Thermal photon radiation in high multiplicity p+Pb collisions at the Large Hadron Collider

The collective behaviour of hadronic particles has been observed in high multiplicity proton-lead collisions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), as well as in deuteron-gold collisions at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC). In this work we present the first calculation, in the hydrodynamic framework, of thermal photon radiation from such small collision systems. Owing to their compact size, these systems can reach temperatures comparable to those in central nucleus-nucleus collisions. The thermal photons can thus shine over the prompt background, and increase the low $p_T$ direct photon spectrum by a factor of 2-3 in 0-1% p+Pb collisions at 5.02 TeV. This thermal photon enhancement can therefore serve as a clean signature of the existence of a hot quark-gluon plasma during the evolution of these small collision systems, as well as validate hydrodynamic behavior in small systems.

Production and Elliptic Flow of Dileptons and Photons in the semi-Quark Gluon Plasma

We consider the thermal production of dileptons and photons at temperatures above the critical temperature in QCD. We use a model where color excitations are suppressed by a small value of the Polyakov loop, the semi Quark-Gluon Plasma (QGP). Comparing the semi-QGP to the perturbative QGP, we find a mild enhancement of thermal dileptons. In contrast, to leading logarithmic order in weak coupling there are far fewer hard photons from the semi-QGP than the usual QGP. To illustrate the possible effects on photon and dileptons production in heavy ion collisions, we integrate the rate with a realistic hydrodynamic simulation. Dileptons uniformly exhibit a small flow, but the strong suppression of photons in the semi-QGP tends to bias the elliptical flow of photons to that generated in the hadronic phase.

Extracting the bulk viscosity of the quark-gluon plasma

We investigate the implications of a nonzero bulk viscosity coefficient on the azimuthal momentum anisotropy of ultracentral relativistic heavy ion collisions at the Large Hadron Collider. We find that, with IP-Glasma initial conditions, a finite bulk viscosity coefficient leads to a better description of the flow harmonics in ultracentral collisions. We then extract optimal values of bulk and shear viscosity coefficients that provide the best agreement with flow harmonic coefficients data in this centrality class.

Thermally Fluctuating Second-Order Viscous Hydrodynamics and Heavy-Ion Collisions

The fluctuation-dissipation theorem requires the presence of thermal noise in viscous fluids. The time and length scales of heavy ion collisions are small enough so that the thermal noise can have a measurable effect on observables. Thermal noise is included in numerical simulations of high energy lead-lead collisions, increasing average values of the momentum eccentricity and contributing to its event by event fluctuations.

Effect of initial-state nucleon-nucleon correlations on collective flow in ultra-central heavy-ion collisions

We investigate the effect of nucleon-nucleon correlations on the initial condition of ultra-central heavy ion collisions at LHC energies. We calculate the eccentricities of the MC-Glauber and IP-Glasma models in the 0--1% centrality class and show that they are considerably affected by the inclusion of such type of correlations. For an IP-Glasma initial condition, we further demonstrate that this effect survives the fluid-dynamical evolution of the system and can be observed in its final state azimuthal momentum anisotropy.

Transport Coefficients of Bulk Viscous Pressure in the 14-moment approximation

We compute the transport coefficients that appear in the fluid-dynamical equations for the bulk viscous pressure and shear-stress tensor using the 14-moment approximation in the limit of small, but finite, masses. In this limit, we are able to express all these coefficients in terms of known thermodynamic quantities, such as the thermodynamic pressure, energy density, and the velocity of sound. We explicitly demonstrate that the ratio of bulk viscosity to bulk relaxation time behaves very differently, as a function of temperature, than the ratio of shear viscosity to shear relaxation time. We further explicitly compute, for the first time, the transport coefficients that couple the bulk viscous pressure to the shear-stress tensor and vice versa. The coefficient that couples bulk viscous pressure to shear-stress tensor is found to be orders of magnitude larger than the bulk viscosity itself, suggesting that bulk viscous pressure production owes more to this coupling than to the expansion rate of the system.

Jet energy loss and high $p_T$ photon production in hot quark-gluon plasma

Jet-quenching and photon production at high transverse momentum are studied at RHIC energies, together with the correlation between jets and photons. The energy loss of hard partons traversing the hot QGP is evaluated in the AMY formalism, consistently taking into account both induced gluon emission and elastic collisions. The production of high $p_T$ photons in Au+Au collisions is calculated, incorporating a complete set of photon-production channels. Putting all these ingredients together with a (3+1)-dimensional ideal relativistic hydrodynamical description of the thermal medium, we achieve a good description of the current experimental data. Our results illustrate that the interaction between hard jets and the soft medium is important for a complete understanding of jet quenching, photon production, and photon-hadron correlations in relativistic nuclear collisions.

Radiative and Collisional Energy Loss, and Photon-Tagged Jets at RHIC

The suppression of single jets at high transverse momenta in a quark-gluon plasma is studied at RHIC energies, and the additional information provided by a photon tag is included. The energy loss of hard jets traversing through the medium is evaluated in the AMY formalism, by consistently taking into account the contributions from radiative events and from elastic collisions at leading order in the coupling. The strongly-interacting medium in these collisions is modelled with (3+1)-dimensional ideal relativistic hydrodynamics. Putting these ingredients together with a complete set of photon-production processes, we present a calculation of the nuclear modification of single jets and photon-tagged jets at RHIC.

Radiative and Collisional Jet Energy Loss in a Quark-Gluon Plasma

We calculate radiative and collisional energy loss of hard partons traversing the quark-gluon plasma created at RHIC and compare the respective size of these contributions. We employ the AMY formalism for radiative energy loss and include additionally energy loss by elastic collisions. Our treatment of both processes is complete at leading order in the coupling, and accounts for the probabilistic nature of jet energy loss. We find that a solution of the Fokker-Planck equation for the probability density distributions of partons is necessary for a complete calculation of the nuclear modification factor $R_{AA}$ for pion production in heavy ion collisions. It is found that the magnitude of $R_{AA}$ is sensitive to the inclusion of both collisional and radiative energy loss, while the average energy is less affected by the addition of collisional contributions. We present a calculation of $R_{AA}$ for $π^0$ at RHIC, combining our energy loss formalism with a relativistic (3+1)-dimensional hydrodynamic description of the thermalized medium.

Leading Order Calculation of Shear Viscosity in Hot Quantum Electrodynamics from Diagrammatic Methods

We compute the shear viscosity at leading order in hot Quantum Electrodynamics. Starting from the Kubo relation for shear viscosity, we use diagrammatic methods to write down the appropriate integral equations for bosonic and fermionic effective vertices. We also show how Ward identities can be used to put constraints on these integral equations. One of our main results is an equation relating the kernels of the integral equations with functional derivatives of the full self-energy; it is similar to what is obtained with two-particle-irreducible effective action methods. However, since we use Ward identities as our starting point, gauge invariance is preserved. Using these constraints obtained from Ward identities and also power counting arguments, we select the necessary diagrams that must be resummed at leading order. This includes all non-collinear (corresponding to 2 to 2 scatterings) and collinear (corresponding to 1+N to 2+N collinear scatterings) rungs responsible for the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect. We also show the equivalence between our integral equations obtained from quantum field theory and the linearized Boltzmann equations of Arnold, Moore and Yaffe obtained using effective kinetic theory.

How particles emerge from decaying classical fields in heavy ion collisions: towards a kinetic description of the Glasma

We develop the formalism discussed previously in hep-ph/0601209 and hep-ph/0605246 to construct a kinetic theory that provides insight into the earliest ``Glasma'' stage of a high energy heavy ion collision. Particles produced from the decay of classical fields in the Glasma obey a Boltzmann equation whose novel features include an inhomogeneous source term and new contributions to the collision term. We discuss the power counting associated with the different terms in the Boltzmann equation and outline the transition from the field dominated regime to the particle dominated regime in high energy heavy ion collisions.

Thermal Dileptons at LHC

We predict dilepton invariant-mass spectra for central 5.5 ATeV Pb-Pb collisions at LHC. Hadronic emission in the low-mass region is calculated using in-medium spectral functions of light vector mesons within hadronic many-body theory. In the intermediate-mass region thermal radiation from the Quark-Gluon Plasma, evaluated perturbatively with hard-thermal loop corrections, takes over. An important source over the entire mass range are decays of correlated open-charm hadrons, rendering the nuclear modification of charm and bottom spectra a critical ingredient.

(Multi)Strangeness Production in Pb+Pb collisions at LHC. HIJING/BBar v2.0 predictions

Strangeness and multi-strangeness particles production can be used to explore the initial transient field fluctuations in heavy ion collisions. We emphasize the role played by Junction anti-Junction (JJbar) loops and strong color electric fields (SCF) in these collisions. Transient field fluctuations of SCF on the baryon production in central (0-5%) Pb+Pb collisions at nucleon-nucleon centre of mass energy of 5.5 TeV will be discussed in the framework of HIJING/BBbar v2.0 model, looking in particular to the predicted evolution of nuclear modification factors R_AA from RHIC to LHC energies. Our results indicate the importance of a good description of the baseline elementary p+p collisions at this energy.

SHAREv2: fluctuations and a comprehensive treatment of decay feed-down

This the user's manual for SHARE version 2. SHARE (Statistical Hadronization with Resonances) is a collection of programs designed for the statistical analysis of particle production in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. While the structure of the program remains similar to v1.X, v2 provides several new features such as evaluation of statistical fluctuations of particle yields, and a greater versatility, in particular regarding decay feed-down and input/output structure. This article describes all the new features, with emphasis on statistical fluctuations.

Leading Order Calculation of Electric Conductivity in Hot Quantum Electrodynamics from Diagrammatic Methods

Using diagrammatic methods, we show how the Ward identity can be used to constrain the ladder kernel in transport coefficient calculations. More specifically, we use the Ward identity to determine the necessary diagrams that must be resummed using an integral equation. One of our main results is an equation relating the kernel of the integral equation with functional derivatives of the full self-energy; it is similar to what is obtained with 2PI effective action methods. However, since we use the Ward identity as our starting point, gauge invariance is preserved. Using power counting arguments, we also show which self-energies must be included in the resummation at leading order, including 2 to 2 scatterings and 1 to 2 collinear scatterings with the LPM effect. We show that our quantum field theory result is equivalent to the one of Arnold, Moore and Yaffe obtained using effective kinetic theory. In this paper we restrict our discussion to electrical conductivity in hot QED, but our method can in principle be generalized to other transport coefficients and other theories.
