Measurement of Time-dependent $CP$ Asymmetries in $B^{0}\to K_S^0 ηγ$ Decays

We report a measurement of time-dependent $CP$ violation parameters in ${B^0 \to K_S^0 ηγ}$ decays. The study is based on a data sample, containing ${772 \times 10^6 B\bar{B}}$ pairs, that was collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider. We obtain the $CP$ violation parameters of ${{\cal S} = -1.32 \pm 0.77 {\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.36{\rm (syst.)}}$ and ${{\cal A} = -0.48 \pm 0.41 {\rm (stat.)} \pm 0.07{\rm (syst.)}}$ for the invariant mass of the $K_S^0 η$ system up to 2.1 GeV/$c^2$.

Observation of $Υ(4S)\to η' Υ(1S)$

We report the first observation of the hadronic transition $Υ(4S)\toη'Υ(1S)$, using 496 fb$^{-1}$ data collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. We reconstruct the $η'$ meson through its decays to $ρ^0γ$ and to $π^+π^-η$, with $η\toγγ$. We measure: ${\cal B}(Υ(4S)\toη'Υ(1S))=(3.43\pm 0.88 {\rm(stat.)} \pm 0.21 {\rm(syst.)})\times10^{-5}$, with a significance of 5.7$σ$.

Search for $CP$ violation in the $D^{+}\toπ^{+}π^{0}$ decay at Belle

We search for $CP$ violation in the charged charm meson decay $D^{+}\toπ^{+}π^{0}$, based on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $\rm 921~fb^{-1}$ collected by the Belle experiment at the KEKB $e^{+}e^{-}$ asymmetric-energy collider. The measured $CP$ violating asymmetry is $[+2.31\pm1.24({\rm stat})\pm0.23({\rm syst})]\%$, which is consistent with the standard model prediction and has a significantly improved precision compared to previous results.

Search for light tetraquark states in $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ decays

We search for the $J^{PC}=0^{--}$ and $1^{+-}$ light tetraquark states with masses up to 2.46~GeV/$c^2$ in $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ decays with data samples of $(102\pm 2)$ million and $(158\pm 4)$ million events, respectively, collected with the Belle detector. No significant signals are observed in any of the studied production modes, and 90\% credibility level (C.L.) upper limits on their branching fractions in $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ decays are obtained. The inclusive branching fractions of the $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ decays into final states with $f_1(1285)$ are measured to be ${\cal B}(Υ(1S)\to f_1(1285)+anything)=(46\pm28({\rm stat.})\pm13({\rm syst.}))\times 10^{-4}$ and ${\cal B}(Υ(2S)\to f_1(1285)+anything)=(22\pm15({\rm stat.})\pm6.3({\rm syst.}))\times 10^{-4}$. The measured $χ_{b2} \to J/ψ+ anything$ branching fraction is measured to be $(1.50\pm0.34({\rm stat.})\pm0.22({\rm syst.}))\times 10^{-3}$, and 90\% C.L. upper limits for the $χ_{b0,b1} \to J/ψ+ anything$ branching fractions are found to be $2.3\times 10^{-3}$ and $1.1\times 10^{-3}$, respectively. For ${\cal B}(χ_{b1} \to ω+ anything)$, the branching fraction is measured to be $(4.9\pm1.3({\rm stat.})\pm0.6({\rm syst.}))\times 10^{-2}$. %($<3.68\times 10^{-2}$ at 90\% C.L.). All results reported here are the first measurements for these modes.

Evidence for Isospin Violation and Measurement of $CP$ Asymmetries in $B \to K^{\ast}(892) γ$

We report the first evidence for isospin violation in $B \to K^* γ$ and the first measurement of difference of $CP$ asymmetries between $B^+ \to K^{*+} γ$ and $B^0 \to K^{*0} γ$. This analysis is based on the data sample containing $772 \times 10^6 B\bar{B}$ pairs that was collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB energy-asymmetric $e^+ e^-$ collider. We find evidence for the isospin violation with a significance of 3.1$σ$, $Δ_{0+} = (+6.2 \pm 1.5 ({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.6 ({\rm syst.}) \pm 1.2 (f_{+-}/f_{00}))$\%, where the third uncertainty is due to the uncertainty on the fraction of $B^+B^-$ to $B^0\bar{B}^0$ production in $Υ(4S)$ decays. The measured value is consistent with predictions of the SM. The result for the difference of $CP$ asymmetries is $ΔA_{CP} = (+2.4 \pm 2.8({\rm stat.}) \pm 0.5({\rm syst.}))$\%, consistent with zero. The measured branching fractions and $CP$ asymmetries for charged and neutral $B$ meson decays are the most precise to date. We also calculate the ratio of branching fractions of $B^0 \to K^{*0} γ$ to $B_s^0 \to ϕγ$.

Search for $Λ_c^+\toϕp π^0$ and branching fraction measurement of $Λ_c^+\to K^-π^+ p π^0$

We have searched for the Cabibbo-suppressed decay $Λ_c^+\toϕpπ^0$ in $e^+e^-$ collisions using a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 915 $\rm fb^{-1}$. The data were collected by the Belle experiment at the KEKB $e^+e^-$ asymmetric-energy collider running at or near the $Υ(4S)$ and $Υ(5S)$ resonances. No significant signal is observed, and we set an upper limit on the branching fraction of $\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+\to ϕpπ^0) <15.3\times10^{-5}$ at 90% confidence level. The contribution for nonresonant $Λ_c^+\to K^+K^- pπ^0$ decays is found to be consistent with zero and the corresponding upper limit on its branching fraction is set to be $\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+\to K^+K^-pπ^0)_{\rm NR} <6.3\times10^{-5} $ at 90% confidence level. We also measure the branching fraction for the Cabibbo-favored decay $Λ_c^+\to K^-π^+pπ^0$; the result is $\mathcal{B}(Λ_c^+\to K^-π^+pπ^0)= (4.42\pm0.05\, (\rm stat.) \pm 0.12\, (\rm syst.) \pm 0.16\, (\mathcal{B}_{\rm Norm}))\%$, which is the most precise measurement to date. Finally, we have searched for an intermediate hidden-strangeness pentaquark decay $P^+_s\toϕp$. We see no evidence for this intermediate decay and set an upper limit on the product branching fraction of ${\cal B}(Λ_c^+\to P^+_s π^0)\times {\cal B}(P^+_s\toϕp) <8.3\times 10^{-5}$ at 90% confidence level.

Angular analysis of the $e^+ e^- \to D^{(*) \pm} D^{* \mp}$ process near the open charm threshold using initial-state radiation

We report a new measurement of the exclusive $e^+ e^- \to D^{(*) \pm} D^{*\mp}$ cross sections as a function of the center-of-mass energy from the $D^{(*) \pm} D^{* \mp}$ threshold through $\sqrt{s}=6.0$ GeV with initial-state radiation. The analysis is based on a data sample collected with the Belle detector with an integrated luminosity of $951$ fb$^{-1}$. The accuracy of the cross section measurement is increased by a factor of two over the first Belle study. We perform the first angular analysis of the $e^+ e^- \to D^{* \pm} D^{* \mp}$ process and decompose this exclusive cross section into three components corresponding to the $D^*$ helicities.

Study of $η$ and dipion transitions in $Υ(4S)$ decays to lower bottomonia

We study hadronic transitions between bottomonium states using 496 fb$^{-1}$ data collected at the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric energy $e^{+}e^{-}$ collider. We measure: ${\cal B}(Υ(4S)\toπ^+π^-Υ(1S))=(8.2\pm 0.5 {\rm(stat.)} \pm 0.4 {\rm(syst.)})\times10^{-5}$, ${\cal B}(Υ(4S)\toπ^+π^-Υ(2S))=(7.9\pm 1.0 {\rm(stat.)} \pm 0.4 {\rm(syst.)})\times10^{-5}$, and ${\cal B}(Υ(4S)\toηΥ(1S))=(1.70\pm 0.23 {\rm(stat.)} \pm 0.08 {\rm(syst.)})\times10^{-4}$. We measure the ratio of branching fractions ${\cal R} = {\cal B}(Υ(4S)\toηΥ(1S))/{\cal B}(Υ(4S)\toπ^+π^-Υ(1S)) = 2.07\pm 0.30 {\rm(stat.)} \pm 0.11 {\rm(syst.)}$. We search for the decay $Υ(1^3D_{1,2})\toηΥ(1S)$, but do not find significant evidence for such a transition. We also measure the initial state radiation production cross sections of the $Υ(2S,3S)$ resonances and we find values compatible with the expected ones. Finally, the analysis of the $Υ(4S)\toπ^+π^-Υ(1S)$ events shows indications for a resonant contribution due to the $f_0(980)$ meson.

Invariant-mass and fractional-energy dependence of inclusive production of di-hadrons in $e^+e^-$ annihilation at $\sqrt{s}=$ 10.58 GeV

The inclusive cross sections for di-hadrons of charged pions and kaons ($e^+e^- \rightarrow hhX$) in electron-positron annihilation are reported. They are obtained as a function of the total fractional energy and invariant mass for any di-hadron combination in the same hemisphere as defined by the thrust event-shape variable and its axis. Since same-hemisphere di-hadrons can be assumed to originate predominantly from the same initial parton, di-hadron fragmentation functions are probed. These di-hadron fragmentation functions are needed as an unpolarized baseline in order to quantitatively understand related spin-dependent measurements in other processes and to apply them to the extraction of quark transversity distribution functions in the nucleon. The di-hadron cross sections are obtained from a $655\,{\rm fb}^{-1}$ data sample collected at or near the $Υ(4S)$ resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy $e^+ e^-$ collider.

Testing the gravitational theory with short-period stars around our Galactic Center

Motion of short-period stars orbiting the supermassive black hole in our Galactic Center has been monitored for more than 20 years. These observations are currently offering a new way to test the gravitational theory in an unexplored regime: in a strong gravitational field, around a supermassive black hole. In this proceeding, we present three results: (i) a constraint on a hypothetical fifth force obtained by using 19 years of observations of the two best measured short-period stars S0-2 and S0-38 ; (ii) an upper limit on the secular advance of the argument of the periastron for the star S0-2 ; (iii) a sensitivity analysis showing that the relativistic redshift of S0-2 will be measured after its closest approach to the black hole in 2018.

Search for the $0^{--}$ Glueball in $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ decays

We report the first search for the $J^{PC}=0^{--}$ glueball in $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ decays with data samples of $(102\pm2)$ million and $(158\pm4)$ million events, respectively, collected with the Belle detector. No significant signals are observed in any of the proposed production modes, and the 90\% credibility level upper limits on their branching fractions in $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ decays are obtained. The inclusive branching fractions of the $Υ(1S)$ and $Υ(2S)$ decays into final states with a $χ_{c1}$ are measured to be $\BR(Υ(1S)\to χ_{c1}+ anything) = (1.90\pm 0.43(stat.)\pm 0.14(syst.))\times 10^{-4}$ with an improved precision over prior measurements and $\BR(Υ(2S)\to χ_{c1}+ anything) = (2.24\pm 0.44(stat.)\pm 0.20(syst.))\times 10^{-4}$ for the first time.

Fully gapped superconducting state in Au2Pb: a natural candidate for topological superconductor

We measured the ultra-low-temperature specific heat and thermal conductivity of Au$_2$Pb single crystal, a possible three-dimensional Dirac semimetal with a superconducting transition temperature $T_c \approx$ 1.05 K. The electronic specific heat can be fitted by a two-band s-wave model, which gives the gap amplitudes $Δ_1$(0)/$k_BT_c$ = 1.38 and $Δ_2$(0)/$k_BT_c$ = 5.25. From the thermal conductivity measurements, a negligible residual linear term $κ_0/T$ in zero field and a slow field dependence of $κ_0/T$ at low field are obtained. These results suggest that Au$_2$Pb has a fully gapped superconducting state in the bulk, which is a necessary condition for topological superconductor if Au$_2$Pb is indeed one.

Nature of the Quantum Metal in a Two-Dimensional Crystalline Superconductor

Two-dimensional (2D) materials are not expected to be metals at low temperature due to electron localization. Consistent with this, pioneering studies on thin films reported only superconducting and insulating ground states, with a direct transition between the two as a function of disorder or magnetic field. However, more recent works have revealed the presence of an intermediate metallic state occupying a substantial region of the phase diagram whose nature is intensely debated. Here, we observe such a state in the disorder-free limit of a crystalline 2D superconductor, produced by mechanical co-lamination of NbSe$_2$ in inert atmosphere. Under a small perpendicular magnetic field, we induce a transition from superconductor to the intermediate metallic state. We find a new power law scaling with field in this phase, which is consistent with the Bose metal model where metallic behavior arises from strong phase fluctuations caused by the magnetic field.

Enhanced Raman sideband cooling of caesium atoms in a vapour-loaded magneto-optical trap

We report enhanced three-dimensional degenerated Raman sideband cooling (3D DRSC) of caesium (Cs) atoms in a standard single-cell vapour-loading magneto-optical trap. Our improved scheme involves using a separate repumping laser and optimized lattice detuning. We load $1.5 \times 10^7$ atoms into the Raman lattice with a detuning of -15.5 GHz (to the ground F = 3 state). Enhanced 3D DRSC is used to cool them from 60 $μ$K to 1.7 $μ$K within 12 ms and the number of obtained atoms is about $1.2 \times 10^7$. A theoretical model is proposed to simulate the measured number of trapped atoms. The result shows good agreement with the experimental data. The technique paves the way for loading a large number of ultracold Cs atoms into a crossed dipole trap and efficient evaporative cooling in a single-cell system.

Quasiparticle Interference, quasiparticle interactions and the origin of the charge density-wave in 2H-NbSe$_{2}$

We show that a small number of intentionally introduced defects can be used as a spectroscopic tool to amplify quasiparticle interference in 2H-NbSe$_{2}$, that we measure by scanning tunneling spectroscopic imaging. We show from the momentum and energy dependence of the quasiparticle interference that Fermi surface nesting is inconsequential to charge density wave formation in 2H-NbSe$_{2}$. We demonstrate that by combining quasiparticle interference data with additional knowledge of the quasiparticle band structure from angle resolved photoemission measurements, one can extract the wavevector and energy dependence of the important electronic scattering processes thereby obtaining direct information both about the fermiology and the interactions. In 2H-NbSe$_{2}$, we use this combination to show that the important near-Fermi-surface electronic physics is dominated by the coupling of the quasiparticles to soft mode phonons at a wave vector different from the CDW ordering wave vector.

Fourier analysis of the IR response of van der Waals materials

In this letter, we report on an analytical technique for optical investigations of semitransparent samples. By Fourier transforming optical spectra with Fabry-Perot resonances we extract information about sample thickness and its discrete variations. Moreover, this information is used to recover optical spectra devoid of Fabry-Perot fringes, which simplifies optical modelling, and can reveal previously concealed spectral features. To illustrate its use, we apply our technique to a Si wafer as well as six different cleavable layered materials, including topological insulators, thermoelectrics, and magnetic insulators. In the layered materials, we find strong evidence of large step edges and thickness inhomogeneity, and cannot conclusively exclude the presence of voids in the bulk of cleaved samples. This could strongly affect the interpretation of transport and optical data of crystals with topologically protected surfaces states.

Optical evidence of surface state suppression in Bi based topological insulators

A key challenge in condensed matter research is the optimization of topological insulator (TI) compounds for the study and future application of their unique surface states. Truly insulating bulk states would allow the exploitation of predicted surface state properties, such as protection from backscattering, dissipationless spin-polarized currents, and the emergence of novel particles. Towards this end, major progress was recently made with the introduction of highly resistive Bi$_2$Te$_2$Se, in which surface state conductance and quantum oscillations are observed at low temperatures. Nevertheless, an unresolved and pivotal question remains: while room temperature ARPES studies reveal clear evidence of TI surface states, their observation in transport experiments is limited to low temperatures. A better understanding of this surface state suppression at elevated temperatures is of fundamental interest, and crucial for pushing the boundary of device applications towards room-temperature operation. In this work, we simultaneously measure TI bulk and surface states via temperature dependent optical spectroscopy, in conjunction with transport and ARPES measurements. We find evidence of coherent surface state transport at low temperatures, and propose that phonon mediated coupling between bulk and surface states suppresses surface conductance as temperature rises.

Tuning a Schottky barrier in a photoexcited topological insulator with transient Dirac cone electron-hole asymmetry

The advent of Dirac materials has made it possible to realize two dimensional gases of relativistic fermions with unprecedented transport properties in condensed matter. Their photoconductive control with ultrafast light pulses is opening new perspectives for the transmission of current and information. Here we show that the interplay of surface and bulk transient carrier dynamics in a photoexcited topological insulator can control an essential parameter for photoconductivity - the balance between excess electrons and holes in the Dirac cone. This can result in a strongly out of equilibrium gas of hot relativistic fermions, characterized by a surprisingly long lifetime of more than 50 ps, and a simultaneous transient shift of chemical potential by as much as 100 meV. The unique properties of this transient Dirac cone make it possible to tune with ultrafast light pulses a relativistic nanoscale Schottky barrier, in a way that is impossible with conventional optoelectronic materials.
