Variational path-integral treatment of a translation invariant many-polaron system

A translation invariant N-polaron system is investigated at arbitrary electron-phonon coupling strength, using a variational principle for path integrals for identical particles. An upper bound for the ground state energy is found as a function of the number of spin up and spin down polarons, taking the electron-electron interaction and the Fermi statistics into account. The resulting addition energies and the criteria for multipolaron formation are discussed.

Ground state and optical conductivity of interacting polarons in a quantum dot

The ground-state energy, the addition energies and the optical absorption spectra are derived for interacting polarons in parabolic quantum dots in three and two dimensions. A path integral formalism for identical particles is used in order to take into account the fermion statistics. The approach is applied to both closed-shell and open-shell systems of interacting polarons. Using a generalization of the Jensen-Feynman variational principle, the ground-state energy of a confined N-polaron system is analyzed as a function of N and of the electron-phonon coupling constant. As distinct from the few-electron systems without the electron-phonon interaction, three types of spin polarization are possible for the ground state of the few-polaron systems: (i) a spin-polarized state, (ii) a state where the spin is determined by Hund's rule, (iii) a state with the minimal possible spin. A transition from a state fulfilling Hund's rule, to a spin-polarized state occurs when decreasing the electron density. In the strong-coupling limit, the system of interacting polarons turns into a state with the minimal possible spin. These transitions should be experimentally observable in the optical absorption spectra of quantum dots.

Optical properties of polaronic excitons in stacked quantum dots

We present a theoretical investigation of the optical properties of polaronic excitons in stacked self-assembled quantum dots, which is based on the non-adiabatic approach. A parallelepiped-shaped quantum dot is considered as a model for a self-assembled quantum dot in a stack. The exciton-phonon interaction is taken into account for all phonon modes specific for these quantum dots (bulk-like, half-space and interface phonons). We show that the coupling between stacked quantum dots can lead to a strong enhancement of the optical absorption in the spectral ranges characteristic for phonon satellites.

Cyclotron Resonance of an Interacting Polaron Gas in a Quantum Well. Magneto-Plasmon-Phonon Mixing

Cyclotron-resonance (CR) spectra of a gas of interacting polarons confined in a GaAs/AlAs quantum well are theoretically investigated taking into account the magneto-plasmon-phonon mixing and band nonparabolicity. Contributions of different magneto-plasmon-phonon modes to the total magneto-polaron coupling strength are investigated as a function of the electron density. It is confirmed theoretically, that the resonant magneto-polaron coupling in a high-density GaAs/AlAs quantum well occurs near the GaAs TO-phonon frequency rather than near the GaAs LO-phonon frequency. Calculated CR spectra are in agreement with recent experimental data.

Optical spectra of quantum dots: effects of non-adiabaticity

It is shown that in many cases an adequate description of optical spectra of semiconductor quantum dots requires a treatment beyond the commonly used adiabatic approximation. We have developed a theory of phonon-assisted optical transitions in semiconductor quantum dots, which takes into account non-adiabaticity of the exciton-phonon system. Effects of non-adiabaticity lead to a mixing of different exciton and phonon states that provides a key to the understanding of surprisingly high intensities of phonon satellites observed in photoluminescence spectra of quantum dots. A breakdown of the adiabatic approximation gives an explanation also for discrepancies between the serial law, observed in multi-phonon optical spectra of some quantum dots, and the Franck-Condon progression, prescribed by the adiabatic approach.

Characterization of shell filling of interacting polarons in a quantum dot through their optical absorption

The method for calculating the ground-state energy and the optical conductivity spectra is developed for a system of a finite number of interacting arbitrary-coupling polarons in a spherical quantum dot with a parabolic confinement potential. The path-integral formalism for identical particles is used in order to take into account the fermion statistics. Using a generalization of the Jensen-Feynman variational principle, the ground-state energy of a confined N-polaron system is analyzed as a function of N and of the electron-phonon coupling strength. The calculated optical conductivity spectra of the N-polaron system in a quantum dot manifest features related to ground-state transitions between states with different total spin.

Coupled Ripplon-Plasmon Modes in a Multielectron Bubble

In multielectron bubbles, the electrons form an effectively two-dimensional layer at the inner surface of the bubble in helium. The modes of oscillation of the bubble surface (the ripplons) are influenced by the charge redistribution of the electrons along the surface. The dispersion relation for these charge redistribution modes (`longitudinal plasmons') is derived and the coupling of these modes to the ripplons is analysed. We find that the ripplon-plasmon coupling in a multielectron bubble differs markedly from that of electrons a flat helium surface. An equation is presented relating the spherical harmonic components of the charge redistribution to those of the shape deformation of the bubble.

Wigner lattice of ripplopolarons in a multielectron bubble in helium

The properties of ripplonic polarons in a multielectron bubble in liquid helium are investigated on the basis of a path-integral variational method. We find that the two-dimensional electron gas can form deep dimples in the helium surface, or ripplopolarons, to solidify as a Wigner crystal. We derive the experimental conditions of temperature, pressure and number of electrons in the bubble for this phase to be realized. This predicted state is distinct from the usual Wigner lattice of electrons, in that it melts by the dissociation of the ripplopolarons, when the electrons shed their localizing dimple as the pressure on the multielectron bubble drops below a critical value.

Reply to the comment by E. Menendez-Proupin on "Multi-phonon Raman scattering in semiconductor nanocrystals: Importance of non-adiabatic transitions"

In our recent paper [Phys. Rev. B 65, 075316 (2002)], the selection rules for the Raman scattering in spherical nanocrystals are analyzed. Here we show, that a physically expedient choice of the coordinate system, related to the polarization vector of the incoming or scattered light, simplifies and clarifies the analysis.

Multi-phonon Raman scattering in semiconductor nanocrystals: importance of non-adiabatic transitions

Multi-phonon Raman scattering in semiconductor nanocrystals is treated taking into account both adiabatic and non-adiabatic phonon-assisted optical transitions. Because phonons of various symmetries are involved in scattering processes, there is a considerable enhancement of intensities of multi-phonon peaks in nanocrystal Raman spectra. Cases of strong and weak band mixing are considered in detail. In the first case, fundamental scattering takes place via internal electron-hole states and is participated by s- and d-phonons, while in the second case, when the intensity of the one-phonon Raman peak is strongly influenced by the interaction of an electron and of a hole with interface imperfections (e. g., with trapped charge), p-phonons are most active. Calculations of Raman scattering spectra for CdSe and PbS nanocrystals give a good quantitative agreement with recent experimental results.

Photoluminescence Spectra of Quantum Dots: Enhanced Efficiency of the Electron-Phonon Interaction

A theory of photoluminescence in semiconductor quantum dots is developed which relies on two key ingredients. First, it takes into account non-adiabaticity of the exciton-phonon system. Second, it includes the multimode dielectric model of LO-phonons and of the electron-phonon interaction in confined systems. The role of non-adiabaticity is shown to be of paramount importance in spherical quantum dots, where the lowest one-exciton state can be degenerate or quasi-degenerate. For various quantum dot structures, the calculated intensities of phonon satellites as a function of temperature, excitation energy and size of quantum dots are in a fair agreement with experimental data on photoluminescence.

Optical Absorption Spectra of Bipolarons

The absorption of large bipolarons is investigated using the path-integral method. The response of a bipolaron to an external electromagnetic field is derived in the framework of the memory-function approach. The bipolaron optical absorption spectrum consists of a series of relatively narrow peaks. The peculiarities of the bipolaron optical absorption as a function of the frequency of the electromagnetic field may be attributed to the transitions involving relaxed excited states and scattering states of a bipolaron.

Many-polaron system confined to a quantum dot: ground-state energy and optical absorption

We find for the first time the ground state energy and the optical absorption spectra for N electrons (holes) interacting with each other and with the longitudinal optical (LO) phonons at an arbitrary electron-phonon coupling strength $α$ in a parabolic confinement potential. A recently developed path integral formalism for identical particles is used in order to account for the fermion statistics. The approach is applicable to closed and open shells. Using an extension of the Jensen-Feynman variational principle, the ground state energy of the N-polarons system in a parabolic confinement potential is analyzed as a function of N and $α$. A ferromagnetic-to-nonmagnetic transition is shown to occur between states with different total spin of the system in the case of strong electron-phonon interaction. This transition is manifested through the optical absorption spectra and should be experimentally observable. Strong mixing between zero-phonon and one-phonon states is revealed in the optical absorption spectrum, when the confinement frequency parameter is in resonance with the LO phonon frequency ("confinement-phonon resonance"). Moments of the optical absorption spectra are calculated for a N-polaron system in a parabolic quantum dot.

Bipolaron Binding in Quantum Wires

A theory of bipolaron states in quantum wires with a parabolic potential well is developed applying the Feynman variational principle. The basic parameters of the bipolaron ground state (the binding energy, the number of phonons in the bipolaron cloud, the effective mass, and the bipolaron radius) are studied as a function of sizes of the potential well. Two cases are considered in detail: a cylindrical quantum wire and a planar quantum wire. Analytical expressions for the bipolaron parameters are obtained at large and small sizes of the quantum well. It is shown that at $R\gg 1$ [where $R$ means the radius (halfwidth) of a cylindrical (planar) quantum wire, expressed in Feynman units], the influence of confinement on the bipolaron binding energy is described by the function $\sim 1/R^{2}$ for both cases, while at small sizes this influence is different in each case. In quantum wires, the bipolaron binding energy $W(R) $ increases logarithmically with decreasing radius. The shapes and the sizes of a nanostructure, which are favorable for observation of stable bipolaron states, are determined.
