Extraordinary Optical Transmission Induced by Excitation of a Magnetic Plasmon Propagation Mode in a Diatomic Chain of Slit-hole Resonators

In this paper, we will propose that magnetic-resonance nanostructures in a metal surface could be used to realize extraordinary optical transmission (EOT). Toward this goal, we designed and fabricated a one dimensional diatomic chain of slit-hole resonator (SHR). Due to the strong exchange current interaction, a type of magnetic plasmon (MP) propagation mode with a broad frequency bandwidth was established in this system. Apparent EOT peaks induced by the MP mode were observed in our measured spectra at infrared frequencies. The strongest EOT peak was obtained at 1.07 eV with an incident angle of 20 degree. The measured dependence of EOT peaks on the incident angle coincided with the theoretical results quite well. This proposed MP propagation mode in SHR structure has good potential applications in multifrequency nonlinear optical processes.

Combination of CDF and D0 Limits on a Gauge Mediated SUSY Model Using Diphoton and Missing Transverse Energy Channel

We combine the results of the CDF and D0 searches for chargino and neutralino production in Gauge-Mediated SUSY using the two-photon and missing Et channel. The data are p-pbar collisions produced at the Tevatron with sqrt(s)=1.96 TeV, with 202 pb^-1 collected at CDF and 263 pb^-1 collected at D0. The combined limit excludes a chargino mass less than 209 GeV/c^2. This result significantly extends the individual experimental limits.

Growth and properties of ferromagnetic In(1-x)Mn(x)Sb alloys

We discuss a new narrow-gap ferromagnetic (FM) semiconductor alloy, In(1-x)Mn(x)Sb, and its growth by low-temperature molecular-beam epitaxy. The magnetic properties were investigated by direct magnetization measurements, electrical transport, magnetic circular dichroism, and the magneto-optical Kerr effect. These data clearly indicate that In(1-x)Mn(x)Sb possesses all the attributes of a system with carrier-mediated FM interactions, including well-defined hysteresis loops, a cusp in the temperature dependence of the resistivity, strong negative magnetoresistance, and a large anomalous Hall effect. The Curie temperatures in samples investigated thus far range up to 8.5 K, which are consistent with a mean-field-theory simulation of the carrier-induced ferromagnetism based on the 8-band effective band-orbital method.

A 3-D Track-Finding Processor for the CMS Level-1 Muon Trigger

We report on the design and test results of a prototype processor for the CMS Level-1 trigger that performs 3-D track reconstruction and measurement from data recorded by the cathode strip chambers of the endcap muon system. The tracking algorithms are written in C++ using a class library we developed that facilitates automatic conversion to Verilog. The code is synthesized into firmware for field-programmable gate-arrays from the Xilinx Virtex-II series. A second-generation prototype has been developed and is currently under test. It performs regional track-finding in a 60 degree azimuthal sector and accepts 3 GB/s of input data synchronously with the 40 MHz beam crossing frequency. The latency of the track-finding algorithms is expected to be 250 ns, including geometrical alignment correction of incoming track segments and a final momentum assignment based on the muon trajectory in the non-uniform magnetic field in the CMS endcaps.

In(1-x)Mn(x)Sb - a new narrow gap ferromagnetic semiconductor

A narrow-gap ferromagnetic In(1-x)Mn(x)Sb semiconductor alloy was successfully grown by low-temperature molecular beam epitaxy on CdTe/GaAs hybrid substrates. Ferromagnetic order in In(1-x)Mn(x)Sb was unambiguously established by the observation of clear hysteresis loops both in direct magnetization measurements and in the anomalous Hall effect, with Curie temperatures T_C ranging up to 8.5 K. The observed values of T_C agree well with the existing models of carrier-induced ferromagnetism.
