Physical realization of the generalized fully frustrated XY model in an array of SFS junctions

We show that a physical realization of the phase diagram proposed by Minnhagen et al. [Phys. Rev. B 78, 184432 (2008)] for so-called generalized fully frustrated XY model on square lattice can be achieved in arrays of SFS (superconductor-ferromagnet-superconductor) junctions near the transition of the junctions to $π$-state. Moreover, the phase diagram with such a topology has to be reproduced twice, on both sides of the $0-π$ transition.

Finite-temperature phase transitions in the quantum fully frustrated Ising models

The quantum antiferromagnetic spin-1/2 Ising model on a triangular lattice and analogous fully frustrated Ising model on a square lattice with quantum fluctuations induced by the application of the transverse magnetic field are studied at finite temperatures by constructing an exact mapping onto a purely classical model with a more complex interaction. It is shown that in weak fields the temperatures of the phase transitions separating the critical phase from the ordered and disordered phases in both models are proportional to the magnitude of the field.

Degeneracy and ordering of the non-coplanar phase of the classical bilinear-biquadratic Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice

We investigate the zero-temperature behavior of the classical Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice in which the competition between exchange interactions of different orders favors a relative angle between neighboring spins in the interval (0,2pi/3). In this situation, the ground states are noncoplanar and have an infinite discrete degeneracy. In the generic case, the set of the ground states is in one to one correspondence (up to a global rotation) with the non-crossing loop coverings of the three equivalent honeycomb sublattices into which the bonds of the triangular lattice can be partitioned. This allows one to identify the order parameter space as an infinite Cayley tree with coordination number 3. Building on the duality between a similar loop model and the ferromagnetic O(3) model on the honeycomb lattice, we argue that a typical ground state should have long-range order in terms of spin orientation. This conclusion is further supported by the comparison with the four-state antiferromagnetic Potts model [describing the case when the angle between neighboring spins is equal to arccos(-1/3)], which at zero temperature is critical and in terms of the solid-on-solid representation is located exactly at the point of roughening transition. At other values of the angle between neighboring spins an additional constraint appears, whose presence drives the system into an ordered phase (unless this angle is equal to pi/2, when another constraint is removed and the model becomes trivially exactly solvable).

Ordered phases and phase transitions in the fully frustrated XY model on a honeycomb lattice

The phase diagram of the fully frustrated XY model on a honeycomb lattice is shown to incorporate three different ordered phases. In the most unusual of them, a long-range order is related not to the dominance of a particular periodic vortex pattern but to the orientation of zero-energy domain walls separating domains with different orientations of vortex stripes. The phase transition leading to the destruction of this phase can be associated with the appearance of free fractional vortices and is of the first order. The stabilization of the two other ordered phases (existing at lower temperatures) relies a positive contribution to domain-wall free energy induced by the presence of spin waves. This effect has a substantial numerical smallness, in accordance with which these two phases can be observed only in the systems of really macroscopic sizes. In physical systems (like magnetically frustrated Josephson junction arrays and superconducting wire networks), the presence of additional interactions must lead to a better stabilization of the phase with the long-range order in terms of vortex pattern and improve the possibilities of its observation.

Continuous interpolation between the fully frustrated Ising and quantum dimer models

We propose a new quantum model interpolating between the fully frustrated spin-1/2 Ising model in a transverse field and a dimer model. This model contains a resonating-valence-bond phase, including a line with an exactly solvable ground state of the Rokhsar-Kivelson type. We discuss the phase diagrams of this model on the square and triangular (in terms of the dimer representation) lattices.

Phase diagram of the fully frustrated transverse-field Ising model on the honeycomb lattice

Motivated by the current interest in the quantum dimer model on the triangular lattice, we investigate the phase diagram of the closely related fully-frustrated transverse field Ising model on the honeycomb lattice using classical and semi-classical approximations. We show that, in addition to the fully polarized phase at large field, the classical model possesses a multitude of phases that break the translational symmetry which in the dimer language, correspond to a plaquette phase and a columnar phase separated by an infinite cascade of mixed phases. The modification of the phase diagram by quantum fluctuations has been investigated in the context of linear spin-wave theory. The extrapolation of the semiclassical energies suggests that the plaquette phase extends down to zero field for spin 1/2, in agreement with the $\sqrt{12}\times\sqrt{12}$ phase of the quantum dimer model on the triangular lattice with only kinetic energy.

Sequence of phase transitions induced in an array of Josephson junctions by their crossover to pi-state

We show that the transition of Josephson junctions between the conventional and pi states caused by the decrease in temperature induces in a regular two-dimensional array of such junctions not just a single phase transition between two phases with different ordering but a sequence of two, three or four phase transitions. The corresponding phase diagrams are constructed for the cases of bipartite (square or honeycomb) and triangular lattices.

Explicit solution of the optimal fluctuation problem for an elastic string in random potential

The free-energy distribution function of an elastic string in a quenched random potential, P(F), is investigated with the help of the optimal-fluctuation approach. The form of the far-right tail of P(F) is found by constructing the exact solution of the non-linear saddle-point equations describing the asymptotic form of the optimal fluctuation. The solution of the problem is obtained for two different types of boundary conditions and for an arbitrary dimension of the imbeding space 1+d with d from the interval 0<d<2. The results are also applicable for the description of the far-left tail of the height distribution function in the stochastic growth problem described by the d-dimensional Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation.

Two-level systems and mass deficit in quantum solids

We study a disordered quantum solid incorporating two-level systems in which a group of atoms (or a single atom) can experience coherent tunnelling between two different positions and demonstrate that an effective mass deficit induced by the presence of such objects can manifest itself only at relatively high frequencies and should vanish in the low-frequency limit. The crossover to the regime which can be associated with the appearance of an effective mass deficit has been observed in recent torsional oscillator experiments.

Universal and non-universal tails of distribution functions in the directed polymer and KPZ problems

The optimal fluctuation approach is applied to study the most distant (non-universal) tails of the free-energy distribution function P(F) for an elastic string (of a large but finite length L) interacting with a quenched random potential. A further modification of this approach is proposed which takes into account the renormalization effects and allows one to study the most close (universal) parts of the tails. The problem is analyzed for different dimensions of a space in which the polymer is imbedded. In terms the stochastic growth problem, the same distribution function describes the distribution of heights in the regime of a non-stationary growth in a situation when an interface starts to grow from a flat configuration.

Joint free energy distribution in the random directed polymer problem

We consider two configurations of a random directed polymer of length L confined to a plane and ending in two points separated by 2u. Defining the mean free energy $\bar F$ and the free energy difference F' of the two configurations, we determine the joint distribution function P_{L,u}(\bar F,F') using the replica approach. We find that for large L and large negative free energies $\bar F$, the joint distribution function factorizes into longitudinal (P_{L,u} (\bar F)) and transverse (P_{u}(F')) components, which furthermore coincide with results obtained prevously via different independent routes.

Comment on "Probing vortex unbinding via dipole fluctuations"

We demonstrate that the method suggested by Fertig and Straley [Phys. Rev. B 66, 201402 (2002)] for the identification of different phases in two-dimensional XY models does not allow to make any unambiguous conclusions and make a tentative proposal of another approach to this problem.

Optimal fluctuation approach to a directed polymer in a random medium

A modification of the optimal fluctuation approach is applied to study the tails of the free energy distribution function P(F) for an elastic string in quenched disorder both in the regions of the universal behavior of P(F) and in the regions of large fluctuations, where the behavior of P(F) is non-universal. The difference between the two regimes is shown to consist in whether it is necessary or not to take into account the renormalization of parameters by the fluctuations of disorder in the vicinity of the optimal fluctuation.

Nature of phase transition(s) in striped phase of triangular-lattice Ising antiferromagnet

Different scenarios of the fluctuation-induced disordering of the striped phase which is formed at low temperatures in the triangular-lattice Ising model with the antiferromagnetic interaction of nearest and next-to-nearest neighbors are analyzed and compared. The dominant mechanism of the disordering is related to the formation of a network of domain walls, which is characterized by an extensive number of zero modes and has to appear via the first-order phase transition. In principle, this first-order transition can be preceded by a continuous one, related to the spontaneous formation of double domain walls and a partial restoration of the broken symmetry, but the realization of such a scenario requires the fulfillment of rather special relations between the coupling constants.

Fluctuation induced vortex pattern and its disordering in the fully frustrated XY model on a dice lattice

A highly degenerate family of states [proposed in PRB 63, 134503 (2001)] is proven to really minimize the Hamiltonian of the fully frustrated XY model on a dice lattice. The harmonic fluctuations are shown to be no consequence for the removal of the accidental degeneracy of these states, so a particular vortex pattern can be stabilized only by the anharmonic fluctuations. The structure of this pattern is found and the temperature of its disordering due to the proliferation of domain walls is estimated. The extreme smallness of the fluctuations induced free energy of domain walls leads to the anomalous prominence of the finite-size effects, which prevent the observation of vortex-pattern ordering in numerical simulations. In such a situation the loss of phase coherence may be related to the dissociation of fractional vortices with topological charges 1/8. In a physical situation the magnetic interaction of currents in a Josephson junction array will be a more important source for the stabilization of a particular vortex pattern than the anharmonic fluctuations.

Structure of the superconducting state in a fully frustrated wire network with dice lattice geometry

The superconducting state in a fully frustrated wire network with the dice lattice geometry is investigated in the vicinity of the transition temperature. Using Abrikosov's variational procedure, we write the Ginzburg-Landau free energy functional projected on its unstable supspace as an effective model on the triangular lattice of sixfold coordinated sites. For this latter model, we obtain a large class of degenerate equilibrium configurations in one to one correspondence with those previously constructed for the pure XY model on the maximally frustrated dice lattice. The entropy of these states is proportional to the linear size of the system. Finally we show that magnetic interactions between currents provide a degeneracy lifting mechanism.

Uniformly frustrated XY model without vortex-pattern ordering

The uniformly frustrated XY model with f=1/3 on a dice lattice is shown to possess a so well developed accidental degeneracy of its ground states that the difference between the free energies of fluctuations does not lead to the stabilization of a particular vortex pattern down to zero temperature. Nonetheless, at low temperatures the system is characterized by a finite helicity modulus whose vanishing (at a finite temperature) is related with the dissociation of half-vortex pairs.
