From the lightest nuclei to the equation of state of asymmetric nuclear matter with realistic nuclear interactions

We present microscopic calculations of light and medium mass nuclei and the equation of state of symmetric and asymmetric nuclear matter using different nucleon-nucleon forces, including a new Argonne version that has the same spin/isospin structure as local chiral forces at next-to-next-to-leading order (N2LO). The calculations are performed using Auxiliary Field Diffusion Monte Carlo (AFDMC) combined with an improved variational wave function. We show that the AFDMC method can now be used to successfully calculate the energies of very light to medium mass nuclei as well as the energy of isospin-asymmetric nuclear matter, demonstrating microscopically the quadratic dependence of the energy on the symmetry energy.

Neutral weak current two-body contributions in inclusive scattering from $^{12}$C

An ab initio calculation of the sum rules of the neutral weak response functions in $^{12}$C is reported, based on a realistic Hamiltonian, including two- and three-nucleon potentials, and on realistic currents, consisting of one- and two-body terms. We find that the sum rules of the response functions associated with the longitudinal and transverse components of the (space-like) neutral current are largest and that a significant portion ($\simeq 30$ %) of the calculated strength is due to two-body terms. This fact may have implications for the MiniBooNE and other neutrino quasi-elastic scattering data on nuclei.

Coupled-cluster calculations of nucleonic matter

Background: The equation of state (EoS) of nucleonic matter is central for the understanding of bulk nuclear properties, the physics of neutron star crusts, and the energy release in supernova explosions. Purpose: This work presents coupled-cluster calculations of infinite nucleonic matter using modern interactions from chiral effective field theory (EFT). It assesses the role of correlations beyond particle-particle and hole-hole ladders, and the role of three-nucleon-forces (3NFs) in nuclear matter calculations with chiral interactions. Methods: This work employs the optimized nucleon-nucleon NN potential NNLOopt at next-to-next-to leading-order, and presents coupled-cluster computations of the EoS for symmetric nuclear matter and neutron matter. The coupled-cluster method employs up to selected triples clusters and the single-particle space consists of a momentum-space lattice. We compare our results with benchmark calculations and control finite-size effects and shell oscillations via twist-averaged boundary conditions. Results: We provide several benchmarks to validate the formalism and show that our results exhibit a good convergence toward the thermodynamic limit. While neutron matter with interactions from chiral EFT is perturbative, symmetric nuclear matter requires nonperturbative approaches. Correlations beyond the standard particle-particle ladder approximation yield non-negligible contributions. The saturation point of symmetric nuclear matter is sensitive to the employed 3NFs and the employed regularization scheme. 3NFs with nonlocal cutoffs exhibit a considerably improved convergence than their local cousins. We are unable to find values for the parameters of the short-range part of the local 3NF that simultaneously yield acceptable values for the saturation point in symmetric nuclear matter and the binding energies of light nuclei.

Quantum Monte Carlo Calculations with Chiral Effective Field Theory Interactions

We present the first quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) calculations with chiral effective field theory (EFT) interactions. To achieve this, we remove all sources of nonlocality, which hamper the inclusion in QMC calculations, in nuclear forces to next-to-next-to-leading order. We perform auxiliary-field diffusion Monte Carlo (AFDMC) calculations for the neutron matter energy up to saturation density based on local leading-order, next-to-leading order, and next-to-next-to-leading order nucleon-nucleon interactions. Our results exhibit a systematic order-by-order convergence in chiral EFT and provide nonperturbative benchmarks with theoretical uncertainties. For the softer interactions, perturbative calculations are in excellent agreement with the AFDMC results. This work paves the way for QMC calculations with systematic chiral EFT interactions for nuclei and nuclear matter, for testing the perturbativeness of different orders, and allows for matching to lattice QCD results by varying the pion mass.

The equation of state of neutron matter, symmetry energy, and neutron star structure

We review the calculation of the equation of state of pure neutron matter using quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods. QMC algorithms permit the study of many-body nuclear systems using realistic two- and three-body forces in a nonperturbative framework. We present the results for the equation of state of neutron matter, and focus on the role of three-neutron forces at supranuclear density. We discuss the correlation between the symmetry energy, the neutron star radius and the symmetry energy. We also combine QMC and theoretical models of the three-nucleon interactions, and recent neutron star observations to constrain the value of the symmetry energy and its density dependence.

Charge form factor and sum rules of electromagnetic response functions in Carbon-12

An "ab initio" calculation of the Carbon-12 elastic form factor, and sum rules of longitudinal and transverse response functions measured in inclusive (e,e') scattering, is reported, based on realistic nuclear potentials and electromagnetic currents. The longitudinal elastic form factor and sum rule are found to be in satisfactory agreement with available experimental data. A direct comparison between theory and experiment is difficult for the transverse sum rule. However, it is shown that the calculated one has large contributions from two-body currents, indicating that these mechanisms lead to a significant enhancement of the quasi-elastic transverse response. This fact may have implications for the anomaly observed in recent neutrino quasi-elastic charge-changing scattering data off Carbon-12.

Effects of the two-body and three-body hyperon-nucleon interactions in Λ-hypernuclei

Background: The calculation of the hyperon binding energy in hypernuclei is crucial to understanding the interaction between hyperons and nucleons. Purpose: We assess the relative importance of two- and three-body hyperon-nucleon force by studying the effect of the hyperon-nucleon-nucleon interaction in closed shell Λ-hypernuclei from A=5 to 91. Methods: The Λ-binding energy has been calculated using the auxiliary field diffusion Monte Carlo method for the first time, to study light and heavy hypernuclei within the same model. Results: Our results show that including a three-body component in the hyperon-nucleon interaction leads to a saturation of the Λ-binding energy remarkably close to the experimental data. In contrast, the two-body force alone gives an unphysical limit for the binding energy. Conclusions: The repulsive contribution of the three-body hyperon-nucleon-nucleon force is essential to reproduce, even qualitatively, the binding energy of the hypernuclei in the mass range considered.

Spin Response and Neutrino Emissivity of Dense Neutron Matter

We study the spin response of cold dense neutron matter in the limit of zero momentum transfer, and show that the frequency dependence of the long-wavelength spin response is well constrained by sum-rules and the asymptotic behavior of the two-particle response at high frequency. The sum-rules are calculated using Auxiliary Field Diffusion Monte Carlo technique and the high frequency two-particle response is calculated for several nucleon-nucleon potentials. At nuclear saturation density, the sum-rules suggest that the strength of the spin response peaks at $ω\simeq$ 40--60 MeV, decays rapidly for $ω\geq $100 MeV, and has a sizable strength below 40 MeV. This strength at relatively low energy may lead to enhanced neutrino production rates in dense neutron-rich matter at temperatures of relevance to core-collapse supernova.

Properties of trapped neutrons interacting with realistic nuclear Hamiltonians

We calculate properties of neutron drops in external potentials using both quantum Monte Carlo and no-core full configuration techniques. The properties of the external wells are varied to examine different density profiles. We compare neutron drop results given by a selection of nuclear Hamiltonians, including realistic two-body interactions as well as several three-body forces. We compute a range of properties for the neutron drops: ground-state energies, spin-orbit splittings, excitation energies, radial densities and rms radii. We compare the equations of state for neutron matter for several of these Hamiltonians. Our results can be used as benchmarks to test other many-body techniques, and to constrain properties of energy-density functionals.

Auxiliary Field Diffusion Monte Carlo study of the Hyperon-Nucleon interaction in $Λ$-hypernuclei

We investigate the role of two- and three-body $Λ$-nucleon forces by computing the ground state of a few $Λ$-hypernuclei with the Auxiliary Field Diffusion Monte Carlo algorithm. Calculations have been performed for masses up to A=41, including some open-shell hypernuclei. The results show that the use of a bare hyperon-nucleon force fitted on the available scattering data yields a consistent overestimate of the $Λ$-separation energy $B_Λ$. The inclusion of a hyperon-nucleon-nucleon interaction systematically reduces $B_Λ$, leading to a qualitatively good agreement with experimental data over the range of masses investigated.

Inclusive neutrino scattering off deuteron from threshold to GeV energies

Background: Neutrino-nucleus quasi-elastic scattering is crucial to interpret the neutrino oscillation results in long baseline neutrino experiments. There are rather large uncertainties in the cross section, due to insufficient knowledge on the role of two-body weak currents. Purpose: Determine the role of two-body weak currents in neutrino-deuteron quasi-elastic scattering up to GeV energies. Methods: Calculate cross sections for inclusive neutrino scattering off deuteron induced by neutral and charge-changing weak currents, from threshold up to GeV energies, using the Argonne $v_{18}$ potential and consistent nuclear electroweak currents with one- and two-body terms. Results: Two-body contributions are found to be small, and increase the cross sections obtained with one-body currents by less than 10% over the whole range of energies. Total cross sections obtained by describing the final two-nucleon states with plane waves differ negligibly, for neutrino energies $\gtrsim 500$ MeV, from those in which interaction effects in these states are fully accounted for. The sensitivity of the calculated cross sections to different models for the two-nucleon potential and/or two-body terms in the weak current is found to be weak. Comparing cross sections to those obtained in a naive model in which the deuteron is taken to consist of a free proton and neutron at rest, nuclear structure effects are illustrated to be non-negligible. Conclusion: Contributions of two-body currents in neutrino-deuteron quasi-elastic scattering up to GeV are found to be smaller than 10%. Finally, it should be stressed that the results reported in this work do not include pion production channels.

Superfluid Pairing in Neutrons and Cold Atoms

Ultracold atomic gases and low-density neutron matter are unique in that they exhibit pairing gaps comparable to the Fermi energy which in this sense are the largest in the laboratory and in nature, respectively. This strong pairing regime, or the crossover between BCS and BEC regimes, requires non-perturbative treatments. We describe Quantum Monte Carlo results useful to understand the properties of these systems, including infinite homogeneous matter and trapped inhomogeneous gases.

Constraints on the symmetry energy and neutron skins from experiments and theory

The symmetry energy contribution to the nuclear Equation of State (EoS) impacts various phenomena in nuclear astrophysics, nuclear structure, and nuclear reactions. Its determination is a key objective of contemporary nuclear physics with consequences for the understanding of dense matter within neutron stars. We examine the results of laboratory experiments that have provided initial constraints on the nuclear symmetry energy and its density dependence at and somewhat below normal nuclear matter density. Some of these constraints have been derived from properties of nuclei. Others have been derived from the nuclear response to electroweak and hadronic probes. We also examine the most frequently used theoretical models that predict the symmetry energy and its slope. By comparing existing constraints on the symmetry pressure to theories, we demonstrate how the contribution of the three-body force, an essential ingredient in neutron matter models, can be determined.

The maximum mass and radius of neutron stars and the nuclear symmetry energy

We calculate the equation of state of neutron matter with realistic two- and three-nucleon interactions using quantum Monte Carlo techniques, and illustrate that the short-range three-neutron interaction determines the correlation between neutron matter energy at nuclear saturation density and higher densities relevant to neutron stars. Our model also makes an experimentally testable prediction for the correlation between the nuclear symmetry energy and its density dependence -- determined solely by the strength of the short-range terms in the three neutron force. The same force provides a significant constraint on the maximum mass and radius of neutron stars.

Connecting Neutron Star Observations to Three-Body Forces in Neutron Matter and to the Nuclear Symmetry Energy

Using a phenomenological form of the equation of state of neutron matter near the saturation density which has been previously demonstrated to be a good characterization of quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we show that currently available neutron star mass and radius measurements provide a significant constraint on the equation of state of neutron matter. At higher densities we model the equation of state using polytropes and a quark matter model, and we show that our results do not change strongly upon variation of the lower boundary density where these polytropes begin. Neutron star observations offer an important constraint on a coefficient which is directly connected to the strength of the three-body force in neutron matter, and thus some theoretical models of the three-body may be ruled out by currently available astrophysical data. In addition, we obtain an estimate of the symmetry energy of nuclear matter and its slope that can be directly compared to the experiment and other theoretical calculations.

BEC-BCS crossover and universal relations in unitary Fermi gases

The contact parameter in unitary Fermi Gases governs the short-distance, high-momentum, and high-energy properties of the system. We perform accurate quantum Monte Carlo calculations with highly optimized trial functions to precisely determine this parameter at T=0, demonstrate its universal application to a variety of observables, and determine the regions of momentum and energy over which the leading short-range behavior is dominant. We derive Tan's expressions for the contact parameter using just the short-range behavior of the ground-state many-body wave function, and use this behavior to calculate the two-body distribution function, one-body density matrix, and the momentum distribution of unitary Fermi gases; providing a precise value of the contact parameter that can be compared to experiments.

Cold neutrons trapped in external fields

The properties of inhomogeneous neutron matter are crucial to the physics of neutron-rich nuclei and the crust of neutron stars. Advances in computational techniques now allow us to accurately determine the binding energies and densities of many neutrons interacting via realistic microscopic interactions and confined in external fields. We perform calculations for different external fields and across several shells to place important constraints on inhomogeneous neutron matter, and hence the large isospin limit of the nuclear energy density functionals that are used to predict properties of heavy nuclei and neutron star crusts. We find important differences between microscopic calculations and current density functionals; in particular the isovector gradient terms are significantly more repulsive than in traditional models, and the spin-orbit and pairing forces are comparatively weaker.

Heavy-Light Few Fermion Clusters at Unitarity

We examine the physics of two, three, and four heavy fermions interacting with a single light fermion via short-range interactions. Four-particle bosonic Efimov states have proven important experimentally and also been the subject of significant theoretical effort. Similar fermionic systems are just now being investigated. We find that with some simple interactions the four- and five-particle states collapse to the interaction range at smaller mass ratios than the three-body state, and also before larger clusters can collapse. These states and their excitations can be studied in cold atom experiments, providing unique insights into the role of few-body systems in many-body physics.
