Fluctuations and vortex pattern ordering in fully frustrated XY model with honeycomb lattice

The accidental degeneracy of various ground states in a fully frustrated XY model with a honeycomb lattice is shown to survive even when the free energy of the harmonic fluctuations is taken into account. The reason for that consists in the existence of a hidden gauge symmetry between the Hamiltonians describing the harmonic fluctuations in all these ground states. A particular vortex pattern is selected only when anharmonic fluctuations are taken into account. However, the observation of vortex ordering requires relatively large system size L>>100000.

Magnetoinductance of Josephson junction array with frozen vortex diffusion

The dependence of sheet impedance of a Josephson junction array on the applied magnetic field is investigated in the regime when vortex diffusion between array plaquettes is effectively frozen due to low enough temperature. The field dependent contribution to sheet inductance is found to be proportional to f*ln(1/f), where f<<1 is the magnitude of the field expressed in terms of flux quanta per plaquette.

Dimensional crossover and hidden incommensurability in Josephson junction arrays of periodically repeated Sierpinski gaskets

We report a study of overdamped Josephson junction arrays with the geometry of periodically repeated Sierpinski gaskets. These model superconductors share essential geometrical features with truly random (percolative) systems. When exposed to a perpendicular magnetic field B, their euclidian or fractal behavior depends on the relation between the intervortex distance (imposed by B) and the size of a constituent gasket, and was explored with high-resolution measurements of the sample magnetoinductance L(B). In terms of the frustration parameter f expressing (in units of the superconducting flux quantum) the magnetic flux threading an elementary triangular cell of a gasket, the crossover between the two regimes occurs at f_{cN}=1/(2*4^{N}), where N is the gasket order. In the fractal regime (f>f_{cN}) a sequence of equally spaced structures corresponding to the set of states with unit cells not larger than a single gasket is observed at multiples of f_{cN}, as predicted by theory. The fine structure of L(f) radically changes in the euclidian regime (f<f_{cN}), where it is determined by the commensurability of the vortex lattice with the effective potential created by the array. Anomalies observed in both the periodicity and the symmetry of L(f) are attributed to the effect of a hidden incommensurability, which arises from the deformation of the magnetic field distribution caused by the asymmetric diamagnetic response of the superconducting islands forming the arrays.

Analog of Kelvin-Helmholtz instability on superfluid liquid free surface

We analyse the analog of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability on free suface of a superfluid liquid. This instability is induced by the relative motion of superfluid and normal components of the same liquid along the surface. The instability threshold is found to be independent of the value of viscosity, but turns out to be lower than in absence of dissipation. The result is similar to that obtained for the interface between two sliding superfluids (with different mechanism of dissipation) and confirmed by the first experimental observation of the Kelvin-Helmholtz instability on the interface between A and B phases of superfluid helium-3 by Blaauwgeers et al. (cond-mat/0111343).

Kink pairs unbinding on domain walls and the sequence of phase transitions in fully frustrated XY models

The unbinding of kink pairs on domain walls in the fully frustrated XY model (on square or triangular lattices) is shown to induce the vanishing of phase coupling across the walls. This forces the phase transition, associated with unbinding of vortex pairs to take place at a lower temperature than the other phase transition, associated with proliferation of the Ising-type domain walls. The results are applicable for a description of superconducting junction arrays and wire networks in perpendicular magnetic field (corresponding to half-integer number of flux quanta per each lattice plaquette), as well as of planar antiferromagnets with a triangular lattice.

Fluctuation-dissipation theorem and flux noise in overdamped Josephson junction arrays

The form of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem for a resistively shunted Josephson juction array is derived with the help of the method which explicitely takes into acoount screening effects. This result is used to express the flux noise power spectrum in terms of frequency dependent sheet impedance of the array. The relation between noise amplitude and parameters of the detection coil is analysed for the simplest case of a single-loop coil.

Phase transitions in the antiferromagnetic XY model with a kagome lattice

The ground state of the antiferromagnetic XY model with a kagome lattice is characterized by a well developed accidental degeneracy. As a consequence the phase transition in this system consists in unbinding of pairs of fractional vortices. Addition of the next-to-nearest neighbors (NNN) interaction leads to stabilization of the long-range order in chirality (staggered chirality). We show that the phase transition, related with destruction of this long-range order, can happen as a separate phase transition below the temperature of the fractional vortex pairs unbinding only if the NNN coupling is extremely weak, and find how the temperature of this transition depends on coupling constants. We also demonstarte that the antiferromagnetic ordering of chiralities and, accordingly, the presence of the second phase transition are induced by the free energy of spin wave fluctuations even in absence of the NNN coupling.

Low frequency response of a collectively pinned vortex manifold

A low frequency dynamic response of a vortex manifold in type-II superconductor can be associated with thermally activated tunneling of large portions of the manifold between pairs of metastable states (two-level systems). We suggest that statistical properties of these states can be verified by using the same approach for the analysis of thermal fluctuations the behaviour of which is well known. We find the form of the response for the general case of vortex manifold with non-dispersive elastic moduli and for the case of thin superconducting film for which the compressibility modulus is always non-local.

Collective pinning of a frozen vortex liquid in ultrathin superconducting YBa_2Cu_3O_7 films

The linear dynamic response of the two-dimensional (2D) vortex medium in ultrathin YBa_2Cu_3O_7 films was studied by measuring their ac sheet impedance Z over a broad range of frequencies ω. With decreasing temperature the dissipative component of Z exhibits, at a temperature T*(ω) well above the melting temperature of a 2D vortex crystal, a crossover from a thermally activated regime involving single vortices to a regime where the response has features consistent with a description in terms of a collectively pinned vortex manifold. This suggests the idea of a vortex liquid which, below T*(ω), appears to be frozen at the time scales 1/ωof the experiments.

Vortex ordering in fully-frustrated superconducting systems with dice lattice

The structure and the degenracy of the ground state of a fully-frustrated XY-model are investigated for the case of a dice lattice geometry. The results are applicable for the description of Josephson junction arrays and thin superconducting wire networks in the external magnetic field providing half-integer number of flux quanta per plaquette. The mechanisms of disordering of vortex pattern in such systems are briefly discussed.

The fully frustrated XY model with next nearest neighbor interaction

We introduce a fully frustrated XY model with nearest neighbor (nn) and next nearest neighbor (nnn) couplings which can be realized in Josephson junction arrays. We study the phase diagram for $0\leq x \leq 1$ ($x$ is the ratio between nnn and nn couplings). When $x < 1/\sqrt{2}$ an Ising and a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions are present. Both critical temperatures decrease with increasing $x$. For $x > 1/\sqrt{2}$ the array undergoes a sequence of two transitions. On raising the temperature first the two sublattices decouple from each other and then, at higher temperatures, each sublattice becomes disorderd.

The Wandering Exponent of a One-Dimensional Directed Polymer in a Random Potential with Finite Correlation Radius

We consider a one-dimensional directed polymer in a random potential which is characterized by the Gaussian statistics with the finite size local correlations. It is shown that the well-known Kardar's solution obtained originally for a directed polymer with delta-correlated random potential can be applied for the description of the present system only in the high-temperature limit. For the low temperature limit we have obtained the new solution which is described by the one-step replica symmetry breaking. For the mean square deviation of the directed polymer of the linear size L it provides the usual scaling $L^{2z}$ with the wandering exponent z = 2/3 and the temperature-independent prefactor.

Parity Effect and Charge Binding Transition in Submicron Josephson Junction Arrays

We reconsider the issue of Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) transition into an insulating state in the Coulomb-dominated Josephson junction arrays. We show that previously predicted picture of the Cooper-pair BKT transtion at T = T_2 is valid only under the condition that T_2 is considerably below the parity-effect temperature (which is usually almost 10 times below the value of superconductive transition temperature), and even in this case it is not a rigorous phase transition but only a crossover, whereas the real phase transition takes place at T_1 = T_2/4. Our theory is in agreement with available experimental data on Coulomb-dominated Josephson arrays and also sheds some light on the origin of unusual reentrant temperature dependence of resistivity in the array with nearly-criticial ratio of Coulomb to Josephson energies.
