Carrier freeze-out induced metal-insulator transition in oxygen deficient SrTiO3 films

We report the optical, electrical transport, and magnetotransport properties of high quality oxygen deficient SrTiO3 (STO) single crystal film fabricated by pulsed laser deposition and reduced in the vacuum chamber. The oxygen vacancy distribution in the thin film is expected to be uniform. By comparing the electrical properties with oxygen deficient bulk STO, it was found that the oxygen vacancies in bulk STO is far from uniform over the whole material. The metal-insulator transition (MIT) observed in the oxygen deficient STO film was found to be induced by the carrier freeze-out effect. The low temperature frozen state can be re-excited by an electric field, Joule heating, and surprisingly also a large magnetic field.

The effect of layer number and substrate on the stability of graphene under MeV proton beam irradiation

The use of graphene electronics in space will depend on the radiation hardness of graphene. The damage threshold of graphene samples, subjected to 2 MeV proton irradiation, was found to increase with layer number and also when the graphene layer was supported by a substrate. The thermal properties of graphene as a function of the number of layers or as influenced by the substrate argue against a thermal model for the production of damage by the ion beam. We propose a model of intense electronically-stimulated surface desorption of the atoms as the most likely process for this damage mechanism.

Nonlinear Insulator in Complex Oxides

The insulating state is one of the most basic electronic phases in condensed matter. This state is characterised by an energy gap for electronic excitations that makes an insulator electrically inert at low energy. However, for complex oxides, the very concept of an insulator must be re-examined. Complex oxides behave differently from conventional insulators such as SiO2, on which the entire semiconductor industry is based, because of the presence of multiple defect levels within their band gap. As the semiconductor industry is moving to such oxides for high-dielectric (high-k) materials, we need to truly understand the insulating properties of these oxides under various electric field excitations. Here we report a new class of material called nonlinear insulators that exhibits a reversible electric-field-induced metal-insulator transition. We demonstrate this behaviour for an insulating LaAlO3 thin film in a metal/LaAlO3/Nb-SrTiO3 heterostructure. Reproducible transitions were observed between a low-resistance metallic state and a high-resistance non-metallic state when applying suitable voltages. Our experimental results exclude the possibility that diffusion of the metal electrodes or oxygen vacancies into the LaAlO3 layer is occurring. Instead, the phenomenon is attributed to the formation of a quasi-conduction band (QCB) in the defect states of LaAlO3 that forms a continuum state with the conduction band of the Nb-SrTiO3. Once this continuum (metallic) state is formed, the state remains stable even when the voltage bias is turned off. An opposing voltage is required to deplete the charges from the defect states. Our ability to manipulate and control these defect states and, thus, the nonlinear insulating properties of complex oxides will open up a new path to develop novel devices.

Temperature dependent Raman and x-ray studies of spin-ice pyrochlore $Dy_2Ti_2O_7$ and non-magnetic pyrochlore $Lu_2Ti_2O_7$

We present here temperature-dependent Raman, x-ray diffraction and specific heat studies between room temperature and 12 K on single crystals of spin-ice pyrochlore compound $Dy_2Ti_2O_7$ and its non-magnetic analogue $Lu_2Ti_2O_7$. Raman data show a "new" band not predicted by factor group analysis of Raman-active modes for the pyrochlore structure in $Dy_2Ti_2O_7$, appearing below a temperature of $T_c=$110 K with a concomitant contraction of the cubic unit cell volume as determined from the powder x-ray diffraction analysis. Low temperature Raman experiments on O$^{18}$-isotope substituted $Dy_2Ti_2O_7$ confirm the phonon origin of the "new" mode. These findings, absent in $Lu_2Ti_2O_7$, suggest that the room temperature cubic lattice of the pyrochlore $Dy_2Ti_2O_7$ undergoes a "subtle" structural transformation near $T_c$. We find anomalous \textit{red-shift} of some of the phonon modes in both the $Dy_2Ti_2O_7$ and the $Lu_2Ti_2O_7$ as the temperature decreases, which is attributed to strong phonon-phonon anharmonic interactions.

On atomic analogue of Landau quantization

We have studied the physics of atoms with permanent electric dipole moment and non vanishing magnetic moment interacting with an electric field and inhomogeneous magnetic field. This system can be demonstrated as the atomic analogue of Landau quantization of charged particles in a uniform magnetic field. This Landau-like atomic problem is also studied with space-space noncommutative coordinates.

Spin Hall Effect For Anyons

We explain the intrinsic spin Hall effect from generic anyon dynamics in the presence of external electromagnetic field. The free anyon is represented as a spinning particle with an underlying non-commutative configuration space. The Berry curvature plays a major role in the analysis.

Noncommutative Geometry and Geometric Phases

We have studied particle motion in generalized forms of noncommutative phase space, that simulate monopole and other forms of Berry curvature, that can be identified as effective internal magnetic fields, in coordinate and momentum space. The Ahranov-Bohm effect has been considered in this form of phase space, with operatorial structures of noncommutativity. Physical significance of our results are also discussed.

Consequences of niobium doping for the ferromagnetism and microstructure of anatase Co: TiO2 films

It is shown that dilute niobium doping has significant effect on the ferromagnetism and microstructure of dilutely cobalt-doped anatase TiO2 films. Epitaxial films of anatase TiO2 with 3% Co, without and with 1% niobium doping were grown by pulsed-laser deposition at 875 C at different oxygen pressures. For growth at 10^{-5} Torr niobium doping suppresses the ferromagnetism, while it enhances the same in films grown at 10^{-4} Torr. High-resolution Z-contrast Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy and Electron Energy Loss Spectroscopy show uniform surface segregation of cobalt-rich Ti_{1-x-y}Co_{x}Nb_{y}O_{2-d} phase, but without cobalt metal clusters.

Charge and Statistics of Quasiparticles in Fractional Quantum Hall Effec

We have studied here the charge and statistics of quasiparticle excitations in FQH states on the basis of the Berry phase approach incorporating the fact that even number of flux quanta can be gauged away when the Berry phase is removed to the dynamical phase. It is observed that the charge $q$ and statistical parameter $θ$ of a quasiparticle at filling factor $ν=\frac{n}{2pn+1}$ are given by $q=(\frac{n}{2pn+1})e$ and $θ=\frac{n}{2pn+1}$, with the fact that the charge of the quasihole is opposite to that of the quasielectron. Using Laughlin wave function for quasiparticles, numerical studies have been done following the work of Kjønsberg and Myrheim \cite{KM} for FQH states at $ν=1/3$ and it is pointed out that as in case of quasiholes, the statistics parameter can be well defined for quasielectrons having the value $θ=1/3$.

Large spin splitting of GaN electronic states induced by Gd doping

We present a detailed study of the magnetic-field and temperature-dependent polarization of the near-band-gap photoluminescence in Gd-doped GaN layers. Our study reveals an extraordinarily strong influence of Gd doping on the electronic states in the GaN matrix. We observe that the spin splitting of the valence band reverses its sign for Gd concentrations as low as 1.6 x 10^{16} cm^{-3}. This remarkable result can be understood only in terms of a long range induction of magnetic moments in the surrounding GaN matrix by the Gd ions.

Large Second Harmonic Kerr rotation in GaFeO3 thin films on YSZ buffered Silicon

Epitaxial thin films of gallium iron oxide (GaFeO3) are grown on (001) silicon by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) using yttrium-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) buffer layer. The crystalline template buffer layer is in-situ PLD grown through the step of high temperature stripping of the intrinsic silicon surface oxide. The X-ray diffraction pattern shows c-axis orientation of YSZ and b-axis orientation of GaFeO3 on Si (100) substrate. The ferromagnetic transition temperature (TC ~ 215 K) is in good agreement with the bulk data. The films show a large nonlinear second harmonic Kerr rotation of ~15 degrees in the ferromagnetic state.

Percolative Ferromagnetism in Anatase Co:TiO2

We revisit the most widely investigated and controversial oxide diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS), Co:TiO2, with a new high temperature film growth, and show that the corresponding material is not only an intrinsic DMS ferromagnet, but also supports a percolative mechanism of ferromagnetism. We establish the uniformity of dopant distribution across the film cross section by Z-contrast imaging via scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) and electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) at spatial resolution of 0.4 nm and the oxidized 2+ valence state of cobalt by x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The dependence of magnetic properties on cobalt concentration is consistent with the defect polaron percolation model. The peculiar increase in the transport activation energy above a specific cobalt concentration further emphasizes the polaron contribution to magnetic order.

GaN:Gd: A superdilute ferromagnetic semiconductor with a Curie temperature above 300 K

We investigate the magnetic and magneto-optic properties of epitaxial GaN:Gd layers as a function of the external magnetic field and temperature. An unprecedented magnetic moment is observed in this diluted magnetic semiconductor. The average value of the moment per Gd atom is found to be as high as 4000 \mub as compared to its atomic moment of 8 \mub. The long-range spin-polarization of the GaN matrix by Gd is also reflected in the circular polarization of magneto-photoluminescence measurements. Moreover, the materials system is found to be ferromagnetic above room temperature in the entire concentration range under investigation (7$\times10^{15}$ to 2$\times10^{19}$ cm$^{-3}$). We propose a phenomenological model to understand the macroscopic magnetic behavior of the system. Our study reveals a close connection between the observed ferromagnetism and the colossal magnetic moment of Gd.

High $T_c$ Superconductivity, Skyrmions and the Berry Phase

It is here pointed out that the antiferromagnetic spin fluctuation may be associated with a gauge field which gives rise to the antiferromagnetic ground state chirality. This is associated with the chiral anomaly and Berry phase when we consider the two dimensional spin system on the surface of a 3D sphere with a monopole at the centre. This realizes the RVB state where spinons and holons can be understood as chargeless spins and spinless holes attached with magnetic flux. The attachment of the magnetic flux of the charge carrier suggest, that this may be viewed as a skyrmion. The interaction of a massless fermion representing a neutral spin with a gauge field along with the interaction of a spinless hole with the gauge field enhances the antiferromagnetic correlation along with the pseudogap at the underdoped region. As the doping increases the antiferromagnetic long range order disappears for the critical doping parameter $δ_{sc}$. In this framework, the superconducting pairing may be viewed as caused by skyrmion-skyrmion bound states.

Quantum Hall Skyrmions in the framework of O(4) Non-linear Sigma Model

A new framework for quantum Hall skyrmions in O(4) nonlinear sigma model is studied here. The size and energy of the skyrmions are determined incorporating the quartic stability term in the Lagrangian. Moreover, the introduction of a $θ$-term determines the spin and statistics of these skyrmions.

Magnus Force on Quantum Hall Skyrmions and Vortices

We have discussed here the Magnus force acting on the vortices and skyrmions in the quantum Hall systems. We have found that it is generated by the chirality of the system which is associated with the Berry phase and is same for both the cases.

Polarization Of Quantum Hall States, Skyrmions and Berry Phase

We have discussed here the polarization of quantum Hall states in the framework of the hierarchical analysis of IQHE and FQHE in terms of Berry phase. It is observed that we have fully polarized states for the filling factor $ν=1$ as well as $ν=\frac{1}{2m+1}$, $m$ being an integer. However, for $ν=p$ as well as $ν=\frac{p}{q}$, with $p>1$ and odd, $q$ odd we have partially polarized states and for $ν=\frac{p}{q}$, $p$ even, $q$ odd we have unpolarized states. It has been found that skyrmion excitations exist only for fully polarized states and for partially polarized and unpolarized states skyrmionic excitations do not exist.
