Tale of J1328+2752: a misaligned double-double radio galaxy hosted by a binary black-hole?

We present a radio and optical study of the double-double radio galaxy J1328+2752 based on new low-frequency GMRT observations and SDSS data. The radio data were used to investigate the morphology and to perform a spectral index analysis. In this source we find that the inner double is misaligned by $\sim$30$^\circ$ from the axis of the outer diffuse structure. The SDSS spectrum shows that the central component has double-peaked line profiles with different emission strengths. The average velocity off-set of the two components is 235$\pm$10.5 km s$^{-1}$. The misaligned radio morphology along with the double-peaked emission lines indicate that this source is a potential candidate binary supermassive black hole. This study further supports mergers as a possible explanation for repeated jet activity in radio sources.

Phase diagram of Eu magnetic ordering in Sn-flux-grown Eu(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ single crystals

The magnetic ground state of the Eu$^{2+}$ moments in a series of Eu(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ single crystals grown from the Sn flux has been investigated in detail by neutron diffraction measurements. Combined with the results from the macroscopic properties (resistivity, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat) measurements, a phase diagram describing how the Eu magnetic order evolves with Co doping in Eu(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ is established. The ground-state magnetic structure of the Eu$^{2+}$ spins is found to develop from the A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) order in the parent compound, via the A-type canted AFM structure with some net ferromagnetic (FM) moment component along the crystallographic $\mathit{c}$ direction at intermediate Co doping levels, finally to the pure FM order at relatively high Co doping levels. The ordering temperature of Eu declines linearly at first, reaches the minimum value of 16.5(2) K around $\mathit{x}$ = 0.100(4), and then reverses upwards with further Co doping. The doping-induced modification of the indirect Ruderman-Kittel-Kasuya-Yosida (RKKY) interaction between the Eu$^{2+}$ moments, which is mediated by the conduction $\mathit{d}$ electrons on the (Fe,Co)As layers, as well as the change of the strength of the direct interaction between the Eu$^{2+}$ and Fe$^{2+}$ moments, might be responsible for the change of the magnetic ground state and the ordering temperature of the Eu sublattice. In addition, for Eu(Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ single crystals with 0.10 $\leqslant$ $\mathit{x}$ $\leqslant$ 0.18, strong ferromagnetism from the Eu sublattice is well developed in the superconducting state, where a spontaneous vortex state is expected to account for the compromise between the two competing phenomena.

Neutrino Mass Generation and 750 GeV Diphoton excess via photon-photon fusion at the Large Hadron Collider

We propose a new model for explaining the diphoton excess observed at the LHC. The uniqueness of our model is that this excess is being produced by photon-photon induced sub-process. The model includes an isospin $3/2$ scalar multiplet (having triply, doubly and singly charged scalars) at the electroweak (EW) scale to explain the observed neutrino masses via the effective dimension $7$ operator. The model also include a singlet scalar which is the di-photon resonance. The loop induced coupling of the singlet scalar with a pair of photons is enhanced due to contributions from multi-charged EW-scale scalars (component of isospin $3/2$ multiplet) in the loop. We examine the production of the singlet scalar at the LHC via photon-photon fusion sub-process and its subsequent decay to di-photon. We found that a large part of parameter space of the present model can explain the observed excess of di-photon events at the LHC. We also study the other decay modes of the singlet scalar and the ensuing predictions can be tested in the upcoming runs at the LHC.

A new proposal for diphoton resonance from $E_6$ motivated extra $U(1)$

We propose that the diphoton resonance signal indicated by the recent LHC data might also arise from the pair productions of vector-like heavy down-type quarks with mass around $750$ GeV and above. The vector-like quark decays into an ordinary light quark and a Standard Model singlet scalar. The subsequent decay of scalar singlet produces the diphoton excess. Both the vector-like quark and singlet scalars appear naturally in the $E_6$, and their masses can be in the TeV scale with a suitable choice of symmetry breaking pattern. The prediction of such a proposal would be to see an accompanying dijet signal at the same mass with similar cross section in the $2γ+ 2j$ final state and two dijet resonances at the same mass for a $4j$ final state with a cross section, about 100 times larger. Both predictions can be tested easily as the luminosity accumulates in the upcoming runs of the LHC.

Spin-Wave and Electromagnon Dispersions in Multiferroic MnWO4 as Observed by Neutron Spectroscopy: Isotropic Heisenberg Exchange versus Anisotropic Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya Interaction

High resolution inelastic neutron scattering reveals that the elementary magnetic excitations in multiferroic MnWO4 consist of low energy dispersive electromagnons in addition to the well-known spin-wave excitations. The latter can well be modeled by a Heisenberg Hamiltonian with magnetic exchange coupling extending to the 12th nearest neighbor. They exhibit a spin-wave gap of 0.61(1) meV. Two electromagnon branches appear at lower energies of 0.07(1) meV and 0.45(1) meV at the zone center. They reflect the dynamic magnetoelectric coupling and persist in both, the collinear magnetic and paraelectric AF1 phase, and the spin spiral ferroelectric AF2 phase. These excitations are associated with the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange interaction, which is significant due to the rather large spin-orbit coupling.

Magnetic polarization of Ir in underdoped, non-superconducting Eu(Fe$_{0.94}$Ir$_{0.06}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$

Using polarized neutron diffraction and x-ray resonant magnetic scattering (XRMS) techniques, multiple phase transitions were revealed in an underdoped, non-superconducting Eu(Fe$_{1-x}$Ir$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($\mathit{x}$ = 0.06) single crystal. Compared with the parent compound EuFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$, the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural phase transition and the antiferromagnetic order of the Fe$^{2+}$ moments are significantly suppressed to $\mathit{T_{S}}$ = 111 (2) K and $\mathit{T_{N,Fe}}$= 85 (2) K by 6% Ir doping, respectively. In addition, the Eu$^{2+}$ spins order within the $\mathit{ab}$ plane in the A-type antiferromagnetic structure similar to the parent compound. However, the order temperature is evidently suppressed to $\mathit{T_{N,Eu}}$= 16.0 (5) K by Ir doping. Most strikingly, the XRMS measurements at the Ir $\mathit{L_{3}}$ edge demonstrates that the Ir 5$\mathit{d}$ states are also magnetically polarized, with the same propagation vector as the magnetic order of Fe. With $\mathit{T_{N,Ir}}$ = 12.0 (5) K, they feature a much lower onset temperature compared with $\mathit{T_{N,Fe}}$. Our observation suggests that the magnetism of the Eu sublattice has a considerable effect on the magnetic nature of the 5$\mathit{d}$ Ir dopant atoms and there exists a possible interplay between the localized Eu$^{2+}$ moments and the conduction $\mathit{d}$-electrons on the FeAs layers.

The search for mirror quarks at the LHC

Observation of non-zero neutrino masses at a scale $\sim 10^{-1} - 10^{-2}$ eV is a major problem in the otherwise highly successful Standard Model. The most elegant mechanism to explain such tiny neutrino masses is the seesaw mechanism with right handed neutrinos. However, the required seesaw scale is so high, $\sim 10^{14}$ GeV, it will not have any collider implications. Recently, an explicit model has been constructed to realize the seesaw mechanism with the right handed neutrinos at the electroweak scale. The model has a mirror symmetry having both the left and right lepton and quark doublets and singlets for the same $SU(2)_W $ gauge symmetry. Additional Higgs multiplets have been introduced to realize this scenario. It turns out that these extra Higgs fields also help to satisfy the precision electroweak tests, and other observables. Because the scale of the symmetry breaking is electroweak, both the mirror quark and mirror leptons have masses in the electroweak scale in the range $ \sim 150 - 800 $ GeV. The mirror quarks / leptons decay to ordinary quarks /leptons plus very light neutral scalars. In this work, we calculate the final state signals arising from the pair productions of these mirror quarks and their subsequent decays. We find that these signals are well observable over the Standard Model background for $13$ TeV LHC. Depending on the associated Yukawa couplings, these decays can also give rise displaced vertices with long decay length, very different from the usual displaced vertices associated with b decays.

The Diboson Excesses in an Anomaly Free Leptophobic Left-Right Model

The resonant excesses around 2 TeV reported by the ATLAS Collaboration can be explained in the left-right model, and the tight constraints from lepton plus missing energy searches can be evaded if the $SU(2)_R$ gauge symmetry is leptophobic. We for the first time propose an anomaly free leptophobic left-right model with gauge symmetry $SU(3)_C \times SU(2)_L \times SU(2)_R \times U(1)_{X}$ where the SM leptons are singlets under $SU(2)_R$. The gauge anomalies are cancelled by introducing extra vector-like quarks. The mass of $Z^\prime$ gauge boson, which cannot be leptophobic, is assumed to be around or above 2.5 TeV so that the constraint on dilepton final state can be avoided. Moreover, we find that the $W^\prime \to WZ$ channel cannot explain the ATLAS diboson excess due to the tension with the constraint on $W^\prime \to jj$ decay mode. We solve this problem by considering the mixings between the SM quarks and vector-like quarks. We show explicitly that the ATLAS diboson excess can be explained in the viable parameter space of our model, which is consistent with all the current experimental constraints.

Superworld without Supersymmetry

It is a possibility that the superworld (supersymmetric partners of our world) does exist without supersymmetry. The two worlds are being distinguished by an unbroken discrete $Z_2$ symmetry (similar to R-parity in supersymmetry). We lose the solution to the hierarchy problem. However, such a scenario has several motivations. For example, the lightest neutral superworld particle will be a candidate for dark matter. The other being, as in supersymmetry, it is possible to achieve gauge coupling unification. One major difference with the supersymmetric theory is that such a theory is much more general since it is not constrained by supersymmetry. For example, some of the gauge couplings connecting the Standard Model particles with the superpartners now become free Yukawa couplings. As a result, the final state signals as well as the limits on the superworld particles can be modified both qualitatively and quantitatively. The reach for these superworld particles at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) can be much higher than the superpartners, leading to the increased possibility of discovering new physics at the LHC.

A model for Dirac neutrino mass matrix with only four parameters

The exchange symmetry between the muon neutrino and the tau neutrino for the neutrino mass matrix has been very useful in understanding the near maximal atmospheric neutrino mixing angle. However, this symmetry can not be imposed at the Lagrangian level, since the charged lepton partners, muon and tau do not satisfy this symmetry. We extend the Standard model to include three right handed singlet neutrinos, and impose the most general symmetry between $ν_{μR} $ and $ν_{τR}$ sectors followed by a CP transformation of the leptonic sector at the Lagrangian level. This symmetry does not affect the charged leptons. With the additional assumption of the hermiticity of the ensuing Dirac neutrino mass matrix, we get a 4 parameter neutrino mass matrix in good agreement with the available neutrino data for the inverted neutrino mass hierarchy. The model also predicts the values of the three neutrino masses, and the leptonic CP violating phase which can be tested in the upcoming neutrino experiments.

Magnetic ground state of superconducting Eu(Fe0.88Ir0.12)2As2: A combined neutron diffraction and first-principles calculation study

The magnetic order of the localized Eu$^{2+}$ spins in optimally-doped Eu(Fe$_{1-x}$Ir$_{x}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ ($\mathit{x}$ = 0.12) with superconducting transition temperature $\mathit{T_{SC}}$ = 22 K was investigated by single-crystal neutron diffraction. The Eu$^{2+}$ moments were found to be ferromagnetically aligned along the $\mathit{c}$-direction with an ordered moment of 7.0(1) $μ_{B}$ well below the magnetic phase transition temperature $\mathit{T_{C}}$ = 17 K. No evidence of the tetragonal-to-orthorhombic structural phase transition was found in this compound within the experimental uncertainty, in which the spin-density-wave (SDW) order of the Fe sublattice is supposed to be completely suppressed and the superconductivity gets fully developed. The ferromagnetic groud state of the Eu$^{2+}$ spins in Eu(Fe$_{0.88}$Ir$_{0.12}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ was supported by the first-principles density functional calculation. In addition, comparison of the electronic structure calculations between Eu(Fe$_{0.875}$Ir$_{0.125}$)$_{2}$As$_{2}$ and the parent compound EuFe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ indicates stronger hybridization and more expanded bandwith due to the Ir substitution, which together with the introduction of electrons might work against the Fe-SDW in favor of the superconductivity.

Magnetic and structural transitions in La$_{0.4}$Na$_{0.6}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals

La$_{0.4}$Na$_{0.6}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals have been grown out of an NaAs flux in an alumina crucible and characterized by measuring magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, specific heat, as well as single crystal x-ray and neutron diffraction. La$_{0.4}$Na$_{0.6}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ single crystals show a structural phase transition from a high temperature tetragonal phase to a low-temperature orthorhombic phase at T$_s$\,=\,125\,K. This structural transition is accompanied by an anomaly in the temperature dependence of electrical resistivity, anisotropic magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat. Concomitant with the structural phase transition, the Fe moments order along the \emph{a} direction with an ordered moment of 0.7(1)\,$μ_{\textup{B}}$ at \emph{T}\,=\,5 K. The low temperature stripe antiferromagnetic structure is the same as that in other \emph{A}Fe$_{2}$As$_{2}$ (\emph{A}\,=\,Ca, Sr, Ba) compounds. La$_{0.5-x}$Na$_{0.5+x}$Fe$_2$As$_2$ provides a new material platform for the study of iron-based superconductors where the electron-hole asymmetry could be studied by simply varying La/Na ratio.

Dark Matter, Parallel Universe and Multiple Higgs Signals at the ILC

The existence of dark matter is now well established by several indirect experiments. Several candidates for dark matter has also been proposed. However, the dark matter can just be like our ordinary matter in a parallel Universe with both Universes being described by their own non-abelian gauge symmetries forbidding any kinetic mixing. However, the quartic Higgs interactions involving Higgs fields between the two Universes are allowed by the symmetries of the model. The ensuing mixing between the two lightest Standard Model like Higgses gives rise to interesting signatures at the proposed international electron-positron collider (ILC) specially in the case when mass splitting between the two surviving light Higgs bosons are small ($\sim$ 100 MeV) so that they can not be resolved at the LHC.

Magnetic structure of the Eu2+ moments in superconducting EuFe2(As1-xPx)2 with x = 0.19

The magnetic structure of the Eu2+ moments in the superconducting EuFe2(As1-xPx)2 sample with x = 0.19 has been determined using neutron scattering. We conclude that the Eu2+ moments are aligned along the c direction below T_C = 19.0(1) K with an ordered moment of 6.6(2) mu_B in the superconducting state. An impurity phase similar to the underdoped phase exists within the bulk sample which orders antiferromagnetically below T_N = 17.0(2) K. We found no indication of iron magnetic order, nor any incommensurate magnetic order of the Eu2+ moments in the sample.

Discovery of a red quasar with recurrent activity

We report a new double-double radio quasar, DDRQ, J0746$+$4526 which exhibits two cycles of episodic activity. From radio continuum observations at 607 MHz using the GMRT and 1400 MHz from the FIRST survey we confirm its episodic nature. We examine the SDSS optical spectrum and estimate the black hole mass to be (8.2$\pm$0.3)$\times$10$^7$M$_\odot$ from its observed MgII emission line, and the Eddington ratio to be 0.03. The black hole mass is significantly smaller than for the other reported DDRQ, J0935+0204, while the Eddington ratios are comparable. The SDSS spectrum is significantly red continuum dominated suggesting that it is highly obscured with ${E(B-V)}_{host}=0.70\pm0.16$ mag. This high obscuration further indicates the existence of a large quantity of dust and gas along the line of sight, which may have a key role in triggering the recurrent jet activity in such objects.

A predictive model of Dirac Neutrinos

Assuming lepton number conservation, hermiticity of the neutrino mass matrix and $ν_μ - ν_τ$ exchange symmetry, we show that we can determine the neutrino mass matrix completely from the existing data. Comparing with the existing data, our model predicts an inverted mass hierarchy (close to a degenerate pattern) with the three neutrino mass values, $8.91 \times 10^{-2}$ eV, $8.95 \times 10^{-2}$ eV, $7.50 \times 10^ {-2}$ eV, a large value for the CP violating phase, $δ= 110^0$, and of course, the absence of neutrinoless $ββ$ decay. All of these predictions can be tested in the forthcoming or future precision neutrino experiments.

Constraining Bosonic Supersymmetry from Higgs results and 8 TeV ATLAS multi-jets plus missing energy data

The collider phenomenology of models with Universal Extra Dimensions (UED) is surprisingly similar to that of supersymmetric (SUSY) scenarios. For each level-1 bosonic (fermionic) Kaluza-Klein (KK) state, there is a fermionic (bosonic) analog in SUSY and thus UED scenarios are often known as bosonic supersymmetry. The minimal version of UED (mUED) gives rise to a quasi-degenerate particle spectrum at each KK-level and thus, can not explain the enhanced Higgs to diphoton decay rate hinted by the ATLAS collaboration of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) experiment. However, in the non-minimal version of the UED (nmUED) model, the enhanced Higgs to diphoton decay rate can be easily explained via the suitable choice of boundary localized kinetic (BLK) terms for higher dimensional fermions and gauge bosons. BLK terms remove the degeneracy in the KK mass spectrum and thus, pair production of level-1 quarks and gluons at the LHC gives rise to hard jets, leptons and large missing energy in the final state. These final states are studied in details by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations in the context of SUSY scenarios. We find that the absence of any significant deviation of the data from the Standard Model (SM) prediction puts a lower bound of about 2.1 TeV on equal mass excited quarks and gluons.

Coexistence of Superconductivity and Ferromagnetism in P-doped EuFe2As2

The magnetic structure of the Eu2+ moments in the superconducting EuFe2(As1-xPx)2 sample with x = 0.15 has been determined using element specific x-ray resonant magnetic scattering. Combining magnetic, thermodynamic and scattering measurements, we conclude that the long range ferromagnetic order of the Eu2+ moments aligned primarily along the c axis coexists with the bulk superconductivity at zero field. At an applied magnetic field >= 0.6 T, superconductivity still coexists with the ferromagnetic Eu2+ moments which are polarized along the field direction. We propose a spontaneous vortex state for the coexistence of superconductivity and ferromagnetism in EuFe2(As0.85P0.15)2.
