Evolution of structural, magnetic and transport properties in MnBi2-xSbxTe4

Here we report the evolution of structural, magnetic and transport properties in MnBi$_{2-x}$Sb$_x$Te$_4$ (0$\leq x \leq$2) single crystals. MnSb$_2$Te$_4$, isostructural to MnBi$_2$Te$_4$, has the lattice parameters of \textit{a}=4.2445(3)$Å$ and \textit{c}=40.869(5)$Å$, respectively. With increasing Sb content in MnBi$_{2-x}$Sb$_x$Te$_4$, the \textit{a}-lattice decreases linearly following the Vegards law while the \textit{c}-lattice shows little compositional dependence. The \textit{a}-lattice contraction occurs by reducing Mn-Te-Mn bond angle while Mn-Te bond length remains nearly constant. The anisotropic magnetic properties suggest an antiferromagnetic order below T$_N$=19\,K for MnSb$_2$Te$_4$ with the magnetic moments aligned along the crystallographic \textit{c}-axis. The antiferromagnetic ordering temperature slightly decreases from 24\,K for MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ to 19\,K for MnSb$_2$Te$_4$. More dramatic change was observed for the critical magnetic fields required for the spin-flop transition and moment saturation. With increasing Sb content, both critical fields decrease and in MnSb$_2$Te$_4$ a small field of 3\,kOe is enough to saturate the moment. In high magnetic fields, the saturation moment shows significant suppression from 3.56$μ_B$/Mn for MnBi$_2$Te$_4$ to 1.57$μ_B$/Mn for MnSb$_2$Te$_4$. Data analyses suggest that both the interlayer magnetic interaction and single ion anisotropy decrease with increasing Sb content. The partial substitution of Bi by Sb also dramatically affects the transport properties. A crossover from n-type to p-type conducting behavior is observed around x=0.63. Our results show close correlation between structural, magnetic and transport properties in MnBi$_{2-x}$Sb$_x$Te$_4$ and that partial substitution of Bi by Sb is an effective approach to fine tuning both the magnetism and transport properties of MnBi$_{2-x}$Sb$_x$Te$_4$.

Magnetic order in single crystals of Na3Co2SbO6 with a honeycomb arrangement of 3d$^7$ Co$^{2+}$ ions

We have synthesized single crystals of Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ and characterized the structure and magnetic order by measuring anisotropic magnetic properties, heat capacity, x-ray and neutron single crystal diffraction. Magnetic properties and specific heat of polycrystalline Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ were also measured for comparison. Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ crystallizes in a monoclinic structure (space group $C2/m$) with [Co$_2$SbO$_6$]$^{3-}$ layers separated by Na$^+$ ions. The temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility shows significant anisotropic behavior in the whole temperature range 2\,K-350\,K investigated in this work. An effective moment of about 5.5\,$μ_B$/Co$^{2+}$ from a Curie-Weiss fitting of the magnetic susceptibility is larger than the spin only value and signals significant orbital contribution. Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ single crystal undergoes a transition into a long-range antiferromagnetically ordered state below $T_N$=5\,K. Neutron single crystal diffraction confirmed the zigzag magnetic structure with a propagation vector k\,=\,(0.5, 0.5, 0). The ordered moment is found to be 0.9\,$μ_B$ at 4\,K and align along the crystallographic \textit{b}-axis. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the experimentally observed zigzag order is energetically competing with the Neel order. It is also found that the covalency between Co $d$ and O $p$ is quite strong and competes with the local spin-orbit coupling, suggesting a $J_{eff}$=1/2 ground state may not be realized in this compound.

Metallic glasses for spintronics: anomalous temperature dependence and giant enhancement of inverse spin Hall effect

Spin-charge conversion via inverse spin Hall effect (ISHE) is essential for enabling various applications of spintronics. The spin Hall response usually follows a universal scaling relation with longitudinal electric resistivity and has mild temperature dependence because elementary excitations play only a minor role in resistivity and hence ISHE. Here we report that the ISHE of metallic glasses shows nearly two orders of magnitude enhancements with temperature increase from a threshold of 80-100 K to glass transition points. As electric resistivity changes only marginally in the temperature range, the anomalous temperature dependence is in defiance of the prevailing scaling law. Such a giant temperature enhancement can be well described by a two-level thermal excitation model of glasses and disappears after crystallization, suggesting a new mechanism which involves unique thermal excitations of glasses. This finding may pave new ways to achieve high spin-charge conversion efficiency at room and higher temperatures for spintronic devices and to detect structure and dynamics of glasses using spin currents.

The Hyper Suprime-Cam SSP Survey: Overview and Survey Design

Hyper Suprime-Cam (HSC) is a wide-field imaging camera on the prime focus of the 8.2m Subaru telescope on the summit of Maunakea in Hawaii. A team of scientists from Japan, Taiwan and Princeton University is using HSC to carry out a 300-night multi-band imaging survey of the high-latitude sky. The survey includes three layers: the Wide layer will cover 1400 deg$^2$ in five broad bands ($grizy$), with a $5\,σ$ point-source depth of $r \approx 26$. The Deep layer covers a total of 26~deg$^2$ in four fields, going roughly a magnitude fainter, while the UltraDeep layer goes almost a magnitude fainter still in two pointings of HSC (a total of 3.5 deg$^2$). Here we describe the instrument, the science goals of the survey, and the survey strategy and data processing. This paper serves as an introduction to a special issue of the Publications of the Astronomical Society of Japan, which includes a large number of technical and scientific papers describing results from the early phases of this survey.

Identification of the white dwarf companion to millisecond pulsar J2317+1439

We report identification of the optical counterpart to the companion of the millisecond pulsar J2317+1439. At the timing position of the pulsar, we find an object with $g=22.96\pm0.05$, $r=22.86\pm0.04$ and $i=22.82\pm0.05$. The magnitudes and colors of the object are consistent with it being a white dwarf. By comparing with white dwarf cooling models, we estimate that it has a mass of $0.39^{+0.13}_{-0.10}$ M$_{\odot}$, an effective temperature of $8077^{+550}_{-470}$ K and a cooling age of $10.9\pm0.3$ Gyr. Combining our results with published constraints on the orbital parameters obtained through pulsar timing, we estimate the pulsar mass to be $3.4^{+1.4}_{-1.1}$ M$_{\odot}$. Although the constraint on the pulsar mass is still weak, there is a significant possibility that the pulsar could be more massive than two solar mass.

Magnetic Frustration Driven by Itinerancy in Spinel CoV2O4

Localized spins and itinerant electrons rarely coexist in geometrically-frustrated spinel lattices. We show that the spinel CoV2O4 stands at the crossover from insulating to itinerant behavior and exhibits a complex interplay between localized spins and itinerant electrons. In contrast to the expected paramagnetism, localized spins supported by enhanced exchange couplings are frustrated by the effects of delocalized electrons. This frustration produces a non-collinear spin state and may be responsible for macroscopic spin-glass behavior. Competing phases can be uncovered by external perturbations such as pressure or magnetic field, which enhance the frustration.

Population gradient in Sextans dSph: Comprehensive mapping of a dwarf galaxy by Suprime-Cam

We present the deep and wide $V$ and $I_c$ photometry of the Sextans dwarf spheroidal galaxy (dSph) taken by Suprime-Cam imager on the Subaru Telescope, which extends out to the tidal radius. The colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) reaches two magnitudes below the main sequence (MS) turn-off, showing a steep red giant branch, blue and red horizontal branch (HB), sub-giant branch (SGB), MS, and blue stragglers (BS). We construct the radial profile of each evolutionary phase and demonstrate that blue HB stars are more spatially extended, while red HB stars are more centrally concentrated than the other components. The colour distribution of SGB stars also varies with the galactocentric distance; the inner SGB stars shift bluer than those in the outskirt. The radial differences in the CMD morphology indicate the existence of the age gradient. The relatively younger stars ($\sim10$ Gyr) are more centrally concentrated than the older ones ($\sim13$ Gyr). The spatial contour maps of stars in different age bins also show that the younger population has higher concentration and higher ellipticity than the older one. We also detect the centrally concentrated bright BS stars, the number of which is consistent with the idea that a part of these stars belongs to the remnant of a disrupted star cluster discovered in the previous spectroscopic studies.

Spin-orbit driven magnetic insulating state with ${J}_{\mathrm{eff}}\mathbf{=}1/2$ character in a 4d oxide

The unusual magnetic and electronic ground states of 5d iridates has been shown to be driven by intrinsically enhanced spin-orbit coupling (SOC). The influence of appreciable but reduced SOC in creating the manifested magnetic insulating states in 4d oxides is less clear, with one hurdle being the existence of such compounds. Here we present experimental and theoretical results on Sr$_4$RhO$_6$ that reveal SOC dominated behavior. Neutron measurements show the octahedra are both spatially separated and locally ideal, making the electronic ground state susceptible to alterations by SOC. Magnetic ordering is observed with a similar structure to an analogous ${J}_{\mathrm{eff}}\mathbf{=}1/2$ Mott iridate. We consider the underlying role of SOC in this rhodate with density functional theory and x-ray absorption spectroscopy and find a magnetic insulating ground state with ${J}_{\mathrm{eff}}\mathbf{=}1/2$ character.

Jeff=1/2 Mott spin-orbit insulating state close to the cubic limit in Ca4IrO6

The Jeff=1/2 state is manifested in systems with large cubic crystal field splitting and spin-orbit coupling that are comparable to the on-site Coulomb interaction, U. 5d transition metal oxides host parameters in this regime and strong evidence for this state in Sr2IrO4, and additional iridates, has been presented. All the candidates, however, deviate from the cubic crystal field required to provide an unmixed canonical Jeff=1/2 state, impacting the development of a robust model of this novel insulating and magnetic state. We present results that not only show Ca4IrO6 hosts the state, but furthermore uniquely resides close to the ideal case required for an unmixed Jeff=1/2 state.

Temperature Dependence of Thermopower in Strongly Correlated Multiorbital Systems

Temperature dependence of thermopower in the multiorbital Hubbard model is studied by using the dynamical mean-field theory with the non-crossing approximation impurity solver. It is found that the Coulomb interaction, the Hund coupling, and the crystal filed splitting bring about non-monotonic temperature dependence of the thermopower, including its sign reversal. The implication of our theoretical results to some materials is discussed.

Main Sequence Star Populations in the Virgo Overdensity Region

We present deep CMDs for two Subaru Suprime-Cam fields in the Virgo Stellar Stream(VSS)/Virgo Overdensity(VOD) and compare them to a field centred on the highest concentration of Sagittarius (Sgr) Tidal Stream stars in the leading arm, Branch A of the bifurcation. A prominent population of MS stars is detected in all three fields and can be traced as faint as g~24 mag. Using theoretical isochrone fitting we derive an age of 9.1(+1.0;-1.1)Gyr, a median abundance of [Fe/H]=-0.70 (+0.15; -0.20)dex and d_helio of 30.9+-3.0kpc for the MS of the Sgr Stream Branch A. The dominant main sequence populations in the two VSS/VOD fields (Lsun ~265 deg, Bsun ~13 deg) are located at a mean distance of 23.3+-1.6kpc and have an age ~8.2Gyr and an abundance [Fe/H]=-0.67(+0.16;-0.12)dex similar to the Sgr Stream stars. These parameters are also in good agreement with the age of the main population in the Sagittarius dwarf (8.0+-1.5Gyr). They also agree with the peak in the metallicity distribution of 2-3Gyr old M-giants, [Fe/H] ~ -0.6dex, in the Sgr leading arm north. We then compare the results from the VSS/VOD fields with the Sgr Tidal Stream model by Law & Majewski based on a triaxial Galactic halo that is calibrated with SDSS Sgr A-branch and 2MASS M-giant stars. We find that the most prominent feature in the CMDs, the MS population at 23kpc, is not explained by the model. Instead the model predicts in these directions a low density filamentary structure of Sgr debris stars at ~9kpc and a slightly higher concentration of Sgr stars spread from 42-53kpc. At best there is only marginal evidence for the presence of these populations in our data. Our findings then suggest that while there are probably some Sgr debris stars present, the dominant stellar population in the VOD originates from a different halo structure that has almost identical age and metallicity as some sections of the Sgr tidal stream.

Riding the wake of a merging galaxy cluster

Using WHT OASIS integral field unit observations, we report the discovery of a thin plume of ionised gas extending from the brightest cluster galaxy in Abell 2146 to the sub-cluster X-ray cool core which is offset from the BCG by ~37 kpc. The plume is greater than 15 kpc long and less than 3 kpc wide. This plume is unique in that the cluster it is situated in is currently undergoing a major galaxy cluster merger. The brightest cluster galaxy is unusually located behind the X-ray shock front and in the wake of the ram pressure stripped X-ray cool core and evidence for recent disruption to the BCG is observed. We examine the gas and stellar morphology, the gas kinematics of the BCG and their relation to the X-ray gas. We propose that a causal link between the ionised gas plume and the offset X-ray cool core provides the simplest explanation for the formation of the plume. An interaction or merger between the BCG and another cluster galaxy is probably the cause of the offset.

Non-monotonic temperature dependence of thermopower in strongly correlated electron systems

We examine the temperature dependence of thermopower in the single band Hubbard model using dynamical mean-field theory. The strong Coulomb interaction brings about the coherent-to-incoherent crossover as temperature increases. As a result, the thermopower exhibits non-monotonic temperature dependence and asymptotically approaches values given by the Mott-Heikes formula. In the light of our theoretical result, we discuss the thermopower in some transition metal oxides. The magnetic field dependence of the thermopower is also discussed.

Stellar structures in the outer regions of M33

We present Subaru/Suprime-Cam deep V and I imaging of seven fields in the outer regions of M33. Our aim is to search for stellar structures corresponding to extended HI clouds found in a recent 21-cm survey of the galaxy. Three fields probe a large HI complex to the southeastern (SE) side of the galaxy. An additional three fields cover the northwestern (NW) side of the galaxy along the HI warp. A final target field was chosen further north, at a projected distance of approximately 25 kpc, to study part of the large stellar plume recently discovered around M33. We analyse the stellar population at R > 10 kpc by means of V, I colour magnitude diagrams reaching the red clump. Evolved stellar populations are found in all fields out to 120' (~ 30 kpc), while a diffuse population of young stars (~ 200 Myr) is detected out to a galactocentric radius of 15 kpc. The mean metallicity in the southern fields remains approximately constant at [M/H] = -0.7 beyond the edge of the optical disc, from 40' out to 80'. Along the northern fields probing the outer \hi disc, we also find a metallicity of [M/H] = -0.7 between 35' and 70' from the centre, which decreases to [M/H] = -1.0 at larger angular radii out to 120'. In the northernmost field, outside the disc extent, the stellar population of the large stellar feature possibly related to a M33-M31 interaction is on average more metal-poor ([M/H] = -1.3) and older (> 6 Gyr). An exponential disc with a large scale-length (~ 7 kpc) fits well the average distribution of stars detected in both the SE and NW regions from a galactocentric distance of 11 kpc out to 30 kpc. The stellar distribution at large radii is disturbed and, although there is no clear correlation between the stellar substructures and the location of the HI clouds, this gives evidence for tidal interaction or accretion events.

Accurate Stellar Kinematics at Faint Magnitudes: application to the Bootes~I dwarf spheroidal galaxy

We develop, implement and characterise an enhanced data reduction approach which delivers precise, accurate, radial velocities from moderate resolution spectroscopy with the fibre-fed VLT/FLAMES+GIRAFFE facility. This facility, with appropriate care, delivers radial velocities adequate to resolve the intrinsic velocity dispersions of the very faint dSph dwarf galaxies. Importantly, repeated measurements let us reliably calibrate our individual velocity errors ($0.2 \leq δ_V\leq 5$ km s$^{-1}$) and directly detect stars with variable radial velocities. We show, by application to the Bootes-1 dwarf spheroidal, that the intrinsic velocity dispersion of this system is significantly below 6.5\,km/s reported by previous studies. Our data favor a two-population model of Bootes-1, consisting of a majority `cold' stellar component, with velocity dispersion $2.4^{+0.9}_{-0.5}$\,km/s, and a minority `hot' stellar component, with velocity dispersion $\sim 9$\,km/s, although we can not completely rule out a single component distribution with velocity dispersion $4.6^{0.8}_{-0.6}$\,km/s. We speculate this complex velocity distribution actually reflects the distribution of velocity anisotropy in Bootes-1, which is a measure of its formation processes.

Quantum confinement of Mott electrons in ultrathin LaNiO3/LaAlO3 superlattice

We investigate the electronic reconstruction in (LaNiO$_{3}$)$_n$/(LaAlO$_{3}$)$_3$ (n=3, 5 and 10) superlattices due to the quantum confinement (QC) by d.c. transport and resonant soft x-ray absorption spectroscopy. In proximity to the QC limit, a Mott-type transition from an itinerant electron behavior to a localized state is observed. The system exhibits tendency towards charge-order during the transition. ab initio cluster calculations are in good agreement with the absorption spectra, indicating that the apical ligand hole density is highly suppressed resulting in a strong modification of the electronic structure. At the dimensional crossover cellular dynamical-mean-field calculations support the emergence of a Mott insulator ground state in the heterostructured ultra-thin slab of LaNiO$_{3}$.

Dynamical electronic nematicity from Mott physics

Very large anisotropies in transport quantities have been observed in the presence of very small in-plane structural anisotropy in many strongly correlated electron materials. By studying the two-dimensional Hubbard model with dynamical-mean-field theory for clusters, we show that such large anisotropies can be induced without static stripe order if the interaction is large enough to yield a Mott transition. Anisotropy decreases at large frequency. The maximum effect on conductivity anisotropy occurs in the underdoped regime, as observed in high temperature superconductors.

Interface ferromagnetism and orbital reconstruction in BiFeO3- La0.7Sr0.3MnO3 heterostructures

We report the formation of a novel ferromagnetic state in the antiferromagnet BiFeO3 at the interface with La0.7Sr0.3MnO3. Using x-ray magnetic circular dichroism at Mn and Fe L2,3-edges, we discovered that the development of this ferromagnetic spin structure is strongly associated with the onset of a significant exchange bias. Our results demonstrate that the magnetic state is directly related with an electronic orbital reconstruction at the interface, which is supported by the linearly polarized x-ray absorption measurement at oxygen K-edge.
