Effect of the pseudogap on the uniform magnetic susceptibility of Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3O7-d

The effects of planar hole content, p, on the temperature-dependent uniform (q = 0) magnetic susceptibility, c(T), of polycrystalline Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3O7-d compounds with 0.0 </= x </= 0.20 were investigated over a wide range of oxygen deficiency (d). Systematic variations in c(T) were found with changing p. The characteristic pseudogap temperature scale, Eg(p)/kB, was extracted from the analysis of the c(T,p) data. We have found clear evidence that the pseudogap in the quasi-particle spectral weight appears abruptly at a planar hole content of p ~ 0.19, and that it grows rapidly with decreasing p.

Scaling relation for the superfluid density in cuprate superconductors

A universal scaling relation, $ρ_s \propto σ(T_c)\times T_c$ has been reported by Homes $et$ $al$. (Nature (London) {\bf 430}, 539 (2004)) where $ρ_s$ is the superfluid density and $σ(T)$ is the DC conductivity. The relation was shown to apply to both c-axis and in-plane dynamics for high-$T_c$ superconductors as well as to the more conventional superconductors Nb and Pb, suggesting common physics in these systems. We show quantitatively that the scaling behavior has several possible origins including, marginal Fermi-liquid behavior, Josephson coupling, dirty-limit superconductivity and unitary impurity scattering for a d-wave order parameter. However, the relation breaks down seriously in overdoped cuprates, and possibly even at lower doping.

The effect of Zn substitution on the state of oxygen deficiency and hole concentration in Y1-xCaxBa2(Cu1-yZny)3O7-d

We have investigated the effect of Zn substitution on the hole content, p, and the oxygen deficiency, d, for a series of high-quality crystalline c-axis oriented thin films and polycrystalline Y1-xCaxBa2(Cu1-yZny)3O7-delta compounds over a wide range of composition (x, y, and delta). p was determined from the room-temperature thermopower, S[290K]. When annealed at a given temperature and oxygen partial pressure, a small but systematic variation in S[290K] was observed with Zn, for all the samples. From the analysis of the temperature derivative of resistivity, drho/dT, at 300K, which varies almost linearly with p, irrespective of the composition of the sample, and the thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), we have found that annealing under identical conditions makes the Zn-substituted compounds somewhat more oxygen deficient compared to the Zn-free ones.

Low-temperature critical current of Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3O7-delta thin films as a function of hole content and oxygen deficiency

The effects of hole content (p) and oxygen deficiency (delta) on the zero-field critical current density, Jc0, were investigated for high-quality c-axis oriented Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3O7-delta (x = 0, 0.05, 0.10, and 0.20) thin films. Ca was used to introduce hole carriers in the CuO2 planes, independent of the oxygen deficiency in the CuO1-delta chains. Low-temperature Jc0(16K) of these films above the optimum doping were found to be high (> 10^7 Amp/cm^2) and were primarily determined by the hole concentration, reaching a maximum at p ~ 0.185+/-0.005, irrespective of oxygen deficiency. This implies that oxygen disorder plays only a secondary role and the intrinsic Jc0 is mainly governed by the carrier concentration and consequently by the superconducting condensation energy which also peaks at p ~ 0.19 where the pseudogap correlation vanishes.

Anomalous pseudogap and superconducting state properties of heavily disordered Y1-xCaxBa2(Cu1-yZny)3O7-delta

The role of substantial in-plane disorder (Zn) on the transport and AC susceptibility of Y1-xCaxBa2(Cu1-yZny)3O7-delta was investigated over a wide range of planar hole concentration, p. Resistivity, r(T), for a number of overdoped to underdoped samples with y equals/greater than 0.055 showed clear downturns at a characteristic temperature similar to that found at T* in Zn-free underdoped samples because of the presence of the pseudogap. Contrary to the widely observed behavior for underdoped cuprates at lower Zn contents (where the pseudogap energy increases almost linearly with decreasing p in the same way as for the Zn-free compounds), this apparent pseudogap temperature at high Zn content showed very little or no p-dependence. It also increases systematically with increasing Zn concentration in the CuO2 planes. This anomalous behavior appears quite abruptly, e.g., samples with y less than/equals 0.05 exhibit the usual T*(p) behavior. AC susceptibility of these heavily disordered samples showed the superfluid density to be extremely low. Magneto-transport, r(T,H), measurements are provisionally interpreted in terms of high-strength pinning centers for vortices in these samples. We also discuss various possible scenarios that might lead to a Zn induced pseudogap in the cuprates.

Doping Dependence of the Critical Current and Irreversibility Field in Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3O7-delta

Critical current measurements were made on thin films of YBa2Cu3O7-delta and Y0.8Ca0.2Ba2Cu3O7-delta produced by sol-gel and pulsed laser deposition, respectively. Both samples have high critical currents at low temperatures and the critical current, Jc, is largest in the overdoped Y0.8Ca0.2Ba2Cu3O7-delta thin film. Annealing studies show a large increase in Jc with increasing hole concentration and suggests that the maximum Jc should occur for overdoped samples. The very overdoped region of the superconducting phase diagram was probed by studying bulk ceramic Y0.8Ca0.2Ba2Cu3O7-delta samples, where it was found that the irreversibility field systematically increases with increasing hole concentration when scaled by the reduced temperature (t = (1 - T/Tc)).

Structural and electrical properties of c-axis oriented Y1-xCaxBa2(Cu1-yZny)3O7-delta thin films grown by pulsed laser deposition

Ca- and Zn-subsituted Y1-xCaxBa2(Cu1-yZny)O7-delta (x = 0, 0.05 and y = 0, 0.02, 0.04, 0.05) thin films were grown on SrTiO3 (100) substrates using the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) technique. Effects of various growth parameters on the quality of the film were studied via X-ray diffraction (XRD), atomic force microscopy (AFM), and in-plane resistivity, rhoab(T), measurements. The deposition temperature and oxygen partial pressure were gradually increased to 820C and 1.20 mbar respectively. Films grown under these conditions exhibited good c-axis orientation (primarily limited by the grain size) and low values of the extrapolated residual resistivity, rho(0), at zero temperature. The planar hole content, p, was determined from the room temperature thermopower, S[290K], measurements and the effects of oxygen annealing were also studied. Fully oxygenated samples were found to be overdoped with p ~ 0.195. The Superconducting transition temperature Tc(p), and rho(T,p) showed the expected systematic variations with changing Zn content.

The doping phase diagram of Y1-xCaxBa2(Cu1-yZny)3O7-delta from transport measurements: tracking the pseudogap below Tc

The effects of planar hole concentration, p, and magnetic field on the resistivity, rho(T), of high-quality c-axis oriented crystalline thin films and sintered Y1-xCaxBa2(Cu1-yZny)3O7-delta samples were investigated over a wide range of Ca, Zn, and oxygen contents. Zn was used to suppress superconductivity and this enabled us to extract the characteristic pseudogap temperature, T*(p) below Tc0(p) [ = Tc (x =0, y = 0)]. We have also located the characteristic temperature, Tscf, marking the onset of significant superconducting fluctuations above Tc, from the analysis of rho(T,H,p) and rho(T,p) data. This enabled us to identify T*(p) near the optimum doping level where the values of T*(p) and Tscf(p) are very close and hard to distinguish. We again found that T*(p) depends only on the hole concentration p, and not on the level of disorder associated with Zn or Ca substitutions. We conclude that (i) T*(p) (and therefore, the pseudogap) persists below Tc0(p) on the overdoped side and does not merge with the Tc0(p) line and (ii) T*(p) and the pseudogap energy extrapolate to zero at the doping p = 0.19 +/- 0.01.

The Doping Phase Diagram of Y1-xcaxba2(Cu1-yzny)3O7-d from Transport Measurements: Tracking the Pseudogap Below Tc (y = 0)

The effects of planar hole concentration, p, on the resistivity, r(T), of sintered Y1-xCaxBa2(Cu1-yZny)3O7-d samples were investigated over a wide range of Ca, Zn, and oxygen contents. Zn was used to suppress superconductivity and this enabled us to extract the characteristic pseudogap temperature, T*(p), from r(T,p) data below Tco(p) [ = Tc (y = 0)]. We have also located the characteristic temperature, Tscf, marking the onset of significant superconducting fluctuations above Tc, from the analysis of r(T,H,p) and r(T,p) data. This enabled us to identify T*(p) near the optimum doping level where the values of T*(p) and Tscf(p) are very close and hard to distinguish. We again found that T*(p) depends only on the hole concentration p, and not on the level of disorder associated with Zn or Ca substitutions. We conclude that (i) T*(p) (and therefore, the pseudogap) persists below Tco(p) on the overdoped side and does not merge with the Tco(p) line and (ii) T*(p), and thus the pseudogap energy, extrapolates to zero at the doping p = 0.19 +/- 0.01. Temperature dependence of electrical resistivity of high-Tc cuprates - from pseudogap to overdoped regions

The effects of planar hole concentration, p, and in-plane disorder, Zn (y), on the DC resistivity, r(T), of sintered samples of Y_{1-x}Ca_xBa_2(Cu_{1-y}Zn_y)_3O_{7-d} were investigated over a wide doping range by changing both the oxygen deficiency (d) and Ca content (x). From the r(T,p) data we extracted characteristic crossover temperatures on the underdoped and overdoped sides, T* and T_m respectively, above which r(T) is linear. We compare our results with a number of other polycrystalline, thin film and single crystal cuprate superconductors and find similar behavior in the p-dependence of T*(p), T_m(p), and the resistivity exponent, m(p), in fits to r(T) = r_0 + aT^m on the overdoped side. Our findings point towards the possible existence of a quantum critical point (QCP) at the doping p=0.19 +/- 0.01.
