Stability and collapse of fermions in a binary dipolar boson-fermion 164Dy-161Dy mixture

We suggest a time-dependent mean-field hydrodynamic model for a binary dipolar boson-fermion mixture to study the stability and collapse of fermions in the $^{164}$Dy-$^{161}$Dy mixture. The condition of stability of the dipolar mixture is illustrated in terms of phase diagrams. A collapse is induced in a disk-shaped stable binary mixture by jumping the interspecies contact interaction from repulsive to attractive by the Feshbach resonance technique. The subsequent dynamics is studied by solving the time-dependent mean-field model including three-body loss due to molecule formation in boson-fermion and boson-boson channels. Collapse and fragmentation in the fermions after subsequent explosions are illustrated. The anisotropic dipolar interaction leads to anisotropic fermionic density distribution during collapse. The present study is carried out in three-dimensional space using realistic values of dipolar and contact interactions.

Stability of trapped degenerate dipolar Bose and Fermi gases

Trapped degenerate dipolar Bose and Fermi gases of cylindrical symmetry with the polarization vector along the symmetry axis are only stable for the strength of dipolar interaction below a critical value. In the case of bosons, the stability of such a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) is investigated for different strengths of contact and dipolar interactions using variational approximation and numerical solution of a mean-field model. In the disk shape, with the polarization vector perpendicular to the plane of the disk, the atoms experience an overall dipolar repulsion and this fact should contribute to the stability. However, a complete numerical solution of the dynamics leads to the collapse of a strongly disk-shaped dipolar BEC due to the long-range anisotropic dipolar interaction. In the case of fermions, the stability of a trapped single-component degenerate dipolar Fermi gas is studied including the Hartree-Fock exchange and Brueckner-Goldstone correlation energies in the local density approximation valid for a large number of atoms. Estimates for the maximum allowed number of polar Bose and Fermi molecules in BEC and degenerate Fermi gas are given.

A dipolar droplet bound in a trapped Bose-Einstein condensate

We study the statics and dynamics of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) droplet bound by inter-species contact interaction in a trapped non-dipolar BEC. Our findings are demonstrated in terms of stability plots of a dipolar 164Dy droplet bound in a trapped non-dipolar 87Rb BEC with a variable number of 164Dy atoms and the inter-species scattering length. A trapped non-dipolar BEC of a fixed number of atoms can only bind a dipolar droplet containing atoms less than a critical number for the inter-species scattering length between two critical values. The shape and size (statics) as well as the small breathing oscillation (dynamics) of the dipolar BEC droplet are studied using the numerical and variational solutions of a mean-field model. We also suggest an experimental procedure for achieving such a 164Dy droplet by relaxing the trap on the 164Dy BEC in a trapped binary 87Rb-164Dy mixture.

Mixing, demixing, and structure formation in a binary dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate

We study static properties of disk-shaped binary dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates of $^{168}$Er-$^{164}$Dy and $^{52}$Cr-$^{164}$Dy mixtures under the action of inter- and intra-species contact and dipolar interactions and demonstrate the effect of dipolar interaction using the mean-field approach. Throughout this study we use realistic values of inter- and intra-species dipolar interactions and the intra-species scattering lengths and consider the inter-species scattering length as a parameter. The stability of the binary mixture is illustrated through phase plots involving number of atoms of the species. The binary system always becomes unstable as the number of atoms increases beyond a certain limit. As the inter-species scattering length increases corresponding to more repulsion, an overlapping mixed state of the two species changes to a separated demixed configuration. During transition from a mixed to a demixed configuration as the inter-species scattering length is increased for parameters just below the stability line, the binary condensate shows special structures in density in the form of red-blood-cell-like biconcave and Saturn-ring-like shapes, which are direct manifestations of dipolar interaction.

Dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate soliton on a two-dimensional optical lattice

Using a three-dimensional mean-field model we study one-dimensional dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) solitons on a weak two-dimensional (2D) square and triangular optical lattice (OL) potentials placed perpendicular to the polarization direction. The stabilization against collapse and expansion of these solitons for a fixed dipolar interaction and a fixed number of atoms is possible for short-range atomic interaction lying between two critical limits. The solitons collapse below the lower limit and escapes to infinity above the upper limit. One can also stabilize identical tiny BEC solitons arranged on the 2D square OL sites forming a stable 2D array of interacting droplets when the OL sites are filled with a filling factor of 1/2 or less. Such an array is unstable when the filling factor is made more than 1/2 by occupying two adjacent sites of OL. These stable 2D arrays of dipolar superfluid BEC solitons are quite similar to the recently studied dipolar Mott insulator states on 2D lattice in the Bose-Hubbard model by Capogrosso-Sansone et al. [B. Capogrosso-Sansone, C. Trefzger, M. Lewenstein, P. Zoller, G. Pupillo, Phys. Rev. Lett. 104 (2010) 125301].

Dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in a ring or in a shell

We study properties of a trapped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a circular ring or a spherical shell using the mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii equation. In the case of the ring-shaped trap we consider different orientations of the ring with respect to the polarization direction of the dipoles. In the presence of long-range anisotropic dipolar and short-range contact interactions, the anisotropic density distribution of the dipolar BEC in both traps is discussed in detail. The stability condition of the dipolar BEC in both traps is illustrated in phase plot of dipolar and contact interactions. We also study and discuss the properties of a vortex dipolar BEC in these traps.

Ultracold collisions between two light indistinguishable diatomic molecules: elastic and rotational energy transfer in HD+HD

A close coupling quantum-mechanical calculation is performed for rotational energy transfer in a HD+HD collision at very low energy, down to the ultracold temperatures: $T \sim 10^{-8}$ K. A global six-dimensional H$_2$-H$_2$ potential energy surface is adopted from a previous work [Boothroyd {\it et al.}, J. Chem. Phys., {\bf 116}, 666 (2002).] State-resolved integral cross sections $σ_{ij\rightarrow i'j'}(\varepsilon_{kin})$ of different quantum-mechanical rotational transitions $ij\rightarrow i'j'$ in the HD molecules and corresponding state-resolved thermal rate coefficients $k_{ij\rightarrow i'j'}(T)$ have been computed. Additionally, for comparison, H$_2$+H$_2$ calculations for a few selected rotational transitions have also been performed. The hydrogen and deuterated hydrogen molecules are treated as rigid rotors in this work. A pronounced isotope effect is identified in the cross sections of these collisions at low and ultracold temperatures.

A comparative study of the low energy HD+o-/p-H2 rotational excitation/de-excitation collisions and elastic scattering

The Diep and Johnson (DJ) H$_2$-H$_2$ potential energy surface (PES) obtained from the first principles [P. Diep, K. Johnson, J. Chem. Phys. 113, 3480 (2000); 114, 222 (2000)], has been adjusted through appropriate rotation of the three-dimensional coordinate system and applied to low-temperature ($T<300$ K) HD+$o$-/$p$-H$_2$ collisions of astrophysical interest. A non-reactive quantum mechanical close-coupling method is used to carry out the computation for the total rotational state-to-state cross sections $σ_{j_1j_2\rightarrow j'_1j'_2}(ε)$ and corresponding thermal rate coefficients $k_{j_1j_2\rightarrow j'_1j'_2}(T)$. A rather satisfactory agreement has been obtained between our results computed with the modified DJ PES and with the newer H$_4$ PES [A.I. Boothroyd, P.G. Martin, W.J. Keogh, M.J. Peterson, J. Chem. Phys. 116, 666 (2002)], which is also applied in this work. A comparative study with previous results is presented and discussed. Significant differences have been obtained for few specific rotational transitions in the H$_2$/HD molecules between our results and previous calculations. The low temperature data for $k_{j_1j_2\rightarrow j'_1j'_2}(T)$ calculated in this work can be used in a future application such as a new computation of the HD cooling function of primordial gas, which is important in the astrophysics of the early Universe.

Dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate for large scattering length

A uniform dilute Bose gas of known density has a universal behavior as the atomic scattering length tends to infinity at unitarity while most of its properties are determined by a universal parameter $ξ$ relating the energies of the noninteracting and unitary gases. The usual mean-field equation is not valid in this limit and beyond mean-field corrections become important. We use a dynamical model including such corrections to investigate a trapped disk-shaped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and a dipolar BEC vortex for large scattering length. We study the sensitivity of our results on the parameter $ξ$ and discuss the possibility of extracting the value of this parameter from experimental observables.

Two-dimensional dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate bright and vortex solitons on one-dimensional optical lattice

By solving the three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation we generate two-dimensional axially-symmetric and anisotropic dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate bright solitons, for repulsive atomic interaction, stabilized by only a weak one-dimensional optical lattice (OL) aligned along and perpendicular, respectively, to the dipole polarization direction. In the former case vortex solitons can also be created. We show that it is possible to make a stable array of small interacting axially-symmetric dipolar solitons put on alternate OL sites. Further, we demonstrate the elastic nature of the collision of two such solitons.

Anisotropic sound and shock waves in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate

We study the propagation of anisotropic sound and shock waves in dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in three dimensions (3D) as well as in quasi-two (2D, disk shape) and quasi-one (1D, cigar shape) dimensions using the mean-field approach. In 3D, the propagation of sound and shock waves are distinct in directions parallel and perpendicular to dipole axis with the appearance of instability above a critical value corresponding to attraction. Similar instability appears in 1D and not in 2D. The numerical anisotropic Mach angle agrees with theoretical prediction. The numerical sound velocity in all cases agrees with that calculated from Bogoliubov theory. A movie of the anisotropic wave propagation in a dipolar condensate is made available as supplementary material.

Matter-wave localization in a weakly perturbed optical lattice

By numerical solution and variational approximation of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we studied the localization of a noninteracting and weakly-interacting Bose-Einstein condensate in a weakly perturbed optical lattice in one and three dimensions. The perturbation achieved through a weak delocalizing expulsive or a linear potential as well as a weak localizing harmonic potential removes the periodicity of the optical lattice and leads to localization. We also studied some dynamics of the localized state confirming its stability.

Numerical and variational solutions of the dipolar Gross-Pitaevskii equation in reduced dimensions

We suggest a simple Gaussian Lagrangian variational scheme for the reduced time-dependent quasi-one- and quasi-two-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equations of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in cigar and disk configurations, respectively. The variational approximation for stationary states and breathing oscillation dynamics in reduced dimensions agrees well with the numerical solution of the GP equation even for moderately large short-range and dipolar nonlinearities. The Lagrangian variational scheme also provides much physical insight about soliton formation in dipolar BEC.

Localization of a Bose-Fermi mixture in a bichromatic optical lattice

We study the localization of a cigar-shaped super-fluid Bose-Fermi mixture in a quasi-periodic bichromatic optical lattice (OL) for inter-species attraction and intra-species repulsion. The mixture is described by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation for the bosons, coupled to a hydrodynamic mean-field equation for fermions at unitarity. We confirm the existence of the symbiotic localized states in the Bose-Fermi mixture and Anderson localization of the Bose component in the interacting Bose-Fermi mixture on a bichromatic OL. The phase diagram in boson and fermion numbers showing the regions of the symbiotic and Anderson localization of the Bose component is presented. Finally, the stability of symbiotic and Anderson localized states is established under small perturbations.

Dynamics of gap solitons in a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate on a three-dimensional optical lattice

We suggest and study the stable disk- and cigar-shaped gap solitons of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate of $^{52}$Cr atoms localized in the lowest band gap by three optical-lattice (OL) potentials along orthogonal directions. The one-dimensional version of these solitons of experimental interest confined by an OL along the dipole moment direction and harmonic traps in transverse directions is also considered. Important dynamics of (i) breathing oscillation of a gap soliton upon perturbation and (ii) dragging of a gap soliton by a moving lattice along axial $z$ direction demonstrates the stability of gap solitons. A movie clip of dragging of three-dimensional gap soliton is included.

Dynamics of quasi-one-dimensional bright and vortex solitons of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate with repulsive atomic interaction

By numerical and variational analysis of the three-dimensional Gross-Pitaevskii equation we study the formation and dynamics of bright and vortex-bright solitons in a cigar-shaped dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate for large repulsive atomic interactions. Phase diagram showing the region of stability of the solitons is obtained. We also study the dynamics of breathing oscillation of the solitons as well as the collision dynamics of two solitons at large velocities. Two solitons placed side-by-side at rest coalesce to form a stable bound soliton molecule due to dipolar attraction.

Self-trapping of a binary Bose-Einstein condensate induced by interspecies interaction

The problem of self-trapping of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and a binary BEC in an optical lattice (OL) and double well (DW) is studied using the mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii equation. For both DW and OL, permanent self-trapping occurs in a window of the repulsive nonlinearity $g$ of the GP equation: $g_{c1}<g<g_{c2}$. In case of OL, the critical nonlinearities $g_{c1}$ and $g_{c2}$ correspond to a window of chemical potentials $μ_{c1}<μ<μ_{c2}$ defining the band gap(s) of the periodic OL. The permanent self-trapped BEC in an OL usually represents a breathing oscillation of a stable stationary gap soliton. The permanent self-trapped BEC in a DW, on the other hand, is a dynamically stabilized state without any stationary counterpart. For a binary BEC with intraspecies nonlinearities outside this window of nonlinearity, a permanent self trapping can be induced by tuning the interspecies interaction such that the effective nonlinearities of the components fall in the above window.

Localization of collisionally inhomogeneous condensates in a bichromatic optical lattice

By direct numerical simulation and variational solution of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we studied the stationary and dynamic characteristics of a cigar-shaped, localized, collisionally inhomogeneous Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a one-dimensional bichromatic quasi-periodic optical-lattice potential, as used in a recent experiment on the localization of a Bose-Einstein condensate [Roati et al., Nature (London) {\bf 453}, 895 (2008)]. The effective potential characterizing the spatially modulated nonlinearity is obtained. It is found that the collisional inhomogeneity has influence not only on the central region but also on the tail of the Bose-Einstein condensate. The influence depends on the sign and value of the spatially modulated nonlinearity coefficient. We also demonstrate the stability of the stationary localized stat$ performing a standard linear stability analysis. Where possible, the numerical results are shown to be in good agreement with the variational results.
