Fortran programs for the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation in a fully anisotropic trap

We develop simple numerical algorithms for both stationary and non-stationary solutions of the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) equation describing the properties of Bose-Einstein condensates at ultra low temperatures. In particular, we consider algorithms involving real and imaginary-time propagation based on a split-step Crank-Nicolson method. In a one-space-variable form of the GP equation we consider the one-dimensional linear, two-dimensional circularly symmetric, and the three-dimensional spherically-symmetric traps. In the two-space-variable form we consider the GP equation in two-dimensional anisotropic and three-dimensional axially-symmetric traps. The fully-anisotropic three-dimensional GP equation is also considered. Numerical results for the chemical potential and root-mean-square size of stationary states are reported using imaginary-time propagation programs for all the cases and compared with previously obtained results. Also presented are numerical results of non-stationary oscillation for different trap symmetries using real-time propagation programs. A set of convenient working codes developed in Fortran 77 are also provided for all these cases (twelve programs in all). In the case of two or three space variables, {Fortran 90/95 versions provide some simplification over the Fortran 77 programs}, and these programs are also included (six programs in all).

Dimensional reduction of a binary Bose-Einstein condensate in mixed dimensions

We present effective reduced equations for the study of a binary Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC), where the confining potentials of the two BEC components have distinct asymmetry so that the components belong to different space dimensions as in a recent experiment [G. Lamporesi et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 104, 153202 (2010)]. Starting from a binary three-dimensional (3D) Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) and using a Lagrangian variational approach we derive a binary effective nonlinear Schroedinger equation with components in different reduced dimensions, e. g., the first component in one dimension and the second in two dimensions as appropriate to represent a cigar-shaped BEC coupled to a disk-shaped BEC. We demonstrate that the effective reduced binary equation, which depend on the geometry of the system, is quite reliable when compared with the binary 3D GPE and can be efficiently used to perform numerical simulation and analytical calculation for the investigation of static and dynamic properties of a binary BEC in mixed dimensions.

Localization of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate in a bichromatic optical lattice

By numerical simulation and variational analysis of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation we study the localization, with an exponential tail, of a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate (DBEC) of $^{52}$Cr atoms in a three-dimensional bichromatic optical-lattice (OL) generated by two monochromatic OL of incommensurate wavelengths along three orthogonal directions. For a fixed dipole-dipole interaction, a localized state of a small number of atoms ($\sim 1000$) could be obtained when the short-range interaction is not too attractive or not too repulsive. A phase diagram showing the region of stability of a DBEC with short-range interaction and dipole-dipole interaction is given.

Matter-wave localization in a random potential

By numerical and variational solution of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation, we studied the localization of a noninteracting and weakly-interacting Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a disordered cold atom lattice and a speckle potential. In the case of a single BEC fragment, the variational analysis produced good results. For a weakly disordered potential, the localized BECs are found to have an exponential tail as in weak Anderson localization. We also investigated the expansion of a noninteracting BEC in these potential. We find that the BEC will be locked in an appropriate localized state after an initial expansion and will execute breathing oscillation around a mean shape when a BEC at equilibrium in a harmonic trap is suddenly released into a disorder potential.

Spatially-antisymmetric localization of matter wave in a bichromatic optical lattice

By direct numerical simulation of the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation using the split-step Fourier spectral method we study the double-humped localization of a cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a one-dimensional bichromatic quasi-periodic optical-lattice potential, as used in a recent experiment on the localization of a BEC [Roati et al., Nature 453, 895 (2008)]. Such states are spatially antisymmetric and are excited modes of Anderson localization. Where possible, we have compared the numerical results with a variational analysis. We also demonstrate the stability of the localized double-humped BEC states under small perturbation.

Spontaneous symmetry breaking of Bose-Fermi mixtures in double-well potentials

We study the spontaneous symmetry breaking (SSB) of a superfluid Bose-Fermi (BF) mixture in a double-well potential (DWP). The mixture is described by the Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) for the bosons, coupled to an equation for the order parameter of the Fermi superfluid, which is derived from the respective density functional in the unitarity limit (a similar model applies to the BCS regime too). Straightforward SSB in the degenerate Fermi gas loaded into a DWP is impossible, as it requires an attractive self-interaction, while the intrinsic nonlinearity in the Fermi gas is repulsive. Nonetheless, we demonstrate that the symmetry breaking is possible in the mixture with attraction between fermions and bosons, like 40K and 87Rb. Numerical results are represented by dependencies of asymmetry parameters for both components on particle numbers of the mixture, N_F and N_B, and by phase diagrams in the (N_F,N_B) plane, which displays regions of symmetric and asymmetric ground states. The dynamical picture of the SSB, induced by a gradual transformation of the single-well potential into the DWP, is reported too. An analytical approximation is proposed for the case when GPE for the boson wave function may be treated by means of the Thomas-Fermi (TF) approximation. Under a special linear relation between N_F and N_B, the TF approximation allows us to reduce the model to a single equation for the fermionic function, which includes competing repulsive and attractive nonlinear terms. The latter one directly displays the mechanism of the generation of the effective attraction in the Fermi superfluid, mediated by the bosonic component of the mixture.

Localization of a Bose-Einstein condensate vortex in a bichromatic optical lattice

By numerical simulation of the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation we show that a weakly interacting or noninteracting Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) vortex can be localized in a three-dimensional bichromatic quasi-periodic optical-lattice (OL) potential generated by the superposition of two standing-wave polarized laser beams with incommensurate wavelengths. This is a generalization of the localization of a BEC in a one-dimensional bichromatic OL as studied in a recent experiment [Roati et al., Nature 453, 895 (2008)]. We demonstrate the stability of the localized state by considering its time evolution in the form of a stable breathing oscillation in a slightly altered potential for a large period of time. {Finally, we consider the localization of a BEC in a random 1D potential in the form of several identical repulsive spikes arbitrarily distributed in space.

BCS-BEC crossover in a trapped Fermi super-fluid using a density-functional equation

We derive a generalized time-dependent Galilean-invariant density-functional (DF) equation appropriate to study the stationary and non-stationary properties of a trapped Fermi super-fluid in the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) to Bose-Einstein condensation (BCS) crossover. This equation is equivalent to a quantum hydrodynamical equation for a Fermi super-fluid. The bulk chemical potential of this equation has the proper (model-independent) dependence on the Fermi-Fermi scattering length in the BCS and BEC limits. We apply this DF equation to the study of stationary density profile and size of a cigar-shaped Fermi super-fluid of $^6$Li atoms and the results are in good agreement with the experiment of Bartenstein {\it et al.} in the BCS-BEC crossover. We also apply the DF equation to the study of axial and radial breathing oscillation and our results for these frequencies are in good agreement with experiments in the BCS-BEC crossover.

Symmetry breaking in a localized interacting binary BEC in a bi-chromatic optical lattice

By direct numerical simulation of the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation using the split-step Fourier spectral method we study different aspects of the localization of a cigar-shaped interacting binary (two-component) Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a one-dimensional bi-chromatic quasi-periodic optical-lattice potential, as used in a recent experiment on the localization of a BEC [Roati et al., Nature 453, 895 (2008)]. We consider two types of localized states: (i) when both localized components have a maximum of density at the origin x=0, and (ii) when the first component has a maximum of density and the second a minimum of density at x=0. In the non-interacting case the density profiles are symmetric around x=0. We numerically study the breakdown of this symmetry due to inter-species and intra-species interaction acting on the two components. Where possible, we have compared the numerical results with a time-dependent variational analysis. We also demonstrate the stability of the localized symmetry-broken BEC states under small perturbation.

Self-trapping of a Fermi super-fluid in a double-well potential in the BEC-unitarity crossover

We derive a generalized Gross-Pitaevskii density-functional equation appropriate to study the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of dimers formed of singlet spin-half Fermi pairs in the BEC-unitarity crossover while the dimer-dimer scattering length $a$ changes from 0 to $\infty$. Using an effective one-dimensional form of this equation, we study the phenomenon of dynamical self-trapping of a cigar-shaped Fermi super-fluid in the entire BEC-unitarity crossover in a double-well potential. A simple two-mode model is constructed to provide analytical insights. We also discuss the consequence of our study on the self-trapping of an atomic BEC in a double-well potential.

Mean-field equations for cigar- and disk-shaped Bose and Fermi superfluids

Starting from the three-dimensional (3D) time-dependent nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equation for a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and density functional (DF) equation for a Fermi superfluid at the unitarity and Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) limits, we derive effective one- (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) mean-field equations, respectively, for the dynamics of a trapped cigar- and disk-shaped BEC and Fermi superfluid by using the adiabatic approximation. The reduced 1D and 2D equations for a cigar- and disk-shaped Fermi superfluid have simple analytic nonlinear terms and at unitarity produce results for stationary properties and non-stationary breathing oscillation and free expansion in excellent agreement with the solution of the full 3D equation.

Localization of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a bichromatic optical lattice

By direct numerical simulation of the time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii equation we study different aspects of the localization of a non-interacting ideal Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a one-dimensional bichromatic quasi-periodic optical-lattice potential. Such a quasi-periodic potential, used in a recent experiment on the localization of a BEC [Roati et al., Nature 453, 895 (2008)], can be formed by the superposition of two standing-wave polarized laser beams with different wavelengths. We investigate the effect of the variation of optical amplitudes and wavelengths on the localization of a non-interacting BEC. We also simulate the non-linear dynamics when a harmonically trapped BEC is suddenly released into a quasi-periodic potential, {as done experimentally in a laser speckle potential [Billy et al., Nature 453, 891 (2008)]$ We finally study the destruction of the localization in an interacting BEC due to the repulsion generated by a positive scattering length between the bosonic atoms.

Universal behavior of a trapped Fermi superfluid in the BCS-unitarity crossover

From an extensive calculation of static properties of a trapped Fermi superfluid at zero temperature using a density-functional formulation, we demonstrate a universal behavior of its observables, such as energy, chemical potential, radius etc., over the crossover from the BCS limit to unitarity leading to scaling over many orders of magnitude in fermion number. This scaling allows to predict the static properties of the system, with a large number ($\sim 10^5$) of fermions, over the crossover with an error of 1-2%, from the knowledge of those for a small number ($\sim 10$) of fermions.

Effective Nonlinear Schrödinger Equations for Cigar-Shaped and Disk-Shaped Fermi Superfluids at Unitarity

In the case of tight transverse confinement (cigar-shaped trap) the three-dimensional (3D) nonlinear Schrödinger equation, describing superfluid Fermi atoms at unitarity (infinite scattering length $|a|\to \infty$), is reduced to an effective one-dimensional form by averaging over the transverse coordinates. The resultant effective equation is a 1D nonpolynomial Schrodinger equation, which produces results in good agreement with the original 3D one. In the limit of small and large fermion number $N$ the nonlinearity is of simple power-law type. A similar reduction of the 3D theory to a two-dimensional form is also performed for a tight axial confinement (disk-shaped trap). The resultant effective 2D nonpolynomial equation also produces results in agreement with the original 3D equation and has simple power-law nonlinearity for small and large $N$. For both cigar- and disk-shaped superfluids our nonpolynomial Schrödinger equations are quite attractive for phenomenological application.

Superfluid Bose-Fermi mixture from weak-coupling to unitarity

We investigate the zero-temperature properties of a superfluid Bose-Fermi mixture by introducing a set of coupled Galilei-invariant nonlinear Schrödinger equations valid from weak-coupling to unitarity. The Bose dynamics is described by a Gross-Pitaevskii-type equation including beyond-mean-field corrections possessing the correct weak-coupling and unitarity limits. The dynamics of the two-component Fermi superfluid is described by a density-functional equation including beyond-mean-field terms with correct weak-coupling and unitarity limits. The present set of equations is equivalent to the equations of generalized superfluid hydrodynamics, which take into account also surface effects. The equations describe the mixture properly as the Bose-Bose repulsive (positive) and Fermi-Fermi attractive (negative) scattering lengths are varied from zero to infinity in the presence of a Bose-Fermi interaction. The present model is tested numerically as the Bose-Bose and Fermi-Fermi scattering lengths are varied over wide ranges covering the weak-coupling to unitarity transition.

Gap solitons in a model of a superfluid fermion gas in optical lattices

We consider a dynamical model for a Fermi gas in the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) superfluid state, trapped in a combination of a 1D or 2D optical lattice (OL) and a tight parabolic potential acting in the transverse direction(s). The model is based on an equation for the order parameter (wave function), which is derived from the energy density for the weakly coupled BCS superfluid. The equation includes a nonlinear self-repulsive term of power 7/3, which accounts for the Fermi pressure. Reducing the equation to the 1D or 2D form, we construct families of stable 1D and 2D gap solitons (GSs) by means of numerical simulations, which are guided by the variational approximation (VA). The GSs are, chiefly, compact objects trapped in a single cell of the OL potential. In the linear limit, the VA predicts almost exact positions of narrow Bloch bands that separate the semi-infinite and first finite gaps, as well as the first and second finite ones. Families of stable even and odd bound states of 1D GSs are constructed too. We also demonstrate that the GS can be dragged without much distortion by an OL moving at a moderate velocity ($\sim $ 1 mm/s, in physical units). The predicted GSs contain $\sim 10^{3}-10^{4}$ and $\sim 10^{3}$ atoms per 1D and 2D settings, respectively.

Semi-classical scattering in two dimensions

The semi-classical limit of quantum-mechanical scattering in two dimensions (2D) is developed. We derive the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin and Eikonal results for 2D scattering. No backward or forward glory scattering is present in 2D. Other phenomena, such as rainbow or orbiting do show up.

Nonlinear Schrödinger equation for a superfluid Fermi gas from BCS to Bose crossover

We introduce a quasi-analytic nonlinear Schrödinger equation with beyond mean-field corrections to describe the dynamics of a zero-temperature dilute superfluid Fermi gas in the crossover from the weak-coupling Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) regime, where $k_F|a| \ll 1$ with $a$ the s-wave scattering length and $k_F$ the Fermi momentum, through the unitarity limit, $k_Fa \to \pm \infty$, to the Bose regime where $k_Fa >0$. The energy of our model is parametrized using the known asymptotic behavior in the BCS, Bose, and the unitarity limits and is in excellent agreement with accurate Green function Monte Carlo calculations. The model generates good results for frequencies of collective breathing oscillation of a trapped Fermi superfluid.
