Spin-1 Hopfield model under a random field

The goal of the present work is to investigate the role of trivial disorder and nontrivial disorder in the three-state Hopfield model under a Gaussian random field. In order to control the nontrivial disorder, the Hebb interaction is used. This provides a way to control the system frustration by means of the parameter a=p/N, varying from trivial randomness to a highly frustrated regime, in the thermodynamic limit. We performed the thermodynamic analysis using the one-step replica-symmetry-breaking mean field theory to obtain the order parameters and phase diagrams for several strengths of a, the anisotropy constant, and the random field.

Specific heat of a non-local attractive Hubbard model

The specific heat of an attractive (interaction $G<0$) non-local Hubbard model is investigated. We use a two-pole approximation which leads to a set of correlation functions. In particular, the correlation function $\ <\vec{S}_i\cdot\vec{S}_j\ >$ plays an important role as a source of anomalies in the normal state of the model. Our results show that for a giving range of $G$ and $δ$ where $δ=1-n_T$ ($n_T=n_{\uparrow}+n_{\downarrow}$), the specific heat as a function of the temperature presents a two peak structure. Nevertehelesss, the presence of a pseudogap on the anti-nodal points $(0,\pmπ)$ and $(\pmπ,0)$ eliminates the two peak structure, the low temperature peak remaining. The effects of the second nearest neighbor hopping on the specific heat are also investigated.

Pseudogap and the specific heat of high $T_c$ superconductors

The specific heat of a two dimensional repulsive Hubbard model with local interaction is investigated. We use the two-pole approximation which exhibits explicitly important correlations that are sources of the pseudogap anomaly. The interplay between the specific heat and the pseudogap is the main focus of the present work. Our self consistent numerical results show that above the occupation $n_T\approx 0.85$, the specific heat starts to decrease due to the presence of a pseudogap in the density of states. We have also observed a two peak structure in the specific heat. Such structure is robust with respect to the Coulomb interaction $U$ but it is significantly affected by the occupation $n_T$. A detailed study of the two peak structure is carried out in terms of the renormalized quasi-particle bands. The role of the second nearest neighbor hopping on the specific heat behavior and on the pseudogap, is extensively discussed.

Inverse freezing in the Ghatak-Sherrington model with a random field

The present work studies the Ghatak-Sherrington (GS) model in the presence of a magnetic random field (RF). Previous results obtained from GS model without RF suggest that disorder and frustration are the key ingredients to produce spontaneous inverse freezing (IF). However, in this model, the effects of disorder and frustration always appear combined. In that sense, the introduction of RF allows us to study the IF under the effects of a disorder which is not a source of frustration. The problem is solved within the one step replica symmetry approximation. The results show that the first order transition between the spin glass and the paramagnetic phases, which is related to the IF for a certain range of crystal field $D$, is gradually suppressed when the RF is increased.

Superconductivity in an extended Hubbard model with attractive interaction

In this work, a two-dimensional one-band Hubbard model is investigated within a two-pole approximation. The model presents a non-local attractive potential $U (U<0)$ that allows the study of d-wave superconductivity and also includes hopping up to second-nearest-neighbors. The two-pole scheme has been proposed to improve the Hubbard-I approximation. The analytical results show a more complex form for the gap $Δ(T)$, when compared to the one obtained in the latter approximation. Indeed, new anomalous correlation functions associated with the superconductivity are involved in the calculation of $Δ(T)$. Numerical results in a range of temperatures are presented. Moreover, the structure of the quasiparticle bands and the topology of the Fermi surface are studied in detail in the normal state. Connections with some experimental results are also included.

Spectral Function of a $d-p$ Hubbard Model

This work investigates a d-p Hubbard model by the n-pole approximation in the hole-doped regime. In particular, the spectral function $A(ω,\vec{k})$ is analyzed varying the filling, the local Coulomb interaction and the $d-p$ hybridization. It should be remarked that the original n-pole approximation (Phys. Rev. 184 (1969) 451) has been improved in order to include adequately the $\vec{k}$-dependence of the important correlation function $< \vec{S}_j\cdot\vec{S}_i>$ present in the poles of the Green's functions. It has been verified that the topology of the Fermi surface (defined by $A(ω=0,\vec{k})$) is deeply affected by the doping, the strength of the Coulomb interaction and also by the hybridization. Particularly, in the underdoped regime, the spectral function $A(ω=0,\vec{k})$ presents very low intensity close to the anti-nodal points $(0,\pm π)$ and $(\pm π,0)$. Such a behavior produces an anomalous Fermi surface (pockets) with pseudogaps in the region of the anti-nodal points. On the other hand, if the $d-p$ hybridization is enhanced sufficiently, such pseudogaps vanish. It is precisely the correlation function $< \vec{S}_j\cdot\vec{S}_i>$ present in the poles of the Green's functions which plays the important role in the underdoped situation. In fact, antiferromagnetic correlations coming from $< \vec{S}_j\cdot\vec{S}_i>$ strongly modify the quasi-particle band structure. This is the ultimate source of anomalies in the Fermi surface in the present approach.

Fermionic van Hemmen Spin Glass Model with a Transverse Field

In the present work it is studied the fermionic van Hemmen model for the spin glass (SG) with a transverse magnetic field $Γ$. In this model, the spin operators are written as a bilinear combination of fermionic operators, which allows the analysis of the interplay between charge and spin fluctuations in the presence of a quantum spin flipping mechanism given by $Γ$. The problem is expressed in the fermionic path integral formalism. As results, magnetic phase diagrams of temperature versus the ferromagnetic interaction are obtained for several values of chemical potential $μ$ and $Γ$. The $Γ$ field suppresses the magnetic orders. The increase of $μ$ alters the average occupation per site that affects the magnetic phases. For instance, the SG and the mixed SG+ferromagnetic phases are also suppressed by $μ$. In addition, $μ$ can change the nature of the phase boundaries introducing a first order transition.

A van Hemmen-Kondo model for disordered strongly correlated electron systems

We present here a theoretical model in order to describe the competition between the Kondo effect and the spin glass behavior. The spin glass part of the starting Hamiltonian contains Ising spins with an intersite exchange interaction given by the local van Hemmen model, while the Kondo effect is described as usual by the intrasite exchange $J_K$. We obtain, for large $J_K$ values, a Kondo phase and, for smaller $J_K$ values, a succession, with decreasing

Inverse freezing in the Hopfield Fermionic Ising Spin Glass

In this work it is studied the Hopfield fermionic spin glass model which allows interpolating from trivial randomness to a highly frustrated regime. Therefore, it is possible to investigate whether or not frustration is an essential ingredient which would allow this magnetic disordered model to present naturally inverse freezing by comparing the two limits, trivial randomness and highly frustrated regime and how different levels of frustration could affect such unconventional phase transition. The problem is expressed in the path integral formalism where the spin operators are represented by bilinear combinations of Grassmann variables. The Grand Canonical Potential is obtained within the static approximation and one-step replica symmetry breaking scheme. As a result, phase diagrams temperature {\it versus} the chemical potential are obtained for several levels of frustration. Particularly, when the level of frustration is diminished, the reentrance related to the inverse freezing is gradually suppressed.

Stability conditions for fermionic Ising spin-glass models in the presence of a transverse field

The stability of spin-glass (SG) phase is analyzed in detail for a fermionic Ising SG (FISG) model in the presence of a magnetic transverse field $Γ$. The fermionic path integral formalism, replica method and static approach have been used to obtain the thermodynamic potential within one step replica symmetry breaking ansatz. The replica symmetry (RS) results show that the SG phase is always unstable against the replicon. Moreover, the two other eigenvalues $λ_{\pm}$ of the Hessian matrix (related to the diagonal elements of the replica matrix) can indicate an additional instability to the SG phase, which enhances when $Γ$ is increased. Therefore, this result suggests that the study of the replicon can not be enough to guarantee the RS stability in the present quantum FISG model, especially near the quantum critical point. In particular, the FISG model allows changing the occupation number of sites, so one can get a first order transition when the chemical potential exceeds a certain value. In this region, the replicon and the $λ_{\pm}$ indicate instability problems for the SG solution close to all range of first order boundary.

Role of the transverse field in inverse freezing in the fermionic Ising spin-glass model

We investigate the inverse freezing in the fermionic Ising spin-glass (FISG) model in a transverse field $Γ$. The grand canonical potential is calculated in the static approximation, replica symmetry and one-step replica symmetry breaking Parisi scheme. It is argued that the average occupation per site $n$ is strongly affected by $Γ$. As consequence, the boundary phase is modified and, therefore, the reentrance associated with the inverse freezing is modified too.

One-step replica symmetry breaking solution for a highly asymmetric two-sublattice fermionic Ising spin glass model in a transverse field

The one-step replica symmetry breaking (RSB) is used to study a two-sublattice fermionic infinite-range Ising spin glass (SG) model in a transverse field $Γ$. The problem is formulated in a Grassmann path integral formalism within the static approximation. In this model, a parallel magnetic field $H$ breaks the symmetry of the sublattices. It destroys the antiferromagnetic (AF) order, but it can favor the nonergodic mixed phase (SG+AF) characterizing an asymmetric RSB region. In this region, intra-sublattice disordered interactions $V$ increase the difference between the RSB solutions of each sublattice. The freezing temperature shows a higher increase with $H$ when $V$ enhances. A discontinue phase transition from the replica symmetry (RS) solution to the RSB solution can appear with the presence of an intra-sublattice ferromagnetic average coupling. The $Γ$ field introduces a quantum spin flip mechanism that suppresses the magnetic orders leading them to quantum critical points. Results suggest that the quantum effects are not able to restore the RS solution. However, in the asymmetric RSB region, $Γ$ can produce a stable RS solution at any finite temperature for a particular sublattice while the other sublattice still presents RSB solution for the special case in which only the intra-sublattice spins couple with disordered interactions.

Effects of the Hybridization on the Fermi Surface of an Extended $d-p$ Hubbard Model

The Fermi surface (FS) of an extended $d-p$ Hubbard model is investigated by a two-pole approximation in both situations with hole and electron doping. Using the factorization procedure proposed by Beenen and Edwards, superconductivity with singlet $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave pairing is considered. The effects of the $d-p$ hybridization on the FS are the main focus in the present work. Nevertheless, the asymmetries between the hole- and electron-doped regimes and the effects of doping and Coulomb interaction on FS are also investigated. Particularly, it is shown that the crossover from hole-like to electron-like FS is deeply affected by the $d-p$ hybridization in the hole-doped case. It has been verified that the effect of the hybridization is very pronounced around the saddle points $(0,\pmπ)$ and $(\pmπ,0)$, where the intensity of the superconducting order parameter is maximum in the particular case of $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave symmetry. In the electron-doped case, the crossover in the FS is not verified. The doping dependence of the FS topology in the hole- and electron-doped regimes is in agreement with recent experimental ARPES results for La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$ (hole doping) and Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ (electron doping).

Spin Glass and ferromagnetism in disordered Cerium compounds

The competition between spin glass, ferromagnetism and Kondo effect is analysed here in a Kondo lattice model with an inter-site random coupling $J_{ij}$ between the localized magnetic moments given by a generalization of the Mattis model which represents an interpolation between ferromagnetism and a highly disordered spin glass. Functional integral techniques with Grassmann fields have been used to obtain the partition function. The static approximation and the replica symmetric ansatz have also been used. The solution of the problem is presented as a phase diagram giving $T/{J}$ {\it versus} $J_K/J$ where $T$ is the temperature, $J_{K}$ and ${J}$ are the strengths of the intrasite Kondo and the intersite random couplings, respectively. If $J_K/{J}$ is small, when temperature is decreased, there is a second order transition from a paramagnetic to a spin glass phase. For lower $T/{J}$, a first order transition appears between the spin glass phase and a region where there are Mattis states which are thermodynamically equivalent to the ferromagnetism. For very low ${T/{J}}$, the Mattis states become stable. On the other hand, it is found as solution a Kondo state for large $J_{K}/{J}$ values. These results can improve the theoretical description of the well known experimental phase diagram of $CeNi_{1-x}Cu_{x}$.

Antiferromagnetic Ising spin glass competing with BCS pairing interaction in a transverse field

The competition among spin glass (SG), antiferromagnetism (AF) and local pairing superconductivity (PAIR) is studied in a two-sublattice fermionic Ising spin glass model with a local BCS pairing interaction in the presence of an applied magnetic transverse field $Γ$. In the present approach, spins in different sublattices interact with a Gaussian random coupling with an antiferromagnetic mean $J_0$ and standard deviation $J$. The problem is formulated in the path integral formalism in which spin operators are represented by bilinear combinations of Grassmann variables. The saddle-point Grand Canonical potential is obtained within the static approximation and the replica symmetric ansatz. The results are analysed in phase diagrams in which the AF and the SG phases can occur for small $g$ ($g$ is the strength of the local superconductor coupling written in units of $J$), while the PAIR phase appears as unique solution for large $g$. However, there is a complex line transition separating the PAIR phase from the others. It is second order at high temperature that ends in a tricritical point. The quantum fluctuations affect deeply the transition lines and the tricritical point due to the presence of $Γ$.

One-step replica symmetry breaking solution for fermionic Ising spin glass in a transverse field

The fermionic Ising spin glass models in a transverse field are investigated in a Grassmann path integral formalism. The Parisi's scheme of one-step replica symmetry breaking (RSB) is used within the static ansatz. This formalism has already been applied in a theory in which $m$ (Parisi's block-size parameter) is taken as a constant (PRB 72, 014447 (2005)). Now, it is extended to consider $m$ as a variational parameter. In this case, the results show that RSB is present when $T\to0$, in which the system is driven by quantum fluctuations.

Quantum critical point in the spin glass-antiferromagnetism competition in Kondo-lattice systems

A theory is proposed to describe the competition among antiferromagnetism (AF), spin glass (SG) and Kondo effect. The model describes two Kondo sublattices with an intrasite Kondo interaction strength $J_{K}$ and an interlattice quantum Ising interaction in the presence of a transverse field $Γ$. The interlattice coupling is a random Gaussian distributed variable (with average $-2J_0/N$ and variance $32 J^{2}/N$) while the $Γ$ field is introduced as a quantum mechanism to produce spin flipping. The path integral formalism is used to study this fermionic problem where the spin operators are represented by bilinear combinations of Grassmann fields. The disorder is treated within the framework of the replica trick. The free energy and the order parameters of the problem are obtained by using the static ansatz and by choosing both $J_0/J$ and $Γ/J \approx (J_k/J)^2$ to allow, as previously, a better comparison with the experimental findings. The results indicate the presence of a SG solution at low $J_K/J$ and for temperature $T<T_{f}$ ($T_{f}$ is the freezing temperature). When $J_K/J$ is increased, a mixed phase AF+SG appears, then an AF solution and finally a Kondo state is obtained for high values of $J_{K}/J$. Moreover, the behaviors of the freezing and Neel temperatures are also affected by the relationship between $J_{K}$ and the transverse field $Γ$. The first one presents a slight decrease while the second one decreases towards a Quantum Critical Point (QCP). The obtained phase diagram has the same sequence as the experimental one for $Ce_{2}Au_{1-x}Co_{x}Si_{3}$, if $J_{K}$ is assumed to increase with $x$, and in addition, it also shows a qualitative agreement concerning the behavior of the freezing and the Neel temperatures.

The spin glass-antiferromagnetism competition in Kondo-lattice systems in the presence of a transverse applied magnetic field

A theory is proposed to describe the competition among antiferromagnetism (AF), spin glass (SG) and Kondo effect. The model describes two Kondo sublattices with an intrasite Kondo interaction strength $J_{K}$ and a random Gaussian interlattice interaction in the presence of a transverse field $Γ$. The $Γ$ field is introduced as a quantum mechanism to produce spin flipping and the random coupling has average $-2J_0/N$ and variance $32 J^{2}/N$. The path integral formalism with Grassmann fields is used to study this fermionic problem, in which the disorder is treated within the framework of the replica trick. The free energy and the order parameters are obtained using the static ansatz. In this many parameters problem, we choose $J_0/J \approx (J_{K}/J)^{2}$ and $Γ/J \approx (J_{K}/J)^{2}$ to allow a better comparison with the experimental findings. The obtained phase diagram has not only the same sequence as the experimental one for $Ce_{2}Au_{1-x}Co_{x}Si_{3}$, but mainly, it also shows a qualitative agreement concerning the behavior of the freezing temperature and the Neel temperature which decreases until a Quantum Critical Point (QCP).
