Dynamics of the Compact, Ferromagnetic ν=1 Edge

We consider the edge dynamics of a compact, fully spin polarized state at filling factor $ν=1$. We show that there are two sets of collective excitations localized near the edge: the much studied, gapless, edge magnetoplasmon but also an additional edge spin wave that splits off below the bulk spin wave continuum. We show that both of these excitations can soften at finite wave-vectors as the potential confining the system is softened, thereby leading to edge reconstruction by spin texture or charge density wave formation. We note that a commonly employed model of the edge confining potential is non-generic in that it systematically underestimates the texturing instability.

The transverse magnetoresistance of the two-dimensional chiral metal

We consider the two-dimensional chiral metal, which exists at the surface of a layered, three-dimensional sample exhibiting the integer quantum Hall effect. We calculate its magnetoresistance in response to a component of magnetic field perpendicular to the sample surface, in the low temperature, but macroscopic, regime where inelastic scattering may be neglected. The magnetoresistance is positive, following a Drude form with a field scale, $B_0=Φ_0/al_{\text{el}}$, given by the transverse field strength at which one quantum of flux, $Φ_0$, passes through a rectangle with sides set by the layer-spacing, $a$, and the elastic mean free path, $l_{\text{el}}$. Experimental measurement of this magnetoresistance may therefore provide a direct determination of the elastic mean free path in the chiral metal.

Effective Action Studies of Quantum Hall Spin Textures

We report on analytic and numerical studies of spin textures in quantum Hall systems using a long-wavelength effective action for the magnetic degrees of freedom derived previously. The majority of our results concern skyrmions or solitons of this action. We have constructed approximate analytic solutions for skyrmions of arbitrary topological and electric charge and derived expressions for their energies and charge and spin radii. We describe a combined shooting/relaxational technique for numerical determination of the skyrmion profiles and present results that compare favorably with the analytic treatment as well as with Hartree-Fock studies of these objects. In addition, we describe a treatment of textures at the edges of quantum Hall systems within this approach and provide details not reported previously.

Coulomb and Hard Core Skyrmion Tails

Quantum Hall skyrmions are quantized solitons of a ferromagnetic O(3) sigma-model. The reference, classical, solutions depend upon the interaction between the electrons and exhibit completely different asymptotic profiles for the physical Coulomb interaction than for the model hard core interaction frequently used to generate variational wavefunctions. In this note we show, by means of numerical calculations on (large) finite size systems at nu=1, that this physically important difference, crucial for a sharp definition of their statistics, persists for the quantized skyrmions at n=1.

Response of a $d_{x^2-y^2}$ Superconductor to a Zeeman Magnetic Field

We study the response of a two dimensional $d_{x^2-y^2}$ superconductor to a magnetic field that couples only to the spins of the electrons. In contrast to the s-wave case, the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ state is modified even at small magnetic fields, with the gap nodes widening into normal, spin polarized, pockets. We discuss the promising prospects for observing this in the cuprate superconductors in fields parallel to the Cu-O planes. We also discuss the phase diagram, inclusive of a finite momentum pairing state with a novel linkage between the momentum of the pairs and the nodes of the relative wave function.

A New Transport Regime in the Quantum Hall Effect

This paper describes an experimental identification and characterization of a new low temperature transport regime near the quantum Hall-to-insulator transition. In this regime, a wide range of transport data are compactly described by a simple phenomenological form which, on the one hand, is inconsistent with either quantum Hall or insulating behavior and, on the other hand, is also clearly at odds with a quantum-critical, or scaling, description. We are unable to determine whether this new regime represents a clearly defined state or is a consequence of finite temperature and sample-size measurements.

Quantum Hall Skyrmions with Higher Topological Charge

We have investigated quantum Hall skyrmions at filling factor ν=1 carrying more than one unit of topological, and hence electric, charge. Using a combination of analytic and numerical methods we find the counterintuitive result that when the Zeeman energy is tuned to values much smaller than the interaction energy (g μ_B B/(e^2/ε\ell) < 9*10^{-5}),the creation energy of a charge two skyrmion becomes less than twice the creation energy of a charge one skyrmion, i.e. skyrmions bind in pairs. The doubly charged skyrmions are stable to further accretion of charge and exhibit a 10% larger spin per unit charge than charge one skyrmions which would, in principle, signal this pairing.

Hartree-Fock Theory of Skyrmions in Quantum Hall Ferromagnets

We report on a study of the charged-skyrmion or spin-texture excitations which occur in quantum Hall ferromagnets near odd Landau level filling factors. Particle-hole symmetry is used to relate the spin-quantum numbers of charged particle and hole excitations and neutral particle-hole pair excitations. Hartree-Fock theory is used to provide quantitative estimates of the energies of these excitations and their dependence on Zeeman coupling strength, Landau level quantum numbers, and the thicknesses of the two-dimensional electron layers. For the case of $ν$ near three we suggest the possibility of first order phase transitions with increasing Zeeman coupling strength from a many skyrmion state to one with many maximally spin-polarized quasiparticles.

A different view of the quantum Hall plateau-to-plateau transitions

We demonstrate experimentally that the transitions between adjacent integer quantum Hall (QH) states are equivalent to a QH-to-insulator transition occurring in the top Landau level, in the presence of an inert background of the other completely filled Landau levels, each contributing a single unit of quantum conductance, $e^{2}/h$, to the total Hall conductance of the system.

Duality Near Quantum Hall Transitions

A recent experiment by Shahar et al, on the phase transitions between quantum Hall states and the insulator, found that the current-voltage characteristics in the two phases are related by symmetry. It was suggested in this work that this is evidence for charge-flux duality near quantum Hall transitions. Here we provide details of this analysis. (Appearances notwithstanding, this is a theoretical paper.)

Continuous Quantum Phase Transitions

A quantum system can undergo a continuous phase transition at the absolute zero of temperature as some parameter entering its Hamiltonian is varied. These transitions are particularly interesting for, in contrast to their classical finite temperature counterparts, their dynamic and static critical behaviors are intimately intertwined. We show that considerable insight is gained by considering the path integral description of the quantum statistical mechanics of such systems, which takes the form of the {\em classical} statistical mechanics of a system in which time appears as an extra dimension. In particular, this allows the deduction of scaling forms for the finite temperature behavior, which turns out to be described by the theory of finite size scaling. It also leads naturally to the notion of a temperature-dependent dephasing length that governs the crossover between quantum and classical fluctuations. We illustrate these ideas using Josephson junction arrays and with a set of recent experiments on phase transitions in systems exhibiting the quantum Hall effect.

Textured Edges in Quantum Hall Systems

We have investigated the formation of spin textures at the edges of quantum Hall systems for several ferromagnetic filling factors. The textures are driven by the same physics that leads to ``skyrmions'' in the bulk. For hard confinement and large Zeeman energies, the edges are narrow and spin polarized. Away from this limit and for $ν=1/3$, $1/5$ and $1$, we find that they widen by developing spin textures. In contrast, for $ν=3$, the edge remains spin polarized, even as it reconstructs. We comment on the mode structure of the reconstructed edges and on possible experimental signatures.

Two point-contact interferometer for quantum Hall systems

We propose a device, consisting of a Hall bar with two weak barriers, that can be used to study quantum interference effects in a strongly correlated system. We show how the device provides a way of measuring the fractional charge and fractional statistics of quasiparticles in the quantum Hall effect through an anomalous Aharanov-Bohm period. We discuss how this disentangling of the charge and statistics can be accomplished by measurements at fixed filling factor and at fixed density. We also discuss a another type of interference effect that occurs in the nonlinear regime as the source-drain voltage is varied. The period of these oscillations can also be used to measure the fractional charge, and details of the oscillations patterns, in particular the position of the nodes, can be used to distinguish between Fermi-liquid and Luttinger-liquid behavior. We illustrate these ideas by computing the conductance of the device in the framework of edge state theory and use it to estimate parameters for the experimental realization of this device.

The Nature of the Hall Insulator

We have conducted an experimental study of the linear transport properties of the magnetic-field induced insulating phase which terminates the quantum Hall (QH) series in two dimensional electron systems. We found that a direct and simple relation exists between measurements of the longitudinal resistivity, $ρ_{xx}$, in this insulating phase and in the neighboring QH phase. In addition, we find that the Hall resistivity, $ρ_{xy}$, can be quantized in the insulating phase. Our results indicate that a close relation exists between the conduction mechanism in the insulator and in the QH liquid.

Many skyrmion wave functions and skyrmion statistics in quantum Hall ferromagnets

We determine the charge and statistical angle of skyrmions in quantum Hall ferromagnets by performing Berry phase calculations based on the microscopic variational wave functions for many-skyrmion states. We find, in contradiction to a recent claim by Dziarmaga, that both the charge and the statistical angle of a skyrmion are independent of its spin (size), and are identical to those of Laughlin quasiparticles at the same filling factor. We discuss some subtleties in the use of these variational wave functions.

A Field Theory for the Read Operator

We introduce a new field theory for studying quantum Hall systems. The quantum field is a modified version of the bosonic operator introduced by Read. In contrast to Read's original work we do {\em not} work in the lowest Landau level alone, and this leads to a much simpler formalism. We identify an appropriate canonical conjugate field, and write a Hamiltonian that governs the exact dynamics of our bosonic field operators. We describe a Lagrangian formalism, derive the equations of motion for the fields and present a family of mean-field solutions. Finally, we show that these mean field solutions are precisely the Laughlin states. We do not, in this work, address the treatment of fluctuations.

Evidence for charge-flux duality near the quantum Hall liquid to insulator transition

We examine the longitudinal, non-linear, current-voltage characteristics near the quantum Hall liquid to insulator transition and show that a simple mapping exists between the characteristics on the quantum Hall side and those on the insulating side of the transition. More precisely, at filling factors related by the law of corresponding states the current and voltage simply trade places. We interpret these observations as evidence for the existence, in the composite boson description, of charge-flux duality near disorder dominated transitions in quantum Hall systems. (Appearances notwithstanding, this is an experimental paper.)

Skyrmions in Higher Landau Levels

We calculate the energies of quasiparticles with large numbers of reversed spins (``skyrmions'') for odd integer filling factors 2k+1, k is greater than or equals 1. We find, in contrast with the known result for filling factor equals 1 (k = 0), that these quasiparticles always have higher energy than the fully polarized ones and hence are not the low energy charged excitations, even at small Zeeman energies. It follows that skyrmions are the relevant quasiparticles only at filling factors 1, 1/3 and 1/5.
