Fractional Spin for Quantum Hall Effect Quasiparticles

We investigate the issue of whether quasiparticles in the fractional quantum Hall effect possess a fractional intrinsic spin. The presence of such a spin $S$ is suggested by the spin-statistics relation $S=θ/2π$, with $θ$ being the statistical angle, and, on a sphere, is required for consistent quantization of one or more quasiparticles. By performing Berry-phase calculations for quasiparticles on a sphere we find that there are two terms, of different origin, that couple to the curvature and can be interpreted as parts of the quasiparticle spin. One, due to self-interaction, has the same value for both the quasihole and quasielectron, and fulfills the spin-statistics relation. The other is a kinematical effect and has opposite signs for the quasihole and quasielectron. The total spin thus agrees with a generalized spin-statistics theorem $(S_{qh} + S_{qe})/2 = θ/2π$. On the plane, we do not find any corresponding terms.

Off-diagonal Interactions, Hund's Rules and Pair-binding in Hubbard Molecules

We have studied the effect of including nearest-neighbor, electron-electron interactions, in particular the off-diagonal (non density-density) terms, on the spectra of truncated tetrahedral and icosahedral ``Hubbard molecules,'' focusing on the relevance of these systems to the physics of doped C$_{60}$. Our perturbation theoretic and exact diagonalization results agree with previous work in that the density-density term suppresses pair-binding. However, we find that for the parameter values of interest for $C_{60}$ the off-diagonal terms {\em enhance} pair-binding, though not enough to offset the suppression due to the density-density term. We also find that the critical interaction strengths for the Hund's rules violating level crossings in C$_{60}^{-2}$, C$_{60}^{-3}$ and C$_{60}^{-4}$ are quite insensitive to the inclusion of these additional interactions.

Landau Level Mixing and Solenoidal Terms in Lowest Landau Level Currents

We calculate the lowest Landau level (LLL) current by working in the full Hilbert space of a two dimensional electron system in a magnetic field and keeping all the non-vanishing terms in the high field limit. The answer a) is not represented by a simple LLL operator and b) differs from the current operator, recently derived by Martinez and Stone in a field theoretic LLL formalism, by solenoidal terms. Though that is consistent with the inevitable ambiguities of their Noether construction, we argue that the correct answer cannot arise naturally in the LLL formalism.

Off-Diagonal Long Range Order and Scaling in a Disordered Quantum Hall System

We have numerically studied the bosonic off-diagonal long range order, introduced by Read to describe the ordering in ideal quantum Hall states, for noninteracting electrons in random potentials confined to the lowest Landau level. We find that it also describes the ordering in disordered quantum Hall states: the proposed order parameter vanishes in the disordered ($σ_{xy}=0$) phase and increases continuously from zero in the ordered ($σ_{xy}=e^2/h$) phase. We study the scaling of the order parameter and find that it is consistent with that of the one-electron Green's function.

The Quantum Hall Effect in Drag: Inter-layer Friction in Strong Magnetic Fields

We study the Coulomb drag between two spatially separated electron systems in a strong magnetic field, one of which exhibits the quantum Hall effect. At a fixed temperature, the drag mimics the behavior of $σ_{xx}$ in the quantum Hall system, in that it is sharply peaked near the transitions between neighboring plateaux. We assess the impact of critical fluctuations near the transitions, and find that the low temperature behavior of the drag measures an exponent $η$ that characterizes anomalous low frequency dissipation; the latter is believed to be present following the work of Chalker.
