The relativistic 5f electronic structure of delocalized $\alpha$-U and localized $\delta$-Pu from the self consistent vertex corrected GW approach and X-ray Emission Spectroscopy

The recently developed self-consistent vertex corrected GW method is used to calculate the 5f electronic structure in delocalized $\alpha$-U and localized $\delta$-Pu, each of which is confirmed by the historical experimental approaches of direct and inverse photoemission. Tender X-Ray Emission Spectroscopy (XES), in a novel application to 5f electronic structure, is used to experimentally prove the existence of 5f delocalization in $\alpha$-U.

Hardware Demonstrator of a Compact First-Level Muon Track Trigger for Future Hadron Collider Experiments

Single muon triggers are crucial for the physics programmes at hadron collider experiments. To be sensitive to electroweak processes, single muon triggers with transverse momentum thresholds down to 20 GeV and dimuon triggers with even lower thresholds are required. In order to keep the rates of these triggers at an acceptable level these triggers have to be highly selective, i.e. they must have small accidental trigger rates and sharp trigger turn-on curves. The muon systems of the LHC experiments and experiments at future colliders like FCC-hh will use two muon chamber systems for the muon trigger, fast trigger chambers like RPCs with coarse spatial resolution and much slower precision chambers like drift-tube chambers with high spatial resolution. The data of the trigger chambers are used to identify the bunch crossing in which the muon was created and for a rough momentum measurement while the precise measurements of the muon trajectory by the precision chambers are ideal for an accurate muon momentum measurement. A compact muon track finding algorithm is presented, where muon track candidates are reconstructed using a binning algorithm based on a 1D Hough Transform. The algorithm has been designed and implemented on a System-On-Chip device. A hardware demonstration using Xilinx Evaluation boards ZC706 has been set-up to prove the concept. The system has demonstrated the feasibility to reconstruct muon tracks with a good angular resolution, whilst satisfying latency constraints. The demonstrated track-reconstruction system, the chosen architecture, the achievements to date and future options for such a system will be discussed.

Development of a Highly Selective First-Level Muon Trigger for ATLAS at HL-LHC Exploiting Precision Muon Drift-Tube Data

The High-Luminosity LHC (HL-LHC) will provide the unique opportunity to explore the nature of physics beyond the Standard Model of strong and electroweak interactions. Highly selective first-level triggers are essential for the physics programme of the ATLAS experiment at HL-LHC, where the instantaneous luminosity will exceed the instantaneous LHC Run 1 luminosity by about an order of magnitude. The ATLAS first-level muon trigger rate is dominated by low momentum muons, which are accepted because of the moderate momentum resolution of the RPC and TGC trigger chambers. This limitation can be overcome by exploiting the data of the precision Muon Drift-Tube (MDT) chambers in the first-level trigger decision. This requires continuous fast transfer of the MDT hits to the off-detector trigger logic and fast track reconstruction algorithms. The reduction of the muon trigger rate achievable with the proposed new trigger concept, the performance of a novel fast track reconstruction algorithm, and the first hardware demonstration of the scheme with muon testbeam data taken at the CERN Gamma Irradiation Facility are discussed.

A Highly Selective First-Level Muon Trigger With MDT Chamber Data for ATLAS at HL-LHC

Highly selective triggers are essential for the physics programme of the ATLAS experiment at HL-LHC where the instantaneous luminosity will be about an order of magnitude larger than the LHC instantaneous luminosity in Run 1. The first level muon trigger rate is dominated by low momentum muons below the nominal trigger threshold due to the moderate momentum resolution of the Resistive Plate and Thin Gap trigger chambers. The resulting high trigger rates at HL-LHC can be sufficiently reduced by using the data of the precision Muon Drift Tube chambers for the trigger decision. This requires the implementation of a fast MDT read-out chain and of a fast MDT track reconstruction algorithm with a latency of at most 6 microseconds. A hardware demonstrator of the fast read-out chain has been successfully tested at the HL-LHC operating conditions at the CERN Gamma Irradiation Facility. The fast track reconstruction algorithm has been implemented on a fast trigger processor.

Construction and Test of New Precision Drift-Tube Chambers for Upgrades of the ATLAS Muon Spectrometer in 2016/17

Small-diameter Muon Drift Tube (sMDT) chambers have been developed for the ATLAS muon detector upgrade. They possess an improved rate capability and a more compact design with respect to the existing chambers, which allows to equip detector regions uninstrument at present. The chamber assembly methods have been optimized for mass production, while the sense wire positioning accuracy is improved to below ten microns. The chambers will be ready for installation in the winter shutdown 2016/17 of the Large Hadron Collider. The design and construction of the new sMDT chambers for ATLAS will be discussed as well as measurements of their precision and performance.

X-ray Flare Spectra from the DIOGENESS Spectrometer and its concept applied to ChemiX on the Interhelioprobe spacecraft

The {\em DIOGENESS} X-ray crystal spectrometer on the {\em CORONAS-F} spacecraft operated for a single month (25~August to 17~September) in 2001 but in its short lifetime obtained one hundred and forty high-resolution spectra from some eight solar flares with {\em GOES} importance ranging from C9 to X5. The instrument included four scanning flat crystals with wavelength ranges covering the regions of \sixiii\ (6.65~Å), \sxv\ (5.04~Å), and \caxix\ (3.18~Å) X-ray lines and associated dielectronic satellites. Two crystals covering the \caxix\ lines were oriented in a ``Dopplerometer'' manner, i.e. such that spatial and spectral displacements both of which commonly occur in flares can be separated. We describe the {\em DIOGENESS} spectrometer and the spectra obtained during flares which include lines not hitherto seen from spacecraft instruments. An instrument with very similar concept is presently being built for the two Russian {\em Interhelioprobe} spacecraft due for launch in 2020 and 2022 that will make a near-encounter (perihelion $\sim 0.3$ a.u.) to the Sun in its orbit. We outline the results that are likely to be obtained.

Models of dynamic extraction of lipid tethers from cell membranes

When a ligand that is bound to an integral membrane receptor is pulled, the membrane and the underlying cytoskeleton can deform before either the membrane delaminates from the cytoskeleton or the ligand detaches from the receptor. If the membrane delaminates from the cytoskeleton, it may be further extruded and form a membrane tether. We develop a phenomenological model for this processes by assuming that deformations obey Hooke's law up to a critical force at which the cell membrane locally detaches from the cytoskeleton and a membrane tether forms. We compute the probability of tether formation and show that they can be extruded only within an intermediate range of force loading rates and pulling velocities. The mean tether length that arises at the moment of ligand detachment is computed as are the force loading rates and pulling velocities that yield the longest tethers.

Field theory on $κ$--Minkowski space revisited: Noether charges and breaking of Lorentz symmetry

This paper is devoted to detailed investigations of free scalar field theory on $κ$-Minkowski space. After reviewing necessary mathematical tools we discuss in depth the Lagrangian and solutions of field equations. We analyze the spacetime symmetries of the model and construct the conserved charges associated with translational and Lorentz symmetry. We show that the version of the theory usually studied breaks Lorentz invariance in a subtle way: There is an additional trans-Planckian mode present, and an associated conserved charge (the number of such modes) is not a Lorentz scalar.

Scalar field theory on $κ$-Minkowski space-time and Doubly Special Relativity

In this paper we recall the construction of scalar field action on $κ$-Minkowski space-time and investigate its properties. In particular we show how the co-product of $κ$-Poincaré algebra of symmetries arises from the analysis of the symmetries of the action, expressed in terms of Fourier transformed fields. We also derive the action on commuting space-time, equivalent to the original one. Adding the self-interaction $Φ^4$ term we investigate the modified conservation laws. We show that the local interactions on $κ$-Minkowski space-time give rise to 6 inequivalent ways in which energy and momentum can be conserved at four-point vertex. We discuss the relevance of these results for Doubly Special Relativity.

Quantum $κ$-Poincaré Algebra from de Sitter Space of Momenta

There is a growing number of physical models, like point particle(s) in 2+1 gravity or Doubly Special Relativity, in which the space of momenta is curved, de Sitter space. We show that for such models the algebra of space-time symmetries possesses a natural Hopf algebra structure. It turns out that this algebra is just the quantum $κ$-Poincaré algebra.

Phase spaces of Doubly Special Relativity

We show that depending on the direction of deformation of $κ$-Poincaré algebra (time-like, space-like, or light-like) the associated phase spaces of single particle in Doubly Special Relativity theories have the energy-momentum spaces of the form of de Sitter, anti-de Sitter, and flat space, respectively.

Doubly Special Relativity theories as different bases of $κ$--Poincaré algebra

Doubly Special Relativity (DSR) theory is a theory with two observer-independent scales, of velocity and mass (or length). Such a theory has been proposed by Amelino--Camelia as a kinematic structure which may underline quantum theory of relativity. Recently another theory of this kind has been proposed by Magueijo and Smolin. In this paper we show that both these theories can be understood as particular bases of the $κ$--Poincaré theory based on quantum (Hopf) algebra. This observation makes it possible to construct the space-time sector of Magueijo and Smolin DSR. We also show how this construction can be extended to the whole class of DSRs. It turns out that for all such theories the structure of space-time commutators is the same. This results lead us to the claim that physical predictions of properly defined DSR theory should be independent of the choice of basis.

Thermalization of magnetically trapped metastable helium

We have observed thermalization by elastic collisions of magnetically trapped metastable helium atoms. Our method directly samples the reconstruction of a thermal energy distribution after the application of an RF knife. The relaxation time of our sample towards equilibrium gives an elastic collision rate constant close to the unitarity limit.
