Excitation of the isomeric ^{229m}Th nuclear state via an electronic bridge process in ^{229}Th^+

We consider the excitation of the nuclear transition ^{229g}Th - ^{229m}Th near 7.6 eV in singly ionized thorium via an electronic bridge process. The process relies on the excitation of the electron shell by two laser photons whose sum frequency is equal to the nuclear transition frequency. This scheme allows to determine the nuclear transition frequency with high accuracy. Based on calculations of the electronic level structure of Th^+ which combine the configuration-interaction method and many-body perturbation theory, we estimate that a nuclear excitation rate in the range of 10 s^{-1} can be obtained using conventional laser sources.

Comment on "21-cm Radiation: A New Probe of Variation in the Fine-Structure Constant"

Khatri and Wandelt reported that change in the value of alpha by 1% changes the mean brightness temperature $T_b$ decrement of the CMB due to 21 cm absorption by 5% over the redshift range z $<$ 50. A drawback of their approach is that the dimensionful parameters are used. Changing of units leads to the change of the magnitude and even sign of the effect. Similar problems may be identified in a large number of other publications which consider limits on the variation of alpha using dimentionful parameters. We propose a method to obtain consistent results and provide an estimate of the effect.

Electronic bridge process in 229Th^+

We have studied the effect of atomic electrons on the nuclear transition from the isomeric {229m}Th state to the ground {229g}Th state in {229}Th+ due to the electronic bridge process. The exact value of the nuclear transition frequency is unknown so far; therefore, we have developed a formalism that can be used for any nuclear transition frequency. We have calculated positions of several high-lying even-parity states which are not presented in experimental atomic spectra databases. We have found their energy levels and g factors.

Effect of atomic electrons on 7.6 eV nuclear transition in $^{229}$Th$^{3+}$

We have considered an effect of atomic electrons due to the electronic bridge process on the nuclear $^{229m}$Th -- $^{229g}$Th transition in ^{229}$Th$^{3+}$. Based on a recent experimental result we assumed the energy difference between the isomeric and the ground nuclear states to be equal to 7.6 eV. We have calculated the ratios of the electronic bridge process probability Gamma_EB to the probability of the nuclear radiative transition (Gamma_N) for the electronic 5f_5/2 --> 6d_3/2,6d_5/2,7s and the 7s --> 7p_1/2,7p_3/2 transitions and found Gamma_EB/Gamma_N ~ 0.01-0.1 for the former and Gamma_EB/Gamma_N ~ 20 for the latter.

Enhanced sensitivity to the fine-structure constant variation in Th IV atomic clock transition

Our calculations have shown that the 5f_5/2-7s_1/2 23131 cm^{-1} transition from the ground state in the ion Th^{3+} is very sensitive to the temporal variation of the fine structure constant alpha (q=-75300 cm^{-1}). The line is very narrow, the ion has been trapped and laser cooled and the positive shifter line 5f_5/2-5f_7/2 4325 cm^{-1} (q=+2900 cm^{-1}) may be used as a reference. A comparison may also be made with a positive shifter in another atom or ion. This makes Th^{3+} a good candidate to search for the alpha variation.

Transition frequency shifts with fine-structure constant variation for Yb II

In this paper we report calculations of the relativistic corrections to transition frequencies (q factors) of Yb II for the transitions from the odd-parity states to the metastable state $4f^{13}6s^2 ^2F_{7/2}^o$. These transitions are of particular interest experimentally since they possess some of the largest q factors calculated to date and the $^2F_{7/2}^o$ state can be prepared with high efficiency. This makes Yb II a very attractive candidate for the laboratory search for variation of the fine-structure constant alpha.

Calculation of P,T-odd electric dipole moments for diamagnetic atoms $^{129}$Xe, $^{171}$Yb, $^{199}$Hg, $^{211}$Rn, and $^{225}$Ra

Electric dipole moments of diamagnetic atoms of experimental interest are calculated using the relativistic Hartree-Fock and random-phase approximation methods, the many-body perturbation theory and configuration interaction technique. We consider P,T-odd interactions which give rise to atomic electric dipole moment in the second order of the perturbation theory. These include nuclear Schiff moment, P,T-odd electron-nucleon interaction and electron electric dipole moment. Interpretation of a new experimental constraint of a permanent electric dipole moment of $^{199}$Hg [W. C. Griffith {\it et al.}, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 102}, 101601 (2009)] is discussed.

A proposed experimental method to determine $α$-sensitivity of splitting between ground and 7.6 eV isomeric states in Th-229

The 7.6 eV electromagnetic transition between the nearly degenerate ground state and first excited state in the Th-229 nucleus may be very sensitive to potential changes in the fine-structure constant, $α= e^2/\hbar c$. However, the sensitivity is not known, and nuclear calculations are currently unable to determine it. We propose measurements of the differences of atomic transition frequencies between thorium atoms (or ions) with the nucleus in the ground state and in the first excited (isomeric) state. This will enable extraction of the change in nuclear charge radius and electric quadrupole moment between the isomers, and hence the $α$-dependence of the isomeric transition frequency with reasonable accuracy.

Precision determination of electroweak coupling from atomic parity violation and implications for particle physics

We carry out high-precision calculation of parity violation in cesium atom, reducing theoretical uncertainty by a factor of two compared to previous evaluations. We combine previous measurements with our calculations and extract the weak charge of the 133Cs nucleus, Q_W = -73.16(29)_exp(20)_th. The result is in agreement with the Standard Model (SM) of elementary particles. This is the most accurate to-date test of the low-energy electroweak sector of the SM. In combination with the results of high-energy collider experiments, we confirm the energy-dependence (or "running") of the electroweak force over an energy range spanning four orders of magnitude (from ~10 MeV to ~100 GeV). Additionally, our result places constraints on a variety of new physics scenarios beyond the SM. In particular, we increase the lower limit on the masses of extra $Z$-bosons predicted by models of grand unification and string theories.

Accurate calculations of Sr properties for a high-accuracy optical clock

We have carried out calculations towards the goal of reducing the inaccuracy of the Sr optical atomic clock to 1$\times10^{-17}$ and below. We calculated a.c. polarizabilities of the $5s^2 ^1S_0$ and $5s5p ^3P_0^o$ clock states that are important for reducing the uncertainty of blackbody radiation-induced frequency shifts for the $^1S_0 - ^3P_0^o$ clock transition. We determined four low-lying even-parity states whose total contribution to the static polarizability of the $^3P_0^o$ clock state is at the level of 90%. We show that if the contribution of these states is experimentally known with 0.1% accuracy, the same accuracy can be achieved for the total polarizability of the $^3P_0^o$ state. The corresponding uncertainty for the blackbody shift at a fixed room temperature will be below 1$\times10^{-17}$. The calculations are confirmed by a number of experimental measurements on various Sr properties.

Convergence of all-order many-body methods: coupled-cluster study for Li

We present and analyze results of the relativistic coupled-cluster calculation of energies, hyperfine constants, and dipole matrix elements for the $2s$, $2p_{1/2}$, and $2p_{3/2}$ states of Li atom. The calculations are complete through the fourth order of many-body perturbation theory for energies and through the fifth order for matrix elements and subsume certain chains of diagrams in all orders. A nearly complete many-body calculation allows us to draw conclusions on the convergence pattern of the coupled-cluster method. Our analysis suggests that the high-order many-body contributions to energies and matrix elements scale proportionally and provides a quantitative ground for semi-empirical fits of {\em ab inito} matrix elements to experimental energies.

Mid- and far-infrared fine-structure line sensitivities to hypothetical variability of the fine-structure constant

Sensitivity coefficients to temporal variation of the fine-structure constant alpha for transitions between the fine-structure (FS) sub-levels of the ground states of C I, Si I, S I, Ti I, Fe I, N II, Fe II, O III, S III, Ar III, Fe III, Mg V, Ca V, Na VI, Fe VI, Mg VII, Si VII, Ca VII, Fe VII, and Si IX are calculated. These transitions lie in the mid- and far-infrared regions and can be observed in spectra of high-redshift quasars and infrared bright galaxies with active galactic nuclei. Using FS transitions to study alpha-variation over cosmological timescale allows to improve the limit on $|Δα/α|$ by several times as compared to contemporaneous optical observations ($|Δα/α| < 10^{-5}$), and to suppress considerably systematic errors of the radial velocity measurements caused by the Doppler noise. Moreover, the far infrared lines can be observed at redshifts z > 10, far beyond the range accessible to optical observations (z < 4). We have derived a simple analytical expression which relates the FS intervals and the sensitivity of the FS transitions to the change of alpha.

A new approach for testing variations of fundamental constants over cosmic epochs using FIR fine-structure lines

Aims. To obtain limits on the variation of the fine-structure constant alpha and the electron-to-proton mass ratio mu over different cosmological epochs. Methods. A new approach based on the comparison of redshifts of far infrared (FIR) fine-structure lines and low-lying rotational transitions in CO is proposed which is in principle more sensitive by a factor of 10 compared to QSO metal absorption lines. Results. Estimations of the quotient F = alpha^2/mu obtained for two distant quasars J1148+5251 (z = 6.42) and BR1202-0725 (z = 4.69) provide Delta F/F = (0.1+/-1.0)10^{-4} and (1.4+/-1.5)10^{-4}, respectively. The obtained limits are consistent with no variation of physical constants at the level of 0.01% over a period of 13 Gyr. Conclusions. Upcoming observations of quasars and distant galaxies in FIR fine-structure lines of different species and in CO low rotational lines at the SOFIA, HSO, and ALMA are expected to improve the current limit by, at least, an order of magnitude.

Trapping of Neutral Mercury Atoms and Prospects for Optical Lattice Clocks

We report a vapor-cell magneto-optical trapping of Hg isotopes on the ${}^1S_0-{}^3P_1$ intercombination transition. Six abundant isotopes, including four bosons and two fermions, were trapped. Hg is the heaviest non-radioactive atom trapped so far, which enables sensitive atomic searches for ``new physics'' beyond the standard model. We propose an accurate optical lattice clock based on Hg and evaluate its systematic accuracy to be better than $10^{-18}$. Highly accurate and stable Hg-based clocks will provide a new avenue for the research of optical lattice clocks and the time variation of the fine-structure constant.

Transition frequency shifts with fine structure constant variation for Fe II: Breit and core-valence correlation correction

Transition frequencies of Fe II ion are known to be very sensitive to variation of the fine structure constant α. The resonance absorption lines of Fe II from objects at cosmological distances are used in a search for the possible variation of αin cause of cosmic time. In this paper we calculated the dependence of the transition frequencies on α^2 (q-factors) for Fe II ion. We found corrections to these coefficients from valence-valence and core-valence correlations and from the Breit interaction. Both the core-valence correlation and Breit corrections to the q-factors appeared to be larger than had been anticipated previously. Nevertheless our calculation confirms that the Fe II absorption lines seen in quasar spectra have large q-factors of both signs and thus the ion Fe II alone can be used in the search for the α-variation at different cosmological epochs.

Calculation of nuclear spin-dependent parity-nonconserving amplitude for (7s,F=4) --> (7s,F=5) transition in Fr

Many-body calculation of nuclear spin-dependent parity-nonconserving amplitude for (7s,F=4) --> (7s,F=5) transition between hyperfine sublevels of the ground state of $^{211}$Fr is carried out. The final result is <7s,F=5 ||d_PNC|| 7s,F=4> = -0.49 10^{-10} i kappa a.u., where kappa is the dimensionless coupling constant. This is approximately an order of magnitude larger than similar amplitude in Cs. The dominant contribution to kappa is associated with the anapole moment of the nucleus.

High accuracy calculation of 6s -> 7s parity nonconserving amplitude in Cs

We calculated the parity nonconserving (PNC) 6s -> 7s amplitude in Cs. In the Dirac-Coulomb approximation our result is in a good agreement with other calculations. Breit corrections to the PNC amplitude and to the Stark-induced amplitude $β$ are found to be -0.4% and -1% respectively. The weak charge of $^{133}$Cs is $Q_W=-72.5 \pm 0.7$ in agreement with the standard model.
