Breathing skyrmions in chiral antiferromagnets

Breathing oscillations of skyrmions in chiral antiferromagnets can be excited by a temporal modification of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction or magnetocrystalline anisotropy strength. We employ an adiabatic approximation and derive a formula for the potential that directly implies breathing oscillations. We study the nonlinear regime and the features of larger amplitude oscillations. We show that there is a maximum amplitude supported by the potential. As a consequence, we predict theoretically and observe numerically skyrmion annihilation events due to excitation of large amplitude breathing oscillations. The process is efficient when the skyrmion is mildly excited so that its radius initially grows, while the annihilation event is eventually induced by the internal breathing dynamics. We reveal the counter-intuitive property that the skyrmion possesses a nonzero kinetic energy at the moment of its annihilation. Finally, the frequency of small amplitude breathing oscillations is determined.

Delocalization of wave packets in disordered nonlinear chains

We consider the spatiotemporal evolution of a wave packet in disordered nonlinear Schrödinger and anharmonic oscillator chains. In the absence of nonlinearity all eigenstates are spatially localized with an upper bound on the localization length (Anderson localization). Nonlinear terms in the equations of motion destroy Anderson localization due to nonintegrability and deterministic chaos. At least a finite part of an initially localized wave packet will subdiffusively spread without limits. We analyze the details of this spreading process. We compare the evolution of single site, single mode and general finite size excitations, and study the statistics of detrapping times. We investigate the properties of mode-mode resonances, which are responsible for the incoherent delocalization process.

Groebli solution for three magnetic vortices

The dynamics of N point vortices in a fluid is described by the Helmholtz-Kirchhoff (HK) equations which lead to a completely integrable Hamiltonian system for N=2 or 3 but chaotic dynamics for N>3. Here we consider a generalization of the HK equations to describe the dynamics of magnetic vortices within a collective-coordinate approximation. In particular, we analyze in detail the dynamics of a system of three magnetic vortices by a suitable generalization of the solution for three point vortices in an ordinary fluid obtained by Groebli more than a century ago. The significance of our results for the dynamics of ferromagnetic elements is briefly discussed.

Absence of Wavepacket Diffusion in Disordered Nonlinear Systems

We study the spreading of an initially localized wavepacket in two nonlinear chains (discrete nonlinear Schroedinger and quartic Klein-Gordon) with disorder. Previous studies suggest that there are many initial conditions such that the second moment of the norm and energy density distributions diverge as a function of time. We find that the participation number of a wavepacket does not diverge simultaneously. We prove this result analytically for norm-conserving models and strong enough nonlinearity. After long times the dynamical state consists of a distribution of nondecaying yet interacting normal modes. The Fourier spectrum shows quasiperiodic dynamics. Assuming this result holds for any initially localized wavepacket, a limit profile for the norm/energy distribution with infinite second moment should exist in all cases which rules out the possibility of slow energy diffusion (subdiffusion). This limit profile could be a quasiperiodic solution (KAM torus).

Rotating vortex dipoles in ferromagnets

Vortex-antivortex pairs are localized excitations and have been found to be spontaneously created in magnetic elements. In the case that the vortex and the antivortex have opposite polarities the pair has a nonzero topological charge, and it behaves as a rotating vortex dipole. We find theoretically, and confirm numerically, the form of the energy as a function of the angular momentum of the system and the associated rotation frequencies. We discuss the process of annihilation of the pair which changes the topological charge of the system by unity while its energy is monotonically decreasing. Such a change in the topological charge affects profoundly the dynamics in the magnetic system. We finally discuss the connection of our results with Bloch Points (BP) and the implications for BP dynamics.

Vortex lattices in Bose-Einstein condensates with Dipolar Interactions Beyond the Weak Interaction Limit

We study the ground states of rotating atomic Bose-Einstein condensates with dipolar interactions. We present the results of numerical studies on a periodic geometry which show vortex lattice ground states of various symmetries: triangular and square vortex lattices, "stripe crystal" and "bubble crystal". We present the phase diagram (for systems with a large number of vortices) as a function of the ratio of dipolar to contact interactions and of the chemical potential. We discuss the experimental requirements for observing transitions between vortex lattice groundstates via dipolar interactions. We finally investigate the stability of mean-field supersolid phases of a quasi-2D non-rotating Bose gas with dipolar interactions.

Virial theorems for vortex states in a confined Bose-Einstein condensate

We derive a class of virial theorems which provide stringent tests of both analytical and numerical calculations of vortex states in a confined Bose-Einstein condensate. In the special case of harmonic confinement we arrive at the somewhat surprising conclusion that the linear moments of the particle density, as well as the linear momentum, must vanish even in the presence of off-center vortices which lack axial or reflection symmetry. Illustrations are provided by some analytical results in the limit of a dilute gas, and by a numerical calculation of a class of single and double vortices at intermediate couplings. The effect of anharmonic confinement is also discussed.

Single vortex states in a confined Bose-Einstein condensate

It has been demonstrated experimentally that non-axially symmetric vortices precess around the centre of a Bose-Einstein condensate. Two types of single vortex states have been observed, usually referred to as the S-vortex and the U-vortex. We study theoretically the single vortex excitations in spherical and elongated condensates as a function of the interaction strength. We solve numerically the Gross-Pitaevskii equation and calculate the angular momentum as a function of precession frequency. The existence of two types of vortices means that we have two different precession frequencies for each angular momentum value. As the interaction strength increases the vortex lines bend and the precession frequencies shift to lower values. We establish that for given angular momentum the S-vortex has higher energy than the U-vortex in a rotating elongated condensate. We show that the S-vortex is related to the solitonic vortex which is a nonlinear excitation in the nonrotating system. For small interaction strengths the S-vortex is related to the dark soliton. In the dilute limit a lowest Landau level calculation provides an analytic description of these vortex modes in terms of the harmonic oscillator states.

Bubble domains in disc-shaped ferromagnetic particles

We study the fundamental magnetic states of disc-shaped ferromagnetic particles with a uniaxial anisotropy along the symmetry axis. Besides the monodomain, a bidomain state is also identified and studied both numerically and theoretically. This bidomain state consists of two coaxial oppositely magnetized cylindrically symmetric domains and remains stable even at zero bias field, unlike magnetic bubbles in ferromagnetic films. For a given disc thickness we find the critical radius above which the magnetization configuration falls into the bidomain bubble state. The critical radius depends strongly on the film thickness especially for ultrathin films. The effect of an external field is also studied and the bidomain state is found to remain stable over a range of field strengths.

Vortex lattices in the lowest Landau level for confined Bose-Einstein condensates

We present the results of numerical calculations of the groundstates of weakly-interacting Bose-Einstein condensates containing large numbers of vortices. Our calculations show that these groundstates appear to be close to uniform triangular vortex lattices. However, slight deviations from a uniform triangular lattice have dramatic consequences on the overall particle distribution. In particular, we demonstrate that the overall particle distribution averaged on a lengthscale large compared to the vortex lattice constant is well approximated by a Thomas-Fermi profile.

Solitons, solitonic vortices, and vortex rings in a confined Bose-Einstein condensate

Quasi-one-dimensional solitons that may occur in an elongated Bose-Einstein condensate become unstable at high particle density. We study two basic modes of instability and the corresponding bifurcations to genuinely three-dimensional solitary waves such as axisymmetric vortex rings and non-axisymmetric solitonic vortices. We calculate the profiles of the above structures and examine their dependence on the velocity of propagation along a cylindrical trap. At sufficiently high velocity, both the vortex ring and the solitonic vortex transform into an axisymmetric soliton. We also calculate the energy-momentum dispersions and show that a Lieb-type mode appears in the excitation spectrum for all particle densities.

Modulated structures in electroconvection in nematic liquid crystals

Motivated by experiments in electroconvection in nematic liquid crystals with homeotropic alignment we study the coupled amplitude equations describing the formation of a stationary roll pattern in the presence of a weakly-damped mode that breaks isotropy. The equations can be generalized to describe the planarly aligned case if the orienting effect of the boundaries is small, which can be achieved by a destabilizing magnetic field. The slow mode represents the in-plane director at the center of the cell. The simplest uniform states are normal rolls which may undergo a pitchfork bifurcation to abnormal rolls with a misaligned in-plane director. We present a new class of defect-free solutions with spatial modulations perpendicular to the rolls. In a parameter range where the zig-zag instability is not relevant these solutions are stable attractors, as observed in experiments. We also present two-dimensionally modulated states with and without defects which result from the destabilization of the one-dimensionally modulated structures. Finally, for no (or very small) damping, and away from the rotationally symmetric case, we find static chevrons made up of a periodic arrangement of defect chains (or bands of defects) separating homogeneous regions of oblique rolls with very small amplitude. These states may provide a model for a class of poorly understood stationary structures observed in various highly-conducting materials ("prechevrons" or "broad domains").

Nonlinear waves in a cylindrical Bose-Einstein condensate

We present a complete calculation of solitary waves propagating in a steady state with constant velocity v along a cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein trap approximated as infinitely-long cylindrical. For sufficiently weak couplings (densities) the main features of the calculated solitons could be captured by effective one-dimensional (1D) models. However, for stronger couplings of practical interest, the relevant solitary waves are found to be hybrids of quasi-1D solitons and 3D vortex rings. An interesting hierarchy of vortex rings occurs as the effective coupling constant is increased through a sequence of critical values. The energy-momentum dispersion of the above structures is shown to exhibit characteristics similar to a mode proposed sometime ago by Lieb within a strictly 1D model, as well as some rotonlike features.

Vortex Rings and Lieb Modes in a Cylindrical Bose-Einstein Condensate

We present a calculation of a solitary wave propagating along a cylindrical Bose-Einstein trap, which is found to be a hybrid of a one-dimensional (1D) soliton and a three-dimensional (3D) vortex ring. The calculated energy-momentum dispersion exhibits characteristics similar to those of a mode proposed sometime ago by Lieb within a 1D model, as well as some rotonlike features.

Scattering of vortex pairs in 2D easy-plane ferromagnets

Vortex-antivortex pairs in 2D easy-plane ferromagnets have characteristics of solitons in two dimensions. We investigate numerically and analytically the dynamics of such vortex pairs. In particular we simulate numerically the head-on collision of two pairs with different velocities for a wide range of the total linear momentum of the system. If the momentum difference of the two pairs is small, the vortices exchange partners, scatter at an angle depending on this difference, and form two new identical pairs. If it is large, the pairs pass through each other without losing their identity. We also study head-tail collisions. Two identical pairs moving in the same direction are bound into a moving quadrupole in which the two vortices as well as the two antivortices rotate around each other. We study the scattering processes also analytically in the frame of a collective variable theory, where the equations of motion for a system of four vortices constitute an integrable system. The features of the different collision scenarios are fully reproduced by the theory. We finally compare some aspects of the present soliton scattering with the corresponding situation in one dimension.

Intermediate phase in the spiral antiferromagnet Ba_2CuGe_2O_7

The magnetic compound Ba_2CuGe_2O_7 has recently been shown to be an essentially two-dimensional spiral antiferromagnet that exhibits an incommensurate-to-commensurate phase transition when a magnetic field applied along the c-axis exceeds a certain critical value H_c. The T=0 dynamics is described here in terms of a continuum field theory in the form of a nonlinear sigma model. We are thus in a position to carry out a complete calculation of the low-energy magnon spectrum for any strength of the applied field throughout the phase transition. In particular, our spin-wave analysis reveals field-induced instabilities at two distinct critical fields H_1 and H_2 such that H_1 < H_c < H_2. Hence we predict the existence of an intermediate phase whose detailed nature is also studied to some extent in the present paper.

Scattering of magnetic solitons in two dimensions

Solitons which have the form of a vortex-antivortex pair have recently been found in the Landau-Lifshitz equation which is the standard model for the ferromagnet. We simulate numerically head-on collisions of two vortex-antivortex pairs and observe a right angle scattering pattern. We offer a resolution of this highly nontrivial dynamical behavior by examining the Hamiltonian structure of the model, specifically the linear momentum of the two solitons. We further investigate the dynamics of vortices in a modified nonlinear sigma-model which arises in the description of antiferromagnets. We confirm numerically that a robust feature of the dynamics is the right angle scattering of two vortices which collide head-on. A generalization of our theory is given for this model which offers arguments towards an understanding of the observed dynamical behavior.

Q Rings

We show the existence of new stable ring-like localized scalar field configurations whose stability is due to a combination of topological and nontopological charges. In that sense these defects may be called semitopological. These rings are Noether charged and also carry Noether current (they are superconducting). They are local minima of the energy in scalar field theories with an unbroken U(1) global symmetry. We obtain numerical solutions of the field configuration corresponding to large rings and derive virial theorems demonstrating their stability. We also derive the minimum energy field configurations in 3D and simulate the evolution of a finite size Q ring on a three dimensional lattice thus generalizing our demonstration of stability.
