NaV_2O_5 as an Anisotropic t-J Ladder at Quarter Filling

Based on recent experimental evidences that the electronic charge degrees of freedom plays an essential role in the spin-Peierls--like phase transition of NaV$_2$O$_5$, we first make the mapping of low-energy electronic states of the $d$$-$$p$ model for NaV$_2$O$_5$ to the quarter-filled $t$$-$$J$ ladder with anisotropic parameter values between legs and rungs, and then show that this anisotropic $t$$-$$J$ ladder is in the Mott insulating state, of which lowest-energy states can be modeled by the one-dimensional Heisenberg antiferromagnet with the effective exchange interaction $J_{eff}$ whose value is consistent with experimental estimates. We furthermore examine the coupling between the ladders as the trellis lattice model and show that the nearest-neighbor Coulomb repulsion on the zigzag-chain bonds can lead to the instability in the charge degrees of freedom of the ladders.

Critical Dimerization Strength of the Quarter-Filled t-J Model

An exact-diagonalization technique on small clusters is used to study the ground state of the dimerized t-J model at quarter filling. The equal-time charge and spin correlations, charge and spin gaps, and binding energy are calculated for the two-dimensional lattice with a spatial dimerization pattern corresponding to organic conductors $κ-(BEDT-TTF)_2X$. We show that competition between the effects of two types of dimerization, i.e., dimerization in the hopping integral and dimerization in the exchange interaction, leads to the insulator-superconductor transition in the ground state of the model. The phase diagram is thereby presented.

Ground-state phase diagram of the one-dimensional dimerized t-J model at quarter filling

The ground state of the one-dimensional dimerized $t$$-$$J$ model at quarter filling is studied by a Lanczos exact-diagonalization technique on small clusters. We calculate the charge gap, spin gap, binding energy, Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid parameter, Drude weight, anomalous flux quantization, etc. We thereby show that the two types of dimerization, i.e., a dimerization of hopping integral and a dimerization of exchange interaction play a mutually competing role in controlling the ground state of the system and this leads to the emergence of various phases including the Mott insulating, Tomonaga-Luttinger-liquid, and Luther-Emery-liquid phases. The ground-state phase diagram of the model is given on the parameter space of the dimerizations.

Landau mapping and Fermi liquid parameters of the 2D t-J model

We study the momentum distribution function n(k) in the 2D t-J model on small clusters by exact diagonalization. We show that n(k) can be decomposed systematically into two components with Bosonic and Fermionic doping dependence. The Bosonic component originates from the incoherent motion of holes and has no significance for the low energy physics. For the Fermionic component we exlicitely perform the one-to-one Landau mapping between the low lying eigenstates of the t-J model clusters and those of an equivalent system of spin-1/2 quasiparticles. This mapping allows to extract the quasiparticle dispersion, statistics, and Landau parameters. The results show conclusively that the 2D t-J model for small doping is a Fermi liquid with a `small' Fermi surface and a moderately strong attractive interaction between the quasiparticles.
