Atomic properties of Cd-like and Sn-like ions for the development of frequency standards and search for the variation of the fine-structure constant

A high-precision relativistic calculations of Cd-like Nd$^{12+}$, Sm$^{14+}$ and Sn-like Pr$^{9+}$, Nd$^{10+}$ atomic properties is carried out using an approach that combines configuration interaction and a linearized coupled-cluster method. These ions have long-lived metastable states with transitions accessible by laser excitations, relatively simple electronic structure, high sensitivity to $α$ variation, and stable isotopes. Breit and QED corrections were included into the calculations. Energies, transition wavelengths, electric- and magnetic-multipole reduced matrix elements, lifetimes, and sensitivity coefficients $q$ and $K$ to the variation of the fine-structure constant $α$ were obtained. A detailed study of uncertainties was performed. Energies for similar Cd-like Ba$^{8+}$, La$^{9+}$, Ce$^{10+}$, Pr$^{11+}$ and Sn-like Ba$^{6+}$ ions were calculated and compared with experiment for further tests of the accuracy.

Relativistic calculations of $C_6$ and $C_8$ coefficients for strontium dimers

The electric dipole and quadrupole polarizabilities of the $5s5p~^3\!P_1^o$ state and the $C_6$ and $C_8$ coefficients for the $^1\!S_0 +\, ^1\!S_0$ and $^1\!S_0 +\, ^3\!P_1^o$ dimers of strontium are calculated using a high-precision relativistic approach that combines configuration interaction and linearized coupled-cluster methods. Our recommended values of the long range dispersion coefficients for the $0_u$ and $1_u$ energy levels are $C_6(0_u)=3771(32)$ a.u. and $C_6(1_u)= 4001(33)$ a.u., respectively. They are in good agreement with recent results from experimental photoassociation data. We also calculate $C_8$ coefficients for Sr dimers, which are needed for precise determination of long-range interaction potential. We confirm the experimental value for the magic wavelength, where the Stark shift on the $^1\!S_0$-$^3\!P_1^o$ transition vanishes. The accuracy of calculations is analyzed and uncertainties are assigned to all quantities reported in this work.

Study of highly-charged Ag-like and In-like ions for the development of atomic clocks and search for $α$-variation

We carried out detailed high-precision study of Ag-like Nd$^{13+}$, Sm$^{15+}$ and In-like Ce$^{9+}$, Pr$^{10+}$, Nd$^{11+}$, Sm$^{13+}$, Eu$^{14+}$ highly-charged ions. These ions were identified to be of particular interest to the development of ultra-accurate atomic clocks, search for variation of the fine-structure constant $α$, and quantum information [Safronova et. al. Phys. Rev. Lett. 113, 030801 (2014)]. Relativistic linearized coupled-cluster method was used for Ag-like ion calculations, and a hybrid approach that combines configuration interaction and a variant of the coupled-cluster method was used for the In-like ion calculations. Breit and QED corrections were included. Energies, transition wavelengths, electric-dipole, electric-quadrupole, electric-octupole, magnetic-dipole, magnetic-quadrupole, magnetic-octupole reduced matrix elements, lifetimes, and sensitivity coefficients to $α$-variation were calculated. Detailed study of various contributions was carried out to evaluate uncertainties of the final results. Energies for several similar "reference" ions, where the experimental values are available were calculated and compared with experiment for further tests of the accuracy.

Highly-charged ions for atomic clocks, quantum information, and search for $α$-variation

We propose 10 highly-charged ions as candidates for the development of next generation atomic clocks, quantum information, and search for $α$-variation. They have long-lived metastable states with transition frequencies to the ground state between 170-3000 nm, relatively simple electronic structure, stable isotopes and high sensitivity to $α$-variation (e.g., Sm$^{14+}$, Pr$^{10+}$, Sm$^{13+}$, Nd$^{10+}$). We predict their properties crucial for the experimental exploration and highlight particularly attractive systems for these applications.

Relativistic many-body calculations of van der Waals coefficients for Yb-Li and Yb-Rb dimers

We derive the relativistic formulas for the van der Waals coefficients of Yb-alkali dimers that correlate to ground and excited separated-atom limits. We calculate $C_6$ and $C_8$ coefficients of particular experimental interest. We also derive a semi-empirical formula that expresses the $C_8$ coefficient of heteronuclear $A+B$ dimers in terms of the $C_6$ and $C_8$ coefficients of homonuclear dimers and the static dipole and quadrupole polarizabilities of the atomic states $A$ and $B$. We report results of calculation of the $C_6$ coefficients for the Yb-Rb $^3/!P_1^o+5s\, ^2/!S_{1/2}$ and $^1/!S_0+5p\, ^2/!P^o_{1/2}$ dimers, and the $C_8$ coefficients for the Yb-Li $^1/!S_0+2s\, ^2/!S_{1/2}$ and Yb-Rb $^1/!S_0+5s\, ^2/!S_{1/2}$ dimers. Uncertainties are estimated for all predicted properties.

Long range interactions of ytterbium in mixed quantum gases

We present methods for accurate evaluation of van der Waals coefficients of dimers with excited atoms that have a strong decay channel. We calculate C_6 coefficients for the Yb-Yb 1S_0+ 3P_{0,1}, 3P_0+3P_0 and Yb-Rb 3P_1+5s, 1S_0+ 5p_{1/2} dimers and C_8 coefficients for the Yb-Yb 1S_0+1S_0, 1S_0+3P_1 and Yb-Rb 1S_0+5s dimers. We evaluate uncertainties of all properties.

Long range interaction coefficients for ytterbium dimers

We evaluate the electric-dipole and electric-quadrupole static and dynamic polarizabilities for the 6s^2 ^1S_0, 6s6p ^3P_0, and 6s6p ^3P_1 states and estimate their uncertainties. A methodology is developed for an accurate evaluation of the van der Waals coefficients of dimers involving excited state atoms with strong decay channel to the ground state. This method is used for evaluation of the long range interaction coefficients of particular experimental interest, including the C_6 coefficients for the Yb-Yb ^1S_0+^3P_{0,1} and ^3P_0+^3P_0 dimers and C_8 coefficients for the ^1S_0+^1S_0 and ^1S_0+^3P_1 dimers.

Polarizabilities, Stark shifts, and lifetimes of In atom

We evaluate the polarizabilities of the 5p_{1/2}, 6s, 6p_{1/2}, and 6p_{3/2} states of In using two different high-precision relativistic methods: linearized coupled-cluster approach where single, double and partial triple excitations of the Dirac-Fock wave function are included to all orders of perturbation theory and an approach that combines the configuration interaction and the coupled-cluster method. Extensive comparison of the accuracy of these methods is carried out. The uncertainties of all recommended values are evaluated. Our result for the 6s-5p_{1/2} Stark shift is in excellent agreement with the recent measurement [Ranjit et al., arXiv:1302.0821v1]. Combining our calculation with this precision measurement allows us to infer the values of the 6p_{1/2} and 6p_{3/2} lifetimes in In with 0.8% accuracy. Our predictions for the 6p_{3/2} scalar and tensor polarizabilities may be combined with the future measurement of the 6s-6p_{3/2} Stark shift to accurately determine the lifetimes of the 5d_j states.

Blackbody radiation shift in the Sr optical atomic clock

We evaluated the static and dynamic polarizabilities of the 5s^2 ^1S_0 and 5s5p ^3P_0^o states of Sr using the high-precision relativistic configuration interaction + all-order method. Our calculation explains the discrepancy between the recent experimental 5s^2 ^1S_0 - 5s5p ^3P_0^o dc Stark shift measurement Δα= 247.374(7) a.u. [Middelmann et. al, arXiv:1208.2848 (2012)] and the earlier theoretical result of 261(4) a.u. [Porsev and Derevianko, Phys. Rev. A 74, 020502R (2006)]. Our present value of 247.5 a.u. is in excellent agreement with the experimental result. We also evaluated the dynamic correction to the BBR shift with 1 % uncertainty; -0.1492(16) Hz. The dynamic correction to the BBR shift is unusually large in the case of Sr (7 %) and it enters significantly into the uncertainty budget of the Sr optical lattice clock. We suggest future experiments that could further reduce the present uncertainties.

Ytterbium in quantum gases and atomic clocks: van der Waals interactions and blackbody shifts

We evaluated the C_6 coefficients of Yb-Yb and Yb -alkali/group II van der Waals interactions with 2% uncertainty. The only existing results for such quantities are for the Yb-Yb dimer. Our value, C_6=1929(39) a.u., is in excellent agreement with the recent experimental determination of 1932(35) a.u. We have also developed a new approach for the calculation of the dynamic correction to the blackbody radiation shift. We have calculated this quantity for the Yb 6s^2 ^1S_0 - 6s6p ^3P_0 clock transition with 3.5% uncertainty. This reduces the fractional uncertainty due to the blackbody radiation shift in the Yb optical clock at 300 K to 10^{-18} level.

Study of the correlation effects in Yb^+ and implications for parity violation

Calculation of the energies, magnetic dipole hyperfine structure constants, E1 transition amplitudes between the low-lying states, and nuclear spin-dependent parity-nonconserving amplitudes for the ^2S_{1/2} - ^2D_{3/2,5/2} transitions in ^{171}Yb^+ ion is performed using two different approaches. First, we carried out many-body perturbation theory calculation considering Yb^+ as a monovalent system. Additional all-order calculations are carried out for selected properties. Second, we carried out configuration interaction calculation considering Yb as a 15-electron system and compared the results obtained by two methods. The accuracy of different methods is evaluated. We find that the monovalent description is inadequate for evaluation of some atomic properties due to significant mixing of the one-particle and the hole-two-particle configurations. Performing the calculation by such different approaches allowed us to establish the importance of various correlation effects for Yb^+ atomic properties for future improvement of theoretical precision in this complicated system.

Polarizabilities of Si^{2+}: a benchmark test of theory and experiment

We have calculated electric-dipole polarizabilities of the 3s^2 ^1S_0, 3s3p ^3P_0, and 3s3p ^1P_1 states of the Si^{2+} ion using recently developed configuration interaction + all-order method. Detailed evaluation of the uncertainties of the final results is carried out. Our value for the ground state electric-dipole polarizability 11.670(13) a.u. is in excellent agreement with the resonant excitation Stark ionization spectroscopy value 11.669(9) a.u. [Komara et al., J. Phys. B 38, 87 (2005); Mitroy, Phys. Rev. A 78, 052515 (2008)]. This work represents the most precise benchmark test to date of theory and experiment in divalent atoms. The near cancellation of the ns^2 ^1S_0 ground state and the lowest nsnp ^3P_0 polarizabilities previously observed in B+, Al+, In+, Tl+, and Pb^{2+} is also found in Si^{2+} ion.

Study of quadrupole polarizabilities with combined configuration interaction and coupled-cluster method

The recently developed method combining the configuration interaction and the coupled-cluster method was demonstrated to provide accurate treatment of correlation corrections in divalent atomic systems [M.S.Safronova, M.G.Kozlov, and C.W.Clark, Phys. Rev. Lett. 107, 143006 (2011)]. We have extended this approach to the calculation of quadrupole polarizabilities alpha_2 and applied it to evaluate alpha_2 for the ground state of Mg and Mg-like Si^{2+}. Performing the calculations in three different approximations of increasing accuracy allowed us to place the upper bounds on the uncertainty of the final results. The recommended values alpha_2(3s^2 1S0)= 35.86(13) a.u. for Si^{2+} and alpha_2(3s^2 1S0)= 814(3) a.u. for Mg are estimated to be accurate to 0.37%. Differences in quadrupole polarizability contributions in neutral Mg and Si^{2+} ion are discussed.

Electric dipole moment enhancement factor of thallium

The goal of this work is to resolve the present controversy in the value of the EDM enhancement factor of Tl. We have carried out several calculations by different high-precision methods, studied previously omitted corrections, as well as tested our methodology on other parity conserving quantities. We find the EDM enhancement factor of Tl to be equal to -573(20). This value is 20% larger than the recently published result of Nataraj et al. [Phys. Rev. Lett. 106, 200403 (2011)], but agrees very well with several earlier results.

Sensitivity of the isotopologues of hydronium to variation of the electron-to-proton mass ratio

We study the sensitivity of the microwave and submillimeter transitions of the isotopologues of hydronium to the variation of the electron-to-proton mass ratio mu. These sensitivities are enhanced for the low frequency mixed inversion-rotational transitions. The lowest frequency transition (6.6 GHz) takes place for isotopologue H2DO+ and respective sensitivity to mu-variation is close to 200. This is about two orders of magnitude larger than the sensitivity of the inversion transition in ammonia, which is currently used for the search of mu-variation in astrophysics.

The atomic electric dipole moment induced by the nuclear electric dipole moment; the magnetic moment effect

We have considered a mechanism for inducing a time-reversal violating electric dipole moment (EDM) in atoms through the interaction of a nuclear EDM (d_N) with the hyperfine interaction, the "magnetic moment effect". We have derived the operator for this interaction and presented analytical formulas for the matrix elements between atomic states. Induced EDMs in the diamagnetic atoms 129Xe, 171Yb, 199Hg, 211Rn, and 225Ra have been calculated numerically. From the experimental limits on the atomic EDMs of 129Xe and 199Hg, we have placed the following constraints on the nuclear EDMs, |d_N(129Xe)|< 1.1 * 10^{-21} |e|cm and |d_N(199Hg)|< 2.8 * 10^{-24} |e|cm.

Binding energy and fission of the heavy charged massive particle - nucleus bound state

We consider a possibility of capture of a heavy charged massive particle $χ^-$ by the nucleus leading to appearance of a bound state. A simple analytic formula allowing to calculate binding energies of the $Nχ^-$ bound state for different nuclei is derived. If the binding energy is sufficiently large the particle $χ^-$ is stable inside the nucleus. The probabilities of the nuclear fissions for such states are calculated. It is shown that the bound states are more stable to a possible fission in comparison to the bare nucleus. This makes an observation of this hypothetical charged massive particle and the superheavy nuclei more probable.

Precision determination of weak charge of $^{133}$Cs from atomic parity violation

We discuss results of the most accurate to-date test of the low-energy electroweak sector of the standard model of elementary particles. Combining previous measurements with our high-precision calculations we extracted the weak charge of the 133Cs nucleus, Q_W = -73.16(29)_exp (20)_th [S.G. Porsev, K. Beloy, and A. Derevianko, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 102}, 181601 (2009)]. The result is in perfect agreement with Q_W^{SM} predicted by the standard model, Q_W^{SM} =-73.16(3), and confirms energy-dependence (or running) of the electroweak interaction and places constraints on a variety of new physics scenarios beyond the standard model. In particular, we increase the lower limit on the masses of extra Z-bosons predicted by models of grand unification and string theories. This paper provides additional details to the Letter. We discuss large-scale calculations in the framework of the coupled-cluster method, including full treatment of single, double, and valence triple excitations. To determine the accuracy of the calculations we computed energies, electric-dipole amplitudes, and hyperfine-structure constants. An extensive comparison with high-accuracy experimental data was carried out.
