \to ψ(2S) K^{-} π^{+}$ decay. Effects of a possible $T_{c\bar{c}1}(4430)^{+} \to \bar{D}_{1}^{*}(2600)^{0} D^{+}$ decay mode on the $T_{c\bar{c}1}(4430)^{+} \to ψ(2S)π^{+}$ mass distribution are investigated through a Flatté parametrization, providing constraints on the relative decay strength. A description of the $T_{c\bar{c}1}(4430)^{+}$ structure using the triangle singularity mechanism is studied and also found to be consistent with the data.

Search for heavy neutral leptons in B-meson decays

A search for long-lived heavy neutral leptons produced in B-meson decays and decaying to a $ μ^\pm π^\mp$ final state is performed with data collected by the LHCb experiment in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$. The results are interpreted in both lepton-number-conserving and lepton-number-violating scenarios. No significant excess is observed. Constraints are placed on the squared mixing element $|U_{μN}|^2$ to the active muon neutrino, under the assumption that couplings to other lepton flavours are negligible, in the mass range of $1.6$-$5.5$ GeV.

Proximate Spin Liquid Ground State Arising from Competing Stripy and 120$^{\circ}$ Spin Correlations in the Triangular Quantum Antiferromagnet ErMgGaO$_4$

ErMgGaO$_4$ is a quantum antiferromagnet wherein the pseudospin-1/2 degrees of freedom of Er$^{3+}$ decorate two-dimensional triangular planes separated by disordered non-magnetic bilayers of Mg$^{2+}$ and Ga$^{3+}$. Unlike its sister compound, YbMgGaO$_4$, our powder ErMgGaO$_4$ sample shows a clear spin glass transition near $T_g \sim 2.5$~K, about 1/6 of its Curie-Weiss temperature. We have carried out new inelastic neutron scattering measurements on these powder ErMgGaO$_4$ samples. At high energies, we observed crystalline electric field (CEF) transitions within the $J=15/2$ multiplet of Er$^{3+}$, but with the first excited CEF level sufficiently low in energy ($\sim$ 3~meV) so as to allow the possibility that virtual CEF transitions influence the exchange couplings. At E=0, we observe diffuse elastic scattering which is analysed using Warren lineshapes appropriate for two dimensional correlations. This reveals dominant 2D stripy correlations below $T_g$, coexisting with 2D 120$^\circ$-type correlations that persist above $T_g$. At low temperatures, the low energy inelastic component of the scattering shows a continuum with bandwidth of $\sim$ 0.8~meV. This dynamic magnetic spectral weight can be modeled at all $Q$, energies, and temperatures as the sum of high energy and low energy damped harmonic oscillators (DHO), with the high energy DHO defining the bandwidth of $\sim$ 0.8~meV. We use linear spin wave theory to model this inelastic scattering and to estimate its spin Hamiltonian parameters in terms of a $J_1-J_2-Δ$ model on the triangular lattice. This gives a good description of the low lying spectral weight for ErMgGaO4, and allows us to place it on the theoretical $J_1-J_2-Δ$ phase diagram with $\frac{J_1}{J_2}=0.13 \pm 0.03$ and $Δ=0.4 \pm 0.1$, which is close to the expected quantum phase boundary between the spin liquid and the stripy ordered phases.

First observation of the $\overline{B}_{s}^{0}\toΛ_{c}^{+}\overlineΛ_{c}{}^{-}$ decay and evidence for the $\overline{B}^{0}\toΛ_{c}^{+}\overlineΛ_{c}{}^{-}$ decay

A search is presented for the two-body charmed baryonic decays $\overline{B}_{(s)}^{0}\toΛ_{c}^{+}\overlineΛ_{c}{}^{-}$, using a data sample collected by the LHCb experiment during 2011--2012 and 2015--2018 corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$. The first observation of the $\overline{B}_{s}^{0}\toΛ_{c}^{+}\overlineΛ_{c}{}^{-}$ decay is reported with $6.2σ$ significance, along with $4.3σ$ evidence for the $\overline{B}^{0}\toΛ_{c}^{+}\overlineΛ_{c}{}^{-}$ decay. The branching fractions are measured to be $\mathcal{B}{}(\overline{B}^{0}\toΛ_{c}^{+}\overlineΛ_{c}{}^{-}) = (1.01^{+0.27}_{-0.28} \pm 0.08 \pm 0.15) \times 10^{-5}$ and $\mathcal{B}{}(\overline{B}_{s}^{0}\toΛ_{c}^{+}\overlineΛ_{c}{}^{-}) = (5.0 \pm 1.3 \pm 0.5 \pm 0.8) \times 10^{-5}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic, and the third due to external inputs. These results provide novel experimental inputs for the theoretical framework describing two-body baryonic decays of $B$ mesons via $W$-emission and $W$-exchange mechanisms.

Observation of the rare baryonic decay $B^{+}\rightarrow p \bar{\itΛ}$ and measurement of its weak decay parameter

The first observation of the decay $B^{+}\rightarrow p \bar{\itΛ}$ is presented, using proton-proton collision data collected by the LHCb experiment between 2016 and 2018 at a center-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $5.4\,\mathrm{fb}^{-1}$. The signal significance exceeds seven standard deviations. Using the $B^{+} \rightarrow K^{\mathrm{0}}_{\mathrm{S}} π^{+}$ decay as a normalization channel, the branching fraction is measured and combined with previous LHCb results based on data collected at 7 and 8 TeV in 2011 and 2012, yielding $\mathcal{B}(B^{+}\rightarrow p \bar{\itΛ})=(1.24\pm 0.17\pm 0.05\pm 0.03)\times 10^{-7}$, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic, and the third comes from the uncertainty on the branching fraction of the normalization channel. The $B^{+}\rightarrow p \bar{\itΛ}$ weak decay parameter is measured to be $α_B = 0.87_{-0.29}^{+0.26} \pm 0.09$, indicating the presence of comparable S-wave and P-wave decay amplitudes.

First experimental determination of the $^{40}$Ar($n,2n$)$^{39}$Ar reaction cross section and $^{39}$Ar production in Earth's atmosphere

The cosmogenic $^{39}$Ar(t$_{1/2}$= 268 years) isotope of argon is used for geophysical dating and tracing owing to its appropriate half-life and chemical inertness as a noble gas; $^{39}$Ar serves also in nuclear weapon test monitoring. We measured for the first time the total cross section of the main $^{39}$Ar cosmogenic production reaction in the atmosphere, namely $^{40}$Ar$(n,2n)^{39}$Ar, using 14.8$\pm0.3$ MeV neutrons. The neutrons, produced by a deuterium-tritium generator, impinged on a stainless steel sphere filled with Ar gas highly enriched in the $^{40}$Ar isotope. The reaction yield was measured by atom counting of $^{39}$Ar with noble gas accelerator mass spectrometry and, independently, by decay counting relative to atmospheric argon. A total $^{40}$Ar$(n,2n)^{39}$Ar cross section of 610$\pm100$ mb was determined. This result serves as a benchmark for recent theoretical calculations and evaluations, found to reproduce well the experimental total cross section. We use these energy-dependent theoretical cross sections together with experimental spectra of cosmogenic neutrons at different altitudes to calculate the global average rate of neutron-induced $^{39}$Ar atmospheric production, resulting in $770\pm240$ $^{39}$Ar atoms/cm$^2$/day. The secular equilibrium between the $^{39}$Ar calculated production rate and radioactive decay rate leads to a partial isotopic abundance $^{39}$Ar/Ar$= (5.9\pm 1.8) \times 10^{-16}$, showing that $\approx$73% of atmospheric $^{39}$Ar is produced by cosmogenic neutrons. The $^{40}$Ar($n,2n$)$^{39}$Ar cross section at 14 MeV is also a key parameter for quantifying the anthropogenic contribution to atmospheric $^{39}$Ar produced during the thermonuclear tests of the 1960s. We estimate that anthropogenic $^{39}$Ar accounts for roughly 20% of the present atmospheric inventory.

Evidence for spin liquid behavior in the frustrated three-dimensional $S = 1/2$ Heisenberg garnet NaCa$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$(VO$_{4}$)$_{3}$

Three-dimensional quantum spin liquids have remained elusive, hindered by reduced quantum fluctuations from larger lattice connectivity inherent to high-dimensional systems. Here, we investigate the remarkable persistence of dynamical short-range magnetic correlations in the nearly body-centered cubic garnet NaCa$_{2}$Cu$_{2}$(VO$_{4}$)$_{3}$ down to $T = 50$ mK, two orders of magnitude below its Curie-Weiss temperature. Using a combination of neutron and muon spectroscopies plus numerical simulations, we demonstrate that a dynamical regime emerges, characterized by a dual response in the inelastic spectrum composed of short-live dispersive excitations and a quasi-elastic component. Strongly frustrated exchange interactions combined with subtle temperature-dependent Jahn-Teller spin-lattice effects are a plausible mechanism to explain the origin of this spin-liquid behavior.

The survey of planetary nebulae in Andromeda (M31) VII. Predictions of a major merger simulation model compared with chemodynamical data of the disc and inner halo substructures

The nearest giant spiral, M31, exhibits a kinematically hot stellar disc, a global star formation episode ~2-4 Gyr ago, and conspicuous substructures in its stellar halo that are suggestive of a recent accretion event. Recent chemodynamical measurements in the M31 disc and inner halo can be used as additional constraints for N-body hydrodynamical simulations that successfully reproduce the disc age-velocity dispersion relation and star formation history as well as the morphology of the inner halo substructures. We combined a simulation of a major merger (mass ratio 1:4) with a well-motivated chemical model to predict abundance distributions and gradients in the merger remnant at z=0. We computed the projected phase space and the [M/H] distributions for the substructures in the M31 inner halo, namely, the Giant Stellar Stream (GSS) and the North-East (NE) and Western (W) shelves, and compared them with recent measurements for the M31 stars in the inner halo. This major merger model predicts (i) multiple distinct components within each of the substructures; (ii) a high mean metallicity and large spread in the GSS and NE and W Shelves which explain various photometric and spectroscopic metallicity measurements; (iii) simulated phase space diagrams that qualitatively reproduce various features identified in the projected phase space of the substructures in published data from the DESI; (iv) a large distance spread in the GSS, as suggested by previous tip of the RGB measurements; and (v) phase space ridges caused by several wraps of the secondary as well as up-scattered main M31 disc stars that also have plausible counterparts in the observed phase spaces. These results provide further strong and independent arguments for a major satellite merger in M31 ~3 Gyr ago and a coherent explanation for many of the observational results that make M31 appear so different from the Milky Way.

Competition between the neutron-proton pair break-ups delineating the level structure of 202Po

High-spin spectroscopic study of $^{202}$Po ($Z$ = 84, $N$ = 118) has been carried out using the $^{195}$Pt($^{12}$C, 5n)$^{202}$Po fusion-evaporation reaction. An extended level scheme has been proposed up to an excitation energy of $E_x\approx$ 8 MeV and angular momentum of 27$\hbar$, with the addition of 57 newly observed $γ$-ray transitions, along with the revisions in the placement of 8 already known transitions and the multipolarities of 4 of these transitions. The energy of the unobserved 8$^+ \rightarrow 6^+$ transition has been proposed to be 9.0(5) keV, which resolves the uncertainty in the excitation energy of the levels above the 6$^{+}$ state. Three new sequences of $M1$ transitions have also been identified in the high excitation energy regime and included in the proposed level scheme. The large-scale shell model calculations for $Z>82$ and $N<126$ valence space have been carried out using PBPOP interaction which explained the overall level scheme for both the positive and negative parity states. The calculations successfully reproduced the purity of the proton $πh_{9/2}$ dominated $8^+$ isomeric state, and also explained the missing $E2$ decay of the ${12}^+$ isomeric state in terms of changing nucleonic configurations.
