Fast Microwave-free State Preparation and Measurement of Superconducting Qubits

Fast, high-fidelity, scalable state preparation and measurement is critical to the realization of a quantum computing system. The state-of-the-art methods for preparation and readout of superconducting qubits require finely tuned microwave signals and ~100 ns of measurement time, which are major obstacles to the scalability and performance of superconducting quantum computers. Here, we have demonstrated novel, microwave-free methods for both preparation and readout of superconducting qubits with >99% fidelity in only 10 ns for either operation while maintaining qubit coherence. This technology is compatible with scalable superconducting digital control systems, and using quantum flux parametrons for amplification, we demonstrated full quantum-to-digital conversion in only 15 ns, which is an order of magnitude faster than state-of-the-art microwave-based techniques.

Decoherence of a tunable capacitively shunted flux qubit

Quantum annealing is a method to solve optimization problems that leverages quantum tunneling in a coupled qubit system. We present a detailed study of the coherence of a tunable capacitively-shunted flux qubit, designed for coherent quantum annealing applications. We find that for high qubit frequencies, thermal noise in the bias line makes a significant contribution to the relaxation, arising from the design choice to experimentally explore both fast annealing and high-frequency control. The measured dephasing rate is primarily due to intrinsic low-frequency flux noise in the two qubit loops, with additional contribution from the low-frequency noise of control electronics used for fast annealing. Our results characterize decoherence in a realistic setup for quantum annealing and are relevant for ongoing efforts toward building superconducting quantum annealers with increased coherence.

Dissipative Landau-Zener tunneling in the crossover regime from weak to strong environment coupling

Landau-Zener tunneling, which describes the transition in a two-level system during a sweep through an anti-crossing, is a model applicable to a wide range of physical phenomena. Realistic quantum systems are affected by dissipation due to coupling to their environments. An important aspect of understanding such open quantum systems is the relative energy scales of the system itself and the system-environment coupling, which distinguishes the weak- and strong-coupling regimes. Using a tunable superconducting flux qubit, we observe the crossover from weak to strong coupling to the environment in Landau-Zener tunneling. Our results confirm previous theoretical studies of dissipative Landau-Zener tunneling in the weak and strong coupling limits. We devise a spin bath model that effectively captures the crossover regime. This work is relevant for understanding the role of dissipation in quantum annealing, where the system is expected to go through a cascade of Landau-Zener transitions before reaching the target state.

Optimizing for periodicity: a model-independent approach to flux crosstalk calibration for superconducting circuits

Flux tunability is an important engineering resource for superconducting circuits. Large-scale quantum computers based on flux-tunable superconducting circuits face the problem of flux crosstalk, which needs to be accurately calibrated to realize high-fidelity quantum operations. Typical calibration methods either assume that circuit elements can be effectively decoupled and simple models can be applied, or require a large amount of data. Such methods become ineffective as the system size increases and circuit interactions become stronger. Here we propose a new method for calibrating flux crosstalk, which is independent of the underlying circuit model. Using the fundamental property that superconducting circuits respond periodically to external fluxes, crosstalk calibration of N flux channels can be treated as N independent optimization problems, with the objective functions being the periodicity of a measured signal depending on the compensation parameters. We demonstrate this method on a small-scale quantum annealing circuit based on superconducting flux qubits, achieving comparable accuracy with previous methods. We also show that the objective function usually has a nearly convex landscape, allowing efficient optimization.

Calibration of flux crosstalk in large-scale flux-tunable superconducting quantum circuits

Magnetic flux tunability is an essential feature in most approaches to quantum computing based on superconducting qubits. Independent control of the fluxes in multiple loops is hampered by crosstalk. Calibrating flux crosstalk becomes a challenging task when the circuit elements interact strongly. We present a novel approach to flux crosstalk calibration, which is circuit model independent and relies on an iterative process to gradually improve calibration accuracy. This method allows us to reduce errors due to the inductive coupling between loops. The calibration procedure is automated and implemented on devices consisting of tunable flux qubits and couplers with up to 27 control loops. We devise a method to characterize the calibration error, which is used to show that the errors of the measured crosstalk coefficients are all below 0.17%.

Effect of carrier concentration on magnetism and magnetic order in the pyrochlore iridates

We present resistivity, magnetization, and zero field muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) data for the pyrochlore iridate materials Nd$_{2-x}$Ca$_{x}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ ($x = 0, 0.06$, and $0.10$) and Sm$_2$Ir$_2$O$_7$. While Nd$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ (Nd227) is weakly conducting, Sm$_{2}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ (Sm227) has slowly diverging resistivity at low temperature. Nd227 and Sm227 exhibit magnetic anomalies at $T_{M} = 105 K$ and $137 K$, respectively. However, zero-field $μ$SR measurements show that long-range magnetic order of the Ir$^{4+}$ sublattice sets in at much lower temperatures ($T_{LRO} \sim 8 K$ for Nd227 and $70 K$ for Sm227); both materials show heavily damped muon precession with a characteristic frequency near 9 MHz. The magnetic anomaly at $T_{M}$ in Nd227 is not significantly affected by the introduction of hole carriers by Ca-substitution in the conducting Nd$_{2-x}$Ca$_{x}$Ir$_{2}$O$_{7}$ samples, but the muon precession is fully suppressed for both.

Magnetization and Hall effect studies on the pyrochlore iridate Nd2Ir2O7

We present magnetization and Hall effect measurements on the pyrochlore iridate Nd2Ir2O7. Previous muon spin rotation measurements have shown that the system undergoes an unusual transition at T$_M$ = 110 K into a magnetic phase lacking long-range order, followed by a transition at T$_LRO$ = 6 K into a state with long-range magnetic order. We observe a small remnant magnetization when cycling through zero magnetic field at temperatures below T$_M$. Below T$_LRO$, this remnant magnetization increases sharply, and new hysteresis effects appear at a higher field B$_c$ = 2.5 T, while the Hall resistance develops a non-monotonic and hysteretic magnetic field dependence, with a maximum at B$_c$ and signatures of an anomalous Hall effect. The dependence on field sweep direction demonstrates a non-trivial transition into a magnetically ordered state with properties paralleling those of known spin-ice systems and suggests a spin reorientation transition across the metal insulator transition in the A-227 series.

Spin ordering and electronic texture in the bilayer iridate Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$

Through a neutron scattering, charge transport, and magnetization study, the correlated ground state in the bilayer iridium oxide Sr$_3$Ir$_2$O$_7$ is explored. Our combined results resolve scattering consistent with a high temperature magnetic phase that persists above 600 K, reorients at the previously defined $T_{AF}=280$ K, and coexists with an electronic ground state whose phase behavior suggests the formation of a fluctuating charge or orbital phase that freezes below $T^{*}\approx70$ K. Our study provides a window into the emergence of multiple electronic order parameters near the boundary of the metal to insulator phase transition of the 5d $J_{eff}=1/2$ Mott phase.

Magnetic Order in the Pyrochlore Iridates A2Ir2O7 (A = Y, Yb)

We present results from muon spin relaxation/rotation, magnetization, neutron scattering and transport measurements on polycrystalline samples of the pyrochlore iridates Y2Ir2O7 (Y-227) and Yb2Ir2O7 (Yb-227). Well-defined spontaneous oscillations of the muon asymmetry are observed together with hysteretic behavior in magnetization below 130 K in Yb-227, indicative of commensurate long-range magnetic order. Similar oscillations are observed in Y-227 below 150 K; however the onset of hysteretic magnetization at T = 190 K indicates a transition to an intermediate state lacking long-range order as observed in Nd-227. Our results also show that insulating members of the iridate family have nearly identical magnetic ground states, and that the presence of magnetic A-site species does not play any significant role in altering the ground state properties.

Magnetic order and the electronic ground state in the pyrochlore iridate Nd2Ir2O7

We report a combined muon spin relaxation/rotation, bulk magnetization, neutron scattering, and transport study of the electronic properties of the pyrochlore iridate Nd2Ir2O7. We observe the onset of strongly hysteretic behavior in the temperature dependent magnetization below 120 K, and an abrupt increase in the temperature dependent resistivity below 8 K. Zero field muon spin relaxation measurements show that the hysteretic magnetization is driven by a transition to a magnetically disordered state, and that below 8 K a complex magnetically ordered ground state sets in, as evidenced by the onset of heavily damped spontaneous muon precession. Our measurements point toward the absence of a true metal-to-insulator phase transition in this material and suggest that Nd2Ir2O7 lies either within or on the metallic side of the boundary of the Dirac semimetal regime within its topological phase diagram.

Competing Interactions and Magnetic Frustration in Yb4LiGe4

We have studied polycrystalline Yb4LiGe4, a ternary variant of the R5T4 family of layered compounds characterized by a very strong coupling between the magnetic and crystallographic degrees of freedom. The system is mixed valent, with non-magnetic Yb2+ and magnetic Yb3+ present, and is characterized by coexisting ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic correlations. We present measurements of resistivity, AC-susceptibility, specific heat, and muon spin relaxation (muSR), below 1 K. The low temperature measurements suggest a transition to a mesoscopically inhomogeneous magnetically ordered state below 2 K characterized by fluctuations well below the ordering temperature. This unusual state is believed to result from the enhanced two-dimensionality produced by Li substitution and frustration effects inherent in the Yb sub-lattice geometry.

Superconductivity of Bi Confined in an Opal Host

Superconductivity is observed in a composite of rhombohedral crystalline bismuth nanoparticles imbedded in an insulating porous opal host via electrical transport and AC magnetic susceptibility. The onset of superconductivity in this system occurs in two steps, with upper critical temperature Tc,U = 4.1 K and lower transition temperature of Tc,L = 0.7 K, which we attribute to the granular nature of the composite. The transition at Tc,U is observed to split into two transitions with the application of a magnetic field, and has upper critical field extrapolated to T = 0 K of Hc2,1(0) = 0.7 T and Hc2,2(0) = 1.0 T, corresponding to coherence lengths of xi1(0) = 21 nm and xi2(0) = 18 nm, respectively. We suggest that because of the lack of bulk-like states in the Bi nanoparticles due to confinement effects, superconductivity originates from surface states arising from Rashba spin-orbit scattering at the interface. This prospect suggests that nanostructured Bi may be an interesting system to search for Majorana fermions.
