Relation between unidirectional spin Hall magnetoresistance and spin current-driven magnon generation

We perform electronic measurements of unidirectional spin Hall magnetoresistance (USMR) in a Permalloy/Pt bilayer, in conjunction with magneto-optical Brillouin light spectroscopy of spin current-driven magnon population. We show that the current dependence of USMR closely follows the dipolar magnon density, and that both dependencies exhibit the same scaling over a large temperature range of 80-400 K. These findings demonstrate a close relationship between spin current-driven magnon generation and USMR, and indicate that the latter is likely dominated by the dipolar magnons.

Magnetic droplet solitons generated by pure spin currents

Magnetic droplets are dynamical solitons that can be generated by locally suppressing the dynamical damping in magnetic films with perpendicular anisotropy. To date, droplets have been observed only in nanocontact spin-torque oscillators operated by spin-polarized electrical currents. Here, we experimentally demonstrate that magnetic droplets can be nucleated and sustained by pure spin currents in nanoconstriction-based spin Hall devices. Micromagnetic simulations support our interpretation of the data, and indicate that in addition to the stationary droplets, propagating solitons can be also generated in the studied system, which can be utilized for the information transmission in spintronic applications.

Nanoconstriction spin-Hall oscillator with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy

We experimentally study spin-Hall nano-oscillators based on [Co/Ni] multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy. We show that these devices are capable of single-frequency auto-oscillations at current densities comparable to those in the in-plane magnetized oscillators. The demonstrated oscillators exhibit large magnetization precession amplitudes, and their oscillation frequency is highly tunable by the electric current. These features make them promising for applications in high-speed integrated microwave circuits.

Chemical potential of quasi-equilibrium magnon gas driven by pure spin current

We show experimentally that the spin current generated by the spin Hall effect drives the magnon gas in a ferromagnet into a quasi-equilibrium state that can be described by the Bose-Einstein statistics. The magnon population function is characterized either by an increased effective chemical potential or by a reduced effective temperature, depending on the spin current polarization. In the former case, the chemical potential can closely approach, at large driving currents, the lowest-energy magnon state, indicating the possibility of spin current-driven Bose-Einstein condensation.

Nano-patterned magnonic crystals based on ultrathin YIG films

We demonstrate a microscopic magnonic-crystal waveguide produced by nano-patterning of a 20 nm thick film of Yttrium Iron Garnet. By using the phase-resolved micro-focus Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy, we map the intensity and the phase of spin waves propagating in such a periodic magnetic structure. Based on these maps, we obtain the dispersion and the attenuation characteristics of spin waves providing detailed information about the physics of spin-wave propagation in the magnonic crystal. We show that, in contrast to the simplified physical picture, the maximum attenuation of spin waves is achieved close to the edge of the magnonic band gap, which is associated with non-trivial reflection characteristics of spin waves in non-uniform field potentials.

Magnetization oscillations and waves driven by pure spin currents

Recent advances in the studies of pure spin currents - flows of angular momentum (spin) not accompanied by the electric currents - have opened new horizons for the emerging technologies based on the electron's spin degree of freedom, such as spintronics and magnonics. The main advantage of pure spin current, as compared to the spin-polarized electric current, is the possibility to exert spin transfer torque on the magnetization in thin magnetic films without electrical current flow through the material. In addition to minimizing Joule heating and electromigration effects, this characteristic enables the implementation of spin torque devices based on the low-loss insulating magnetic materials, and offers an unprecedented geometric flexibility. Here we review the recent experimental achievements in investigations of magnetization oscillations excited by pure spin currents in different magnetic nanosystems based on metallic and insulating magnetic materials. We discuss the spectral properties of spin-current nano-oscillators, and relate them to the spatial characteristics of the excited dynamic magnetic modes determined by the spatially-resolved measurements. We also show that these systems support locking of the oscillations to external microwave signals, as well as their mutual synchronization, and can be used as efficient nanoscale sources of propagating spin waves.

Route toward high-speed nano-magnonics

We study experimentally the possibility to utilize pulses of pure spin current, produced via the nonlocal spin injection mechanism, to generate short packets of spin waves propagating in nanoscale magnetic waveguides. The spatially and time-resolved micro-focus Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy measurements demonstrate that the excitation by spin current results in extremely fast transient response, enabling efficient generation of short spin-wave packets with duration down to a few nanoseconds. The proposed method opens a route for the implementation of high-speed magnonic systems for transmission and processing of information on the nanoscale.

Mutual synchronization of nano-oscillators driven by pure spin current

We report the experimental observation of mutual synchronization of magnetic nanooscillators driven by pure spin current generated by nonlocal spin injection. We show that the oscillators efficiently synchronize due to the direct spatial overlap of the dynamical modes excited by spin current, which is facilitated by the large size of the auto-oscillation area inherent to these devices. The synchronization occurs within an interval of the driving current determined by the competition between the dynamic nonlinearity that facilitates synchronization, and the short-wavelength magnetic fluctuations enhanced by the spin current that suppress synchronization. The demonstrated synchronization effects can be utilized to control the spatial and spectral characteristics of the dynamical states induced by spin currents.

Direct observation of dynamic modes excited in a magnetic insulator by pure spin current

Excitation of magnetization dynamics by pure spin currents has been recently recognized as an enabling mechanism for spintronics and magnonics, which allows implementation of spin-torque devices based on low-damping insulating magnetic materials. Here we report the first spatially-resolved study of the dynamic modes excited by pure spin current in nanometer-thick microscopic insulating Yttrium Iron Garnet disks. We show that these modes exhibit nonlinear self-broadening preventing the formation of the self-localized magnetic bullet, which plays a crucial role in the stabilization of the single-mode magnetization oscillations in all-metallic systems. This peculiarity associated with the efficient nonlinear mode coupling in low-damping materials can be among the main factors governing the interaction of pure spin currents with the dynamic magnetization in high-quality magnetic insulators.

Electronic control of the spin-wave damping in a magnetic insulator

It is demonstrated that the decay time of spin-wave modes existing in a magnetic insulator can be reduced or enhanced by injecting an in-plane dc current, $I_\text{dc}$, in an adjacent normal metal with strong spin-orbit interaction. The demonstration rests upon the measurement of the ferromagnetic resonance linewidth as a function of $I_\text{dc}$ in a 5~$μ$m diameter YIG(20nm){\textbar}Pt(7nm) disk using a magnetic resonance force microscope (MRFM). Complete compensation of the damping of the fundamental mode is obtained for a current density of $\sim 3 \cdot 10^{11}\text{A.m}^{-2}$, in agreement with theoretical predictions. At this critical threshold the MRFM detects a small change of static magnetization, a behavior consistent with the onset of an auto-oscillation regime.

The Ginzburg-Landau model of Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons

We introduce a system of phenomenological equations for Bose-Einstein condensates of magnons in the one-dimensional setting. The nonlinearly coupled equations, written for amplitudes of the right-and left-traveling waves, combine basic features of the Gross-Pitaevskii and complex Ginzburg-Landau models. They include localized source terms, to represent the microwave magnon-pumping field. With the source represented by the $δ$-functions, we find analytical solutions for symmetric localized states of the magnon condensates. We also predict the existence of asymmetric states with unequal amplitudes of the two components. Numerical simulations demonstrate that all analytically found solutions are stable. With the $δ$-function terms replaced by broader sources, the simulations reveal a transition from the single-peak stationary symmetric states to multi-peak ones, generated by the modulational instability of extended nonlinear-wave patterns. In the simulations, symmetric initial conditions always converge to symmetric stationary patterns. On the other hand, asymmetric inputs may generate nonstationary asymmetric localized solutions, in the form of traveling or standing waves. Comparison with experimental results demonstrates that the phenomenological equations provide for a reasonably good model for the description of the spatiotemporal dynamics of magnon condensates.

Bose-Einstein condensation of magnons under incoherent pumping

Bose-Einstein condensation in a gas of magnons pumped by an incoherent pumping source is experimentally studied at room temperature. We demonstrate that the condensation can be achieved in a gas of bosons under conditions of incoherent pumping. Moreover, we show the critical transition point is almost independent of the frequency spectrum of the pumping source and is solely determined by the density of magnons. The electromagnetic power radiated by the magnon condensate was found to scale quadratically with the pumping power, which is in accordance with the theory of Bose-Einstein condensation in magnon gases.

Control of interlayer exchange coupling in Fe/Cr/Fe trilayers by ion beam irradiation

The manipulation of the antiferromagnetic interlayer coupling in the epitaxial Fe/Cr/Fe(001) trilayer system by moderate 5 keV He ion beam irradiation has been investigated experimentally. It is shown that even for irradiation with very low fluences (10^14 ions/cm^2) a drastic change in strength of the coupling appears. For thin Cr-spacers (below 0.6 - 0.7 nm) the coupling strength decreases with fluence, becoming ferromagnetic for fluences above (2x10^14 ions/cm^2). The effect is connected with the creation of magnetic bridges in the layered system due to atomic exchange events caused by the bombardment. For thicker Cr spacers (0.8 - 1.2 nm) an enhancement of the antiferromagnetic coupling strength is found. A possible explanation of the enhancement effect is given.
