Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov Model and Simulation of Attractive and Repulsive Bose-Einstein Condensates

We describe a model of dynamic Bose-Einstein condensates near a Feshbach resonance that is computationally feasible under assumptions of spherical or cylindrical symmetry. Simulations in spherical symmetry approximate the experimentally measured time to collapse of an unstably attractive condensate only when the molecular binding energy in the model is correct, demonstrating that the quantum fluctuations and atom-molecule pairing included in the model are the dominant mechanisms during collapse. Simulations of condensates with repulsive interactions find some quantitative disagreement, suggesting that pairing and quantum fluctuations are not the only significant factors for condensate loss or burst formation. Inclusion of three-body recombination was found to be inconsequential in all of our simulations, though we do not consider recent experiments [1] conducted at higher densities.

Adiabatic Formation of Rydberg Crystals with Chirped Laser Pulses

Ultracold atomic gases have been used extensively in recent years to realize textbook examples of condensed matter phenomena. Recently, phase transitions to ordered structures have been predicted for gases of highly excited, 'frozen' Rydberg atoms. Such Rydberg crystals are a model for dilute metallic solids with tunable lattice parameters, and provide access to a wide variety of fundamental phenomena. We investigate theoretically how such structures can be created in four distinct cold atomic systems, by using tailored laser-excitation in the presence of strong Rydberg-Rydberg interactions. We study in detail the experimental requirements and limitations for these systems, and characterize the basic properties of small crystalline Rydberg structures in one, two and three dimensions.

Synthetic magneto-hydrodynamics in Bose-Einstein condensates and routes to vortex nucleation

Engineering of synthetic magnetic flux in Bose-Einstein condensates [Lin et al., Nature {\bf 462}, 628 (2009)] has prospects for attaining the high vortex densities necessary to emulate the fractional quantum Hall effect. We analytically establish the hydrodynamical behaviour of a condensate in a uniform synthetic magnetic field, including its density and velocity profile. Importantly, we find that the onset of vortex nucleation observed experimentally corresponds to a dynamical instability in the hydrodynamical solutions and reveal other routes to instability and anticipated vortex nucleation.

Feshbach resonances in 3He*-4He* mixtures

We discuss the stability of homonuclear and heteronuclear mixtures of 3He and 4He atoms in the metastable 2^3S_1 state (He*) and predict positions and widths of Feshbach resonances by using the Asymptotic Bound-state Model (ABM). All calculations are performed without fit parameters, using \emph{ab-initio} calculations of molecular potentials. One promising very broad Feshbach resonance (ΔB=72.9^{+18.3}_{-19.3} mT) is found that allows for tuning of the inter-isotope scattering length.

Asymptotic Bound-state Model for Feshbach Resonances

We present an Asymptotic Bound-state Model which can be used to accurately describe all Feshbach resonance positions and widths in a two-body system. With this model we determine the coupled bound states of a particular two-body system. The model is based on analytic properties of the two-body Hamiltonian, and on asymptotic properties of uncoupled bound states in the interaction potentials. In its most simple version, the only necessary parameters are the least bound state energies and actual potentials are not used. The complexity of the model can be stepwise increased by introducing threshold effects, multiple vibrational levels and additional potential parameters. The model is extensively tested on the 6Li-40K system and additional calculations on the 40K-87Rb system are presented.

Collective excitation frequencies and stationary states of trapped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates in the Thomas-Fermi regime

We present a general method for obtaining the exact static solutions and collective excitation frequencies of a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with dipolar atomic interactions in the Thomas-Fermi regime. The method incorporates analytic expressions for the dipolar potential of an arbitrary polynomial density profile, thereby reducing the problem of handling non-local dipolar interactions to the solution of algebraic equations. We comprehensively map out the static solutions and excitation modes, including non-cylindrically symmetric traps, and also the case of negative scattering length where dipolar interactions stabilize an otherwise unstable condensate. The dynamical stability of the excitation modes gives insight into the onset of collapse of a dipolar BEC. We find that global collapse is consistently mediated by an anisotropic quadrupolar collective mode, although there are two trapping regimes in which the BEC is stable against quadrupole fluctuations even as the ratio of the dipolar to s-wave interactions becomes infinite. Motivated by the possibility of fragmented BEC in a dipolar Bose gas due to the partially attractive interactions, we pay special attention to the scissors modes, which can provide a signature of superfluidity, and identify a long-range restoring force which is peculiar to dipolar systems. As part of the supporting material for this paper we provide the computer program used to make the calculations, including a graphical user interface.

Broad Feshbach resonance in the 6Li-40K mixture

We study the widths of interspecies Feshbach resonances in a mixture of the fermionic quantum gases 6Li and 40K. We develop a model to calculate the width and position of all available Feshbach resonances for a system. Using the model we select the optimal resonance to study the 6Li/40K mixture. Experimentally, we obtain the asymmetric Fano lineshape of the interspecies elastic cross section by measuring the distillation rate of 6Li atoms from a potassium-rich 6Li/40K mixture as a function of magnetic field. This provides us with the first experimental determination of the width of a resonance in this mixture, Delta B=1.5(5) G. Our results offer good perspectives for the observation of universal crossover physics using this mass-imbalanced fermionic mixture.

Predicting scattering properties of ultracold atoms: adiabatic accumulated phase method and mass scaling

Ultracold atoms are increasingly used for high precision experiments that can be utilized to extract accurate scattering properties. This calls for a stronger need to improve on the accuracy of interatomic potentials, and in particular the usually rather inaccurate inner-range potentials. A boundary condition for this inner range can be conveniently given via the accumulated phase method. However, in this approach one should satisfy two conditions, which are in principle conflicting, and the validity of these approximations comes under stress when higher precision is required. We show that a better compromise between the two is possible by allowing for an adiabatic change of the hyperfine mixing of singlet and triplet states for interatomic distances smaller than the separation radius. A mass scaling approach to relate accumulated phase parameters in a combined analysis of isotopically related atom pairs is described in detail and its accuracy is estimated, taking into account both Born-Oppenheimer and WKB breakdown. We demonstrate how numbers of singlet and triplet bound states follow from the mass scaling.

Analytic models of ultra-cold atomic collisions at negative energies for application to confinement-induced resonances

We construct simple analytic models of the $S$-matrix, accounting for both scattering resonances and smooth background contributions for collisions that occur below the s-wave threshold. Such models are important for studying confinement-induced resonances such as those occurring in cold collisions of $^{133}$Cs atoms in separated sites of a polarization-gradient optical lattice. Because these resonances occur at negative energy with respect to the s-wave threshold, they cannot be studied easily using direct numerical solutions of the Schrödinger equation. Using our analytic model, we extend previous studies of negative-energy scattering to the multichannel case, accounting for the interplay of Feshbach resonances, large background scattering lengths, and inelastic processes.

Collisional properties of weakly bound heteronuclear dimers

We consider collisional properties of weakly bound heteronuclear molecules (dimers) formed in a two-species mixture of atoms with a large mass difference. We focus on dimers containing light fermionic atoms as they manifest collisional stability due to an effective dimer-dimer repulsion originating from the exchange of the light atoms. In order to solve the dimer-dimer scattering problem we develop a theoretical approach, which provides a physically transparent and quantitative description of this four-atom system in terms of three- and two-body observables. We calculate the elastic scattering amplitude and the rates of inelastic processes such as the trimer formation and the relaxation of dimers into deeply bound molecular states. Irrespective of whether the heavy atoms are bosons or fermions, the inelastic rate can be significantly lower than the rate of elastic collisions. Moreover, the measurement of the inelastic rate which is a four-body observable, can be an efficient and precise tool for determining three-body observables such as the three-body parameter, positions of Efimov states and their lifetimes.

Exploring an ultracold Fermi-Fermi mixture: Interspecies Feshbach resonances and scattering properties of 6Li and 40K

We report on the observation of Feshbach resonances in an ultracold mixture of two fermionic species, 6Li and 40K. The experimental data are interpreted using a simple asymptotic bound state model and full coupled channels calculations. This unambiguously assigns the observed resonances in terms of various s- and p-wave molecular states and fully characterizes the ground-state scattering properties in any combination of spin states.

BCS-BEC crossover in a strongly correlated Fermi gas

We study the BCS-BEC crossover in the strongly correlated regime of an ultra-cold rotating two component Fermi gas. Strong correlations are shown to generate an additional long-range interaction which results in a modified crossover region compared to the non-rotating situation. The two-particle correlation function reveals a smooth crossover between the s-wave paired fermionic fractional quantum Hall state and the bosonic Laughlin state.

BCS-BEC Crossover in the Strongly Correlated Regime of ultra-cold Fermi gases

We study BCS-BEC crossover in the strongly correlated regime of two component rotating Fermi gases. We predict that the strong correlations induced by rotation will have the effect of modifying the crossover region relative to the non-rotating situation. We show via the two particle correlation function that the crossover smoothly connects the s-wave paired fermionic fractional quantum Hall state to the bosonic Laughlin state.

Resonant scattering properties close to a p-wave Feshbach resonance

We present a semi-analytical treatment of both the elastic and inelastic collisional properties near a p-wave Feshbach resonance. Our model is based on a simple three channel system that reproduces more elaborate coupled-channel calculations. We stress the main differences between s-wave and p-wave scattering. We show in particular that, for elastic and inelastic scattering close to a p-wave Feshbach resonance, resonant processes dominate over the low-energy behaviour.

Expansion of a lithium gas in the BEC-BCS crossover

We report on experiments in $^6$Li Fermi gases near Feshbach resonances. A broad s-wave resonance is used to form a Bose-Einstein condensate of weakly bound $^6$Li$_2$ molecules in a crossed optical trap. The measured molecule-molecule scattering length of $170^{+100}_{-60}$ nm at 770 G is found in good agreement with theory. The expansion energy of the cloud in the BEC-BCS crossover region is measured. Finally we discuss the properties of p-wave Feshbach resonances observed near 200 Gauss and new s-wave resonances in the heteronuclear $^6$Li- $^7$Li mixture.

Formation of fermionic molecules via interisotope Feshbach resonances

We perform an analysis of recent experimental measurements and improve the lithium interaction potentials. For $^6$Li a consistent description can be given. We discuss theoretical uncertainties for the position of the wide $^6$Li Feshbach resonance, and we present an analytic scattering model for this resonance, based on the inclusion of a field-dependent virtual open-channel state. We predict new Feshbach resonances for the $^6$Li-$^7$Li system, and their importance for different types of crossover superfluidity models is discussed.

P-wave Feshbach resonances of ultra-cold $^6$Li

We report the observation of three p-wave Feshbach resonances of $^6$Li atoms in the lowest hyperfine state $f=1/2$. The positions of the resonances are in good agreement with theory. We study the lifetime of the cloud in the vicinity of the Feshbach resonances and show that depending on the spin states, 2- or 3-body mechanisms are at play. In the case of dipolar losses, we observe a non-trivial temperature dependence that is well explained by a simple model.

Feshbach resonances with large background scattering length: interplay with open-channel resonances

Feshbach resonances are commonly described by a single-resonance Feshbach model, and open-channel resonances are not taken into account explicitly. However, an open-channel resonance near threshold limits the range of validity of this model. Such a situation exists when the background scattering length is much larger than the range of the interatomic potential. The open-channel resonance introduces strong threshold effects not included in the single-resonance description. We derive an easy-to-use analytical model that takes into account both the Feshbach resonance and the open-channel resonance. We apply our model to $^{85}$Rb, which has a large background scattering length, and show that the agreement with coupled-channels calculations is excellent. The model can be readily applied to other atomic systems with a large background scattering length, such as $^6$Li and $^{133}$Cs. Our approach provides full insight into the underlying physics of the interplay between open-channel (or potential) resonances and Feshbach resonances.
