Low-lying excitations of the three-leg spin tube using the density-matrix renormalization group method

Using the (dynamical) density-matrix renormalization group method, we study the low-energy physics of three-leg antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model where the periodic boundary conditions are applied in the rung direction. We confirm that the spin excitations are always gapped as long as the intra-ring couplings form a regular triangle. From precise finite-size-scaling analyses of the spin gap and dimerization order parameter, we also find that the spin gap is collapsed by very small asymmetric modulation of the intra-ring couplings. Moreover, the dynamical spin structure factors on the intra- and inter-leg correlations are calculated. It is demonstrated that the low-lying structure of the inter-leg spectra is particularly affected by the asymmetric modulation.

Current-current correlations in the three-band model for two-leg CuO ladders

We study current-current correlations in the three-band Hubbard model for two-leg CuO ladders using the density-matrix renormalization group method. We find that these correlations decrease exponentially with distance for low doping but as a power law for higher doping. Their pattern is compatible with the circulating current (CC) phase which Varma has proposed to explain the pseudo-gaped metallic phase in underdoped high-temperature superconductors. However, for model parameters leading to a realistic ground state in the undoped ladder, the current fluctuations decay faster than the d-wave-like pairing correlations in the doped state. Thus we conclude that no phase with CC order or dominant CC fluctuations occur in the three-band model of two-leg CuO ladders.

Superconductivity in a model of two Hubbard chains coupled with ferromagnetic exchange interaction

We study the ground-state properties of the double-chain Hubbard model coupled with ferromagnetic exchange interaction by using the weak-coupling theory, density-matrix renormalization group technique, and Lanczos exact-diagonalization method. We determine the ground-state phase diagram in the parameter space of the ferromagnetic exchange interaction and band filling. We find that, in high electron density regime, the spin gap opens and the spin-singlet $d_{xy}$-wave-like pairing correlation is most dominant, whereas in low electron density regime, the fully-polarized ferromagnetic state is stabilized where the spin-triplet $p_{y}$-wave-like pairing correlation is most dominant.

Coexistence of distinct charge fluctuations in $θ$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$X

Using the Lanczos exact-diagonalization and density-matrix renormalization group methods, we study the extended Hubbard model at quarter filling defined on the anisotropic triangular lattice. We focus on charge ordering (CO) phenomena induced by onsite and intersite Coulomb interactions. We determine the ground-state phase diagram including three CO phases, i.e., diagonal, vertical, and three-fold CO phases, based on the calculated results of the hole density and double occupancy. We also calculate the dynamical density-density correlation functions and find possible coexistence of the diagonal and three-fold charge fluctuations in a certain parameter region where the onsite and intersite interactions compete. Furthermore, the characteristic features of the optical conductivity for each CO phase are discussed.

Dynamics in One-Dimensional Spin Systems - Density-Matrix Renormalization Group Study

We study the one-dimensional $S=1/2$ Heisenberg model with a uniform and a staggered magnetic fields, using the dynamical density-matrix renormalization group (DDMRG) technique. The DDMRG enables us to investigate the dynamical properties of chain with lengths up to a few hundreds, and the results are numerically exact in the same sense as 'exact diagonalization' results are. Thus, we can analyze the low-energy spectrum almost in the thermodynamic limit. In this work, we calculate the dynamical spin structure factor and demonstrate the performance of the DDMRG method applying the open-end boundary condition as well as the periodic boundary condition.

Phase diagram of the one-dimensional Hubbard model with next-nearest-neighbor hopping

We study the one-dimensional Hubbard model with nearest-neighbor and next-nearest-neighbor hopping integrals by using the density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method and Hartree-Fock approximation. Based on the calculated results for the spin gap, total-spin quantum number, and Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid parameter, we determine the ground-state phase diagram of the model in the entire filling and wide parameter region. We show that, in contrast to the weak-coupling regime where a spin-gapped liquid phase is predicted in the region with four Fermi points, the spin gap vanishes in a substantial region in the strong-coupling regime. It is remarkable that a large variety of phases, such as the paramagnetic metallic phase, spin-gapped liquid phase, singlet and triplet superconducting phases, and fully polarized ferromagnetic phase, appear in such a simple model in the strong-coupling regime.

Magnetic impurity in correlated electrons system

We study a magnetic impurity embedded in a correlated electron system using the density-matrix renormalization group method. The correlated electron system is described by the one-dimensional Hubbard model. At half filling, we confirm that the binding energy of the singlet bound state increases exponentially in the weak-coupling regime and decreases inversely proportional to the correlation in the strong-coupling regime. The spin-spin correlation shows an exponential decay with distance from the impurity site. The correlation length becomes smaller with increasing the correlation strength. We find discontinuous reduction of the binding energy and of spin-spin correlations with hole doping. The binding energy is reduced by hole doping; however, it remains of the same order of magnitude as for the half-filled case.

Charge and spin excitation spectra in the one-dimensional Hubbard model with next-nearest-neighbor hopping

The dynamical density-matrix renormalization group technique is used to calculate spin and charge excitation spectra in the one-dimensional (1D) Hubbard model at quarter filling with nearest-neighbor $t$ and next-nearest-neighbor $t'$ hopping integrals. We consider a case where $t$ ($>0$) is much smaller than $t'$ ($>0$). We find that the spin and charge excitation spectra come from the two nearly independent $t'$-chains and are basically the same as those of the 1D Hubbard (and t-J) chain at quarter filling. However, we find that the hopping integral $t$ plays a crucial role in the short-range spin and charge correlations; i.e., the ferromagnetic spin correlations between electrons on the neighboring sites is enhanced and simultaneously the spin-triplet pairing correlations is induced, of which the consequences are clearly seen in the calculated spin and charge excitation spectra at low energies.

Renormalization of the quasiparticle hopping integrals by spin interactions in layered copper oxides

Holes doped within the square CuO2 network specific to the cuprate superconducting materials have oxygen 2p character. We investigate the basic properties of such oxygen holes by wavefunction-based quantum chemical calculations on large embedded clusters. We find that a 2p hole induces ferromagnetic correlations among the nearest-neighbor Cu 3d spins. When moving through the antiferromagnetic background the hole must bring along this spin polarization cloud at nearby Cu sites, which gives rise to a substantial reduction of the effective hopping parameters. Such interactions can explain the relatively low values inferred for the effective hoppings by fitting the angle-resolved photoemission data. The effect of the background antiferromagnetic couplings of renormalizing the effective nearest-neighbor hopping is also confirmed by density-matrix renormalization-group model Hamiltonian calculations for chains and ladders of CuO4 plaquettes.

Nonlocal interactions in doped cuprates: correlated motion of Zhang-Rice polarons

In-plane, inter-carrier correlations in hole doped cuprates are investigated by ab initio multiconfiguration calculations. The dressed carriers display features that are reminiscent of both Zhang-Rice (ZR) CuO4 singlet states and Jahn-Teller polarons. The interaction between these quasiparticles is repulsive. At doping levels that are high enough, the interplay between long-range unscreened Coulomb interactions and long-range phase coherence among the O-ion half-breathing vibrations on the ZR plaquettes may lead to a strong reduction of the effective adiabatic energy barrier associated to each polaronic state. Tunneling effects cannot be neglected for a relatively flat, multi-well energy landscape. We suggest that the coherent, superconducting quantum state is the result of such coherent quantum lattice fluctuations involving the in-plane O ions. Our findings appear to support models where the superconductivity is related to a lowering of the in-plane kinetic energy.

Electron correlations and bond-length fluctuations in layered copper oxides: electron versus hole doping

We investigate the nature of the electronic ground state and electron-lattice couplings for doped chains of CuO_4 plaquettes or CuO_6 octahedra. The undoped configuration implies here Cu 3d^9 and O 2p^6 formal valence states. The results of multiconfiguration calculations on 4-plaquette (or 4-octahedra) linear clusters indicate strong electron-lattice interactions and polaronic behavior of the doped particles, for both electron and hole doping. For certain phases of the oxygen-ion half-breathing distortions a multi-well energy landscape is predicted. Since each well is associated to carriers localized at different sites, the half-breathing displacements induce charge transfer along the chain. In the case of hole-doping, the trends found by ab initio multiconfiguration calculations on 4-octahedra clusters are confirmed by density-matrix renormalization-group calculations for a p-d, extended Hubbard model with chains of few tens of CuO_4 plaquettes. Under the assumption of charge separation and the formation of 1/3-doped stripes, our results seem to support the vibronic mechanism and the traveling charge-density wave scenario proposed in some recent contributions for superconductivity in copper oxides.

Electron correlations and bond-length fluctuations in copper oxides: from Zhang--Rice singlets to correlation bags

We perform first principles, multiconfiguration calculations on clusters including several CuO$_6$ octahedra and study the ground-state electron distribution and electron--lattice couplings when holes are added to the undoped $d^9 p^6$ configuration. We find that the so-called Zhang--Rice state on a single CuO$_4$ plaquette is nearly degenerate with a state whose leading configuration is of the form Cu $d^9$-- O $p^5$-- Cu $d^9$. A strong coupling between the electronic and nuclear motion gives rise to large inter-site charge transfer effects for half-breathing displacements of the oxygen ions. Under the assumption of charge segregation into alternating hole-free and hole-rich stripes of Goodenough \cite{jbg_02,jbg_03}, our results seem to support the vibronic mechanism and the traveling charge-density wave model from Refs.\cite{jbg_02,jbg_03} for the superconductivity in copper oxides.

Ring Exchange Mechanism for Triplet Superconductivity in a Two-Chain Hubbard Model: Possible Relevance to Bechgaard Salts

The density-matrix renormalization group method is used to study the ground state of the two-chain zigzag-bond Hubbard model at quarter filling. We show that, with a proper choice of the signs of hopping integrals, the ring exchange mechanism yields ferromagnetic spin correlations between interchain neighboring sites, and produces the attractive interaction between electrons as well as the long-range pair correlations in the spin-triplet channel, thereby leading the system to triplet superconductivity. We argue that this novel mechanism may have possible relevance to observed superconductivity in Bechgaard salts.

Near degeneracy and pseudo Jahn-Teller effects in mixed-valence ladders: the phase transition in NaV$_2$O$_5$

We analyze the electronic structure of a mixed-valence ladder system. We find that structural anisotropy and complex electron correlations lead to on-rung charge localization and insulating character. Charge fluctuations within the rung of the ladder interact strongly to the lattice degrees of freedom, which gives rise to large pseudo Jahn--Teller effects. The phase transition in NaV$_2$O$_5$ should be driven by this kind of mechanism.

Differences Between Hole and Electron Doping of a Two-Leg CuO Ladder

Here we report results of a density-matrix-renormalization-group (DMRG) calculation of the charge, spin, and pairing properties of a two-leg CuO Hubbard ladder. The outer oxygen atoms as well as the rung and leg oxygen atoms are included along with near-neighbor and oxygen-hopping matrix elements. This system allows us to study the effects of hole and electron doping on a system which is a charge transfer insulator at a filling of one hole per Cu and exhibits power law, d-wave-like pairing correlations when doped. In particular, we focus on the differences between doping with holes or electrons.

Charge Ordering in the One-Dimensional Extended Hubbard Model: Implication to the TMTTF Family of Organic Conductors

We study the charge ordering (CO) in the one-dimensional (1D) extended Hubbard model at quarter filling where the nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion and dimerization in the hopping parameters are included. Using the cluster mean-field approximation to take into account the effect of quantum fluctuations, we determine the CO phase boundary of the model in the parameter space at T=0 K. We thus find that the dimerization suppresses the stability of the CO phase strongly, and in consequence, the realistic parameter values for quasi-1D organic materials such as (TMTTF)$_2$PF$_6$ are outside the region of CO. We suggest that the long-range Coulomb interaction between the chains should persist to stabilize the CO phase.

Optical Conductivity of the Trellis-Lattice t-J Model: Charge Fluctuations in NaV_2O_5

Optical conductivity of the trellis lattice t-J model at quarter filling is calculated by an exact-diagonalization technique on small clusters, whereby the valence state of V ions of NaV_2O_5 is considered. We show that the experimental features at \sim 1 eV, including peak positions, presence of shoulders, and anisotropic spectral weight, can be reproduced in reasonable range of parameter values, only by assuming that the system is in the charge disproportionated ground state. Possible reconciliation with experimental data suggesting the presence of uniform ladders at T>T_c is discussed.

A Model Study of the Low-Energy Charge Dynamics of NaV_2O_5

An exact-diagonalization technique on small clusters is used to calculate the dynamical density correlation functions of the dimerized t-J chain and coupled anisotropic t-J ladders (trellis lattice) at quarter filling, i.e., the systems regarded as a network of pairs (dimers or rungs) of sites coupled weakly via the hopping and exchange interactions. We thereby demonstrate that the intersite Coulomb repulsions between the pairs induce a low-energy collective mode in the charge excitations of the systems where the internal charge degrees of freedom of the pairs play an essential role. Implications to the electronic states of NaV_2O_5, i.e., fluctuations of the valence state of V ions and phase transition as a charge ordering, are discussed.
