Volume of Tubes and Concentration of Measure in Riemannian Geometry

We investigate the notion of concentration locus introduced in \cite{CacUrs22}, in the case of Riemann manifolds sequences and its relationship with the volume of tubes. After providing a general formula for the volume of a tube around a Riemannian submanifold of a Riemannian manifold, we specialize it to the case of totally geodesic submanifolds of compact symmetric spaces. In the case of codimension one, we prove explicitly concentration. Then, we investigate for possible characterizations of concentration loci in terms of Wasserstein and Box distances.

Concentration of measure for classical Lie groups

We study concentration of measure in Lie group actions. We define the notion of concentration locus of a flag sequence of Lie groups. Some examples of infinite group action on an infinite dimensional compact and non compact manifold show the role played by the trajectory of concentration locus. We also provide some applications in Physics, which emphasize the role of concentration of measure in gravitational effects.

Cooking pasta with Lie groups

We extend the (gauged) Skyrme model to the case in which the global isospin group (which usually is taken to be $SU(N)$) is a generic compact connected Lie group $G$. We analyze the corresponding field equations in (3+1) dimensions from a group theory point of view. Several solutions can be constructed analytically and are determined by the embeddings of three dimensional simple Lie groups into $G$, in a generic irreducible representation. These solutions represent the so-called nuclear pasta state configurations of nuclear matter at low energy. We employ the Dynkin explicit classification of all three dimensional Lie subgroups of exceptional Lie group to classify all such solutions in the case $G$ is an exceptional simple Lie group, and give all ingredients to construct them explicitly. As an example, we construct the explicit solutions for $G=G_{2}$. We then extend our ansatz to include the minimal coupling of the Skyrme field to a $U(1)$ gauge field. We extend the definition of the topological charge to this case and then concentrate our attention to the electromagnetic case. After imposing a "free force condition" on the gauge field, the complete set of coupled field equations corresponding to the gauged Skyrme model minimally coupled to an Abelian gauge field is reduced to just one linear ODE keeping alive the topological charge. We discuss the cases in which such ODE belongs to the (Whittaker-)Hill and Mathieu types.

Analogue Hawking Effect: a master equation

We consider further on the problem of the analogue Hawking radiation. We propose a fourth order ordinary differential equation, which allows to discuss the problem of Hawking radiation in analogue gravity in a unified way, encompassing fluids and dielectric media. In a suitable approximation, involving weak dispersive effects, WKB solutions are obtained far from the horizon (turning point), and furthermore an equation governing the behaviour near the horizon is derived, and a complete set of analytical solutions is obtained also near the horizon. The subluminal case of the original fluid model introduced by Corley and Jacobson, the case of dielectric media are discussed. We show that in this approximation scheme there is a mode which is not directly involved in the pair-creation process. Thermality is verified and a framework for calculating the grey-body factor is provided.

Analogue Hawking Effect: BEC and Surface Waves

We take into account two further physical models which play an utmost importance in the framework of Analogue Gravity. We first consider Bose--Einstein condensates (BEC) and then surface gravity waves in water. Our approach is based on the use of the master equation we introduced in a previous work. A more complete analysis of the singular perturbation problem involved, with particular reference to the behavior in the neighbourhood of the (real) turning point and its connection with the WKB approximation, allows us to verify the thermal character of the particle production process. Furthermore, we can provide a simple scheme apt to calculate explicitly the greybody factors in the case of BEC and surface waves. This corroborates the improved approach we proposed for studying the analogue Hawking effect in the usual limit of small dispersive effects.

Analogue Hawking radiation in an exactly solvable model of BEC

Hawking radiation, the spontaneous emission of thermal photons from an event horizon, is one of the most intriguing and elusive predictions of field theory in curved spacetimes. A formally analogue phenomenon occurs at the supersonic transition of a fluid: in this respect, ultracold gases stand out among the most promising systems but the theoretical modelling of this effect has always been carried out in semiclassical approximation, borrowing part of the analysis from the gravitational analogy. Here we discuss the exact solution of a one-dimensional Bose gas flowing against an obstacle, showing that spontaneous phonon emission (the analogue of Hawking radiation) is predicted without reference to the gravitational analogy. Long after the creation of the obstacle, the fluid settles into a stationary state displaying the emission of sound waves (phonons) in the upstream direction. A careful analysis shows that a precise correspondence between this phenomenon and the spontaneous emission of radiation from an event horizon requires additional conditions to be met in future experiments aimed at identifying the occurrence of the Hawking-like mechanism in Bose-Einstein condensates.

Tunneling method for Hawking radiation in the Nariai case

We revisit the tunneling picture for the Hawking effect in light of the charged Nariai manifold, because this general relativistic solution, which displays two horizons, provides the bonus to allow the knowledge of exact solutions of the field equations. We first perform a revisitation of the tunneling ansatz in the framework of particle creation in external fields a la Nikishov, which corroborates the interpretation of the semiclassical emission rate Gamma as the conditional probability rate for the creation of a couple of particles from the vacuum. Then, particle creation associated with the Hawking effect on the Nariai manifold is calculated in two ways. On the one hand, we apply the Hamilton Jacobi formalism for tunneling, in the case of a charged scalar field on the given background. On the other hand, the knowledge of the exact solutions for the Klein Gordon equations on Nariai manifold, and their analytic properties on the extended manifold, allow us a direct computation of the flux of particles leaving the horizon, and, as a consequence, we obtain a further corroboration of the semiclassical tunneling picture from the side of S-matrix formalism.

The Hopfield-Kerr model and analogue black hole radiation in dielectrics

In the context of the interaction between the electromagnetic field and a dielectric dispersive lossless medium, we present a non-linear version of the relativistically covariant Hopfield model, which is suitable for the description of a dielectric Kerr perturbation propagating in a dielectric medium. The non-linearity is introduced in the Lagrangian through a self-interacting term proportional to the fourth power of the polarization field. We find an exact solution for the nonlinear equations describing a propagating perturbation in the dielectric medium. Furthermore the presence of an analogue Hawking effect, as well as the thermal properties of the model, are discussed, confirming and improving the results achieved in the scalar case.

Spectral boundary conditions and solitonic solutions in a classical Sellmeier dielectric

Electromagnetic field interactions in a dielectric medium represent a longstanding field of investigation, both at the classical level and at the quantum one. We propose a 1+1 dimensional toy-model which consists of an half-line filling dielectric medium, with the aim to set up a simplified situation where technicalities related to gauge invariance and, as a consequence, physics of constrained systems are avoided, and still interesting features appear. In particular, we simulate the electromagnetic field and the polarization field by means of two coupled scalar fields $ϕ$,$ψ$ respectively, in a Hopfield-like model. We find that, in order to obtain a physically meaningful behaviour for the model, one has to introduce spectral boundary conditions depending on the particle spectrum one is dealing with. This is the first interesting achievement of our analysis. The second relevant achievement is that, by introducing a nonlinear contribution in the polarization field $ψ$, with the aim of mimicking a third order nonlinearity in a nonlinear dielectric, we obtain solitonic solutions in the Hopfield model framework, whose classical behaviour is analyzed too.

Numerical study of a recent black hole lasing experiment

We theoretically analyse a recent experiment reporting the observation of a self-amplifying Hawking radiation in a flowing atomic condensate [J.Steinhauer, Nature Physics, vol.10, pp.864, Nov 2014]. We are able to accurately reproduce the experimental observations using a theoretical model based on the numerical solution of a mean-field Gross-Pitaevskii equation that does not include quantum fluctuations of the matter field. In addition to confirming the black hole lasing mechanism, our results show that the underlying dynamical instability has a classical hydrodynamic origin and is triggered by a seed of deterministic nature, linked to the non-stationary of the process, rather than by thermal or zero-point fluctuations.

Stimulated emission and Hawking radiation in black hole analogues

Stimulated emission by black holes is discussed in light of the analogue gravity program. We first consider initial quantum states containing a definite number of particles, and then we take into account the case where the initial state is a coherent state. The latter case is particularly significant in the case where Hawking radiation is studied in dielectric black holes, and the emission is stimulated by a laser probe. We are particularly interested in the case of the electromagnetic field, for which stimulated radiation is calculated too.

Hurewicz fibrations, almost submetries and critical points of smooth maps

We prove that the existence of a Hurewicz fibration between certain spaces with the homotopy type of a CW-complex implies some topological restrictions on their universal coverings. This result is used to deduce differentiable and metric properties of maps between compact Riemannian manifolds under curvature restrictions.

The Hopfield model revisited: Covariance and Quantization

There are several possible applications of quantum electrodynamics in dielectric media which require a quantum description for the electromagnetic field interacting with matter fields. The associated quantum models can refer to macroscopic electromagnetic fields or, in alternative, to mesoscopic fields (polarization fields) describing an effective interaction between electromagnetic field and matter fields. We adopt the latter approach, and focus on the Hopfield model for the electromagnetic field in a dielectric dispersive medium in a framework in which space-time dependent mesoscopic parameters occur, like susceptibility, matter resonance frequency, and also coupling between electromagnetic field and polarization field. Our most direct goal is to describe in a phenomenological way a space-time varying dielectric perturbation induced by means of the Kerr effect in nonlinear dielectric media. This extension of the model is implemented by means of a Lorentz-invariant Lagrangian which, for constant microscopic parameters, and in the rest frame, coincides with the standard one. Moreover, we deduce a covariant scalar product and provide a covariant quantization scheme which keeps into account the constraints implicit in the model. Examples of viable applications are indicated.

The Hawking effect in dielectric media and the Hopfield model

We consider the so-called Hopfield model for the electromagnetic field in a dielectric dispersive medium in a framework in which one allows a space-time dependence of microscopic parameters, aimed to a phenomenological description of a space-time varying dielectric perturbation induced by means of the Kerr effect. We discuss the analogue Hawking effect, by first analyzing the geometrical optics for the Hopfield model, and then by introducing a simplified model which has the bonus to avoid many difficulties which are involved in the full Hopfield model, still keeping the same dispersion relation. Amplitude calculations are indicated, and generalized Manley-Rowe identities are derived in a quantum scattering theory framework. Our main result is an analytical calculation of the spontaneous thermal emission in the single-branch case, which is provided non perturbatively for the first time in the framework of dielectric black holes. An universal mechanism for thermality between optical black holes and acoustic black holes is also pointed out.

Path integral quantization of the relativistic Hopfield model

The path integral quantization method is applied to a relativistically covariant version of the Hopfield model, which represents a very interesting mesoscopic framework for the description of the interaction between quantum light and dielectric quantum matter, with particular reference to the context of analogue gravity. In order to take into account the constraints occurring in the model, we adopt the Faddeev-Jackiw approach to constrained quantization in the path integral formalism. In particular we demonstrate that the propagator obtained with the Faddeev-Jackiw approach is equivalent to the one which, in the framework of Dirac canonical quantization for constrained systems, can be directly computed as the vacuum expectation value of the time ordered product of the fields. Our analysis also provides an explicit example of quantization of the electromagnetic field in a covariant gauge and coupled with the polarization field, which is a novel contribution to the literature on the Faddeev-Jackiw procedure.

Phi-Psi model for Electrodynamics in dielectric media: exact quantisation in the Heisenberg representation

We investigate the quantization in the Heisenberg representation of a model which represents a simplification of the Hopfield model for dielectric media, where the electromagnetic field is replaced by a scalar field $ϕ$ and the role of the polarization field is played by a further scalar field $ψ$. The model, which is quadratic in the fields, is still characterized by a nontrivial physical content, as the physical particles correspond to the polaritons of the standard Hopfield model of condensed matter physics. Causality is also taken into account and a discussion of the standard interaction representation is also considered.

Exact quantisation of the relativistic Hopfield model

We investigate the quantisation in the Heisenberg representation of a relativistically covariant version of the Hopfield model for dielectric media, which entails the interaction of the quantum electromagnetic field with the matter dipole fields. The matter fields are represented by a mesoscopic polarization field. A full quantisation of the model is provided in a covariant gauge, with the aim of maintaining explicit relativistic covariance. Breaking of the Lorentz invariance due to the intrinsic presence in the model of a preferred reference frame is also taken into account. Relativistic covariance forces us to deal with the unphysical (scalar and longitudinal) components of the fields, furthermore it introduces, in a more tricky form, the well-known dipole ghost of standard QED in a covariant gauge. In order to correctly dispose of this contribution, we implement a generalized Lautrup trick. Furthermore, causality and the relation of the model with the Wightman axioms are also discussed.

Compact Lie groups: Euler constructions and generalized Dyson conjecture

A generalized Euler parameterization of a compact Lie group is a way for parameterizing the group starting from a maximal Lie subgroup, which allows a simple characterization of the range of parameters. In the present paper we consider the class of all compact connected Lie groups. We present a general method for realizing their generalized Euler parameterization starting from any symmetrically embedded Lie group. Our construction is based on a detailed analysis of the geometry of these groups. As a byproduct this gives rise to an interesting connection with certain Dyson integrals. In particular, we obtain a geometry based proof of a Macdonald conjecture regarding the Dyson integrals correspondent to the root systems associated to all irreducible symmetric spaces. As an application of our general method we explicitly parameterize all groups of the class of simple, simply connected compact Lie groups. We provide a table giving all necessary ingredients for all such Euler parameterizations.
