Spectroscopy of $^{196}$Hg using Digital INGA at VECC, Kolkata

Spectroscopic investigation of the $^{196}$Hg (Z=80, N=116) was carried out using the Indian National Gamma Array (INGA) setup at the Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre (VECC), Kolkata. Analysis of the acquired data led to the identification of new $γ$-ray transitions and levels in the excitation pattern of the nucleus along with the spin-parity assignments thereof. The latter were either previously absent or had been tentatively identified. Theoretical interpretation of the level structure obtained from these efforts can be pursued with appropriate model calculations.

Uncertainty Quantification of Tunable Elastic Metamaterials using Polynomial Chaos

Owing to their periodic and intricate configurations, metamaterials engineered for acoustic and elastic wave control inevitably suffer from manufacturing anomalies and deviate from theoretical dispersion predictions. This work exploits the Polynomial Chaos theory to quantify the magnitude and extent of these deviations and assess their impact on the desired behavior. It is shown that uncertainties stemming from surface roughness, tolerances, and other inconsistencies in a metamaterial's unit cell parameters alter the targetted band gap width, location and the confidence level with which it is guaranteed. The effect of uncertainties are projected from a Bloch-wave dispersion analysis of three distinct phononic and resonant cellular configurations and are further confirmed in the frequency response the finite structures. The analysis concludes with a unique algorithm intended to guide the design of metamaterials in the presence of system uncertainties.

Universal critical behavior in the ferromagnetic superconductor Eu(Fe$_{0.75}$Ru$_{0.25}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$

The study of universal critical behavior is a crucial issue in a continuous phase transition, which groups various critical phenomena into universality classes for revealing microscopic electronic behaviors. The understanding of the nature of magnetism in Eu-based ferromagnetic superconductors is largely impeded by the infeasibility of performing inelastic neutron scattering measurements to deduce the microscopic magnetic behaviors and the effects on the superconductivity, due to the significant neutron absorption effect of natural $^{152}$Eu and unavailability of large single crystals. However, by systematically combining the neutron diffraction experiment, the first-principles calculations, and the quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we have obtained a perfectly consistent universal critical exponent value of $β=0.385(13)$ experimentally and theoretically for Eu(Fe$_{0.75}$Ru$_{0.25}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$, from which the magnetism in the Eu-based ferromagnetic superconductors is identified as the universal class of a three-dimensional anisotropic quantum Heisenberg model with long-range magnetic exchange coupling. This study not only clarifies the nature of microscopic magnetic behaviors in the Eu-based ferromagnetic superconductors, but also opens a new avenue of systemic methodology for studying the universal critical behaviors associated with magnetic phase transitions in the area of magnetism and the spin fluctuations effects on the unconventional superconductivity.

Coexistence of Eu-antiferromagnetism and pressure-induced superconductivity in EuFe2As2 single crystal

By performing high-pressure single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements, the evolution of structure and magnetic ordering in EuFe2As2 under hydrostatic pressure were investigated. Both the tetragonal-toorthorhombic structural transition and the Fe spin-density-wave (SDW) transition are gradually suppressed and become decoupled with increasing pressure. The antiferromagnetic order of the Eu sublattice is, however, robust against the applied pressure up to 24.7 kbar, without showing any change of the ordering temperature. Under the pressure of 24.7 kbar, the lattice parameters of EuFe2As2 display clear anomalies at 27(3) K, well consistent with the superconducting transition observed in previous high-pressure resistivity measurements. Such an anomalous thermal expansion around Tc strongly suggests the appearance of bulk superconductivity and strong electron-lattice coupling in EuFe2As2 induced by the hydrostatic pressure. The coexistence of long-range ordered Eu-antiferromagnetism and pressure-induced superconductivity is quite rare in the EuFe2As2-based iron pnictides.

Non-collinear magnetic structure and anisotropic magnetoelastic coupling in cobalt pyrovanadate Co2V2O7

The Co2V2O7 is recently reported to exhibit amazing magnetic field-induced magnetization plateaus and ferroelectricity, but its magnetic ground state remains ambiguous due to its structural complexity. Magnetometry measurements, and time-of-flight neutron powder diffraction (NPD) have been employed to study the structural and magnetic properties of Co2V2O7, which consists of two non-equivalent Co sites. Upon cooling below the Neél temperature TN = 6.3 K, we observe magnetic Bragg peaks at 2K in NPD which indicated the formation of long range magnetic order of Co2+ moments. After symmetry analysis and magnetic structure refinement, we demonstrate that Co2V2O7 possesses a complicated non-collinear magnetic ground state with Co moments mainly located in b-c plane and forming a non-collinear spin-chain-like structure along the c-axis. The ab initio calculations demonstrate that the non-collinear magnetic structure is more stable than various ferromagnetic states at low temperature. The non-collinear magnetic structure with canted up-up-down-down spin configuration is considered as the origin of magnetoelectric coupling in Co2V2O7 because the inequivalent exchange striction induced by the spin-exchange interaction between the neighboring spins is the driving force of ferroelectricity. Besides, it is found that the deviation of lattice parameters a and b is opposite below TN, while the lattice parameter c and stay almost constant below TN, evidencing the anisotropic magnetoelastic coupling in Co2V2O7.

A low-frequency study of recently identified double-double radio galaxies

In order to understand the possible mechanisms of recurrent jet activity in radio galaxies and quasars, which are still unclear, we have identified such sources with a large range of linear sizes (220 $-$ 917 kpc), and hence time scales of episodic activity. Here we present high-sensitivity 607-MHz Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) images of 21 possible double-double radio galaxies (DDRGs) identified from the FIRST survey to confirm their episodic nature. These GMRT observations show that none of the inner compact components suspected to be hot-spots of the inner doubles are cores having a flat radio spectrum, confirming the episodic nature of these radio sources. We have indentified a new DDRG with a candidate quasar, and have estimated the upper spectral age limits for eight sources which showed marginal evidence of steepening at higher frequencies. The estimated age limits (11 $-$ 52 Myr) are smaller than those of the large-sized ($\sim$ 1 Mpc) DDRGs.

Spin reorientation of the Fe moments in Eu$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$: Evidence for a strong interplay of Eu and Fe magnetism

Using complementary polarized and unpolarized single-crystal neutron diffraction, we have investigated the temperature-dependent magnetic structures of Eu$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$. Upon 50 \% dilution of the Eu sites with isovalent Ca$^{2+}$, the Eu sublattice is found to be still long-range ordered below $\mathit{T_{Eu}}$ = 10 K, in the A-typed antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure. The moment size of Eu$^{2+}$ spins is estimated to be as large as 6.74(4) $μ_{B}$ at 2.5 K. The Fe sublattice undergoes a spin-density-wave transition at $\mathit{T_{SDW}}$ = 192(2) K and displays an in-plane AFM structure above $\mathit{T_{Eu}}$. However, at 2.5 K, the Fe$^{2+}$ moments are found to be ordered in a canted AFM structure with a canting angle of 14(4)° out of the $\mathit{ab}$ plane. The spin reorientation of Fe below the AFM ordering temperature of Eu provides a direct evidence of a strong interplay between the two magnetic sublattices in Eu$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$.

Probing right handed neutrinos at the LHeC and lepton colliders using fat jet signatures

The inclusion of heavy neutral leptons (right-handed neutrinos) to the Standard Model (SM) particle content is one of the best motivated ways to account for the observed neutrino masses and flavor mixing. The modification of the charged and neutral currents from active-sterile mixing of the neutral leptons can provide novel signatures which can be tested at the future collider experiments. In this article, we explore the discovery prospect of a very heavy right handed neutrino to probe such extensions at the future collider experiments like Large Hadron electron Collider (LHeC) and liner collider. We consider the production of the heavy neutrino via the $t$ and $s$-channel processes and its subsequent decays into the semi-leptonic final states. We specifically focus on the scenario where the gauge boson produced from heavy neutrino decay is highly boosted, leading to a fat-jet. We study the bounds on the sterile neutrino properties from several past experiments and compare with our results.

Spiral magnetic ordering of the Eu moments in EuNi$_{2}$As$_{2}$

The ground-state magnetic structure of EuNi$_{2}$As$_{2}$ was investigated by single-crystal neutron diffraction. At base temperature, the Eu$^{2+}$ moments are found to form an incommensurate antiferromagnetic spiral-like structure with a magnetic propagation vector of $\mathit{k}$ = (0, 0, 0.92). They align ferromagnetically in the $\mathit{ab}$ plane with the moment size of 6.75(6) $μ_{B}$, but rotate spirally by 165.6(1)° around the $\mathit{c}$ axis from layer to layer. The magnetic order parameter in the critical region close to the ordering temperature, $\mathit{T_{N}}$ = 15 K, shows critical behavior with a critical exponent of $β_{Eu}$ = 0.34(1), consistent with the three-dimensional Heisenberg model. Moreover, within the experimental uncertainty, our neutron data is consistent with a model in which the Ni sublattice is not magnetically ordered.

New Physics Scale from Higgs Observables with Effective Dimension-6 Operators

No matter what the scale of new physics is, deviations from the Standard Model for the Higgs observables will indicate the existence of such a scale. We consider effective six dimensional operators, and their effects on the Higgs productions and decays to estimate this new scale. We analyze and identify the parameter space consistent with known properties of the Higgs boson using recent Run II results from ATLAS and CMS experiments corresponding to $\sim$ 37 fb$^{-1}$ of data. We then calculate the $\bar{t} t h$ productions , as well as double Higgs production at the LHC using the effective couplings, and show that these can be much different than those predicted by the Standard Model, for a wide region of allowed parameters space. These predictions can be tested in the current or the future runs of the LHC. We find that the data are consistent with the existence of a new physics scale as low as 500 GeV for a significant region of parameter space of this six-dimensional couplings with these new physics effects at the LHC. We also find that for some region of the parameter space, di-Higgs production can be much larger than that predicted by the Standard Model giving rise to the prospect of its observation even in the current run II of the LHC.

Universal Extra Dimension models with gravity mediated decays after LHC Run II data

In the 'fat-brane' realization of Universal Extra Dimension (UED) models, the gravity mediated decays of Kaluza-Klein (KK) excitations of the Standard Model (SM) particles offer interesting collider signals. Colored level-1 KK-particles (quarks $q^1$ and/or gluons $g^{1}$) are pair-produced at the colliders due to conserved KK-parity. These particles, then, cascade decay into lighter level-1 KK-particle in association with one or more SM particles until producing lightest KK particle (LKP). The gravity mediation allows LKP to decay into photon or $Z$-boson plus gravity excitation, hence resulting in di-photon/$ZZ$/$Zγ$ plus missing transverse energy signatures at collider experiments. Alternatively, pair-produced level-1 KK quarks/gluons may directly decay into the corresponding SM quark/gluon and a gravity excitation resulting in di-jet plus missing transverse energy signal. The ATLAS Collaboration has recently communicated the results for di-photon and multi-jet plus missing transverse energy searches with $36.1$ inverse-femtobarn of integrated luminosity at $13$ TeV center-of-mass energy. No significant excess of events above the SM expectation was observed in both searches. We constrain the 'fat-brane' UED model parameters, namely the fundamental Planck mass $M_{D}$ and the size of small extra dimensions $R$, in the light of above-mentioned ATLAS searches.

Neutrino Mass Generation at TeV Scale and New Physics Signatures from Charged Higgs at the LHC for Photon Initiated Processes

We consider the collider phenomenology of a simple extension of the Standard Model (SM), which consists of an EW isospin $3/2$ scalar, $Δ$ and a pair of EW isospin $1$ vector like fermions, $Σ$ and $\barΣ$, responsible for generating tiny neutrino mass via the effective dimension seven operator. This scalar quadruplet with hypercharge Y = 3 has a plethora of implications at the collider experiments. Its signatures at TeV scale colliders are expected to be seen, if the quadruplet masses are not too far above the electroweak symmetry breaking scale. In this article, we study the phenomenology of multi-charged quadruplet scalars. In particular, we study the multi-lepton signatures at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiment, arising from the production and decays of triply and doubly charged scalars. We studied Drell-Yan (DY) pair production as well as pair production of the charged scalars via photon-photon fusion. For doubly and triply charged scalars, photon fusion contributes significantly for large scalar masses. We also studied LHC constraints on the masses of doubly charged scalars in this model. We derive a lower mass limit of 725 GeV on doubly charged quadruplet scalar.

Phenomenology of the Higgs sector of a Dimension-7 Neutrino Mass Generation Mechanism

In this paper, we revisit the dimension-7 neutrino mass generation mechanism based on the addition of an isospin $3/2$ scalar quadruplet and two vector-like iso-triplet leptons to the standard model. We discuss the LHC phenomenology of the charged scalars of this model, complemented by the electroweak precision and lepton flavor violation constraints. We pay particular attention to the triply charged and doubly charged components. We focus on the same-sign-tri-lepton signatures originating from the triply-charged scalars and find a discovery reach of 600 - 950 GeV at 3 ab$^{-1}$ of integrated luminosity at the LHC. On the other hand, doubly charged Higgs has been an object of collider searches for a long time, and we show how the present bounds on its mass depend on the particle spectrum of the theory. Strong constraint on the model parameter space can arise from the measured decay rate of the Standard Model Higgs to a pair of photons as well.

Photoionization in the time and frequency domain

Ultrafast processes in matter, such as the electron emission following light absorption, can now be studied using ultrashort light pulses of attosecond duration ($10^{-18}$s) in the extreme ultraviolet spectral range. The lack of spectral resolution due to the use of short light pulses may raise serious issues in the interpretation of the experimental results and the comparison with detailed theoretical calculations. Here, we determine photoionization time delays in neon atoms over a 40 eV energy range with an interferometric technique combining high temporal and spectral resolution. We spectrally disentangle direct ionization from ionization with shake up, where a second electron is left in an excited state, thus obtaining excellent agreement with theoretical calculations and thereby solving a puzzle raised by seven-year-old measurements. Our experimental approach does not have conceptual limits, allowing us to foresee, with the help of upcoming laser technology, ultra-high resolution time-frequency studies from the visible to the x-ray range.

New signals for vector-like down-type quark in $U(1)$ of $E_6$

We consider the pair production of vector-like down-type quarks in an $E_6$ motivated model, where each of the produced down-type vector-like quark decays into an ordinary Standard Model light quark and a singlet scalar. Both the vector-like quark and singlet scalar appear naturally in the $E_6$ model with masses at the TeV scale with a favorable choice of symmetry breaking pattern. We focus on the non-standard decay of the vector-like quark and the new scalar which decays to two photons or two gluons. We analyze the signal for the vector-like quark production in the $2γ+\geq2j$ channel and show how the scalar and vector-like quark masses can be determined at the Large Hadron Collider.

Neutrino Masses and Scalar Singlet Dark Matter

We propose a simple extension of the Standard Model (SM) which has a viable dark matter (DM) candidate, as well as can explain the generation of tiny neutrino masses. The DM is an electroweak (EW) singlet scalar $S$, odd under an imposed exact $Z_2$ symmetry, interacting to SM through `Higgs-portal' coupling, while all other particles are even under $Z_2$. The model also has an EW isospin $3/2$ scalar, $Δ$ and a pair of EW isospin vector, $Σ$ and $\barΣ$, responsible for generating tiny neutrino mass via the effective dimension seven operator. Thanks to the additional interactions with $Δ$, the scalar singlet DM $S$ survives a large region of parameter space by relic density constraints from WMAP/PLANCK and direct search bounds from updated LUX data. Constraints on the model from Large Hadron Collider (LHC) has also been discussed.

Hydrostatic pressure effects on the static magnetism in Eu(Fe$_{0.925}$Co$_{0.075}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$

The effects of hydrostatic pressure on the static magnetism in Eu(Fe$_{0.925}$Co$_{0.075}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ are investigated by complementary electrical resistivity, ac magnetic susceptibility and single-crystal neutron diffraction measurements. A specific pressure-temperature phase diagram of Eu(Fe$_{0.925}$Co$_{0.075}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is established. The structural phase transition, as well as the spin-density-wave order of Fe sublattice, is suppressed gradually with increasing pressure and disappears completely above 2.0 GPa. In contrast, the magnetic order of Eu sublattice persists over the whole investigated pressure range up to 14 GPa, yet displaying a non-monotonic variation with pressure. With the increase of the hydrostatic pressure, the magnetic state of Eu evolves from the canted antiferromagnetic structure in the ground state, via a pure ferromagnetic structure under the intermediate pressure, finally to a possible "novel" antiferromagnetic structure under the high pressure. The strong ferromagnetism of Eu coexists with the pressure-induced superconductivity around 2 GPa. The change of the magnetic state of Eu in Eu(Fe$_{0.925}$Co$_{0.075}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ upon the application of hydrostatic pressure probably arises from the modification of the indirect Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between the Eu$^{2+}$ moments tuned by external pressure.

The search for electroweak-scale right-handed neutrinos and mirror charged leptons through like-sign dilepton signals

The existence of tiny neutrino masses at a scale more than a million times smaller than the lightest charged fermion mass, namely the electron, and their mixings can not be explained within the framework of the exceptionally successful Standard Model. There are four ideas that has been proposed to explain the tiny neutrino masses. These include the see-saw mechanism with a right handed neutrino at the GUT scale, and this is the most elegant mechanism. The other mechanisms are radiatively generated neutrino masses, the neutrino mass arising from a 2nd Higgs doublet having a tiny VEV and coupling only to the neutrinos, and finally the mirror model or simply the EW-scale $ν_R$ model. The mirror model has new quarks and leptons of opposite chirality at the electroweak scale (for the same Standard Model gauge symmetry $SU(2)_W \times U(1)_Y$) compared to what we have for the Standard Model. With suitable modification of the Higgs sector, the EW-scale $ν_R$ model satisfies the electroweak precision test and also the constraints coming from the observed 125-GeV Higgs scalar. Since in this model, the mirror fermions are required to be in the EW scale, these can be produced at the LHC giving final states with a very low background from the SM. One such final state is the same sign dileptons with large missing $p_T$ for the events. In this work, we explore the constraint provided by the $8$ TeV data, and prospect of observing this signal in the $13$ TeV runs at the LHC. Additional signals will be the presence of displaced vertices depending on the smallness of the Yukawa couplings of the mirror leptons with the ordinary leptons and the singlet Higgs present in the model. Of particular importance to the EW-scale $ν_R$ model is the production of $ν_R$ which will be a direct test of the seesaw mechanism at collider energies.
