Theory of Raman Scattering from Orbital Excitations in Manganese Oxides

We present a theory of the Raman scattering from the orbital wave excitations in manganese oxides. Two excitation processes of the Raman scattering are proposed. The Raman scattering cross section is formulated by using the pseudospin operator for orbital degree of freedom in a Mn ion. The Raman spectra from the orbital wave excitations are calculated and their implications in the recent experimental results reported in LaMnO$_3$ are discussed.

Spin dynamical properties and orbital states of the layered perovskite La_2-2x_Sr_1+2x_Mn_2_O_7 (0.3 <= x < 0.5)

Low-temperature spin dynamics of the double-layered perovskite La_2-2x_Sr_1+2x_Mn_2_O_7 (LSMO327) was systematically studied in a wide hole concentration range (0.3 <= x < 0.5). The spin-wave dispersion, which is almost perfectly 2D, has two branches due to a coupling between layers within a double-layer. Each branch exhibits a characteristic intensity oscillation along the out-of-plane direction. We found that the in-plane spin stiffness constant and the gap between the two branches strongly depend on x. By fitting to calculated dispersion relations and cross sections assuming Heisenberg models, we have obtained the in-plane (J_para), intra-bilayer (J_perp) and inter-bilayer (J') exchange interactions at each x. At x=0.30, J_para=-4meV and J_perp=-5meV, namely almost isotropic and ferromagnetic. Upon increasing x, J_perp rapidly approaches zero while |J_para| increases slightly, indicating an enhancement of the planar magnetic anisotropy. At x=0.48, J_para reaches -9meV, while J_perp turns to +1meV indicating an antiferromagnetic interaction. Such a drastic change of the exchange interactions can be ascribed to the change of the relative stability of the d_x^2-y^2 and d_3z^2-r^2 orbital states upon doping. However, a simple linear combination of the two states results in an orbital state with an orthorhombic symmetry, which is inconsistent with the tetragonal symmetry of the crystal structure. We thus propose that an ``orbital liquid'' state realizes in LSMO327, where the charge distribution symmetry is kept tetragonal around each Mn site.

Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering from Charge and Orbital Excitations in Manganites

We present a theory of the resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) to study electronic excitations in orbital ordered manganites. The charge and orbital excitations of the Mn 3d electron are caused by the Coulomb interactions in the intermediate scattering state. The scattering cross section is formulated by the Liouville operator method where the local and itinerant natures of the excitations are taken into account on an equal footing. As a result, the cross section is expressed by the charge and orbital correlation functions associated with local corrections. The RIXS spectra are calculated numerically as functions of momentum and polarization of x ray. Through the calculations, we propose that RIXS provides a great opportunity to study the unique electronic excitations in correlated electron systems with orbital degeneracy.

Prospects of Measuring General Higgs Couplings at e^+e^- Linear Colliders

We examine how accurately the general HZV couplings, with V=Z,gamma, may be determined by studying e^+e^- --> Hff-bar processes at future e^+e^- linear colliders. By using the optimal-observable method, which makes use of all available experimental information, we find out which combinations of the various HZV coupling terms may be constrained most efficiently with high luminosity. We also assess the benefits of measuring the tau-lepton helicities, identifying the bottom-hadron charges, polarizing the electron beam and running at two different collider energies. The HZZ couplings are generally found to be well constrained, even without these options, while the HZ-gamma couplings are not. The constraints on the latter may be significantly improved by beam polarization.

Orbital Structure and Magnetic Ordering in Layered Manganites: Universal Correlation and Its Mechanism

Correlation between orbital structure and magnetic ordering in bilayered manganites is examined. A level separation between the $3d_{3z^2-r^2}$ and $3d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbitals in a Mn ion is calculated in the ionic model for a large number of the compounds. It is found that the relative stability of the orbitals dominates the magnetic transition temperatures as well as the magnetic structures. A mechanism of the correlation between orbital and magnetism is investigated based on the theoretical model with the two $e_g$ orbitals under strong electron correlation.

D=4, N=1, Type IIA Orientifolds

We study D=4, N=1, type IIA orientifold with orbifold group $Z_N$ and $Z_N \times Z_M$. We calculate one-loop vacuum amplitudes for Klein bottle, cylinder and Mobius strip and extract the tadpole divergences. We find that the tadpole cancellation conditions thus obtained are satisfied by the $Z_4$, $Z_8$, $Z'_8$, $Z'_{12}$ orientifolds while there is no solution for $Z_3$, $Z_7$, $Z_6$, $Z'_6$, $Z_{12}$. The $Z_4 \times Z_4$ type IIA orientifold is also constructed by introducing four different configurations of 6-branes. We argue about perturbative versus non-perturbative orientifold vacua under T- duality between the type IIA and the type IIB $Z_N$ orientifolds in four dimensions.

Phase Transition in Perovskite Manganites with Orbital Degree of Freedom

Roles of orbital degree of freedom of Mn ions in phase transition as a function of temperature and hole concentration in perovskite manganites are studied. It is shown that the orbital order-disorder transition is of the first order in the wide region of hole concentration and the N$\rm \acute{e}$el temperature for the anisotropic spin ordering, such as the layer-type antiferromagnetic one, is lower than the orbital ordering temperature due to the anisotropy in the orbital space. The calculated results of the temperature dependence of the spin and orbital order parameters explain a variety of the experiments observed in manganites.

Role of Orbitals in Manganese Oxides - Ordering and Fluctuation

We study the manganese oxides from the viewpoint of the strongly correlated doped Mott insulator. The magnetic ordering and the charge transport are governed by the orbital degrees of freedom, and their dimensionality is controlled by the anisotropic transfer integrals between the $e_g$ orbitals. As x increases the magnetic structure is predicted to change as $A \to F \to A \to C \to G$ (F: ferromagnet, A: layered antiferromagnet, C: rod-type antiferromagnet, G: usual antiferromagnet), in agreement with experiments. Especially the orbital is aligned as $d_{x^2-y^2}$ in the metallic A state, which explains the quasi 2D transport and no canting of the spin observed experimentally. Next we discuss the ferromagnetic state without the orbital ordering due to the quantum fluctuation. Here the interplay between the electron repulsion U and the Jahn-Teller electron-phonon interation $E_{LR}$ is studied with a large d model. In addition to this strong correlation, we propose that the dynamical phase separation could explain the specific heat as well as the various anomalous physical properties, e.g., resistivity, photo-emission, etc.

Orbital Degree of Freedom and Phase Separation in Ferromagnetic Manganites at Finite Temperatures

The spin and orbital phase diagram for perovskite manganites are investigated as a function of temperature and hole concentration. The superexchange and double exchange interactions dominate the ferromagnetic phases in the low and high concentration regions of doped holes, respectively. The two interactions favor different orbital states each other. Between the phases, two interactions compete with each other and the phase separation appears in the wide range of temperature and hole concentration. The anisotropy of the orbital space causes discontinuous changes of the orbital state and promotes the phase separation. The relation between the phase separation and the stripe- and sheet-type charge segregation is discussed.

Transition between two ferromagnetic states driven by orbital ordering in La_{0.88}Sr_{0.12}MnO_3

A lightly doped perovskite mangantite La_{0.88}Sr_{0.12}MnO_3 exhibits a phase transition at T_{OO}=145 K from a ferromagnetic metal (T_C=172 K) to a novel ferromagnetic insulator. We identify that the key parameter in the transition is the orbital degree of freedom in e_g electrons. By utilizing the resonant x-ray scattering technique, orbital ordering is directly detected below T_{OO}, in spite of a significant diminution of the cooperative Jahn-Teller distortion. The new experimental features are well described by a theory treating the orbital degree of freedom under strong electron correlation. The present experimental and theoretical studies uncover a crucial role of the orbital degree in the metal-insulator transition in lightly doped manganites.

Field Induced Transition from Metal to Insulator in the CMR Manganites

The gigantic reduction of the electric resistivity under the applied magnetic field, CMR effect, is now widely accepted to appear in the vicinity of the insulator to metal transition of the perovskite manganites. Recently, we have discovered the first order transition from ferromagnetic metal to insulator in $\rm La_{0.88}Sr_{0.12}MnO_3$ of the CMR manganite. This phase transition induces the tremendous increase of the resistivity under the external magnetic field just near above the phase transition temperature. We report here fairly detailed results from the systematic experiments including neutron and synchrotron X-ray scattering studies.

Two Ferromagnetic States in Magnetoresistive Manganites - First Order Transition Driven by Orbitals -

A systematic study of the electronic structure in perovskite manganites is presented. The effective Hamiltonian is derived by taking into account the degeneracy of $e_g$ orbitals and strong electron correlation in Mn ions. The spin and orbital orderings are examined as functions of carrier concentration in the mean-field approximation applied to the effective Hamiltonian. We obtain the first order phase transition between ferromagnetic metallic and ferromagnetic insulating states in the lightly doped region. The transition is accompanied with the orbital order-disorder one which is directly observed in the anomalous X-ray scattering experiments. The present investigation shows a novel role of the orbital degree of freedom on metal-insulator transition in manganites.

Probing nonstandard bosonic interactions via W-boson pair production at lepton colliders

The process e+e- --> W+W- provides a valuable laboratory to test the Standard Model (SM) and to search for new physics. The most general helicity amplitudes for this process require the introduction of nine form-factors which we calculate in the context of SU(2) X U(1) gauge-invariant extensions of the SM. The contributions of new physics are parametrized via an effective Lagrangian constructed from the light fields. Because the mechanism of electroweak symmetry-breaking remains an open problem we consider both the effective Lagrangian with a linearly realized Higgs sector, i.e. with a light physical Higgs boson, and the effective Lagrangian which utilizes a nonlinear realization of the Higgs mechanism. The use of an effective Lagrangian allows one to calculate consistently nonstandard contributions to e+e- --> W+W- amplitudes as well as the nonstandard contributions to other processes. We study the interplay of the low-energy and Z-pole measurements with measurements via the processes e+e- --> fermion pairs and e+e- --> W+W- at LEP II or a future linear e+e- collider. Concrete relationships between operators of the linear and nonlinear realizations are presented where possible.
