Tunneling approach and thermality in dispersive models of analogue gravity

We set up a tunneling approach to the analogue Hawking effect in the case of models of analogue gravity which are affected by dispersive effects. An effective Schroedinger-like equation for the basic scattering phenomenon IN->P+N*, where IN is the incident mode, P is the positive norm reflected mode, and N* is the negative norm one, signalling particle creation, is derived, aimed to an approximate description of the phenomenon. Horizons and barrier penetration play manifestly a key-role in giving rise to pair-creation. The non-dispersive limit is also correctly recovered. Drawbacks of the model are also pointed out and a possible solution ad hoc is suggested.

Blackbody emission from light interacting with an effective moving dispersive medium

Intense laser pulses excite a nonlinear polarisation response that may create an effective flowing medium and, under appropriate conditions, a blocking horizon for light. Here we analyse in detail the interaction of light with such laser-induced flowing media, fully accounting for the medium dispersion properties. An analytical model based on a first Born-approximation is found to be in excellent agreement with numerical simulations based on Maxwell's equations and shows that when a blocking horizon is formed, the stimulated medium scatters light with a blackbody emission spectrum. Based on these results, diamond is proposed as a promising candidate medium for future studies of Hawking emission from artificial, dispersive horizons.

Soliton-induced relativistic-scattering and amplification

Solitons are of fundamental importance in photonics due to applications in optical data transmission and also as a tool for investigating novel phenomena ranging from light generation at new frequencies and wave-trapping to rogue waves. Solitons are also relativistic scatterers: they generate refractive-index perturbations moving at the speed of light. Here we found that such perturbations scatter light in an unusual way: they amplify light by the mixing of positive and negative frequencies, as we describe using a first Born approximation and numerical simulations. The simplest scenario in which these effects may be observed is within the initial stages of optical soliton propagation: a steep shock front develops that may efficiently scatter a second, weaker probe pulse into relatively intense positive and negative frequency modes with amplification at the expense of the soliton. Our results show a novel all-optical amplification scheme that relies on relativistic scattering.

A simple E8 construction

In this short letter we conclude our program, started in [J. Math. Phys. 46 (2005) 083512], of building up explicit generalized Euler angle parameterizations for all exceptional compact Lie groups. In this last step we solve the problem for E8.

Dielectric black holes induced by a refractive index perturbation and the Hawking effect

We consider a 4D model for photon production induced by a %superluminal refractive index perturbation in a dielectric medium. We show that, in this model, we can infer the presence of a Hawking type effect. This prediction shows up both in the analogue Hawking framework, which is implemented in the pulse frame and relies on the peculiar properties of the effective geometry in which quantum fields propagate, as well as in the laboratory frame, through standard quantum field theory calculations. Effects of optical dispersion are also taken into account, and are shown to provide a limited energy bandwidth for the emission of Hawking radiation.

Spacetime geometries and light trapping in travelling refractive index perturbations

In the framework of transformation optics, we show that the propagation of a locally superluminal refractive index perturbation (RIP) in a Kerr medium can be described, in the eikonal approximation, by means of a stationary metric, which we prove to be of Gordon type. Under suitable hypotheses on the RIP, we obtain a stationary but not static metric, which is characterized by an ergosphere and by a peculiar behaviour of the geodesics, which are studied numerically, also accounting for material dispersion. Finally, the equation to be satisfied by an event horizon is also displayed and briefly discussed.

Hawking radiation from ultrashort laser pulse filaments

Event horizons of astrophysical black holes and gravitational analogues have been predicted to excite the quantum vacuum and give rise to the emission of quanta, known as Hawking radiation. We experimentally create such a gravitational analogue using ultrashort laser pulse filaments and our measurements demonstrate a spontaneous emission of photons that confirms theoretical predictions.

Quantum radiation from superluminal refractive index perturbations

We analyze in detail photon production induced by a superluminal refractive index perturbation in realistic experimental operating conditions. The interaction between the refractive index perturbation and the quantum vacuum fluctuations of the electromagnetic field leads to the production of photon pairs.

Quantum instability for charged scalar particles on charged Nariai and ultracold black hole manifolds

We analyze in detail the quantum instability which characterizes charged scalar field on three special de Sitter charged black hole backgrounds. In particular, we compute exactly the imaginary part of the effective action for scalar charged fields on the ultracold I, ultracold II and Nariai charged black hole backgrounds. Both the transmission coefficient approach and the $ζ$-function approach are exploited. Thermal effects on this quantum instability are also taken into account in presence of a non-zero black hole temperature (ultracold I and Nariai).

Massive Dirac particles on the background of charged de-Sitter black hole manifolds

We consider the behavior of massive Dirac fields on the background of a charged de-Sitter black hole. All black hole geometries are taken into account, including the Reissner-Nordström-de-Sitter one, the Nariai case and the ultracold case. Our focus is at first on the existence of bound quantum mechanical states for the Dirac Hamiltonian on the given backgrounds. In this respect, we show that in all cases no bound state is allowed, which amounts also to the non-existence of normalizable time-periodic solutions of the Dirac equation. This quantum result is in contrast to classical physics, and it is shown to hold true even for extremal cases. Furthermore, we shift our attention on the very interesting problem of the quantum discharge of the black holes. Following Damour-Deruelle-Ruffini approach, we show that the existence of level-crossing between positive and negative continuous energy states is a signal of the quantum instability leading to the discharge of the black hole, and in the cases of the Nariai geometry and of the ultracold geometries we also calculate in WKB approximation the transmission coefficient related to the discharge process.

Pair-production of charged Dirac particles on charged Nariai and ultracold black hole manifolds

Spontaneous loss of charge by charged black holes by means of pair-creation of charged Dirac particles is considered. We provide three examples of exact calculations for the spontaneous discharge process for 4D charged black holes by considering the process on three special non-rotating de Sitter black hole backgrounds, which allow to bring back the problem to a Kaluza-Klein reduction. Both the zeta-function approach and the transmission coefficient approach are taken into account. A comparison between the two methods is also provided, as well as a comparison with WKB results. In the case of non-zero temperature of the geometric background, we also discuss thermal effects on the discharge process.

Discrete Matter, Far Fields, and Dark Matter

We show that in cosmology the gravitational action of the far away matter has quite relevant effects, if retardation of the forces and discreteness of matter (with its spatial correlation) are taken into account. The expansion rate is found to be determined by the density of the far away matter, i.e., by the density of matter at remote times. This leads to the introduction of an effective density, which has to be five times larger than the present one, if the present expansion rate is to be accounted for. The force per unit mass on a test particle is found to be of the order of 0.2cH_0. The corresponding contribution to the virial of the forces for a cluster of galaxies is also discussed, and it is shown that it fits the observations if a decorrelation property of the forces at two separated points is assumed. So it appears that the gravitational effects of the far away matter may have the same order of magnitude as the corresponding local effects of dark matter.

On the role of the far fields and of cosmology for the theory of gravitation and for the dark matter problem

We give an estimate of the gravitational field of force exerted on a test particle by the far galaxies, in the frame of the weak field approximation. In virtue of Hubble's law, the action of the far matter turns out to be non negligible, and even the dominant one. An extremely simplified cosmological model is considered. A nonvanishing contribution is obtained only if the discrete and fractal nature of the matter distribution is taken into account. The force per unit mass acting on a test particle is found to be of the order of $0.2 cH_0$, where $c$ is the speed of light and $H_0$ the present value of Hubble's constant.

Geometry of four-dimensional Killing spinors

The supersymmetric solutions of N=2, D=4 minimal ungauged and gauged supergravity are classified according to the fraction of preserved supersymmetry using spinorial geometry techniques. Subject to a reasonable assumption in the 1/2-supersymmetric time-like case of the gauged theory, we derive the complete form of all supersymmetric solutions. This includes a number of new 1/4- and 1/2-supersymmetric possibilities, like gravitational waves on bubbles of nothing in AdS_4.

On the Euler angles for SU(N)

In this paper we reconsider the problem of the Euler parametrization for the unitary groups. After constructing the generic group element in terms of generalized angles, we compute the invariant measure on SU(N) and then we determine the full range of the parameters, using both topological and geometrical methods. In particular, we show that the given parametrization realizes the group $SU(N+1)$ as a fibration of U(N) over the complex projective space $\mathbb{CP}^n$. This justifies the interpretation of the parameters as generalized Euler angles.

Plane waves from double extended spacetimes

We study exact string backgrounds (WZW models) generated by nonsemisimple algebras which are obtained as double extensions of generic D--dimensional semisimple algebras. We prove that a suitable change of coordinates always exists which reduces these backgrounds to be the product of the nontrivial background associated to the original algebra and two dimensional Minkowski. However, under suitable contraction, the algebra reduces to a Nappi--Witten algebra and the corresponding spacetime geometry, no more factorized, can be interpreted as the Penrose limit of the original background. For both configurations we construct D--brane solutions and prove that {\em all} the branes survive the Penrose limit. Therefore, the limit procedure can be used to extract informations about Nappi--Witten plane wave backgrounds in arbitrary dimensions.
