Auxiliary field diffusion Monte Carlo calculations of light and medium-mass nuclei with local chiral interactions

Quantum Monte Carlo methods have recently been employed to study properties of nuclei and infinite matter using local chiral effective field theory interactions. In this work, we present a detailed description of the auxiliary field diffusion Monte Carlo algorithm for nuclei in combination with local chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions up to next-to-next-to-leading order. We show results for the binding energy, charge radius, charge form factor, and Coulomb sum rule in nuclei with $3\le A\le16$. Particular attention is devoted to the effect of different operator structures in the three-body force for different cutoffs. The outcomes suggest that local chiral interactions fit to few-body observables give a very good description of the ground-state properties of nuclei up to $^{16}$O, with the exception of one fit for the softer cutoff which predicts overbinding in larger nuclei.

Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of light nuclei with local chiral two- and three-nucleon interactions

Local chiral effective field theory interactions have recently been developed and used in the context of quantum Monte Carlo few- and many-body methods for nuclear physics. In this work, we go over detailed features of local chiral nucleon-nucleon interactions and examine their effect on properties of the deuteron, paying special attention to the perturbativeness of the expansion. We then turn to three-nucleon interactions, focusing on operator ambiguities and their interplay with regulator effects. We then discuss the nuclear Green's function Monte Carlo method, going over both wave-function correlations and approximations for the two- and three-body propagators. Following this, we present a range of results on light nuclei: Binding energies and distribution functions are contrasted and compared, starting from several different microscopic interactions.

Ground-state properties of unitary bosons: from clusters to matter

The properties of cold Bose gases at unitarity have been extensively investigated in the last few years both theoretically and experimentally. In this paper we use a family of interactions tuned to two-body unitarity and very weak three-body binding to demonstrate the universal properties of both clusters and matter. We determine the universal properties of finite clusters up to 60 particles and, for the first time, explicitly demonstrate the saturation of energy and density with particle number and compare with bulk properties. At saturation in the bulk we determine the energy, density, two- and three-body contacts and the condensate fraction. We find that uniform matter is more bound than three-body clusters by nearly two orders of magnitude, the two-body contact is very large in absolute terms, and yet the condensate fraction is also very large, greater than 90%. Equilibrium properties of these systems may be experimentally accessible through rapid quenching of weakly-interacting boson superfluids.

Ab initio calculation of neutral-current $ν$-$^{12}$C inclusive quasielastic scattering

Quasielastic neutrino scattering is an important aspect of the experimental program to study fundamental neutrino properties including neutrino masses, mixing angles, the mass hierarchy and CP-violating phase. Proper interpretation of the experiments requires reliable theoretical calculations of neutrino-nucleus scattering. In this paper we present calculations of response functions and cross sections by neutral-current scattering of neutrinos off $^{12}$C. These calculations are based on realistic treatments of nuclear interactions and currents, the latter including the axial-, vector-, and vector-axial interference terms crucial for determining the difference between neutrino and anti-neutrino scattering and the CP-violating phase. We find that the strength and energy-dependence of two-nucleon processes induced by correlation effects and interaction currents are crucial in providing the most accurate description of neutrino-nucleus scattering in the quasielastic regime.

Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of weak transitions in $A\,$=$\,$6--10 nuclei

Ab initio calculations of the Gamow-Teller (GT) matrix elements in the $β$ decays of $^6$He and $^{10}$C and electron captures in $^7$Be are carried out using both variational and Green's function Monte Carlo wave functions obtained from the Argonne $v_{18}$ two-nucleon and Illinois-7 three-nucleon interactions, and axial many-body currents derived from either meson-exchange phenomenology or chiral effective field theory. The agreement with experimental data is excellent for the electron captures in $^7$Be, while theory overestimates the $^6$He and $^{10}$C data by $\sim 2\%$ and $\sim 10\%$, respectively. We show that for these systems correlations in the nuclear wave functions are crucial to explain the data, while many-body currents increase by $\sim 2$--$3\%$ the one-body GT contributions. These findings suggest that the longstanding $g_A$-problem, i.e., the systematic overprediction ($\sim 20 \%$ in $A\le 18$ nuclei) of GT matrix elements in shell-model calculations, may be resolved, at least partially, by correlation effects.

Is a Trineutron Resonance Lower in Energy than a Tetraneutron Resonance?

We present quantum Monte Carlo calculations of few-neutron systems confined in external potentials based on local chiral interactions at next-to-next-to-leading order in chiral effective field theory. The energy and radial densities for these systems are calculated in different external Woods-Saxon potentials. We assume that their extrapolation to zero external-potential depth provides a quantitative estimate of three- and four-neutron resonances. The validity of this assumption is demonstrated by benchmarking with an exact diagonalization in the two-body case. We find that the extrapolated trineutron resonance, as well as the energy for shallow well depths, is lower than the tetraneutron resonance energy. This suggests that a three-neutron resonance exists below a four-neutron resonance in nature and is potentially measurable. To confirm that the relative ordering of three- and four-neutron resonances is not an artifact of the external confinement, we test that the odd-even staggering in the helium isotopic chain is reproduced within this approach. Finally, we discuss similarities between our results and ultracold Fermi gases.

Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of two neutrons in finite volume

Ab initio calculations provide direct access to the properties of pure neutron systems that are challenging to study experimentally. In addition to their importance for fundamental physics, their properties are required as input for effective field theories of the strong interaction. In this work, we perform auxiliary-field diffusion Monte Carlo calculations of the ground and first excited state of two neutrons in a finite box, considering a simple contact potential as well as chiral effective field theory interactions. We compare the results against exact diagonalizations and present a detailed analysis of the finite-volume effects, whose understanding is crucial for determining observables from the calculated energies. Using the Lüscher formula, we extract the low-energy S-wave scattering parameters from ground- and excited-state energies for different box sizes.

Radii of neutron drops probed via the neutron skin thickness of nuclei

Multi-neutron systems are crucial to understanding the physics of neutron-rich nuclei and neutron stars. Neutron drops, neutrons confined in an external field, are investigated systematically in both non-relativistic and relativistic density functional theories and with ab initio calculations. We demonstrate a strong linear correlation, which is universal in the realm of mean-field models, between the rms radii of neutron drops and the neutron skin thickness of Pb-208 and Ca-48; i.e., the difference between the neutron and proton rms radii of a nucleus. Due to its high quality, this correlation can be used to deduce the radii of neutron drops from the measured neutron skin thickness in a model-independent way, and the radii obtained for neutron drops can provide a useful constraint for realistic three neutron forces. This correlation, together with high- precision measurements of the neutron skin thicknesses of Pb-208 and Ca-48, will have an enduring impact on the understanding of multi-neutron interactions, neutron-rich nuclei, neutron stars, etc.

Electromagnetic response of 12C: a first-principles calculation

The longitudinal and transverse electromagnetic response functions of $^{12}$C are computed in a "first-principles" Green's function Monte Carlo calculation, based on realistic two- and three-nucleon interactions and associated one- and two-body currents. We find excellent agreement between theory and experiment and, in particular, no evidence for the quenching of measured versus calculated longitudinal response. This is further corroborated by a re-analysis of the Coulomb sum rule, in which the contributions from the low-lying $J^π\,$=$\, 2^+$, $0^+_2$ (Hoyle), and $4^+$ states in $^{12}$C are accounted for explicitly in evaluating the total inelastic strength.

Chiral Three-Nucleon Interactions in Light Nuclei, Neutron-$α$ Scattering, and Neutron Matter

We present quantum Monte Carlo calculations of light nuclei, neutron-$α$ scattering, and neutron matter using local two- and three-nucleon ($3N$) interactions derived from chiral effective field theory up to next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^2$LO). The two undetermined $3N$ low-energy couplings are fit to the $^4$He binding energy and, for the first time, to the spin-orbit splitting in the neutron-$α$ $P$-wave phase shifts. Furthermore, we investigate different choices of local $3N$-operator structures and find that chiral interactions at N$^2$LO are able to simultaneously reproduce the properties of $A=3,4,5$ systems and of neutron matter, in contrast to commonly used phenomenological $3N$ interactions.

Quantum Monte Carlo calculations of neutron matter with chiral three-body forces

Chiral effective field theory (EFT) enables a systematic description of low-energy hadronic interactions with controlled theoretical uncertainties. For strongly interacting systems, quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods provide some of the most accurate solutions, but they require as input local potentials. We have recently constructed local chiral nucleon-nucleon (NN) interactions up to next-to-next-to-leading order (N$^2$LO). Chiral EFT naturally predicts consistent many-body forces. In this paper, we consider the leading chiral three-nucleon (3N) interactions in local form. These are included in auxiliary field diffusion Monte Carlo (AFDMC) simulations. We present results for the equation of state of neutron matter and for the energies and radii of neutron drops. In particular, we study the regulator dependence at the Hartree-Fock level and in AFDMC and find that present local regulators lead to less repulsion from 3N forces compared to the usual nonlocal regulators.

Contact interaction in an unitary ultracold Fermi gas

An ultracold Fermi atomic gas at unitarity presents universal properties that in the diluted limit can be well described by a contact interaction. By employing a guide function with correct boundary conditions and making simple modifications to the sampling procedure we are able to handle for the first time a true contact interaction in a quantum Monte Carlo calculation. The results are obtained with small variances. Our calculations for the Bertsch and contact parameters are in excellent agreement with published experiments. The possibility of using a more faithfully description of ultracold atomic gases can help uncover features yet unknown of the ultracold atomic gases. In addition, this work paves the way to perform quantum Monte Carlo calculations for systems interacting with contact interactions, where in many cases the description using potentials with finite effective range might not be accurate.

Ab initio calculation of the electromagnetic and neutral-weak response functions of 4He and 12C

Precise measurement of neutrino oscillations, and hence the determination of their masses demands a quantitative understanding of neutrino-nucleus interactions. To this aim, two-body meson-exchange currents have to be accounted for along within realistic models of nuclear dynamics. We summarize our progresses towards the construction of a consistent framework, based on quantum Monte Carlo methods and on the spectral function approach, that can be exploited to accurately describe neutrino interactions with atomic nuclei over the broad kinematical region covered by neutrino experiments.

Quantum Monte Carlo methods for nuclear physics

Quantum Monte Carlo methods have proved very valuable to study the structure and reactions of light nuclei and nucleonic matter starting from realistic nuclear interactions and currents. These ab-initio calculations reproduce many low-lying states, moments and transitions in light nuclei, and simultaneously predict many properties of light nuclei and neutron matter over a rather wide range of energy and momenta. We review the nuclear interactions and currents, and describe the continuum Quantum Monte Carlo methods used in nuclear physics. These methods are similar to those used in condensed matter and electronic structure but naturally include spin-isospin, tensor, spin-orbit, and three-body interactions. We present a variety of results including the low-lying spectra of light nuclei, nuclear form factors, and transition matrix elements. We also describe low-energy scattering techniques, studies of the electroweak response of nuclei relevant in electron and neutrino scattering, and the properties of dense nucleonic matter as found in neutron stars. A coherent picture of nuclear structure and dynamics emerges based upon rather simple but realistic interactions and currents.

Electromagnetic and neutral-weak response functions of 4He and 12C

Ab initio calculations of the quasi-elastic electromagnetic and neutral-weak response functions of 4He and 12C are carried out for the first time. They are based on a realistic approach to nuclear dynamics, in which the strong interactions are described by two- and three-nucleon potentials and the electroweak interactions with external fields include one- and two-body terms. The Green's function Monte Carlo method is used to calculate directly the Laplace transforms of the response functions, and maximum-entropy techniques are employed to invert the resulting imaginary-time correlation functions with associated statistical errors. The theoretical results, confirmed by experiment in the electromagnetic case, show that two-body currents generate excess transverse strength from threshold to the quasi-elastic to the dip region and beyond. These findings challenge the conventional picture of quasi-elastic inclusive scattering as being largely dominated by single-nucleon knockout processes.

Local chiral effective field theory interactions and quantum Monte Carlo applications

We present details of the derivation of local chiral effective field theory interactions to next-to-next-to-leading order, and show results for nucleon-nucleon phase shifts and deuteron properties for these potentials. We then perform systematic auxiliary-field diffusion Monte Carlo calculations for neutron matter based on the developed local chiral potentials at different orders. This includes studies of the effects of the spectral-function regularization and of the local regulators. For all orders, we compare the quantum Monte Carlo results with perturbative many-body calculations and find excellent agreement for low cutoffs.

Quantum Monte Carlo Calculations of Light Nuclei Using Chiral Potentials

We present the first Green's function Monte Carlo calculations of light nuclei with nuclear interactions derived from chiral effective field theory up to next-to-next-to-leading order. Up to this order, the interactions can be constructed in a local form and are therefore amenable to quantum Monte Carlo calculations. We demonstrate a systematic improvement with each order for the binding energies of $A=3$ and $A=4$ systems. We also carry out the first few-body tests to study perturbative expansions of chiral potentials at different orders, finding that higher-order corrections are more perturbative for softer interactions. Our results confirm the necessity of a three-body force for correct reproduction of experimental binding energies and radii, and pave the way for studying few- and many-nucleon systems using quantum Monte Carlo methods with chiral interactions.

Predicting Energies of Small Clusters from the Inhomogeneous Unitary Fermi Gas

We investigate the inhomogeneous unitary Fermi gas and use the long-wavelength properties to predict the energies of small clusters of unitary fermions trapped in harmonic potentials. The large pairing gap and scale invariance place severe restrictions on the form of the density functional. We determine the relevant universal constants needed to constrain the functional from calculations of the bulk in oscillating external potentials. Comparing with exact Quantum Monte Carlo calculations, we find that the same functional correctly predicts the lack of shell closures for small clusters of fermions trapped in harmonic wells as well as their absolute energies. A rapid convergence to the bulk limit in three dimensions, where the surface to volume ratio is quite large, is demonstrated. The resulting functional can be tested experimentally, and is a key ingredient in predicting possible polarized superfluid phases and the properties of the unitary Fermi gas in optical lattices.
