Oscillatory surface dichroism of an insulating topological insulator Bi2Te2Se

Using circular dichroism-angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (CD-ARPES), we report a study of the effect of angular momentum transfer between polarized photons and topological surface states on the surface of highly bulk insulating topological insulator Bi2Te2Se. The photoelectron dichroism is found to be strongly modulated by the frequency of the helical photons including a dramatic sign-flip. Our results suggest that the observed dichroism and its sign-flip are consequences of strong coupling between the photon field and the spin-orbit nature of the Dirac modes on the surface. Our studies reveal the intrinsic dichroic behavior of topological surface states and point toward the potential utility of bulk insulating topological insulators in device applications.

Visualizing the Charge Density Wave Transition in 2H-NbSe2 in Real Space

We report the direct observation in real space of the charge density wave (CDW) phase transition in pristine 2H-NbSe2 using atomic-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). We find that static CDW order is established in nanoscale regions in the vicinity of defects at temperatures that are several times the bulk transition temperature Tcdw. On lowering the temperature, the correlation length of these patches increases steadily until CDW order is established in all of space, demonstrating the crucial role played by defects in the physics of the transition region. The nanoscale CDW order has an energy and temperature-independent wavelength. Spectroscopic imaging measurements of the real-space phase of the CDW indicate that an energy gap in NbSe2 occurs at 0.7eV below the Fermi energy in the CDW phase, suggesting that strong electron-lattice interactions and not Fermi surface physics is the dominant cause for CDW formation in NbSe2.

Dirac point spectral weight suppression and surface "gaps" in nonmagnetic and magnetic topological insulators

It is predicted that electrons on the surface of a topological insulator can acquire a mass (massive Dirac fermion) by opening up a gap at the Dirac point when time-reversal symmetry is broken via the out-of-plane magnetization. We report photoemission studies on a series of topological insulator materials focusing on the spectral behavior in the vicinity of the Dirac node. Our results show that the spectral intensity is suppressed resulting in a "gap"-like feature in materials with or without any magnetic impurity or doping. The Zeeman gap in magnetically doped samples, expected to be rather small, is likely masked by the non-magnetic strong spectral weight suppression involving a large energy scale we report. The photoemission spectral weight suppression observed around the Dirac node thus cannot be taken as the sole evidence for a time-reversal symmetry breaking magnetic gap. We discuss a few possible extrinsic and kinematic origins of the Dirac point spectral weight suppression ("gap") observed in many commonly studied topological materials.

Thermoelectric Power of the YbT$_{2}$Zn$_{20}$ (T = Fe, Ru, Os, Ir, Rh, and Co) Heavy Fermions

The thermoelectric power, $S(T)$, of the heavy fermions YbT$_{2}$Zn$_{20}$ ($T$ = Fe, Ru, Os, Ir, Rh, and Co) has been measured to characterize their strong electronic correlations. A large, negative, local minimum in $S(T)$ with approximately -70 $μ$V/K is found for all compounds. From the observed local minimum, the energy scales associated with both the Kondo temperature and the crystalline electric field splitting are deduced and compared to previous specific heat measurements. At low temperatures, $S(T)$ follows a linear temperature dependence, $S(T)$ = $αT$, with an enhanced value of $α$ which is characteristic for a heavy fermion state. In the zero temperature limit, the enhanced $α$ value strongly correlates with the electronic specific heat coefficient, $C(T)/T$, due to the large density of states at the Fermi level.

Observation of Topological Order in the TlBiSe2 class : Probing the "spin" and "phase" on topological insulator surfaces

A topological insulator is characterized by spin-momentum locking on its boundary. The spin momentum locking on the surface of a three dimensional topological insulator leads to the existence of a non-trivial Berry's phase which leads to exotic transport phenomena on topological surfaces. Using spin-sensitive probes (Mott polarimetry), we observe the spin-momentum coupling and uncover the chiral nature of surface electrons in TlBiSe2. We demonstrate that the surface electrons in TlBiSe2 collectively carry a quantum Berry's phase of $π$ and a definite chirality ($η$ = -1, left-handed) associated with its spin-texture or vortex-structure on the Fermi surface on both the top and the bottom surfaces. Our experimental results for the first time not only prove the existence of Z2 topological-order in the bulk but also reveal the existence of helical quasiparticle modes on the topological surface. Spin-texture calculations would be reported elsewhere.

Anomalous spin-momentum locked two-dimensional states in the vicinity of a topological phase transition

We perform spin-resolved and spin-integrated angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on a series of compositions in the BiTl(S1-xSex)2 system, focusing on x-values in the vicinity of the critical point for the topological phase transition (the band inversion composition). We observe quasi two dimensional (2D) states on the outer boundary of the bulk electronic bands in the trivial side (non-inverted regime) of the transition. Systematic spin-sensitive measurements reveal that the observed 2D states are spin-momentum locked, whose spin texture resembles the helical spin texture on the surface of a topological insulator. These anomalous states are observed to be only prominent near the critical point, thus are possibly related to strong precursor states of topological phase transition near the relaxed surface.

Single-Dirac-cone Z2 topological insulator phases in distorted Li2AgSb-class and related quantum critical Li-based spin-orbit compounds

We have extended our new materials class search for the experimental realization of Z2 topological insulators from binary [Bi2Se3-class, Xia et.al., Nature Phys. 5, 398 (2009)] and the ternary [Half-Heusler class, Lin et.al., arXiv:1003.0155v1 (2010); arXiv:1003.2615v1 (2010)] series to non-Heusler Li-based ternary intermetallic series Li2M'X ($M'$=Cu, Ag, and Au, $X$=Sb and Bi) with CuHg2Ti-type structure. We discovered that the distorted-Li2AgSb is a lightweight compound harboring a 3D topological insulator state with Z2=-1 although the groundstate lies near a critical point, whereas the related Li2CuSb-type compounds are topologically trivial. Non-Heusler ternary Li2M'X series (with a number of variant compounds) we identified here is a new platform for deriving novel stoichiometric compounds, artificial quantum-well/heterostructures, nano-wires, nano-ribbons and nanocrystals. We have grown some of these bulk materials (experimental results will be reported separately).

Magnetic Order in TbCo2Zn20 and TbFe2Zn20

We report neutron diffraction studies of TbCo$_2$Zn$_{20}$ and TbFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$, two isostructural compounds which exhibit dramatically different magnetic behavior. In the case of TbCo$_2$Zn$_{20}$, magnetic Bragg peaks corresponding to antiferromagnetic order are observed below $T_N$ $\approx$ 2.5 K with a propagation vector of (0.5 0.5 0.5). On the other hand, TbFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$ undergoes a ferromagnetic transition at temperatures as high as 66 K which shows a high sensitivity to sample-to-sample variations. Two samples of TbFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$ with the same nominal compositions but with substantially different magnetic ordering temperatures ($T_c$ $\approx$ 51 and 66 K) were measured by single crystal neutron diffraction. Structural refinements of the neutron diffraction data find no direct signature of atomic site disorder between the two TbFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$ samples except for subtle differences in the anisotropic thermal parameters. The differences in the anisotropic thermal parameters between the two samples is likely due to very small amounts of disorder. This provides further evidence for the extreme sensitivity of the magnetic properties of TbFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$ to small sample variations, even small amounts of disorder.

Neutron scattering and scaling behavior in URu2Zn20 and YbFe2Zn20

The dynamic susceptibility chi"(deltaE), measured by inelastic neutron scattering measurements, shows a broad peak centered at Emax = 16.5 meV for the cubic actinide compound URu2Zn20 and 7 meV at the (1/2, 1/2, 1/2) zone boundary for the rare earth counterpart compound YbFe2Zn20. For URu2Zn20, the low temperature susceptibility and magnetic specific heat coefficient gamma = Cmag/T take the values chi = 0.011 emu/mole and gamma = 190 mJ/mole-K2 at T = 2 K. These values are roughly three times smaller, and Emax is three times larger, than recently reported for the related compound UCo2Zn20, so that chi and gamma scale inversely with the characteristic energy for spin fluctuations, Tsf = Emax/kB. While chi(T), Cmag(T), and Emax of the 4f compound YbFe2Zn20 are very well described by the Kondo impurity model, we show that the model works poorly for URu2Zn20 and UCo2Zn20, suggesting that the scaling behavior of the actinide compounds arises from spin fluctuations of itinerant 5f electrons.

A new platform for topological quantum phenomena : Topological Insulator states in thermoelectric Heusler-related ternary compounds

Topological insulators (TI) realize a novel state of quantum matter that are distinguished by topological invariants of bulk band structure rather than spontaneously broken symmetries. A number of exotic quantum phenomena have been predicted to exist in multiply-connected geometries which require an enormous amount of materials flexibility. We have extended our previous search for TI materials from binary (Bi2X3 series) to the thermoelectric ternary compounds. We discover that the distorted LuPtSb is the first ternary compound harboring a 3D topological insulator state. We also show that the half-Heusler LuPtSb-type series is a natural platform that hosts a range of candidate compounds, alloys and artificial heterostructures (quantum-wells). We also discovered several different paradigms of trivial and non-trivial topological ordering in this class, including a metallic nontrivial topological state in YAuPb. Some of these materials are grown (results will be reported separately).

Magnetic properties of Gd_xY_{1-x}Fe_2Zn_{20}: dilute, large, $\textbf {S}$ moments in a nearly ferromagnetic Fermi liquid

Single crystals of the dilute, rare earth bearing, pseudo-ternary series, Gd_xY_{1-x}Fe_2Zn_{20} were grown out of Zn-rich solution. Measurements of magnetization, resistivity and heat capacity on Gd_xY_{1-x}Fe_2Zn_{20} samples reveal ferromagnetic order of Gd^{3+} local moments across virtually the whole series ($x \geq 0.02$). The magnetic properties of this series, including the ferromagnetic ordering, the reduced saturated moments at base temperature, the deviation of the susceptibilities from Curie-Weiss law and the anomalies in the resistivity, are understood within the frame work of dilute, $\textbf {S}$ moments (Gd^{3+}) embedded in a nearly ferromagnetic Fermi liquid (YFe_2Zn_{20}). The s-d model is employed to further explain the variation of $T_{\mathrm{C}}$ with x as well as the temperature dependences of of the susceptibilities.

Precise measurements of radio-frequency magnetic susceptibility in (anti)ferromagnetic materials

Dynamic magnetic susceptibility, $χ$, was studied in several intermetallic materials exhibiting ferromagnetic, antiferromagnetic and metamagnetic transitions. Precise measurements by using a 14 MHz tunnel diode oscillator (TDO) allow detailed insight into the field and temperature dependence of $χ$. In particular, local moment ferromagnets show a sharp peak in $χ(T)$ near the Curie temperature, $T_c$. The peak amplitude decreases and shifts to higher temperatures with very small applied dc fields. Anisotropic measurements of CeVSb$_3$ show that this peak is present provided the magnetic easy axis is aligned with the excitation field. In a striking contrast, small moment, itinerant ferromagnets (i.e., ZrZn$_2$) show a broad maximum in $χ(T)$ that responds differently to applied field. We believe that TDO measurements provide a very sensitive way to distinguish between local and itinerant moment magnetic orders. Local moment antiferromagnets do not show a peak at the Néel temperature, $T_N$, but only a sharp decrease of $χ$ below $T_N$ due to the loss of spin-disorder scattering changing the penetration depth of the ac excitation field. Furthermore, we show that the TDO is capable of detecting changes in spin order as well as metamagnetic transitions. Finally, critical scaling of $χ(T,H)$ in the vicinity of $T_C$ is discussed in CeVSb$_3$ and CeAgSb$_2$.

YSix closely related YbT$_2$Zn$_{20}$ (T = Fe, Co, Ru, Rh, Os, Ir) heavy fermion compounds with large local moment degeneracy

Heavy fermion compounds represent one of the most strongly correlated forms of electronic matter and give rise to low temperature states that range from small moment ordering to exotic superconductivity, both of which are often in close proximity to quantum critical points. These strong electronic correlations are associated with the transfer of entropy from the local moment degrees of freedom to the conduction electrons, and, as such, are intimately related to the low temperature degeneracy of the (originally) moment bearing ion. Here we report the discovery of six closely related Yb-based heavy fermion compounds, YbT$_2$Zn$_{20}$, that are members of the larger family of dilute rare earth bearing compounds: RT$_2$Zn$_{20}$ (T = Fe, Co, Ru, Rh, Os, Ir). This discovery doubles the total number of Yb-based heavy fermion materials. Given these compounds' dilute nature, systematic changes in T only weakly perturb the Yb site and allow for insight into the effects of degeneracy on the thermodynamic and transport properties of these model correlated electron systems.

A Multi-wavelength study of 1WGA J1346.5-6255: a new $γ$ Cas analog unrelated to the background supernova remnant G309.2-00.6

1WGA J1346.5-6255 is a ROSAT X-ray source found within the radio lobes of the supernova remnant (SNR) G309.2-00.6. This source also appears to coincide with the bright and early-type star HD 119682, which is in the middle of the galactic open cluster NGC 5281. The radio morphology of the remnant, consisting of two brightened and distorted arcs of emission on opposite sides of the 1WGA J1346.5-6255 source and of a jet-like feature and break in the shell, led to the suggestion that 1WGA J1346.5-6255/G309.2-00.6 is a young analog of the microquasar SS 433 powering the W50 nebula. This motivated us to study this source at X-ray and optical wavelengths. We here present new Chandra observations of 1WGA J1346.5-6255, archival XMM-Newton observations of G309.2-00.6, and optical spectroscopic observations of HD 119682, in order to search for X-ray jets from 1WGA J1346.5-6255, study its association with the SNR, and test for whether HD 119682 represents its optical counterpart. We do not find evidence for jets from 1WGA J1346.5-6255 down to an unabsorbed flux of 2.6E-13 ergs/cm2/s (0.5-7.5 keV), we rule out its association with G309.2-00.6, and we confirm that HD 119682 is its optical counterpart. We derive a distance of 1.2+/-0.3 kpc, which is consistent with the distance estimate to NGC 5281 (1.3+/-0.3 kpc), and much smaller than the distance derived to the SNR G309.2-00.6. We discuss the nature of the source, unveil that HD 119682 is a Be star and suggest it is a new member of the recently proposed group of $γ$-Cas analogs. The Chandra and XMM X-ray lightcurves show variability on timescales of hundreds of seconds, and the presence of a possible period of about 1500 s that could be the rotational period of an accreting neutron star or white dwarf in this $γ$-Cas analog.

High temperature ferromagnetism in GdFe2Zn20: large, local moments embedded in the nearly ferromagnetic Fermi liquid compound YFe2Zn20

The RFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$ series manifests strongly correlated electron behavior for the non-magnetic R = Y member and remarkably high temperature, ferromagnetic ordering ($T_C$ = 86 K) for the local moment bearing R = Gd member (a compound that is less than 5% atomic Gd). In contrast, the isostructural RCo$_2$Zn$_{20}$ series manifests a more typical ordering temperature ($T_N$ = 5.7 K for GdCo$_2$Zn$_{20}$) and YCo$_2$Zn$_{20}$ does not show signs of correlated electron behavior. Studies of R(Fe$_x$Co$_{1-x}$)$_2$Zn$_{20}$ (R = Gd, Y), combined with bandstructure calculations for the end members, reveal that YFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$ is a nearly ferromagnetic Fermi liquid and that the remarkably high $T_C$ associated with GdFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$ is the result of submerging a large local moment into such a highly polarizable matrix. These results indicate that the RFe$_2$Zn$_{20}$ series, and more broadly the RT$_2$Zn$_{20}$ (T = Fe, Co, Ni, Mn, Ru, Rh, Os, Ir, Pt) isostructural family of compounds, offer an exceptionally promising phase space for the study of the interaction between local moment and correlated electron effects near the dilute R limit.
