Finite temperature effective field theory and two-band superfluidity in Fermi gases

We develop a description of fermionic superfluids in terms of an effective field theory for the pairing order parameter. Our effective field theory improves on the existing Ginzburg - Landau theory for superfluid Fermi gases in that it is not restricted to temperatures close to the critical temperature. This is achieved by taking into account long-range fluctuations to all orders. The results of the present effective field theory compare well with the results obtained in the framework of the Bogoliubov - de Gennes method. The advantage of an effective field theory over Bogoliubov - de Gennes calculations is that much less computation time is required. In the second part of the paper, we extend the effective field theory to the case of a two-band superfluid. The present theory allows us to reveal the presence of two healing lengths in the two-band superfluids, to analyze the finite-temperature vortex structure in the BEC-BCS crossover, and to obtain the ground state parameters and spectra of collective excitations. For the Leggett mode our treatment provides an interpretation of the observation of this mode in two-band superconductors.

Phase correlations and quasicondensate in a two-dimensional ultracold Fermi gas

The interplay between dimensionality, coherence and interaction in superfluid Fermi gases is analyzed by the phase correlation function of the field of fermionic pairs. We calculate this phase correlation function for a two-dimensional superfluid Fermi gas with $s$-wave interactions within the Gaussian pair fluctuation formalism. The spatial behavior of the correlation function is shown to exhibit a rapid (exponential) decay at short distances and a characteristic algebraic decay at large distances, with an exponent matching that expected from Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless theory of 2D Bose superfluids. We conclude that the Gaussian pair fluctuation approximation is able to capture the physics of quasi long-range order in two-dimensional Fermi gases.

Finite temperature effective field theory for dark solitons in superfluid Fermi gases

We use a finite temperature effective field theory recently developed for superfluid Fermi gases to investigate the properties of dark solitons in these superfluids. Our approach provides an analytic solution for the dip in the order parameter and the phase profile accross the soliton, which can be compared with results obtained in the framework of the Bogoliubov - de Gennes equations. We present results in the whole range of the BCS-BEC crossover, for arbitrary temperatures, and taking into account Gaussian fluctuations about the saddle point. The obtained analytic solutions yield an exact energy-momentum relation for a dark soliton showing that the soliton in a Fermi gas behaves like a classical particle even at nonzero temperatures. The spatial profile of the pair field and for the parameters of state for the soliton are analytically studied. In the strong-coupling regime and/or for sufficiently high temperatures, the obtained analytic solutions match well the numeric results obtained using the Bogoliubov - de Gennes equations.

Interface superconductivity in LaAlO$_{3}$-SrTiO$_{3}$ heterostructures

The interface superconductivity in LaAlO$_{3}$-SrTiO$_{3}$ heterostructures reveals a non-monotonic behavior of the critical temperature as a function of the two-dimensional density of charge carriers. We develop a theoretical description of interface superconductivity in strongly polar heterostructures, based on the dielectric function formalism. The density dependence of the critical temperature is calculated accounting for all phonon branches including different types of optical (interface and half-space) and acoustic phonons. The LO- and acoustic-phonon-mediated electron-electron interaction is shown to be the dominating mechanism governing the superconducting phase transition in the heterostructure.

Optical conductivity of a strong-coupling polaron

The polaron optical conductivity is derived within the strong-coupling expansion, which is asymptotically exact in the strong-coupling limit. The polaron optical conductivity band is provided by the multiphonon optical transitions. The polaron optical conductivity spectra calculated within our analytic strong-coupling approach and the numerically accurate Diagrammatic Quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) data are in a good agreement with each other at large $α\gtrapprox 9$.

Reply to "On the cutoff parameter in the translation-invariant theory of the strong coupling polaron"

The present work is a reply to the paper [1]. It is proven that the argumentation of Ref. [1] is inconsistent. The variational functional for the polaron ground state energy considered in Ref. [1] contains an incomplete recoil energy. Since the variational functional of Ref. [1] is incomplete, it is not proven to provide a variational upper bound for the polaron ground-state energy. The same conclusion follows also for the bipolaron ground-state energy.

Pseudogap and preformed pairs in the imbalanced Fermi gas in two dimensions

The physics of the pseudogap state is intimately linked with the pairing mechanism that gives rise to superfluidity in quantum gases and to superconductivity in high-Tc cuprates, and therefore, both in quantum gases and superconductors, the pseudogap state and preformed pairs have been under intensive experimental scrutiny. Here, we develop a path integral treatment that provides a divergence-free description of the paired state in two-dimensional Fermi gases. Within this formalism, we derive the pseudogap temperature and the pair fluctuation spectral function, and compare these results with the recent experimental measument of the pairing in the two-dimensional Fermi gas. The removal of the infrared divergence in the number equations is shown both numerically and analytically, through a study of the long-wavelength and low-energy limit of the pair fluctuation density. Besides the pseudogap temperature, also the pair formation temperature and the critical temperature for superfluidity are derived. The latter corresponds to the Berezinski-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) temperature. The pseudogap temperature, which coincides with the pair formation temperature in mean field, is found to be suppressed with respect to the pair formation temperature by fluctuations. This suppression is strongest for large binding energies of the pairs. Finally, we investigate how the pair formation temperature, the pseudogap temperature and the BKT temperature behave as a function of both binding energy and imbalance between the pairing partners in the Fermi gas. This allows to set up phase diagrams for the two-dimensional Fermi gas, in which the superfluid phase, the phase-fluctuating quasicondensate, and the normal state can be identified.

Microscopic mechanisms for the Fermi-liquid behavior of Nb-doped strontium titanate

The relaxation rate in Nb-doped strontium titanate involving different scattering channels is investigated theoretically. It is demonstrated that the total relaxation rate in SrTiO_{3} is provided mainly by two mechanisms. The Baber electron-electron scattering with participation of both Coulomb and phonon-mediated electron-electron interactions provides the T^{2}-dependence of the relaxation rate. The scattering on the potential landscape caused by impurities is responsible for the residual relaxation rate at low temperatures. A good agreement with experiment is achieved accounting for all phonon branches in strontium titanate, both the optical and acoustic phonons. It is shown that the effective electron-electron interaction can be attractive in strontium titanate, and provides superconductivity at low temperatures and Fermi-liquid response in a wide range of temperatures. Thus our microscopic model supports the notion that superconductivity and Fermi-liquid properties of n-type SrTiO_{3} have a common origin.

Representative longitudinal optical phonon modes in polar semiconductor quantum dots

Existence of representative longitudinal optical (LO) phonon modes is theoretically discussed for the case of polar semiconductor cylindrical quantum dots embedded in a semiconductor matrix. The approach is developed within the dielectric continuum model considering the Fröhlich interaction between electrons and the confined LO phonons. The theory is applied to cylindrical GaAs/AlAs quantum dots within an adiabatic treatment.

Pair excitations and parameters of state of imbalanced Fermi gases at finite temperatures

The spectra of low-lying pair excitations for an imbalanced two-component superfluid Fermi gas are analytically derived within the path-integral formalism taking into account Gaussian fluctuations about the saddle point. The spectra are obtained for nonzero temperatures, both with and without imbalance, and for arbitrary interaction strength. On the basis of the pair excitation spectrum, we have calculated the thermodynamic parameters of state of cold fermions and the first and second sound velocities. The parameters of pair excitations show a remarkable agreement with the Monte Carlo data and with experiment.

Feynman's path-integral polaron treatment approached using time-ordered operator calculus

The Feynman all-coupling variational approach for the polaron is re-formulated and extended using the Hamiltonian formalism with time-ordered operator calculus. Special attention is devoted to the excited polaron states. The energy levels and the inverse lifetimes of the excited polaron states are, for the first time, explicitly derived within this all-coupling approach. Remarkable agreement of the obtained transition energies with the peak positions of the polaron optical conductivity calculated using diagrammatic quantum Monte Carlo is obtained.

Many-body large polaron optical conductivity in SrTi$_{1-x}$Nb$_x$O$_3$

Recent experimental data on the optical conductivity of niobium doped SrTiO$_{3}$ are interpreted in terms of a gas of large polarons with effective coupling constant $α_{eff}\approx2$. The {theoretical approach takes into account} many-body effects, the electron-phonon interaction with multiple LO-phonon branches, and the degeneracy and the anisotropy of the Ti t$_{2g}$ conduction band. {Based on the Fröhlich interaction, the many-body large-polaron theory} provides an interpretation for the essential characteristics, except -- interestingly -- for the unexpectedly large intensity of a peak at $\sim130$ meV, of the observed optical conductivity spectra of SrTi$_{1-x}$Nb$_{x}$O$_{3}$ \textit{without} any adjustment of material parameters.

The effect of population imbalance on the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless phase transition in a superfluid Fermi gas

The Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) mechanism describes the breakdown of superfluidity in a two-dimensional Bose gas or a two-dimensional gas of paired fermions. In the latter case, a population imbalance between the two pairing partners in the Fermi mixture is known to influence pairing characteristics. Here, we investigate the effects of imbalance on the two-dimensional BKT superfluid transition, and show that superfluidity is even more sensitive to imbalance than for three dimensional systems. Finite-temperature phase diagrams are derived using the functional integral formalism in combination with a hydrodynamic action functional for the phase fluctuations. This allow to identify a phase separation region and tricritical points due to imbalance. In contrast to superfluidity in the three-dimensional case, the effect of imbalance is also pronounced in the strong-coupling regime.

Phase separation in imbalanced fermion superfluids beyond mean-field

The density distributions of the two components of a trapped, ultracold Fermi gas with population imbalance reveal the effect of imbalance on superfluid pairing. We develop a path-integral derivation of the density, that takes into account both fluctuations beyond mean-field and effects of nonzero temperature. The calculated density profiles compare favorably to the measured density profiles, and illustrate the necessity to incorporate both quantum fluctuations and finite temperature effects. The temperature dependence of the density profiles, especially near the superfluid-normal interface, allows determining the temperature of the superfluid core in current experiments.

Imbalanced d-wave superfluids in the BCS-BEC crossover regime at finite temperatures

Singlet pairing in a Fermi superfluid is frustrated when the amounts of fermions of each pairing partner are unequal. The resulting `imbalanced superfluid' has been realized experimentally for ultracold atomic gases with s-wave interactions. Inspired by high-temperature superconductivity, we investigate the case of d-wave interactions, and find marked differences from the s-wave superfluid. Whereas s-wave imbalanced Fermi gases tend to phase separate in real space, in a balanced condensate and an imbalanced normal halo, we show that the d-wave gas can phase separate in reciprocal space so that imbalance and superfluidity can coexist spatially. We show that the mechanism explaining this property is the creation of polarized excitations in the nodes of the gap. The Sarma mechanism, present only at nonzero temperatures for the s-wave case, is still applicable in the temperature zero limit for the d-wave case. As a result, the d-wave BCS superfluid is more robust with respect to imbalance, and a region of the phase diagram can be identified where the s-wave BCS superfluidity is suppressed whereas the d-wave superfluidity is not. When these results are extended into the BEC limit of strongly bound molecules, the symmetry of the order parameter matters less. The effects of fluctuations beyond mean field is taken into account in the calculation of the structure factor and the critical temperature. The poles of the structure factor (corresponding to bound molecular states) are less damped in the d-wave case as compared to s-wave. On the BCS side of the unitarity limit, the critical temperature follows the temperature corresponding to the pair binding energy and as such will also be more robust against imbalance. Possible routes for the experimental observation of the d-wave superfluidity have been discussed.

On the ground state energy of a gas of interacting polarons in a magnetic field

The ground-state energy of a three-dimensional polaron gas in a magnetic field is investigated. An upper bound for the ground-state energy is derived within a variational approach which is based on a many-body generalization of the Lee-Low-Pines transformation. The basic contributing ingredients found are the ground-state energy and the static structure factor of the homogeneous electron gas in a magnetic field. Both these quantities are derived in the Hartree-Fock approximation. The resulting ground-state energy of the polaron gas is analyzed as a function of the electron density and of the magnetic field strength.

Comment on "Froehlich Mass in GaAs-Based Structures"

The results of recent measurements of the cyclotron resonance (CR) spectra for a GaAs quantum well are interpreted in terms of the resonant magnetopolaron effect. Owing to this effect, the CR peaks split near the TO-phonon frequency and also change their positions with respect to those obtained without electron-phonon interaction. The theoretical peak positions of the CR spectra calculated within the many-polaron approach compare well with experimental data, as distinct from the CR energies calculated without electron-phonon interaction, which show no particular features in the region of the optical-phonon frequencies. We conclude that the Froehlich polaron concept is valid and even necessary to interpret the CR spectra of quantum wells.
