Polariton-Enhanced Exciton Transport

The transport distance of excitons in exciton-polariton systems has previously been assumed to be very small ($\lesssim 1~μ$m). The sharp spatial profiles observed when generating polaritons by non-resonant optical excitation show that this assumption is generally true. In this paper, however, we show that the transport distances of excitons in two-dimensional planar cavity structures with even a slightly polaritonic character are much longer than expected ($\approx 20~μ$m). Although this population of slightly polaritonic excitons is normally small compared to the total population of excitons, they can substantially outnumber the population of the polaritons at lower energies, leading to important implications for the tailoring of potential landscapes and the measurement of interactions between polaritons.

Doping induced site-selective Mott insulating phase in LaFeO$_3$

Tailoring transport properties of strongly correlated electron systems in a controlled fashion counts among the dreams of materials scientists. In copper oxides, varying the carrier concentration is a tool to obtain high-temperature superconducting phases. In manganites, doping results in exotic physics such as insulator-metal transitions (IMT), colossal magnetoresistance (CMR), orbital- or charge-ordered (CO) or charge-disproportionate (CD) states. In most oxides, antiferromagnetic order and charge-disproportionation are asssociated with insulating behavior. Here we report the realization of a unique physical state that can be induced by Mo doping in LaFeO$_3$: the resulting metallic state is a site-selective Mott insulator where itinerant electrons evolving in low-energy Mo states coexist with localized carriers on the Fe sites. In addition, a local breathing-type lattice distortion induces charge disproportionation on the latter, without destroying the antiferromagnetic order. A state, combining antiferromangetism, metallicity and CD phenomena is rather rare in oxides and may be of utmost significance for future antiferromagnetic memory devices.

Electron sheath evolution controlled by a magnetic field in modified hollow cathode glow discharge

The electron sheath formation in a DC magnetised plasma of modified hollow cathode source is studied. The discharge consists of two plane parallel cathodes and a small cubical anode placed off axis at the center. The argon plasma is produced and the properties of the plasma in response to the sheath formation near the anode are studied using electrical and optical diagnostics. In particular, the effect of pressure, magnetic field on discharge parameters such as discharge current, plasma potential, plasma density and electron temperature is studied. The discharge showed an onset of anode glow at a critical applied magnetic field indicating the formation of electron sheath and a double layer. The discharge current initially decreases; however it starts to rise again as the anode spot appears on the anode. The critical magnetic field at which anode glow formation takes place is dependent upon operating pressure and discharge voltage. The transition from ion sheath to electron sheath is investigated in detail by Langmuir probe and spectroscopy diagnostics. The plasma potential near the anode decreases during the transition from ion sheath to electron sheath. The plasma potential locks to the ionization potential of argon gas when anode spot is completely formed. A systematic study showed that during the transition, the electron temperature increases and plasma density decreases in the bulk plasma. The spectroscopy of the discharge showed presence of strong atomic and ionic lines of argon. The intensity of these spectral lines showed a dip during the transition between two sheaths. After the formation of the anode spot, oscillations of the order of 5-20 kHz are observed in the discharge current and floating potential due to the enhanced ionisation and excitation processes in the electron sheath.

Observation of $^{6}$He+$t$ cluster states in $^{9}$Li

$^{6}$He+$t$ cluster states of exited $^{9}$Li have been measured by 32.7 MeV/nucleon $^{9}$Li beams bombarding on $^{208}$Pb target. Two resonant states are clearly observed with the excitation energies at 9.8 MeV and 12.6 MeV and spin-parity of 3/2$^{-}$ and 7/2$^{-}$ respectively. These two states are considered to be members of K$^π$=1/2$^{-}$ band. The spin-parity of them are identified by the method of angular correlation analysis and verified by the continuum discretized coupled channels (CDCC) calculation, which agrees with the prediction of the generator coordinate method (GCM). A monopole matrix element about 4 fm$^{2}$ for the 3/2$^{-}$ state is extracted from the distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA) calculation. These results strongly support the feature of clustering structure of two neutron-rich clusters in the neutron-rich nucleus $^{9}$Li for the first time.

Collective dynamics of large aspect ratio dusty plasma in an inhomogeneous plasma background: Formation of the co--rotating vortex series

In this paper, the collective dynamics of the large aspect ratio dusty plasma is studied over a wide range of discharge parameters. An inductively coupled diffused plasma, which creates an electrostatic trap to confine the negatively charged grains, is used to form a large volume (or large aspect ratio) dusty plasma at low pressure. For introducing the dust grains into the potential well, a unique technique using a secondary DC glow discharge plasma is employed. The dust dynamics is recorded in a 2-dimension (2D) plane at a given axial location. The dust fluid exhibits wave like behavior at low pressure (p < 0.06 mbar) and high rf power (P > 3 W). The mixed motion, waves and vortices, are observed at an intermediate gas pressure(p = 0.08 mbar) and low power (P < 3 W). Above the threshold value of gas pressure (p > 0.1 mbar), the clockwise and anti-clockwise co-rotating vortex series are observed on the edges of the dust cloud, whereas the particles in central region show the random motion. These vortices are only observed above a threshold width of the dust cloud. The streaming ions are considered the available free energy source to excite the waves in dust grain medium. The occurrence of the co-rotating vortices is understood on the basis of the charge gradient of dust particles which is orthogonal to the gravity. The charge gradient is a consequence of the plasma inhomogeneity from the central region to the outer edge of dust fluid. Since, a vortex has the characteristic size in the dissipative medium; therefore, a series of the co-rotating vortex on the both sides of dusty plasma is observed. The experimental results on the vortex formation and its multiplicity are compared to an available theoretical model and are found to be in close agreement.

The Spin-Reorientation Transition in TmFeO3

X-ray magnetic circular and linear dichroism (XMCD and XMLD) have been used to investigate the Fe magnetic response during the spin reorientation transition (SRT) in TmFeO3. These experiments are complemented with resonant magnetic diffraction experiments at the Tm M5 edge to study simultaneously the induced magnetic order in the Tm 4f shell and the behavior of the Tm orbitals through the SRT. Comparing the Fe XMLD results with neutron diffraction and magnetization measurements on the same sample indicate that the SRT has an enhanced temperature range in the near surface region. This view is supported by the resonant soft x-ray diffraction results at the Tm M5 edge. These find an induced magnetic moment on the Tm sites, which is well-described by a dipolar mean field model originating from the Fe moments. Even though such a model can describe the 4f response in the experiments, it is insufficient to describe the SRT even when considering a change in the 4f anisotropy. Moreover, the results of the Fe XMCD are indicative of a decoupling of spin canting and antiferromagnetic spin rotation in the near surface regime close to the SRT, which remains to be understood.

Effect of magnetic field on the hysteresis phenomena and floating potential oscillations in a reflex plasma source

An experimental investigation on the periodic and chaotic oscillations in a reflex plasma source in presence of magnetic field is presented. The experiment is conducted in a reflex plasma source, consisting of two cathodes and a ring anode. A penning type DC glow discharge in an uniform axial magnetic field is initiated in the background of argon gas. The current-voltage characteristics near the breakdown voltage show a hysteresis with two distinct discharge current regimes. The effect of magnetic field on the discharge current and floating potential oscillations is studied when the discharge is operated within this hysteresis loop. At a typical axial magnetic field, the discharge transits from high discharge current regime (beyond 4-5 mA), an oscillation free regime, to a low discharge current regime (less than 1 mA). Depending upon the discharge parameters, low discharge current regime shows either the periodic or chaotic oscillation in the frequency range of 1-50 KHz. The frequency of periodic oscillation increases with the increase in magnetic field up to 90 Gauss and with further increase in magnetic field, the periodic oscillation becomes chaotic in nature.

The QCD Equation of State to $\mathcal{O}(μ_B^6)$ from Lattice QCD

We calculated the QCD equation of state using Taylor expansions that include contributions from up to sixth order in the baryon, strangeness and electric charge chemical potentials. Calculations have been performed with the Highly Improved Staggered Quark action in the temperature range $T\in [135~{\rm MeV}, 330~{\rm MeV}]$ using up to four different sets of lattice cut-offs corresponding to lattices of size $N_σ^3\times N_τ$ with aspect ratio $N_σ/N_τ=4$ and $N_τ=6-16$. The strange quark mass is tuned to its physical value and we use two strange to light quark mass ratios $m_s/m_l=20$ and $27$, which in the continuum limit correspond to a pion mass of about $160$ MeV and $140$ MeV espectively. Sixth-order results for Taylor expansion coefficients are used to estimate truncation errors of the fourth-order expansion. We show that truncation errors are small for baryon chemical potentials less then twice the temperature ($μ_B\le 2T$). The fourth-order equation of state thus is suitable for the modeling of dense matter created in heavy ion collisions with center-of-mass energies down to $\sqrt{s_{NN}}\sim 12$ GeV. We provide a parametrization of basic thermodynamic quantities that can be readily used in hydrodynamic simulation codes. The results on up to sixth order expansion coefficients of bulk thermodynamics are used for the calculation of lines of constant pressure, energy and entropy densities in the $T$-$μ_B$ plane and are compared with the crossover line for the QCD chiral transition as well as with experimental results on freeze-out parameters in heavy ion collisions. These coefficients also provide estimates for the location of a possible critical point. We argue that results on sixth order expansion coefficients disfavor the existence of a critical point in the QCD phase diagram for $μ_B/T\le 2$ and $T/T_c(μ_B=0) > 0.9$.

Atomic Order in Non-Equilibrium Silicon-Germanium-Tin Semiconductors

The precise knowledge of the atomic order in monocrystalline alloys is fundamental to understand and predict their physical properties. With this perspective, we utilized laser-assisted atom probe tomography to investigate the three-dimensional distribution of atoms in non-equilibrium epitaxial Sn-rich group IV SiGeSn ternary semiconductors. Different atom probe statistical analysis tools including frequency distribution analysis, partial radial distribution functions, and nearest neighbor analysis were employed in order to evaluate and compare the behavior of the three elements to their spatial distributions in an ideal solid solution. This atomistic-level analysis provided clear evidence of an unexpected repulsive interaction between Sn and Si leading to the deviation of Si atoms from the theoretical random distribution. This departure from an ideal solid solution is supported by first principal calculations and attributed to the tendency of the system to reduce its mixing enthalpy throughout the layer-by-layer growth process.

Experimental observation of self excited co--rotating multiple vortices in a dusty plasma with inhomogeneous plasma background

We report an experimental observation of multiple co--rotating vortices in a extended dust column in the background of non--uniform diffused plasma. Inductively coupled RF discharge is initiated in the background of argon gas in the source region which later found to diffuse in the main experimental chamber. A secondary DC glow discharge plasma is produced to introduce the dust particles into the plasma. These micron sized poly-disperse dust particles get charged in the plasma environment and transported by the ambipolar electric field of the diffused plasma and found to confine in the potential well, where the resultant electric field of the diffused plasma (ambipolar E--field) and glass wall charging (sheath E--field) hold the micron sized particles against the gravity. Multiple co--rotating (anti--clockwise) dust vortices are observed in the dust cloud for a particular discharge condition. The transition from multiple to single dust vortex is observed when input RF power is lowered. Occurrence of these vortices are explained on the basis of the charge gradient of dust particles which is orthogonal to the ion drag force. The charge gradient is a consequence of the plasma inhomogeneity along the dust cloud length. The detailed nature and the reason for multiple vortices are still under investigation through further experiments, however, preliminary qualitative understanding is discussed based on characteristic scale length of dust vortex. There is a characteristic size of the vortex in the dusty plasma so that multiple vortices is possible to form in the extended dusty plasma with inhomogeneous plasma background. The experimental results on the vortex motion of particles are compared with a theoretical model and found some agreement.

New Empirical Formula for ({/gamma}, n) reaction cross section near to GDR Peak for elements with Z \geq 60

A new empirical formula has been developed that describes the $(γ, n)$ nuclear reaction cross sections for the isotopes with $Z \geq 60$. The results were supported by calculations using TALYS - 1.6, EMPIRE - 3.2.2 nuclear modular codes. The energy region for incident photon energy have been selected near to the giant dipole resonance (GDR) peak energy. The evaluated empirical data were compared with available data in the experimental data library - EXFOR. The data produced using TALYS - 1.6 and EMPIRE - 3.2.2 were in good agreement with experimental data. We have tested and presented the reproducibility of the present new empirical formula. We observed the reproducibility of the new empirical formula near to GDR peak energy is in good agreement with the experimental data and remarkable dependency on key nuclei properties: the neutron, proton and atomic number of the nuclei. The behavior of nucleus near GDR peak energy, and dependency of GDR peak on the isotopic nature were predicted. An effort has been made to explain the deformation of the GDR peak in $(γ, n)$ nuclear reaction cross section for some isotopes, which could not reproduce with TALYS - 1.6 and EMPIRE - 3.2.2. The evaluated data have been presented for the isotopes 180W, 183W, 202Pb, 203Pb, 204Pb, 205Pb, 231Pa, 232U, 237U and 239Pu that have no previous measurements.

Emergent Universe with particle production

The possibility of an emergent universe solution to Einstein's field equations allowing for an irreversible creation of matter at the expense of the gravitational field is shown. With the universe being chosen as spatially flat FRW spacetime together with equation of state proposed in [17], the solution exists when the ratio of the phenomenological matter creation rate to the number density times the Hubble parameter is a number $β$ of the order of unity and independent of time. The thermodynamic behaviour is also determined for this solution. Interestingly, we also find that an emergent universe scenario is present with usual equation of state in cosmology when the matter creation rate is chosen to be a constant. More general class of emergent universe solutions are also discussed.

The correlation between quarter point angle and nuclear radius

The main objective of the present work is to correlate quarter-point angle and nuclear radius or nuclear matter distribution. Various phenomenological formulae with parameters for strong absorption radius Rs are obtained and compared by fitting the experimental data of quarter point angle extracted from nuclear elastic scattering reaction systems. The parameterized formula of Rs related to the isospin and binding energy is recommended, that gives a good reproduction of nuclear matter radii of halo nuclei.

Propagation characteristics of dust$-$acoustic waves in presence of a floating cylindrical object in the DC discharge plasma

The experimental observation of the self$-$excited dust acoustic waves (DAWs) and its propagation characteristics in the absence and presence of a floating cylindrical object are investigated. The experiments are carried out in a direct current (DC) glow discharge dusty plasma in the background of argon gas. Dust particles are found levitated at the interface of plasma and cathode sheath region. The DAWs are spontaneously excited in the dust medium and found to propagate in the direction of ion drift (along the gravity) above a threshold discharge current at lower pressure. The excitation of such low frequency wave is a result of the ion--dust streaming instability in the dust cloud. The characteristics of the propagating dust acoustic wave get modified in presence of a floating cylindrical object of radius larger than the dust Debye length. Instead of propagating in the vertical direction, the DAWs are found to propagate obliquely in presence of the floating object (kept either vertically or horizontally). In addition, horizontally aligned floating object gives rise to form a wave structure in the cone shaped dust cloud in the sheath region. The change in the propagation characteristics of DAWs are explained on the basis of modified potential (or electric field) distribution, which is a consequence of coupling of sheaths formed around the cylindrical object and the cathode.

Transport and trapping of dust particles in a potential well created by inductively coupled diffused plasma

A versatile linear dusty (complex) plasma device is designed to study the transport and dynamical behavior of dust particles in a large volume. Diffused inductively coupled plasma is generated in the background of argon gas. A novel technique is used to introduce the dust particles in the main plasma by striking a secondary direct current (DC) glow discharge. These dust particles are found to get trapped in an electrostatic potential well which is formed due to the combination of the ambipolar electric field caused by diffusive plasma and the field produced by the charged glass wall of the vacuum chamber. According to the requirements, the volume of the dust cloud can be controlled very precisely by tuning the plasma and discharge parameters. The present device can be used to address the underlying physics behind the transport of dust particles, self excited dust acoustic waves and instabilities. The detailed design of this device, plasma production and characterization, trapping and transport of the dust particle and some of the preliminary experimental results are presented.

Ferroelectricity in underdoped La-based cuprates

Doping a parent antiferromagnetic Mott insulator in cuprates leads to short-range electronic correlations and eventually to high-Tc superconductivity. However, the nature of charge correlations in the lightly doped cuprates remains unclear. Understanding the intermediate electronic phase in the phase diagram (between the parent insulator and the high-Tc superconductor) is expected to elucidate the complexity both inside and outside the superconducting dome, and in particular in the underdoped region. One such phase is ferroelectricity whose origin and relation to the properties of high-Tc superconductors is subject of current research. Here we demonstrate that ferroelectricity and the associated magnetoelectric coupling are in fact common in La-214 cuprates namely, La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_4$, La$_2$Li$_x$Cu$_{1-x}$O$_4$ and La$_2$CuO$_{4+x}$. It is proposed that ferroelectricity results from local CuO$_6$ octahedral distortions, associated with the dopant atoms and/or clustering of the doped charge carriers, which break spatial inversion symmetry at the local scale whereas magnetoelectric coupling can be tuned through Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction.

The Fractal Geometrical Properties of Nuclei

We present a new idea to understand the structure of nuclei, which is comparing to the liquid drop model. After discussing the probability that the nuclear system may be a fractal object with the characteristic of self-similarity, the nuclear irregular structure properties and the self-similarity characteristic are considered to be an intrinsic aspects of nuclear structure properties. For the description of nuclear geometric properties, nuclear fractal dimension is an irreplaceable variable similar to the nuclear radius. In order to determine these two variables, a new nuclear potential energy formula which is related to the fractal dimension is put forward and the phenomenological semi-empirical Bethe-Weizsacker binding energy formula is modified using the fractal geometric theory. And one important equation set with two equations is obtained, which is related to the conception that the fractal dimension should be a dynamical parameter in the process of nuclear synthesis. The fractal dimensions of the light nuclei are calculated and their physical meanings are discussed. We have compared the nuclear fractal mean density radii with the radii calculated by the liquid drop model for the light stable and unstable nuclei using rational nuclear fractal structure types. In the present model of fractal nuclear structure there is an obvious feature comparing to the liquid drop model, since the present model can reflect the geometric informations of the nuclear structure, especially for the nuclei with clusters, such as the α-cluster nuclei and halo nuclei.
